What is carbon offsetting?
• This involves calculating a person or entity’s GHG emissions and then purchasing ‘credits’ from emission reduction projects that have removed an equivalent amount from the atmosphere.
2
The Carbon Market
• Buyers and sellers trade GHG emissions
• Carbon credit = avoidance/sequestration of one tonne of CO2, in comparison to baseline, or BAU

The Role of Carbon Standards
• Transparency • Quality assurance • Represent different
project types (Plan Vivo – community based, developing countries)
5
The Plan Vivo Standard
• Projects working with rural communities to conserve and restore ecosystems and build sustainable livelihoods
Plan Vivo Standard
History of Plan Vivo
1994 DFID research, Mexico.
Objective: connecting rural farmers to the carbon market
Plan Vivo: Payments for Ecosystem Services
6
Ecosystem services supported by trees: • Climate regulation
(carbon services) • Biodiversity • Watersheds (water
availability, quality) • Soil stability • Landscape beauty
Landowners should be compensated for services which benefit the wider region/world
Not just about carbon…
7
How does it work? What is a plan vivo?
• Participants draw up plan vivos (management plans)
• Range of activities: Afforestation/reforestation, agroforestry, forest conservation and restoration
• Sale agreements with project coordinator for carbon services
How are carbon services quantified?
8
Achievements so far
• Projects under development or operational in 14 countries
• >4500 participants with plan vivos
• >20,000 hectares under management
• ~$6 million channelled to developing countries
• 1,000,000 tCO2 certified to date
9
Plan Vivo in Malawi
• Clinton Development Initiative
• Forestry and agroforestry
• > 1200 farmers in Dowa and Neno districts
