Ductile iron PiPes & Fittings
The largest ductile iron manufacturer on
the Indian sub-continent, Electrosteel
Castings Ltd. (ECL) first manufactured
ductile iron in 1994. ECL recognised
the performance benefits provided by
ductile irons inherent strength, impact
resistance and handleability.
Electrosteel is based in Khardah, near
Kolkata, on the east coast of India and
has created modern state-of-the-art
facilities for the manufacture of ductile
iron pipes, fittings and flanged pipe
from 80mm diameter up to 1000mm.
Electrosteels manufacturing facilities
meet all current international standards
including IS:8329, ISO2531, BS EN545
and BS EN598. Over 50% of the pipe
and fittings supplied by the Khardah
plant are destined for international
markets including Europe, the Middle
East, South East Asia and Africa.
Electrosteel in EuropeRecognising the European markets need for a competitive supplier base, Electrosteel has established subsidiary companies in UK, France and Spain. Electrosteel supplies product into many other European markets through these subsidiaries.
In order to service the UK market, Electrosteel UK provides a full service package that includes:
Comprehensive stock holding of pipes,
fittings and flanged pipe
Fast track manufacture of flanged pipe
specials
Technical advice at the design stage
Full after-sales support for the product
As part of Electrosteels strategic European business unit, Electrosteel UK is able to call on the resources and support of its sister companies.
Electrosteels modern facilities produce
high quality products in an efficient,
cost effective and environmentally-
friendly manner. Operating to ISO9001
and ISO14001 standards, Electrosteel
has adopted a strategy of full process
integration. In addition to continuous
investment in the manufacturing
process, emphasis has been placed
on investing in key stages within the
supply chain to provide greater control
of costs and increased price stability for
customers.
Areas where investments have taken
place include:
Coal mines
Coke ovens
Iron ore mines
Power generation

DUCTILE IRON PIPEAN OVERVIEW
Why ductile iron?Ductile iron (spheroidal graphite or nodular cast iron)
has replaced the use of cast iron in the manufacture of
pipes and fittings. Ductile iron has more than double
the tensile strength of cast iron (420Mpa compared to
180Mpa). Simple to joint ductile iron can also be laid
in all weather conditions without the need for selected
backfill. Its strength, high safety factor and ability
to accommodate ground movement make it the ideal
pipeline material for a wide range of applications.
Key features
High strength
High safety factor
Single rated system
Surge resistant
Tolerates ground movement
Proven ease of jointing and installation
Resistant to corrosion and chemical contamination
Extensive size range
Suitable for above and below ground applications
Applications
Raw and potable water pumping and gravity
applications

QUALITY CHECKS AT EVERYSTAGE OF MANUFACTURING
Strict selection of raw materials is an indispensable requirement to produce
quality ductile iron pipes & fittings. Electrosteel endeavours to achieve 'Quality
- right the first time' with strict quality control on raw material selection and
procurement.
Electrosteel commissioned its Mini Blast Furnace (MBF) at its plant at Khardah
using TKES technology. MBF produces liquid metal suited to the manufacture
of ductile iron pipes. The liquid metal is further processed and superheated in
induction furnaces. It is then treated with magnesium for nodularisation and
transferred to the centrifugal spun casting machines.
The pipes are heat treated, zinc coated, hydrostatically tested, cement mortar
lined and finished with a layer of bitumen coating/epoxy.
The in-process inspection and quality control at all points during the
production cycle is strictly maintained and documented as per ISO 9001
quality systems.
