• Began in 1968 for 1 week under the Presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson
• 1988 under Ronald Reagan it was extended to 1 month
• Honors 5 Central American countries who celebrate their independence in September

initiated the “bracero” (strong-arm) program allowing more than 4.5 million Mexican citizens to enter the U.S.A and work in the agricultural fields.

Hispanic American to win an Oscar for best Actor for his role in Cyrano de Bergerac

• Rita Moreno – first Hispanic to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in West Side Story

• Luis Walter Alvarez – first Hispanic American to recieve the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discoveries about subatomic particles.
1990• Oscar Hijuelos – first
Hispanic American to win the Pulitzer (fiction) for his novel ‘The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love”
1998• Carlos Santana
– the first Hispanic American to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
2009
• Sonia Sotomayor – first Latina to be sworn in to the U.S.A Supreme Court.
