The PowerTest 2016 Conference was held in Fort Worth

Texas the week of March 14th. Mitch and I were able to

attend and enjoy time with current advertisers and members

of the the NETA organization. Monday night was filled with

plenty of entertainment, some of which included a Dolly

Parton impersonator, a mechanical bull, a vegas room and a

wonderful band The Freeloaders that played at the

ElectroRent suite. We want to thank Jill Howell, Jayne Tanz

and the rest of the NETA organization for their hospitality and

we look forward to attending a PowerTest Conference in the

future. Photos from the show can be seen on page 40.

To address the industry-wide shortage of new technical talent, National Field Services,through its National Training Center, is launching an aggressive, ambitious training pro-gram that will benefit the entire electrical testing industry.

The Demographic Squeeze

Over 20 years ago, as the first of the baby boomer retirements approached, warningswere sounded that we would face a significant skills gap in the future. We are now seeingthese predictions come to pass, in the electrical testing industry and throughout Americanindustry in general.

The Demand for New Talent

College programs are not producing enough graduates with strong, highly technical skillsets in the electrical power discipline to satisfy the demand for new workers. Some of thepower technology degrees available come closer than others to preparing graduates, buton the whole these programs are still falling short.

The demand for skilled young technicians is so great that companies in our industry mustcompete fiercely to attract them and tend to hire them away from each other. Anotherchallenge: once some new hires break into the electrical power testing field and realizehow broad and demanding it is, they may walk away to do less technical work.

The National Response

National Field Services, through the National Training Center, has decided to make acommitment not only to its future but the future of the industry. This commitment willmore than likely benefit competitors as well as National Field Services.

NFS has developed a training program that will be the most aggressive in the industry. It

has formed a pipeline recruiting team that will provide a continuous flow of young talentinto the workforce.

The National Apprenticeship Program

This new initiative, the National Power Testing Apprenticeship Program, will be conduct-ed in two phases. Once recruits are hired and in-processed, they enter directly into anexhaustive training regimen that spans three weeks. The curriculum consists of bothclassroom and lab work to take their education to the next level by specifically targetingthe electrical power testing field. This program will teach and verify the tasks required tobring them to the knowledge and capabilities of a Level II Power Testing Technician.They will then enter NFS’s permanent workforce as a trainee for one year.

Once trainees are certified as a Level II technician and before they have four years ofexperience, they will be placed in the second phase of the training program. This phase ismore extensive than the first, to continue the preparation for their certification as a SeniorEngineering Technician in the Electrical Power Testing profession.

Uplifting the Industry

Naturally, National Field Services will look to retain the most talented of its trainees. Butdue to the demand for skilled young technicians, it expects many of the people who bene-fit from its training will eventually work for other companies in the testing arena. NFSbelieves, therefore, its rigorous training will have positive repercussions throughout theindustry.

CARR & DUFF ELECTRICALEdward Joseph Duff, 88, of Huntingdon Valley, pApassed away on February 28, 2016. Ed and his wifenancy were married for 66 memorable years. Hebegan his career working at the philadelphia Electriccompany and in 1958, Ed and fellow pEcO linemanHap carr founded carr and Duff Inc. they started withone truck and a few tools and built the business intoone of the premier electrical contractors in the Greaterphiladelphia area. One of his favorite early responsi-bilities was attending equipment auctions to grow andmaintain the companies fleet. carr and & Duff is nowowned and run by robert, Eddie and Jack Duff.

Ed and nancy were blessed with 12 children; Anne,Mary Kay, Edward, patty, robert, Eddie, Jimmy, Jack,Sharon, colleen, noreen, and Kathleen. Ed andnancy set the example of a loving partnership for theirchildren and those children have given Ed and nancy34 Grandchildren and currently 8 Great-Grandchildren.Family meant the world to Ed and he loved spendingtime with each and every family member. One of hisfavorite sayings was “ Friends come and go but familyis forever!”

His deep catholic Faith, that Ed’s parents instilled inhim never waned. He rarely missed catholic massand was honored in 2015 for 75 consecutive years ofattending weekend retreats with the Holy Family Groupof the Men of Malvern retreat House in Malvern pA.What a testament to his faith and his ability to inspireothers to take time from their busy lives to focus ontheir relationship with God.

On a Personal Note... I have known Ed Sr. and hissons robert and Eddie for over 25 years. Mr. Duff wasa favorite friend and customer of the EA. Whenever Isaw him at trade Shows or in philadelphia at hisoffice, he always took time to talk about his businessand his family. Even while on vacation in BradentonFL, we met for breakfast and he always had a twinklein his eye and a great story to tell. He loved to travelwith his family and loved talking of the adventures. Ialways enjoyed hearing those stories.

I have talked to many people at trade Shows (nEcA,IcUEE and the Electrical League of philadelphia) andwhenever his name came up, superlatives followed...“He was great to work with, honest and trustworthy...He loved his employees and their families and caredabout them... He got to know his customers anddeveloped great business relationships with them.”

It was a privilege to know Ed Sr. and I will miss him aswill his many customers, employees and friends.
