1 December 2016 www.cascadesportscarclub.org ISSUE 12 EL PRESIDENTE It was an honor to serve as your 2016 CSCC president. It certainly has been a challenging year for our Club. Our first race event we had rain and the next two races event we had very hot temperature which re- duced the number of parcipants more than normal. Add that to our normal loss for first and last driving schools plus the Enduro that prey much put us in red. The good news is we can get back on track but we just need to make some adjustment and make the tough and unpopular decisions. EL PRESIDENTE

It was an honor to serve as your 2016 CSCC president. It certainly has been a challenging year for our Club. Our first race event we had rain and the next two races event we had very hot temperature which re-duced the number of participants more than normal. Add that to our normal loss for first and last driving schools plus the Enduro that pretty much put us in red. The good news is we can get back on track but we just need to make some adjustment and make the tough and unpopular decisions. My only disappointment is the hard work of the BOD and all the volunteers does not reflect of the year we had. I like to thank all the board members for their hard work and support and all the volunteer for their dedication to the Club.

God Bless America. MJ Hajari President Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives. Ronald Reagan

DATE EVENT DECEMBER 2016 3 CSCC BANQUET @ Sheraton Inn

Dear Cascade Members, You no doubt have already seen a ballot and were asked to vote for the “Bud Kinder Memorial Outstanding Membership”. You should have received the ballot in the mail. It was included in the recently sent packet along with the “Board of Directors” ballot. Many of you may wonder, (me included) who is Bud Kinder and why is this award being presented in his honor? I asked several of our more seasoned members and they came up with an excerpt from a 2003 banquet program that gives a bit of a bio on Bud. I have copied it be-low.

Bud Kinder Memorial Trophy for CSCC Outstanding Member Bud joined the club in September of 1956 and was very active from the beginning. He served on the Board of Directors, and as Active Chairman, Membership Chairman, Race Course Committee Chair-man, Auspuff Editor, and Race Chairman. He was also a Rallymaster for many rallies and served as chairman of the Conference rally program. He received the Outstanding CSCC Membership in 1958. Though the Outstanding Membership Trophy was already being given each year, upon Bud’s death in 1970, our membership voted to call the award The Bud Kinder Memorial Trophy in his memory. There you have it. A wee bit of history. Prospective winners (candidates) are chosen by you, the member-ship. A committee consisting of the President, Membership Chairman, and a member selected from the floor is formed at the first General meeting of the year. This committee is responsible for presenting a list of nomi-nees and their contributions to the BOD to be put on the ballot. Nominations are accepted from the floor of the general meetings (or by whatever means you choose). The person nominating a prospective member also includes a brief written statement of the candidate’s contributions. This statement is then attached with the ballot so you have a bit of background regarding why they have been nominated. The following criteria are to be considered when nominating a candidate (taken from the standing rules section of the bylaws): The candidate’s contribution for the current calendar year. Participation in a variety of club activities. Loyalty and dedication to Cascade Sports Car Club. Hopefully this gives all of you a bit of insight into the award and how the recipient is selected. Although it is too late to nominate anyone for 2016, we welcome your participation in selecting the future winners of this award. Sincerely, Steve Powell Membership Chair

This Month’s topic: “Suggestions for Celebrations and Gifts for the Holi-day Season” by your Loose Nut. T’is the season when “festivities” occur. In this installment of Loose Nut, I try to help you out with thoughtful “Loose Nut” celebration topics and gifts. [Hopefully all of you get to read this before the Holidays are over so you do not have to try to remember all these “gems” for the coming year.] During the race season, celebration activities come easy to all of us. We all get to spend time with other automotive gear-head enthusiasts. How-ever the racing season is hibernating now. Therefore, I offer these sugges-tions. Things to Celebrate: Whatever age of your car or the condition your car is in, it still looks better than a Ford Edsel, Yugo Yugo, AMC Gremlin, Pacer (aka lunar module) and Matador, Pontiac Aztec, Rambler Marlin and Cross Country, any Ford Thunderbird 1958 or later, Renault 16, Tatra 603, Reliant Sparrow, Trabant [Does anyone know who made them?] and my personal favorite for ugliest – the Citroen AMI Any car in your rear view mirror is losing (to you). You probably do not need to add alien abduction coverage to your car insurance. Your favorite movie is “Bullitt”, LeMans” and/or “Cars” and your favorite movie character is Steve McQueen, Tow Mater, Lightning McQueen and/or Doc Hudson. Your cars may not be a classics, but they will be some day (unless they were listed in the ugly category above). You may be lost, but you are making good time. And then there are ways you should not celebrate: When you see a drive through window sign on a fast food restaurant, do not drive through their window. Do not celebrate anything with your friends on your cell phone while driving. I have yet to see a car that is a phone booth. However, it is OK to change into your super-hero outfit while in your car, but only when parked. Around this time of year, people spontaneously give gifts to others. I can help here also… A sofa made out of bench seats from a 1963 Impala Z11 427. [Do I need to say more about this???] A car siren – a really loud one. We all know there are times we want and need one! Checkered Flag Underwear. [Beware, this is harder to find than you might think. Trust me, I know these this.] Tools. Any tools – as long as they are made of metal. More tools win. And just in case you were wondering, here are some hints of not-so-good gifts: Big horns for the front grill. They do not look good anywhere, including Texas. Air freshener that smells like bacon. It may smell good at first, but that smells gets old… believe it. A miniature Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, <fill in favorite>. That just increases the “want” factor. No bumper stickers such as “I’m not speeding, I am qualifying” or “Bye”. They do not look good – just say no. A T-shirt that says I am a mekanic, machanick, … I can fix cars… We awl no we canot spel vary wall. We doo knot need two b remineded awl the tyme. A remote control car starter for a friend with a car with a standard transmission and no emergency (hand) brake. I hope this helps. Enjoy the Holiday Season! Thanks for reading. Until next time, Loose Nut. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- P.S. [That stands for Post Script in case you are wondering]. You and your friends need to think about the Cascade Enduro this coming year. The number of entries is too low! If we do not get more entries this coming year it may the last one EVER. This event has occurred for 41 consecutive years. It is believed to be the longest running en-duro west of Mississippi River. Make suggestions to improve it and sign up or it may be gone. For the record: I entered the two hour race opening this year’s Festival of endurance. It was rainy in the morning. Being the eternal optimist, I put on dry tires. [I think I was the only one.] I was wrong, but I had a blast sliding around for two hours. I was not particularly competitive, but so what? It was fun! You all should try it!

October 8, 2016 Dear Friends of Take Action INC, With your continued support, we provided just over $55,000 in purchased food and an estimated $18,000 in donated food during the 2015-2016 school year. At the same time our expenses other than food were only $295.00. As we visited each school this past year, we were pleased to learn that many of them have been active in their community working to find resources to supplement the food they receive from us. We have been able to share the best practices and the success stories we heard with all of our schools. As a result there is a growing level of additional “local” support. This support combined with our efforts allowed the 25 schools we serve to provide food to 1,300 children each weekend! The Oregon Food Bank continues to open food pantries in some of our schools that have the greatest need. The combination of these new pantries and increased local support allows us to start new programs. We were able to begin new programs at five schools last year, and have targeted another five new schools for this year. At the beginning of each school year we wonder if we will have enough funding to do it all once again. Through each of you God continues to provide. We have the support of numerous faithful individual donors, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church provides 100% support for two schools, West Hills Christian School blesses us each year with their food drive and fund raising efforts, and once again this year the Cascade Sports Car Club is providing major support. They put forth a huge effort each year that culminates in a two day fund raising event called the Dash for Kids. In 2015 they provided us with $18,000. In addition, we have received funding from generous Grantors. We are also blessed with support from Pacific Foods and we are grateful for the generous discounts and dona-tions from our Grocery Outlet store partners. We cannot say Thank You enough to all of you. We are also indebted to the army of volunteers who deliver food to the schools and pack backpacks each weekend. Because of your efforts, hundreds of children that would otherwise be faced with hunger, have food to eat. If you have made a recent donation we say Thank You very much. If you have not, we would like to ask that you consider supporting us again this school year. We know that you are asked each year from numerous organizations for support. We are humbled when you decide to join us in feeding children. Our children are our future. We believe that it is not only the right thing to do to help them, but it is a wise investment. You can know that over 99 cents of every dollar you donate will go directly to provide food to the ones who need it the most. As always you can mail a check to the address below or donate via credit card via Pay Pal on our web site. www.takeactioninc.org I hope you will take the time to read some of the comments we received from school counselors and principals about the impact your generosity has in the lives of their students. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email us or give us a call. Thanks again for your prayers and support. Have a wonderful Fall! Hartley Elementary: Thank you so much! ~ School Principal Stephanie Murdock Hayhurst Elementary: The impact is absolutely amazing. For children to have the secur ity that they know they will eat each weekend is absolutely crucial to their well-being. Our school children would have far more insecurity without the help of the weekend food backpacks. All of the families who receive the backpacks appreciate the support that the school provides for their family. If a family is doing well, they are respectful of the program and let us know to pass the food bag on to another family in need. If their situation changes then they have called back and asked to be included again. ~ School Principal Deanne Froehlich & Backpack Program Coordinator Osha Roller James John: A backpack had a note, “Thank you for helping us when we needed it the most, we won’t need a backpack any longer”. It is wonderful to see families get back on their feet. Their backpack was given to another family in need. ~ SUN Counselor Sascha Rosemond Jason Lee K-8: It has been a great resource to help our neediest families ease their worry of food over the weekend. I had a family recently referred to me who have 3 children, 1 in kindergarten. They are so grateful to be part of the backpack program and have told us that it really helps them get through the month. ~ SUN Hunger Relief Coordinator Mariya Klimenko Lane Middle School: At the star t of this school year , a student and his brother who attend our school asked for help with food. They told school staff that the only food they were going to be able to have that month was from school meals, as their mom had to pay some other bills and had no money left for food for the rest of the month. The backpack food pro-gram provided these students with the only food they would have access to on the weekend. We have our mobile food pan-try from the Oregon Food Bank up and running now, and I think it is such a great success in part because of how successful our backpack food program was. I thank you so much for providing such a needed resource for our students over the years. Personally, it has been one of my favorite parts of my job here at Lane Middle School. ~ School Counselor Alyssa Fulks Markham: This is a very valuable resource for Markham families. Many children are getting fed over the weekend that would otherwise be very food insecure. ~ SUN School Coordinator Emily Neve Marysville K-8: A family was homeless for 5 months and the extra food for the two gir ls was extremely appreciated when the “cupboards were bare”. They finally found a home of their own. TAI provides stability to their diets. ~ SUN Site Manager Audrey Rozell Pioneer Special Schools: Our students return to school on Mondays in a better space after having food for the week-end. ~ School Receptionist Jeannie Curtis Sacramento Elementary: Students and parents thank me for br inging this program to our school. We have many families with several children and it can be hard to make ends meet. Take Action INC has been a vital service for these fam-ilies. Additionally, this program allows teachers to help when they learned of students in their class who were struggling with food instability. Now, they can easily make a referral to me, and I can get the student set up in our program. Just last week, an excited first grader picked up her food bag and exclaimed, “We are going to eat so much this weekend!” It brought me joy to see the immediate and vital impact this program has on our families. Another student is currently living in a homeless shelter. While his family receives meals at the shelter, it can still be scary for a child to not know for certain where his or her next meal is coming from. To ease any anxiety, I packed his backpack full of peanut butter crackers, granola bars, applesauce, and other snack foods. He was very excited and relieved to have his own special stash! ~ SUN Site Manager Jenna Sjulin Vestal Elementary: This program helped families at our school who work hard but still need some extra suppor t to meet their family needs. Some are single moms with multiple children and this extra support has helped relieve their stress. We have a family with two students at our school who suddenly found themselves homeless. The younger of the two stu-dents was particularly anxious about their situation. Because of the supply of food from Take Action Inc. we were able to quickly put together food backpacks for the students to help them get through several weekends while their family ‘couch surfed’, waiting to get settled in new housing. Having this food helped provide a sense of security for these students during this time. ~ SUN Site Manager Kim Kenyon

As you are all aware of, our sport has been taking a huge hit in the past 3 years. Our entries are down across the board. Whether it is the economy, or just a changing of the times. If we want this sport to stay alive we need new members to help pick up were others have left off.

So as some of you may know I (Vincent) have been trying to help out this year with our marketing by being a guest on the Test Miles show on KXL 101FM.

Being that it is a car show and they cover everything automotive, I have been checking in on some advertising rates for the club for next season. One of the ideas was to not only sponsor a portion of the show with Cas-cade, but also get business owner that are a part of the club on there as well. So not only helping out the Cas-cade in getting the word out about races, rallies and school but to help the club members out with their busi-ness with some quick name recognition.

Now this is still in the planning stages through the station, and I am waiting to hear back on their proposal. But I would like to get some feedback from members that may be interested in a joint effort to not only get our names out there but to help a local show broaden their show and listener base giving us a better chance to bring in new blood to the sport.

Please, I need your feedback. Let me know if you have heard of the show or listened ever. Let me know your thoughts on advertising the club. Would any business owners that are member be willing to get in on the ads during the show? And also, could you give me your $.02 on why our our participation rate is so low these days. That includes general meetings.

Please Email Vincent at [email protected] and put “CSCC Ads” in the subject line.

Old Business No old business.

New Business Banquet costs: to save money this year, the following was approved by the board— Raffle prizes: last year $1,000 worth of raffle prizes were purchased; the board approved that there will be

five (5) cash awards given this year – total amount $300 Table centerpieces: each centerpiece will be given to one individual at each table Program: cost for program seemed excessive, so MJ said he will obtain bids to see if we could cut costs Trophies: MJ will speak to Tracy Emcee: MJ and Chris Heinrich Dinner cost: it has been $30 per attendee for several years; keep food ordered/cost the same, but increase

attendee cost to $35 Chiefs thank you’s: after discussion, decided that Chief’s will get an embroidered jacket for their hard

work in 2016 (Tracy Klein is working on this item) Committee member thank you’s: after discussion, decided committee members could either opt for an em-
