Everyone involved with ELECTRI is extremely knowledgeable about emerging trends and topics. It’s a powerful forum and I’m pleased that my company can take this step financially to support ELECTRI’s work.

Timothy Speno, E2E Summit

As technology advances, we have to make sure we have the best trained workers in place. ELECTRI’s programs and services provide the education and the technology that are necessary for the power industry.

Gerald W. Schulz, Michels Corporation

ELECTRI International is very engaged with contractors, chapters and partners across the country. Together, we have an important role in ensuring the future success of our industry. We constantly invest in excellence. That’s ELECTRI’s focus and its promise.

Page 3: ELECTRI International's Annual Report 2014

Electrical construction is a complex industry that is constantly growing and changing. We, as electrical contractors, make major decisions every day, from the economics of a project, to the safety measures we must take to protect our workforce, to the best technologies we can employ to accomplish the job professionally and profitably.

Every day, we identify the areas of our operations that require our attention and resources. In a similar fashion, ELECTRI International reviews the EC landscape and defines the topics where additional research and education can help make our EC companies stronger and more valuable to owners and developers.

Our Foundation has a strong tradition of working with contractors, NECA Chapters, industry allies, and the academic community to analyze which aspects of our industry could benefit the most from newly-commissioned research. ELECTRI

cannot solve our problems for us. It can—and does—give us the education and information we need to make sensible, forward-thinking decisions.

I firmly believe that it’s imperative for us to determine what’s right for our industry and take every avenue to make it happen. That is the value of our partnership with ELECTRI International. The Foundation is here to help us define what we need and to get the job done right.

Sincerely,

Dennis F. QuebeChairman, Board of TrusteesELECTRI International

2014 Kitchen Cabinet

Thomas Edison, one of society’s most respected inventors, set the stage for the modern electric world. When asked to describe the effort required to successfully obtain more than 1,000 U.S. patents, Edison replied, “The most certain way to succeed is to try just one more time, every day.”

For more than 25 years, ELECTRI International has built its commitment to electrical construction by deciding every day to take on the initiatives that will help EC contractors operate more successfully and profitably. Our involvement with the EC world is not limited to a calendar agenda. Our staff, researchers, consultants,

and volunteers work together year-round to ensure that we are listening to the advice and recommendations of ECs throughout North America and Central America. Their understanding of the industry is always there, ready for ELECTRI to tap into as we design and deliver our program agenda.

Each time that ELECTRI announces a new program, we collectively wait to see how participants will respond. When we launched the NECA Student Chapter Green Energy Challenge, we anticipated that a few student chapters with strong faculty involvement would enter the competition. We worked every day to promote the competition at schools across the country. Every day, we found ways to show students how valuable participating could be to their future careers in electrical construction. Today, this competition stands as a hallmark of ELECTRI’s “every day” efforts to introduce new talent to industry leaders from companies nationwide.

When we are working with members of the Kitchen Cabinet fund-raising committee, our mutual goal is to engage with potential ELECTRI investors. We try, every day, to encourage new participation in ELECTRI’s programs and on its ELECTRI Council.

While we may never have 1,000 projects on our plate, unlike Edison’s 1,000+ patents, we share his determination to do our very best for the electrical industry— every day.

Russell J. AlessiPresident, ELECTRI International

Page 5: ELECTRI International's Annual Report 2014

In the electrical industry, the entire focus of our work product is connecting. We connect the wires and the systems that bring power and light to our projects. We connect the right managers and workforce to ensure that each customer gets the most professional team producing the best possible results.

For ELECTRI International, connecting is far more than one-time project decisions. ELECTRI is successful because it has made the commitment to connect the best and brightest to work together for our industry’s benefit.

Through ELECTRI’s Talent Initiative, we connect with outstanding students who are interested in joining our industry. The Cross-Border Meetings connect us with contractors from other parts of the world and give us insight into ways that we can cooperate with their firms, learn from their experiences, and offer our US expertise to help them improve their service delivery. Our ELECTRI Council members know the value of connecting. They share ideas, best practices, business opportunities, and friendship. These men and women are the EC link from theory to practice.

Of course, ELECTRI’s major focus is research and that’s where our connections shine. Since 1989, ELECTRI has commissioned important, ground-changing research from investigators at top institutions across the country. These individuals do not work in isolation. They are connected to our industry, starting with their proposal presentation to the ELECTRI Council. As each project progresses, our researchers connect with an assigned Task Force plus many other individuals who provide company data

and expertise to make project findings and recommendations ever more valuable.

In the 1800s, the expansion of our railroad system had a major impact on our country’s prosperity. The image of the rails connecting from coast to coast is a good reminder of what ELECTRI International does for us. Our Foundation connects ideas to actions and we all benefit.

Page 6: ELECTRI International's Annual Report 2014

Choosing the right action is an important part of ELECTRI International’s work. Deciding the potential for a project to deliver the promised results has to be addressed before Foundation funds are committed.

That’s where ELECTRI’s Program Review Committee comes into play. When ELECTRI issues a Request for Proposals, the researchers who respond each have their own idea of how their work will improve the EC industry. The PRC evaluates the proposed work content,

timeframe, cost, and potential outcome. This Committee devotes countless hours to reviewing and discussing project ideas before sending the best possible research candidates to meet with the ELECTRI Council.

The key objective of each ELECTRI International project is to deliver the information and education that our contractors must have in order to meet their customers’ needs and expectations. ELECTRI gives the members of our industry and our partners the opportunity to participate in this delivery process. Whether we serve on a committee, competition jury or task force, our involvement is critical. When we deliver, we are making a difference for electrical construction.

In 2014, ELECTRI’s Education Center continued to award annual Wendt Scholarship grants to NECA Chapters to offer training through NECA Education for their members.

Launched in 2007, the Talent Initiative fosters interest in the electrical construction industry among college students and faculty members in construction management and related fields. The Talent Initiative is producing well-rounded electrical managers prepared to improve the delivery of electrical construction projects and enhance company profits.

In 2014, ELECTRI will award up to 32 grants to NECA Chapters to supplement chapter scholarships and/or travel funds to Convention for member of their Student Chapters. In addition, faculty members who develop and coordinate NECA Student Chapter activities will be awarded an annual stipend.

For its annual Green Energy Challenge Competition, ELECTRI awards prizes to the three finalist student teams to offset travel and presentation costs. Fifteen teams participated in the 2014 Competition.

In February 2014, ELECTRI launched the Student Passport Initiative Competition for NECA Student Chapters who will compete for projects that advance efficient and sustainable energy solutions for rural, developing communities within the USA or internationally. Penn State University is the winner of the first competition.

International Center Programs

ELECTRI International established annual Cross-Border Meetings to offer electrical contractors an opportunity to network and exchange ideas with their counterparts in other countries and to learn about the rewards and challenges of joint ventures.

In March 2014, more than 90 U.S. contractors, engineers, and their guests gathered in Havana, Cuba for the 9th ELECTRI International Cross Border Meeting. Participants from North and South America experienced a rich mix of business and professional meetings and social events during the conference.

ELECTRI International Names Early Career Award in Memory of Thomas E. GlavinichThomas E. Glavinich, D.E., P.E., a faculty member in the Department of Architectural Engineering at the University of Kansas, died in April 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Well-known to the ELECTRI International community, Tom was among the first academic researchers to receive an ELECTRI grant in the early 1990s and his investigative studies continued to be among the most outstanding projects accepted for ELECTRI research over the next 20 years.

Tom was especially enthusiastic about the opportunities ELECTRI offers for young faculty members and outstanding students to engage with the Foundation. He was a strong supporter of ELECTRI’s Early Career Awards and encouraged faculty from universities across the country to bring their most creative ideas to the table for this annual competition.

To honor Tom’s memory, ELECTRI International has established a fund through which friends and colleagues may contribute to support a named Early Career Award. The first contribution received for this initiative has come from the Canadian Electrical Contractors Association. ELECTRI extends its thanks to the members of the CECA Board for their generosity.

Each year, the recipient selected by the ELECTRI Council will be designated as the Thomas Glavinich Fellow.
