in their chosen fields. I n other words, it is to change the perception that STEM careers are narrow and lacking in

creativity and to ensure students aren’t prevented from pursuing a passion or interest because they are ‘weeded out’ by

STEAMSTART K-2You start each engineering adventure by reading a story. Team oriented design challenges offer project based learning that focuses on STEAM careers, geometry, measurement, data collection, data representation, and problem solving. Tinkers talk about math, design, and decisions as they collaborate to design and test scale models.

Individuals create logbooks to document the team’s progress. Sketches, notes, measurements, and other requirements instill an understanding of project based learning and engineering design process. These youngest designers learn the basics of building scale models, developing simple math models, and testing projects to failure. How far can you extend the pier before it requires more posts? DRIVING STEM 3RD TO 6TH GRADEStudents in Grades 3-6 are introduced to math modeling through the excitement of racing. Small radio controlled cars engage kids while building deeper understanding of STEM and teamwork. Major detours in conceptual learning can occur very early in a child’s education during the period in which students should be learning the fundamental nature of numbers. Take David for example:

David pretends to understand numbers in 2nd grade and memorizes procedures for counting, adding and subtracting. In 4th grade, decimals enter the picture and memorizing procedures becomes too complex. All of the ‘tricks’ fail to work and he starts to falter on assessments. Since David never really understood the nature of a number, place value is lost. Long division is catastrophic without place value. By 5th grade, David shuts down to math. Without math, he will not succeed in science.
