Job Search & Skills Training: Developing Customer Service Skills

Customer service skills are very important for many different types of jobs in the Niagara region. There are many jobs that require face to face communication, communicating with customers over the phone or greeting customers at a front desk in various settings (hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, call centres, retail, medical and business ofces).

What is good Customer Service?

Customer service is “the act of taking care of the customer's needs by providing and delivering professional, helpful, high quality service and assistance before, during, and after the customer's requirements are met. Customer service is meeting the needs and desires of any customer” (Google, June 25, 2018)

Newcomers to Canada can learn about customer service at the Niagara Folk Arts Multicultural Centre through our Skills Training Program: Customer Service Basics. This is an introductory

training program with the goal of increasing newcomers’ employability in the sector of customer service. The program covers topics such as listening skills and professionalism, dealing with challenging clients, language use in customer service, techniques to build effective customer service relationships, a eld overview in the Niagara region and much more.

This summer Customer Service Basics will be offered from Monday, July 30 to Friday, August 3, every morning from 9am to 12pm. This program will also serve to prepare participants interested in attending the Customer Service Career Fair our centre will be holding on Wednesday, August 8 from 1pm to 3:30pm.

For more information and registration in any or both events, please contact us at [email protected] or call us at 905-685-6589 Ext. 231 or 234.

On June 20th, the Mentorship Program in partnership with Brock University organized a learning session called a "Conversation with Brock University". The session allowed newcomers to discuss academic opportunities in order to bridge the gap between their international credentials/experience in their home country and furthering their academic pursuits in Canada.

Here are the 5 key points of this session:

1. When applying to Brock University, the international credential assessment WES is not accepted. Brock does their own credential evaluation.

2. If you are a permanent resident or convention refugee, you pay domestic tuition fees which are cheaper than international tuition fees!

3. Every program has different admission requirements. Be sure to follow the requirements of the program you are applying for. You will need your academic transcripts from your home country or previous educational institutions you attended.

4. Prior to applying for a Master's program, it is important to contact a Brock graduate professor to discuss your research interests so they may get to know you better.

5. Manage your expectations. Most graduate level Master's programs are very competitive. If you do not gain admission, do not take it personally. Rather, speak with a Graduate Advisor to see how you can enhance your application in the future.

For more information about the Mentorship Program, contact Yusuf Al-Harazi, Mentorship Coordinator 905-685-6589 ext. 261
