READING COMPREHENSION
THE PERFECT PAIR
Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean, champions of ice skating
The crowd stands and shouts with excitement. Flowers fall like showers of rain onto the ice. The young couple hug and kiss each other as they wait for the judges’ marks. And suddenly, there they are! What an incredible result – nine marks of 6.0! The maximum score. ‘Unbelievably brilliant!’ Writes one journalist. ‘Who can beat them now? They are not just the best, they are the best ever!’
Where did it all start? Once upon a time Jane Torvill was a clerk in an insurance office in Nottingham. Christopher Dean was a trainee policeman. Jane started skating when she was nine. At twelve, she was the British junior pairs champion.
Ice skaters who take their sport seriously must give up their whole lives to their training. They start practising early, some times before six o’clock in the morning, and often do not stop until the early hours of the following morning.
When Jane and Christopher were young, they didn’t do any of the things that ordinary teenagers do. They didn’t go to parties or discos. They didn’t even have friends or hobbies outside the world of skating. ‘You have to practise all the time’, says Jane simply.
The families of the young skaters didn’t have enough money for the expenses of ice dancing competitions. Travel, hotel bills, training costumes and skates all amount to a lot of money. As amateur skaters, Jane and Christopher could not earn the large sponsorship fees from big companies, but they desperately wanted to take part in major championships.
To their surprise, Jane and Christopher received grant of 14.000 pounds from Nottingham City Council. With that money they were able to stop work and give their lives to skating. They began to win medal after medal.
Everyone agrees that Jane and Christopher are two nice people. They are quiet, shy, polite and not at all spoilt by their success. ‘Our aim in life is not to own a house and a car and to bring up children. It is to do something different, to achieve something special’.
The crowd of 4.000 people who stood and cheered at Helsinki, and the millions of people who watched on TV, think that this is what Christopher and Jane have already done.

We sat at our window in the hotel until just after eleven o’clock. Then, from the darkness of Stoke Moran House, a single bright light shone out in front of us.”That’s our signal,” said Holmes, standing up. “It’s coming from the middle window”. As we left the hotel, Holmes explained to the landlord that we were making a late visit to a friend. We might possibly spend the night with him. We crossed the fields to the house and soon reached the open window. We saw none of the animals kept by the doctor. Taking off our shoes, we helped each other to get inside the room. Holmes closed the shutters silently and put the lamp on to the dressing-table.

CLOZE TEST
Fill the gaps of the following text with ONE suitable word.
LONDON’S RIVER
The role of the River Thames has been of vital importance to London’s history. From the city’s beginnings as a Roman Empire trading post and military base, the Thames has connected London with/to the wider world beyond. At the hight of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, the London docks were full of merchant ships; London was the biggest port in the world with hundreds of ships sailing/travelling to and from all five continents.
Today, most/much of that river traffic has disappeared, but the empty docklands are bursting back into life. In place of the old buildings with their smashed windows and broken roofs are homes, offices, riverside walks and the tallest building in Britain, known as Canary Wharf. Miles of new and improved roads have also been built, as well as an ultra-modern airport which is only a five-minute walk away from the nearest railway station.
In the 16th century, the king kept his hunting dogs on the flat marshy area beside the Thames, which is how/why it came to be named/called the Isle of Dogs. Today, the Isle of Dpgs is like a space-age city, with a new railway travelling high above street level past exciting modern architecture.
