What is carbon offsetting?
• This involves calculating a person or entity’s GHG emissions and then purchasing ‘credits’ from emission reduction projects that have removed an equivalent amount from the atmosphere.

• Carbon credit = avoidance/sequestration of one tonne of CO2, in comparison to baseline, or BAU

How does it work? What is a plan vivo?
• Participants draw up plan vivos (management plans)
• Range of activities: Afforestation/reforestation, agroforestry, forest conservation and restoration
• Sale agreements with project coordinator for carbon services
How are carbon services quantified?

• >20,000 hectares under management
• ~$6 million channelled to developing countries
