At least from the time I was three. That's when I started listening to Judy Garland. By the time I was six, I had a whole repertory of dramatic songs and torch ballads that I used to sing around the house." The speaker is Sam Harris - the Motown recording artist currently on release with his self -titled debut LP. Sugar Don't Bite, the first single, is experiencing action on North American pop and dance charts and is making impressive gains up the RPM A/C survey. Harris' career success to date is the result in part of his appearances on the American Star Search TVer. While performing in a Santa Monica, California club, Harris was approached by a talent scout for the na- tionally telecast program, and subsequently auditioned for a berth in the male vocalist competition. The show's producers turned him down - thinking his 'show' material and emotional presentation unsuitable - but the program's personnel lobbied on his behalf until the decision was eventually reversed. Harris went on to win the competition for 13 weeks running, and ultimately won the Star Search finals - an accomplishment that won him $100,000. Based on the Star Search performances and concert appearances, recording con- tracts were offered to Harris by six differ- ent record labels. He decided to sign with Motown - the legendary home for artists such as The Supremes and Smokey Robinson, distributed in Canada by Quality Records. The motivation behind this decision is one revelation by the young native of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, as he relaxes at lunch with this writer. The current promotional tour will take him to Montreal, and then back into the U.S. to resume concert dates. "The other companies wanted me to to this, or act like that," Harris explains over a cup of hot water laced with honey. "I didn't want to be a puppet. Motown under- stood what I needed to be. They didn't have any trouble releasing a record with several different styles on it. As far as they were concerned, it wasn't as if the idea hadn't been thought of before, it was simply that they had never encountered someone inclined to do different types of songs." Were his parents understanding of a youngster who liked to sing torch ballads? "My parents were very, very good about my singing," Harris responds, continuing with "they were always encouraging me. It's been difficult for them to understand a lot of what has happened to me since, but I think that they've come around." Quitting school at 15, Harris later com- pleted his degree by correspondence. Mov- ing to Los Angeles in 1979, he enrolled at UCLA. In 1981, he came out on top at the school's Frank Sinatra Pop Vocal Competi- tion, and co -produced a musical entitled Hurry, Hurry Hollywood. On leaving college, Harris met Jerry Blatt, a director and writer for Bette Midler. He cites Blatt as being the greatest in- fluence on his career to date. "Jerry helped me to understand what being myself was all about," Harris explains, continuing with "he made me realize that in the long run, what I wanted to be was what counted. He's had the biggest influ- ence on me, without a doubt." A Patti LaBelle arrangement of the Arlen/Harburg composition Over The Rain- bow - a song popularized by the late Judy Garland - has become something of a signa- ture tune for Harris - indicative of his love for Garland's singing, as well as the music of other female vocalists such as Billie Holli- day and Aretha Franklin. The Sam Harris album was produced by Steve Barri and Tony Peluso, and recorded at various studios in California. The album has gone' gold in the U.S., with Canadian sales exceeding 10,000 units at press time. Hearts On Fire is slated as the second single from the album. - KCW

The Canadian Academy Of Arts & Sciences (CARAS) created a new award this year,

The Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award, which will recognize those who

have contributed significantly to the music industry. The first recipient of this award

was Lymon Potts, who has had a distin-, guished career in the radio/record business,

and who was instrumental in creating a radio market for Canadian talent.

Chaka Khan boosted with Prince penning

Chaka Khan, who played for several years with Rufus before launching her solo career

in the late '70s, has burst into the limelight with her Warner Bros single, I Feel For You, now in the Top 20 of the RPM 100 singles

chart. The single is also the title of her current album.

After many years as a band member and solo artist, Chaka Khan's current chart

gains represents her most successful efforts to date. WEA attributes the sudden rise in

popularity to Prince, who they report as "seeming to have the Midas touch these

days", with his own career and those of Sheila E. The Time, Apollania 6, and now Chaka Khan, whose real name is Yvette. Marie Stevens.

With production by Arif Mardin, Khan gets assistance on I Feel You from the

harmonica work of Stevie Wonder and Grandmaster Melle Mel.

Industry tribute to Shirley Harrison

A packed Leaside Room of Toronto's Inn On The Park (Nov. 26), was the setting for

a music industry tribute to Shirley Harrison. Shirley is celebrating her 25th year with Eaton's (Toronto) where she is Assistant Buyer. The evening revealed many surprises

for Shirley, probably the most important being the gathering of many of the original sales and promo reps, several of whom

started in the business the same time as Shirley. These included Joe Pariselli, Eddie Colero, Charlie Camilleri, Bill Kearns,

quarson, Clyde McGregor, Gord Edwards, Kenny MacGregor, Joe Fox, Stan Klees,

and Art Pappone, to name just a few. There was also a large group of fellow workers and admirers from Eaton's.

Pindoff's Bud Farquarson, who hosted the evening, made a presentation of a trip to the East Indies for Shirley and her hus-

band Fred. The trip was a presentation made on behalf of the record/video and record

services. L.A. & Toronto firms pact publishing deal

A publishing agreement between Modern Art Music of Los Angeles and Mister Chris

Music of Toronto was recently inked. The agreement covers all of the material on Australia's Wickety Wak's first album, New Horizons. The first single from the LP is

due shortly.

Well shut my mouth!!!My remarks about a dailies cub reporter in

last week's RPM were considered rude, crude, vulgar, childish and, uncalled for by

his friends, who, by the way, are rude,

crude, vulgar, childish, and uncalled for.

Where's the translator???I heard Red Rider were upset over theimproper use of their name the othernight (EC: and I hear that Red River wereupset that they didn't win the award!!).

History repeats itself!!Loud talking and rude behaviour duringlast year's Junos were considered scanda-lous and there was a great move to re-organize and change the Junos so it wouldnever happen again. This time the TV audi-ence was spared, as the same obnoxiousbehaviour cast a shadow on the Academy'sattempt to honour one of the pioneers ofthe industry. I would like to suggest thatthe pre -show awards at the Junos be pre-sented at the Variety Club's Salute to the

.. the prophets of doom, the messengers of mediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new generation of competent, creative, confident artisans and by all those of precedinggenerations who have already demonstrated their freshness

of mind, their talent and their capacity for inspired leader-

Numb! Numb! Numb! How would you like to pay $150 to sitfor two hours in a broken stacking chair at

the Junos . . . or anywhere else for thatmatter? It nearly happened to one of thepaying customers, but instead it happenedto one of the creators of the Junos. Mr.Class became Mr. Soreass!

MIDEM not far off!!They tell me that if you book your flight

to Cannes for MIDEM before the end ofthe year, you will be able to fly return forjust over $800. If you wait until the New

Year, expect to pay twice that. In thisbusiness, the airlines will be the winners. Most of the bookings will be last minute. It's called "Flying by the seat of yourpants".

Over "herd' at the Junos!!"Every year it's becoming a better andbetter television variety show." But at whatcost to the industry? "The Academy wouldlike to build to 3000 people over the yearsto come". Bigger is better . . . I guess. "Thewhole thing seems to cater toward thetelevision cameras and ignores the audi-

ence". Mistreats the audience would bea better word. It seems like the audience isa prop that misbehaves and gets moved, insulted and stepped on. What happened tothe original idea of the Junos? The wholething is too long".

Staples produces newradio ID packageCurtis Staples, Producer/Creative Directorat Vancouver's Pinewood Recording Stu-dios, reports completion of a radio station

I.D. package he has been producing at

Pinewood."Before joining Pinewood, I spent about

8 years with the CHUM organization,"Staples explains. "I often wondered whyCanadians didn't seem able to produce ajingle package for stations that came closeto product being generated by companies inDallas. One of my projects has been to tryand change that situation."

Staples continues: "The result is our first

package, Segue, using Vancouver's top

session players and singers. Segue's level ofquality is being praised by those program-mers who have heard it. It seems we mayhave hit a hot spot with them."

A 're -sing' on Segue - the station canspecify the vocal style they desire - is avail-able for about 40% less than a U.S. package, and there is no exchange rate with which

to deal. A custom package, produced fromscratch to meet all the station's criteria, would run about 50% of the U.S. counter-part. Staples is currently in the planningstages of such a production.

in those very important ratings. I was justa little disappointed guys . . . it lacked

professionalism.

Johnston explained that the early

FOREIGNER - RockAgent ProvocateurAtlantic - 78-19991-PThis is Foreigner's first studio LP in overthree years, and the wait appears not tohave been in vain. A pared -down lineupand some simple but hard-hitting songsdemonstrate guitarist/principal writer MickJones' intelligence in keeping the band'ssound current. Great material here: I WantTo Know What Love Is (pre -released as thefirst single), the brooding anger of ToothAnd Nail, and the AC/DC-esque ReactionTo Action. Overall, a strong return to themarket from a band responsible for many ofrock's better moments. Produced by MickJones and Alex Sadkin. Recorded in NewYork City at The Hit Factory and RightTrack Studios. Libretto included.

Kick Axe's Cristongets it in the endKick Axe lead singer George Criston ex-perienced the true meaning of a "pain inthe butt", when on Nov. 23, in front of astanding room only crowd at Tony's East(Toronto), he sat down on the t..and a large glass of water. The glass shal.,...r-ed, ripping a large gash in Criston's thigh. He was able to finish the song and exitedthe stage with blood pouring from the

wound. He was rushed to the hospital where he

underwent plastic surgery. The crowd, obviously waiting for an explanation, waspromised that Kick Axe would return toTony's on Monday night (Nov. 26) for afree show. It should be mentioned thatthe Kick Axe set was being taped for alive broadcast.

Meanwhile, Apple Viper, the openingact, and the remaining members of KickAxe, finished the evening, "Jamming KickAxe tunes and old favorite cover songs,"reports Peter Budge of CBS, "that seemedto keep the fans on the feet and satisfied."

Budge caps his report with "George(Criston) was last seen standing on the tourbus Saturday, on the way to his next gig inthe U.S. By returning for the free show,George proves he can turn the other cheekand the show must go on."

Ilts] CTel 1111JAMES COTTONBrunswicke House - Toronto - Nov. 26/84After 40 years of playing the blues, Cottonhas more than likely seen it all - but theadulation evident here for the man's stylishmix of blues, boogie, and funky rock 'n

roll still managed to elicit a bemused smilefrom his face on more than one occasion.Propelled by a 3 -piece horn section, Cot-ton's band opened both sets, providingsolid backing for his driving harp riffs andpained vocals. The current series of Cana-dian dates supports a recent Alligator re-lease, High Compression, distributed in

Canada by WEA Music. - KCW

IRON MAIDENMaple Leaf Gardens - Toronto - Dec. 2/84Iron Maiden is, without a doubt, a classheavy metal act, a handle that doesn't fittoo comfortably with most acts flying thisbanner, and certainly not the opening act.Capitol's Iron Maiden are currently happen-ing with their Powerslave album, which wasobviously familiar to the packed house,as they sampled the crowd with tracks fromthis as well as their older material, the latterbeing the most popular. The backdrop(staging) was effective, particularly theirlighting system, not to mention the soundsystem - one of the better ear assaultsheard at the Gardens. The strutting ofMaiden's lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson andthe searing guitar work of Dave Murray setthe pace for a heavy metal extravaganza thatleft no doubt that Iron Maiden were stillthe best in the field, actually the first tobring meaning to this music form. Theirenergies weren't contrived - they werereal - and respectful of the audience. Open-ing act, Twisted Sister, was another story alltogether. Kick Axe's Criston gets it in the end

Kick Axe lead singer George Criston ex- perienced the true meaning of a "pain in

the butt", when on Nov. 23, in front of a standing room only crowd at Tony's East

(Toronto), he sat down on the ,.. r'qer and a large glass of water. The glass shat,,r- ed, ripping a large gash in Criston's thigh. He was able to finish the song and exited the stage with blood pouring from the

wound. He was rushed to the hospital where he

underwent plastic surgery. The crowd, obviously waiting for an explanation, was promised that Kick Axe would return to

Tony's on Monday night (Nov. 26) for a free show. It should be mentioned that the Kick Axe set was being taped for a live broadcast.

Meanwhile, Apple Viper, the opening act, and the remaining members of Kick

Axe, finished the evening, "Jamming Kick Axe tunes and old favorite cover songs,"

reports Peter Budge of CBS, "that seemed to keep the fans on the feet and satisfied."

Budge caps his report with "George (Criston) was last seen standing on the tour

bus Saturday, on the way to his next gig in the U.S. By returning for the free show,

George proves he can turn the other cheek and the show must go on."

JAMES COTTON Brunswicke House

- Toronto

- Nov. 26/84

After 40 years of playing the blues, Cotton has more than likely seen it all - but the

adulation evident here for the man's stylish mix of blues, boogie, and funky rock 'n roll still managed to elicit a bemused smile

from his face on more than one occasion. Propelled by a 3 -piece horn section, Cot-

ton's band opened both sets, providing solid backing for his driving harp riffs and

pained vocals. The current series of Cana- dian dates supports a recent Alligator re-

lease, High Compression, distributed in Canada by WEA Music.

IRON MAIDEN Maple Leaf Gardens

- Toronto

- Dec. 2/84

Iron Maiden is, without a doubt, a class heavy metal act, a handle that doesn't fit

too comfortably with most acts flying this banner, and certainly not the opening act.

Capitol's Iron Maiden are currently happen- ing with their Powerslave album, which was

obviously familiar to the packed house, as they sampled the crowd with tracks from

this as well as their older material, the latter being the most popular. The backdrop

(staging) was effective, particularly their lighting system, not to mention the sound system - one of the better ear assaults

heard at the Gardens. The strutting of Maiden's lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson and

the searing guitar work of Dave Murray set the pace for a heavy metal extravaganza that left no doubt that Iron Maiden were still the best in the field, actually the first to

bring meaning to this music form. Their energies weren't contrived

- they were real - and respectful of the audience. Open- ing act, Twisted Sister, was another story all

together. Lead singer Dee Snyder seemed uncomfortable as an opening act and set

out to goad the audience with his grotty patter that fired up a portion of the audi- ence, who were obviously into the band's

music, particularly We're Not Gonna Take It, and other material from their Atlantic

Stay Hungry LP. -Sean La Rose

Christmas with Opry North Bingeman Park in Kitchener will play host

to an Opry North Christmas (Dec. 16), the first time this popular syndicated radio

series has been broadcast from a Kitchener location. Several of Canada's top country

names will be performing at this special including Debbie Bechamp, Carol Johns,

The Stoker Brothers, Johnny Burke, Marie Bottrell, Terry Carisse, Terry Sumsion and

The Carlton Showband. Says Gary O'Brien,

RPM -

December 15, 1984 -

13

Opry North director, "Not only have we lined up some great entertainment for our

last show of 1984, but we'll also be visited by a special guest who will have presents for all the kids. I wonder who that could be, huh?"

Jamie Warren going for three!! Spin recording artist Jamie Warren and

Memphis will be performing at J.R.'s

A challenge from CJXX In response to television images of the hor-

ror of starvation in Ethiopia, CJXX organ- ized and broadcast a 29 -hour radio-thon. The amazing aspect of the broadcast was that it was organized in four days.

The first concern was to locate the broadcast somewhere away from the radio

station, to give the event a high profile and an aura of an event removed from regular

radio fare. This criterion was quickly met by the donation of an empty store in

Grande Prairie's Towne Centre Mall. Next, to lend an air of credibility, Mayor Oscar

Blais was contacted, and he readily agreed to launch the broadcast with a city en-

dorsement speech. Everything else, broad- cast loop, 11 phones, staff from the Volun- teer Services Bureau, just fell into place,

since everyone contacted wanted to do something tangible to help.

The broadcast ran from 1 pm Friday (Nov. 16) until 6 pm, Saturday (17). In

that time CJXX solicited pledges totalling $36,000. The International Red Cross was

chosen as a suitable agency for distribution of funds and their conversion into food

and medicine. CJXX challenges all other Canadian

radio stations to toss their formats aside and gather their communities together to help Ethiopians.

Paul Burke, Program Director,

CJXX Radio, Grande Prairie, Alberta.

ACME rolling in money??? Walt Says, RPM October 20th, 1984 in part, "Country artists are heaving a sigh of

relief knowing that now that ACME is rolling in money they won't have to do any- more of those benefit concerts for the

Academy." It's a shame that such rumours should be spread. The country artists may believe this and thus put their guards down. Some B.C. country promoters felt the need

to bring the annual country music week to Vancouver during the 1986 World's Fair.

The requests to ACME in regards to this event to be staged in Vancouver, produced

documents containing unbelievable demands on the local country music community. A

hefty deposit is to be made to the account of ACME as an advance against the Aca-

demy's share of the net profits. ACME's share of the profits is to be 75% of the net profits, the remaining 25% net profit to be

returned by (not to) the host committee. To ACME? This 25% must serve as a start-up

fund for a future convention in the "host city of origin." If a convention is not held

within five years, the 25% plus interest "will revert to the Academy." It further complicates matters by ad-

vising that the host committee should be composed of non -paid volunteers from the

media, radio, TV, CBC and/or CTV, agen- cies, record companies, artists, and the

list goes on. The entire affair is to be under the auspices of ACME, and ACME holding

the final word on all. When these documents were presented

to the interested promoters, a hearty laugh was heard, and an instant rejection follow- ed. The whole matter was settled in less

than five minutes from the time of presen- tation. The Academy's creed is to foster

and promote Canadian Country Music the world over. A world's fair with an expected
