Egg Osmosis Experiment

Casey Alvero8-16

Purpose

Observe osmosis in a cell

Place eggs in vinegar to remove the shell

Measure weight of the egg using a balance

Measure size of the egg using string and measuring tape

Purpose

Place one egg in corn syrup, and one in water

Weigh and measure the eggs again

HypothesisCorn Syrup

I think the egg will weigh more

The size will stay the same

It will look dark and sticky

HypothesisWater

I think the water egg will weigh the same

The size will get smaller

It will look clear

Materials

Eggs Balance Measuring Tape String Corn Syrup Water 2 Beakers Vinegar

ObservationsVinegar

There is bubbles after a few minutes

More bubbles at top, and eggs are floating

Eggs are still floating, and foam is forming at the top

ObservationsCorn Syrup

It no longer has a shell, and it feels squishy

After sitting in corn syrup for 24 hours, the egg looks shrivelled

After sitting in water for 24 hour, the egg is not floating, and it looks like it got larger

ObservationsWater

After sitting in water for 24 hours, the egg is not floating

It looks like it got larger

Conclusion

Water egg Got larger because water

moved into the egg Egg had a lower

concentration of water than water

Water moved from high concentration(water) to lower concentration(egg)

Conclusion

Corn Syrup Got smaller because water

moved out of the egg Egg had a higher

concentration of water Water moved from higher

concentration to (egg) to lower concentration(corn syrup)
