Historical Background• Angkor means 'Capital City' or 'Holy City‘, Wat means ‘temple’.• Ruins of this holy city are the remnants of the Angkorian capitals.• Represent the pinnacle of the ancient Khmer architecture, art and civilization.• Built by the Khmer Empire which was one of the greatest powers in South-East Asia. • Built between 800AD to 1300AD. • 'Khmer‘ - dominant ethnic group in modern and ancient Cambodia. • Over 27 kings ruled this large territory, about 400 Square kilometers (250 square

miles) in north western Cambodia.• Estimated population contained more than one million people. • Abandoned around the 15th century. • The temples are not only impressive because of the beauty. It is also amazing to

marvel at the vast waterworks and military defenses that were put in place. They were quite advanced for their time.

Facts about Angkor Wat

1. ANGKOR WAT IS THE REASON WHY TOURISTS VISIT CAMBODIA.about 50% of international tourists visit Cambodia to make a trip to Angkor Wat.

2. ANGKOR WAT WAS FIRST A HINDU TEMPLE.as you tour the temple, you will see many art carvings resembling the hindu gods.

3. ANGKOR WAT IS SURROUNDED BY A GIANT MOAT. the moat gives its people a river-like venue to play in the waters, and picnic along the shores. Of course, the moat is huge to prevent people from swimming in from outside.

4. ANGKOR WAT WAS BUILT WITHOUT MACHINES. (OBVIOUSLY)And here’s what it took: 300,000 labourers, 6000 elephants, 5 million tons of sandstone and 37 years.

5. ANGKOR WAT IS FEATURED IN THE CAMBODIA FLAGAnd they are the only two countries in the world that feature their national monument. The other country is Afghanistan. Angkor Wat is also featured in Cambodia Riel banknotes.
