PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR KINDERGARTEN

Transitioning to kindergarten can be a very stressful time for a young child. They are leaving either the home environment or the familiar environment of their pre-K classroom to enter a new place. Your child will be expected to learn a new set of rules, adjust to a new peer group, interact with a new teacher, perhaps ride a bus for the first time, eat in a cafeteria, and the list goes on! When parents and teachers work together, the process of transitioning to kindergarten is smoother and your child will experience less stress.

Take your Child to Visit the School:

Walk or drive the route to the school Walk down the school halls Locate where the bathrooms are in the school Look around in the classroom Look and play on the playground Take a picture of the school Talk about what you saw

Introduce Your Child To People at School:

Introduce your child to the teacher and principal Explain who other people are: bus drivers, secretaries, and assistant

Talk About What your Child Will Do In School

Find out what your child expects Describe activities your child will do in school Explain some rules your child will have to follow in school and why

they’re necessary

Help Your Child Feel He or She Will Like School and Learning

Find out why your child thinks school is important Share some of your experiences you had in school Show your child how skills learned in school may be used later in life Start a scrapbook to record important events and progress Get your child on a school schedule before school starts

Take Time to Help Your Child Learn

Read to your child on a regular basis Sit and help your child with their homework Ask your child what they learned in school today Be supportive of your child’s thoughts and ideas Visit and participate in your child’s school events Encourage your child that they can succeed in everything they do!
