SACRAMENTS

Page 3: Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time | Cycle C | March 3rd, 2019 · † Jack Gillis by Rosemary Gillis SJ † Ty Spencer by Mary Chartrand ... Catholic. Letter of interest, resume and references

A significant element of Jesus’ teaching technique was to make people laugh — at themselves and at the pretentiousness of folks who tried to awe them with highfalutin concepts and impossible legalisms. His parables were multilayered riddles de-signed to entice his audience into seeing things differently — over and over again.

When we head down the path that Jesus opens with this little example, we find ourselves in puzzling ambiguity. We get the urge to ask: “If I am blind, how do I know whether or not the per-son guiding me is blind or sighted? If someone really wants to lead me, is she or he likely to admit to blindness?” Pondering this question reminded me of a conversation among vocation directors who were discussing racism in religious com-munities. One said, “Well, I can’t just ask a candidate if he’s a racist, can I?” The group chuckled, and then one said, “Perhaps that is exactly what we should do.” Her explanation was that the racism that mars our society has inevitably marked all of us in some way. If we admit that we have been affected by it, we can be alert to it and strive to overcome it. If we assume that we are unmarked by the racism some call the original sin of the United States, it is likely to control us without our being aware of it. The Gospel for this Sunday calls us to question the opinions we hold and to be cautious about where we look for guidance. The quest for a good guide is far from easy. Bertrand Russell is quot-ed as saying, “Fools and fanatics are always so certain of them-selves, and wiser people so full of doubts.” That is a fine sum-mary of his agnosticism but also a reminder that believers need a good dose of humility whenever they purport to speak of the things of God. Jesus didn’t promise to give anyone perfect knowledge or judgment, only the power to forgive without limits — a faculty that presumes that we all make a good share of mis-takes. Fr Gene

Don’t Give up on Giving up "Well, Lent is almost here," Andy said as we left Mass. "I’ve been thinking about what I should be giving up. I’ve decided not to give up anything." "So, you’re giving up giving up stuff?" I replied. "What’s wrong with the old stand-byes like candy, pop, movies, caviar, Brus-sel sprouts . . ." "It doesn’t work," he interrupted. Andy went on to explain that he’s never actually gone all the way through a Lent without, at some time, doing what he had given up. That puts him in pret-ty crowded company, I assured him. "Then, what’s the point?" he concluded. "If the point is to not eat candy for six weeks, but then I do eat some, I’ve failed. The deal is broken. What’s the point? Anyway, even if I actual-ly did it – went all the way through Lent without a bite of candy, what have I gained? Am I a better person? Am I holier? Does God love me more. Does He owe me a favor? What’s the point whether I succeed or fail?" Poor Andy? I tried to explain that there really is no such thing as failure here. To put it in human terms, God is probably more pleased if we fail and fail and fail, but keep on trying and trying and trying. But Andy’s underlying question is a good one. Why is it spiritu-ally enriching to give something up? There are probably many valid answers. I explained a couple to Andy. Certain kinds of self-denial are good, but in different ways. Not eating poison mushrooms is good, of course, but in a different way than not eating candy, which is different from not eating all vegetables. They all involve self-denial, I suppose, but all are not equally good. Eating the mushrooms would be wrong. Not eating all vegetables would be wrong. Not eating a non-essential, non-poisonous delight like candy is a good thing. What’s good about it? Of course, there’s the material aspect – weight control, tooth cavities, and so forth. But that’s for all year long. Lent is intended to be a time of penance. A season to inflict little emotional pains of deprivation on ourselves from time to time during the day. They needn’t be big or dramatic, but they should serve to call to mind the deprivation that Christ went through – for us – as an antidote to our indulgence in sin. Pick a piece of candy from the bowl at the bank, then put it back along with a little prayer, "Thank you, Jesus." Of course, every spiritual director will tell you it’s better to do something positive – like extra prayers, more bible reading, daily Mass, Stations of the Cross – than it is to just give stuff up. But "doing something" is a form of self denial. We deny our-selves what we would be doing otherwise. So, in a sense, even positive things involve giving something up. "Okay," Andy concluded, "I won’t give up on giving up." About the author: Charles L. Eldredge, a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church from 2001 until his death in Feb-ruary of 2014, was a graduate of The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received his Masters of Theological Studies from the University of Dallas. Charles was active in lay ecclesial ministry and adult faith formation in the parish.
