Dear Fellow Rotarians,
Over the past 2-3 days, Robbinah Hakiza, Director & Founder of God's Mercy Orphanage Center in Kisoro, Uganda has written to most of you. If she has not written to you yet, be looking for it, as she is trying to send out 2 or 3 per day.
Robbinah is sending out photos of the child that you are sponsoring at GMOC. She has also included a hand-written letter from the child you are sponsoring. She has also sent you a list of items that she recently purchased for the child you are sponsoring. This is actually the second report that she sent to you. The first report was mailed on February 5, but it got lost in cyber space for most of you. Please let me know if you do not receive these most recent reports from Robbinah.
Robbinah is sending these reports so that you may know that Robbinah is sharing information about you and your generosity to the child. She shares information about that child's progress with you.
Some of you may have thought she is suggesting you send more money to cover the expense of the items listed. No. You do not need to send any additional money. You made an obligation to provide $160 per year for a child in Prima-ry Grades 1-7 or $360 per year when your child is in Secondary Grades 1-4 or 5-6. That money is sent in December, as the school years in Uganda start in January.
Some of you have written to Robbinah and asked if you could send additional money to be used for some spe-cial occasions such as birthday or Christmas or something for their siblings. Yes, you can do that via Western Union, but please indicate to Robbinah what you want the money to be spent for.
Some of us have chosen to send separate funds to Robbinah to be used for the other 14 OVC's (Orphans & Vulnerable Children) at GMOC that do not have Sponsors as yet. Some of us sent money in early December and Robbinah used the money to have a wonderful Christmas celebration for all the children at GMOC plus their siblings and caregivers.
Another request. you have seen the picture of the child you are sponsoring. The children are eager to get a photo of you and perhaps your children and/or grandchildren. They want to learn about you, your family and your background. Please share anything through Robbinah. Her E-mail address is: [email protected]
I hope you are enjoying the rewards of sponsoring a child at GMOC. You are making a huge difference. But, please understand, you have no financial obligations beyond the $160 per year or $360 per year. (depending upon the age of your child)
If you should know others that would like to share the joy of sponsoring a child, please let me know. I will send them information about how it works. Now ----- One more bit of information. And, it has nothing to do with God's Mercy Orphanage Center in Kisoro, Uganda. But, it has to do with a beautiful little girl named Prossy Nabulya. Prossy is 20 years old and a student at the Kyambogo University in Kampala, Uganda. Prossy is in her first year at the University and she is studying to become an Engi-neer. Here is a brief accounting of her story: Prossy's Mother was a school drop-out. She went to work as a maid at a very young age. When she was age 15, she was raped. Prossy is the child born. The man that raped Prossy's Mother fled and was never heard from again. A few years later, Prossy's Mother married a man and they had two children. Then, he abandoned them. Her Mother married again. They have had no additional children, but they are peasant farmers and barely able to feed their family. Prossy was a very good student in Primary 1-7 and she earned a scholarship to get educated in Secondary 1-4 and 5-6. She graduated with honors and a strong desire to go on to a University to study Civil Engineering. But, she had no financial re-sources and Uganda does not have a student loan program yet. She approached Rotarian John Sekaggya and asked for his help. Who is John Sekaggya? He is the person in Masaka, Uganda that I am working with to put together our Rotary Global Grant. He is a retired Banker and a wonder human being. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Masaka. John has been helping Prossy with her Secondary education, as a scholarship only pays the tuition. It does not cover food, clothing, books, housing or fees. When she entered the University, he also bought her a computer. She is now in her first of four years at Kyambogo University in Kampala. It cost $2,500 per year for tuition to the University. Here is the problem. John's pockets are stretched beyond his ability to keep up with Prossy's tuition. I told him that until all of the children at GMOC have a Sponsor, I will not focus time and energy to find a person or persons that have the financial ability to assist him. He understands and accepts that. But I am asking you, do you know of a person or persons or a group or organization that can help provide any portion of the University tuition fees? If you do, please send the information to me and I will put them in contact with John Sekaggya. I ask you to forgive me for this long E-mail, but I wanted to help clarify what we are trying to do. This is a first-time experience for both Robbinah and me. If you have suggestions, please share them with me. In the meantime, I say again, "Thank You" for your generosity and willingness to be a Sponsor a child at GMOC.
Yours in Rotary,
Merle Anderson

Join Us for the 2015 Summer Reading Program at the Scott County Library System. The Scott County Library System is looking for vol-unteers to help this summer! “Every Hero Has a Story” is designed to encourage children to contin-ue reading during vacation so that valuable read-ing skills won’t be lost. We hope to offer a variety of activities for children. Program dates and times are listed online at www.scottcountylibrary.org. If you are interested in helping us, please pick up a volunteer form at the next Rotary meeting and re-turn it to the library. The summer carnival, which several mem-bers helped with last year, will be Monday evening, July 27, 5 to 8 P.M.

LAST MEETING – June 19, 2015 – Joe Stutting; Superintendent; N.S. Schools Joe can’t believe that he has been at North Scott Schools for a year already. He is impressed with the student success at North Scott, so many winning teams in sports, music, drama and history. He is also impressed with the community service the students voluntarily perform, like the Senior Prom held at Grand Haven Retirement Community. Twenty three new staff will be hired for the next school year. Substitute teachers are a very big prob-lem! Every day, some class has no coverage, due to a shortage of subs. The district is spending a lot of money to make all the buildings meet the fire codes. He said the state assessment is a big issue, for the budget! Sixty two attended on Friday, including Rotarians Ralph Heninger of Davenport Rotary, Duncan Cam-eron of Naples, FL and Scott Nauman of Bettendorf Rotary. Other guests were Allison Hupfer, guest of Andy Green and Dee Evans, guest of Bill Tubbs. Volunteer opportunities coming up are: July 11, Moonlight chase water stop, July 8-12, John Deere Classic and August 4-9, Mississippi Valley Fair gate workers. PLEASE consider helping. Ryan Varner was the sergeant and collected $75 in fines. Jeff Helms gave $76 to the education fund for the Presidential citation awarded to Strieter Motors. Only about ten per cent of the dealers qualify for this honor. There will NOT be a regular Friday meeting, in lieu of Glen’s installation on Thursday evening. The auction committee, and anyone interested, is having a noon meeting at Jersey Grille in Davenport.
