FILLMORE SCHOOL – ROTARY READS – IN FULL SWING
Chris;ne Garrow has been working hard to get the reading program going at Fillmore Ele-
mentary School in northwest Davenport. The difficulty has been that every member that
wishes to par;cipate has to complete a “background” check by the Davenport Schools.
This takes 2-3 weeks, aAer the paperwork is completed. Then Chris;ne can get you on
the schedule. She is s;ll taking volunteers and forms are available at the mee;ngs.
Glen Keppy, along with Chris;ne has been reading on a regular (weekly) basis, since late
November. Other members that joined in December were: Jan Trimble, Margo McInnis
and Charlie Jones. Ones that started in January are Paul Seelau, Eric Langan and Becky
Bray. Several more will begin in February, including Jody Johnston-Mohr.
SO support John’s project of “Adopt a School” and help with this worthwhile adventure!
Kim Wilkins will need some help with the spring yard work and tree/flower plan;ng if that
is more to your liking. This project is supported in part by a D6000 Simplified Grant.
“Andy Piro is an Assistant to the Director of Athle;cs at the University
of Iowa. He is 53 years old, an Iowa City na;ve and a 1978 City High
School graduate. He was a four sport le,er winner at City High and was
a quarterback at Drake University in Des Moines in 1978-79. Piro gradu-
ated from the University of Iowa in 1983 with a Journalism degree.
From 1983-85 he was an Assistant Director of UI Recrea;onal Ser-
vices and from 1985-89 was an Assistant Director at the UI Alumni As-
socia;on. In 1989 he started a 20 year career in athle;c development
at the UI Founda;on. Piro helped with annual, capital and endowment fund raising for
the Hawkeyes including the Hawkeye Visions Endowed Scholarshipprogram, the renova-
;on of Kinnick Stadium, and the renova;on/expansion of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Event
responsibili;es over the years included the I-Club Spring Banquets, Hawkeye Huddles and
the Named Scholarship Dinner.
Currently, he helps UI Director of Athle;cs Gary Barta with Special Projects including
fundraising for a recently completed Indoor Prac;ce Facility and the upcoming construc-
;on of a football opera;ons center featuring a strength & condi;oning area, locker
rooms, mee;ng rooms, medical treatment area, coaches offices, equipment room and
video studio.”
Thanks for the opportunity to speak to your group. Go Rotary!

The 4 Way Test
Of the things we THINK SAY or DO
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIEND-
SHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
