Salento es un pueblo1 rural de Colombia. Es un pue-blo misterioso. Hay muchas personas supersticiosas en ese pueblo. Es común que las personas de Salento sean supersticiosas. Es normal ser supersticioso porque existen muchas leyendas y ocurren muchos eventos raros.

Los eventos raros que ocurren en Salento no son te-rribles. Muchas personas hablan de desapariciones mis-teriosas… Por ejemplo, la desaparición de un par de sandalias, de una decoración o de otro objeto insignifi-cante. Muchas personas también describen la sensación de que una persona misteriosa las está mirando.
Para muchas personas, esos eventos son interesantes. Son misterios por resolver. Muchas personas conectan esos eventos raros a sus supersticiones. Otras los conec-tan a sus leyendas tradicionales. Normalmente, esos eventos causan interés y entusiasmo, pero recientemente en Salento... ¡los eventos causan miedo!
Las personas supersticiosas piensan que todos los eventos raros que ocurren en Salento son evidencia de una leyenda en especial; son evidencia de… La Leyenda del Duende2 de Salento. Los duendes normalmente no son terribles ni crueles. Normalmente, los duendes están fascinados con las trenzas3. Normalmente, les hacen trenzas a los caballos4, pero hay duendes que prefieren hacerles trenzas a las chicas. A esos duendes les fascinan

las chicas que tienen el cabello largo y bonito. Su activi-dad favorita es hacerles trenzas.
El duende de Salento también está fascinado con las chicas que tienen cabello largo y bonito, pero este duende es diferente. Los rumores dicen que el duende
de Salento es terrible y cruel. Dicen que su fascinación con el cabello largo y bonito es en realidad una obse-sión. Dicen que el duende de Salento está obsesionado con hacerles trenzas a las chicas que tienen cabello largo y bonito, y... hacer que sean miserables.
El duende aterroriza a las chicas y, cuando tienen mucho miedo, usa hipnosis para que le permitan que les
haga las trenzas.
Las personas su-persticiosas dicen
que es difícil esca-par del duende
de Salento. Para es-capar del duende de Sa-lento es necesario aterrorizarlo. ¡Y eso es
muy difícil! El duende solo les tiene miedo a dos objetos: una guitarra con cuerdas rotas5 y una jarra rota. El duende de Sa-lento no les tiene miedo a los monstruos ni a las

serpientes venenosas. Solo les tiene miedo a las guitarras con cuerdas rotas y a las jarras rotas, así que es crucial tenerlas en casa para escapar del duende de Salento.
En Salento las personas supersticiosas le tienen miedo al duende. Están convencidos de que el duende causa todos los eventos raros, pero hay otras personas que tienen una opinión diferente. Ellos están convenci-dos de que existen explicaciones lógicas para todos esos eventos raros. La superstición no es válida y los duendes solo existen en la imaginación de las personas.

Capítulo 2 Zaria
– ¡Mariana desapareció en un instante! Ro-
drigo…, tengo miedo –le dijo la mamá de Zaria a su esposo.
– Jimena, escúchame. Mariana es una chica re-belde. Se fue al campo y fue sola. El duende no vive en Salento, vive en el campo.
– ¿Y qué pasa si el duende visita Salento? Tene-mos que proteger a Zaria –comentó la mamá y, después de pensar más en sus miedos, tuvo una idea extrema: ¿Le cortamos el cabello?
Zaria escuchaba a sus padres. «¿¡Cortarme el cabe-llo!? ¡Qué ridículo!», pensó Zaria. Zaria no era una chica supersticiosa y ¡no creía en leyendas ridículas!
Zaria realmente era una chica excepcional. Era una estudiante inteligente y dedicada y una guitarrista talen-tosa. Zaria era una estudiante respetada del Colegio Bo-tero, una prestigiosa escuela de arte. La figura central de

la escuela era el famoso artista colombiano Fernando Bo-tero. El Colegio Botero solo aceptaba estudiantes artísti-cos y creativos. Todos los estudiantes del Colegio Botero eran muy talentosos.
Zaria era una chica racional y lógica. Ella no toleraba supersticiones y no creía en leyendas. Consideraba que la leyenda del duende colombiano era absolutamente ri-dícula. Cuando escuchó la conversación absurda de sus padres, decidió explicarles sobre la desaparición de Ma-riana.
– Mamá, ¡no seas ridícula! Mariana es una chica independiente. Se fue a Cartagena a visitar a su familia.
– Zaria, es un rumor. Mariana fue capturada por el duende –le dijo su madre.
– Me imagino que el duende está haciendo tren-zas con su cabello largo y bonito –le respondió Zaria con un tono sarcástico.
– ¡Zaria! –exclamó su padre irritado–. ¡Háblale a tu mamá con más respeto! Mariana desapare-ció. No es un rumor.

Zaria no lo creía. Mariana era una chica muy inteli-gente e independiente. Era evidente que sus padres esta-ban convencidos de que ella había desaparecido1. Zaria no quería continuar esa conversación absurda.
– Ya me voy a la escuela –les dijo Zaria a sus pa-dres.
– Zaria, no vayas sola. Que tu papá vaya con-tigo.
– ¡Ay, no!… –le respondió Zaria en protesta–. Yo voy sola.
– Jimena, el duende vive en el campo. No está en el pueblo –dijo el papá de Zaria.
– No hay mucha distancia entre2 el pueblo y el campo.
– Jimena, cálmate –dijo el papá de Zaria.
– El duende está obsesionado con las chicas de cabello largo y bonito. El cabello de Zaria es el

más largo y el más bonito del pueblo. ¡Tene-mos que protegerla!
¡Zaria estaba irritada! No creía en leyendas ni en su-persticiones.
– Mamá, no necesito protección –le dijo Zaria con voz firme.
En ese momento, Ricardo, el hermano de Zaria, entró. Le preguntó a Zaria:
– ¿Ya te dijeron?
– ¿Qué? –le respondió Zaria curiosa.
– Van a cortarte el cabello.
