The bibliographical description of a document contains the following:

Title, publication place, editor and date of publication; Exterior parameters – sheet dimensions, distinctive features (presence of watermarks and colouring) and paper defects; Mathematical elements of a map – numerical scale, description of linear scales, presence and interspace of mapping net, longtitude reference point; Justification of output data (when they are absent from the map, which is typical for the most maps of the XVIII-th century);Presence of a legend and its full description; List of a map contents;Presence of texts and indices and their short description;Decoration of a map – pictures, cartouches; Annotation to a map, which may contain the following: history of a map creation, condition of an engraving – first or posterior (when reissued), territorial coverage, if it is not disclosed or does not correspond to a map title, and some other information about a map. Places of storage and codes of all the map copies;Bibliography – sources (studies and articles), where the present map has been mentioned.

Displayed: two hemispheres, continent boundaries, name of the states and individual regions, settlements (2 groups), on the territory of North and South America, Africa there are inscriptions of national settling, Magellan expedition route and main sea ways, connecting Europe with America, India and South-Eastern Asia, the Great Chinese Wall as a relief in a way of perspective drawing. Drawings: above the hemispheres there is the Russian Heraldic Eagle against a background of an ermine gown; in the gown framing there are figures of Mars, Apollo, banners and other military symbolics; allegoric drawings with the motto " with counsel power"; under the hemisphere there is a globe in stall, figures of a geographer with quadrant and of a cosmographer at the telescope, et alia; on the cartographic image there are drawings of ships, a whale and shark. Cartouches: denominations "Description of America" "Description of Asia", "Description of Africa", "Description of Europe", "Markings", allegorical drawings with motto in decorative cartouches.Defect structure and restoration: some fragments of the map are absent in the middle of the sheet close to the western frame. Map of the Russian Empire by I. Kirilov

Map of the Russian Empire by I. Kirilov is the first general map of the country reflecting the whole country’s territory for the first time. It

has been created using the astronomic control points, the latest field data and materials of the first instrumental survey of the

country’s territory. The map was published in 1734 and it reflected all the latest scientific achievements of that time.

With the help of the database one can make up quite a complete picture about the existed in Russia in the XVIII-th century the engraving schools, about the main concentration centers of engravers, about collections of engraved cartographical works of art, made in Russia in the XVIII-th century, etc.

This project will allow to study in which way the territory of Russia was reflected in maps of the XVIII-th century, and how the geography of our country was changing with time. It will also become possible to track changes in administrative division of the Russian Empire which took place in the XVIII-th century in the whole as well as regarding separate provinces.
