HISTORICAL BACKGROUND• In 1583, the original church burnt down and was refitted in 1593.
• In 1680, the expansion of the church, massive additions to the ground and first floor was done as well as the rebuilt of the building from wooden to bricks.
• The church was damaged by massive fire in the year of 1737, then restored by Ivan Michurin
• In 1812, this church survived the Fire of Moscow. The interior were repaired and rubble around the church were cleared.
• Preservationist societies headed by Andrey Pavlinov & Sergey Solovyov maintained and monitored the state of the church
• The church received the first warm air heating system and the roofing tiles on the dome were replaced in the year of 1914
• During the World War I period, the church was headed by Ioann Vostorgov and was executed in 1919. The church became a museum in 1923. Joseph Stalin (Communist) wanted to demolish the church as it was an obstacle for his urban plans.
•After the World War II, renovators restored ground floor and pillars supporting the first floor. The last restoration was completed in September 2008.
STRUCTURE & LAYOUT
Structure
• The foundation was built out of white stones
• The churches itself was built using red bricks
• There is an internal wooden frame behind the bricks of the church that are as tall as the building itself
• Wooden frame made out of elaborately tied thin studs
Layout
• There are 8 side churches around the main one
• Four large church are placed in a compass point from the main church are octagonal
• Four diagonally placed small church are cuboid
• The large churches stands on massive foundation, small churches are on raised platforms
