Introduction Of Electric Rocket Propulsion
• An electrically powered rocket propulsion system uses electrical energy to change the velocity of a rocket.
• It uses the electrical energy like batteries, electric current and nuclear power for ignition and for thrust required.

Introduction• Due to limited electric
power the thrust is much weaker compared to chemical rockets, but electric propulsion can provide a small thrust for a long time. Russian satellites have used electric propulsion for decade.

Electric Rocket Propulsion
• The idea of electric propulsion for spacecraft dates back to 1906.
• The first in-space demonstration of electric propulsion was an ion engine carried on board the SERT-1 (Space Electric Rocket Test) spacecraft, launched on 20 July 1964

Types of electric propulsion
• Ion/plasma drives• Electrostatic• Electro thermal• Electromagnetic

Ion/plasma drives
• This type of rocket-like reaction engine uses electric energy to obtain thrust from propellant carried with the vehicle.
![Page 9: Electric rocket propulsion](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020709/54bdb9024a795928168b45a6/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Electrostatic
• If the acceleration is caused mainly by the Coulomb force
• It uses electrostatic principle
![Page 10: Electric rocket propulsion](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020709/54bdb9024a795928168b45a6/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Electro Thermal• where
electromagnetic fields are used to generate a plasma to increase the temperature of the bulk propellant.
![Page 11: Electric rocket propulsion](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020709/54bdb9024a795928168b45a6/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Electro Thermal
• The propellant is heated by electrically with the help of heat resistors and electric arcs
• The thermal energy imparted to the propellant gas is then converted into kinetic energy by a nozzle of either solid material or magnetic fields.
![Page 12: Electric rocket propulsion](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020709/54bdb9024a795928168b45a6/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Electromagnetic
• If ions are accelerated either by the Lorentz force or by the effect of an electromagnetic fields where the electric field is not in the direction of the acceleration, the device is considered electromagnetic.
