20 October 2015
Dear Parents, Children and Friends,
Visit from the St Joseph Sisters
Kalgoorlie Pilgrimage
Last Thursday we had a visit from the St
Joseph Sisters Kalgoorlie Pilgrimage, which
included a number of Sisters that had
taught at St Joseph’s at the old school site.
The group enjoyed a tour of the school,
spent lunch with us and were delighted by
choral speech performances from Year 1,
2 & 3. The group shared some beautiful
stories about their time at St Joseph’s,
were very impressed by the facilities we
maintain and commented very positively
on the behaviour of the children and the
welcoming atmosphere evident at the
school.
I congratulate our Year Six leaders,
Daniel, Daniel, Olivia, Mary and Alejandra,
who served lunch and spent time
conversing with the group. Your
leadership was outstanding.
Congratulations!
This week we congratulate Troy & Aaron
Marwick, Isabelle Appiotti and Allira Swann
on serving as an Altar Server for the first
time at mass recently. We thank them and
acknowledge their commitment and
sacrifice in being involved in this very
important job in the parish. We also thank
Father Mark for the time he has taken to
prepare the children.
We also congratulate Tobie Fielding for his
efforts in the recent Goldfield’s Under 11
Boys Country Week Soccer Team. Tobie
and his team progressed undefeated
through the championship and were
crowned as 2015 champions.
Congratulations Tobie!

LEARNING INTENTIONS
Learning intentions are student friendly statements
about learning, based on a specific curriculum focus.
They assist teachers in thinking deeply about learning
and how to transfer this thinking into language which
can be communicated to students. Learning intentions
must provide clear, specific and attainable goals in order
for students to understand and value them.
They eliminate the notion of secret business. The
teacher is not the holder of all the curriculum
knowledge with students left guessing what they are
learning or the purpose for learning. Learning intentions
enable both teacher and students to be clear about what
learning will occur from the beginning. This process of
communication begins in Kindy and carries on through
all year levels.
Learning intentions focus on knowledge, skills or
understanding. At St Joseph’s, every classroom has a
poster that states “We are learning to…” and the
learning intention for each lesson. This is just another
simple way we opening up the learning process for our
students.

SAYING SORRY
As our Year 3 students begin their Reconciliation
journey, I thought it fitting that we look at what this
means.
RECONCILIATION refers to our relationship with
God, forgiveness, rebuilding our relationship with God
and developing inner peace and healing.
The well-known parable of the Prodigal Son is perhaps
the most strikingly powerful illustration of the human
process of reconciliation:
Luke 15:11-32
“Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons.
The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my
share of the estate.’ So he divided his property
between them.
Not long after that, the younger son got together all he
had, set off for a distant country and there squandered
his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything,
there was a severe famine in that whole country, and
he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself
out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his
fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with
the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him
anything.
When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my
father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I
am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my
father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against
heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be
called your son; make me like one of your hired
servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.
But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him
and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his
son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against
heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be
called your son.’
But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best
robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and
sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it.
Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine
was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So
they began to celebrate.
Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he
came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he
called one of the servants and asked him what was going
on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your
father has killed the fattened calf because he has him
back safe and sound.’
The older brother became angry and refused to go in.
So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he
answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been
slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet
you never gave me even a young goat so I could
celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours
who has squandered your property with prostitutes
comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’
My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and
everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and
be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is
alive again; he was lost and is found.’’
Reflection
We are all prodigal sons and daughters. Our willingness
to confess our sins and to start life anew in a very
special relationship with God should be evident in our
daily lives. The Lord invites us as a loving Father to
confess, to amend our lives, and to walk always in his
paths. If we choose to do this, the Lord will always walk
with us.

All Saints’ Day
November 1
Dear holy saints of God,
we join our prayers of praise
to yours this day.
With you, we sing of God’s
goodness, rejoice in God’s mercy
and celebrate God’s
incredible love.
Teach us to live as you lived-
always thinking of others,
always recognising our weaknesses,
always closely following Jesus.
Blessed are you, happy are you,
all you holy saints of God.
Pray for us that we, too,
may someday be among
God’s Holy Ones
Amen.
Every day in the Church year has a saint day, but
the Solemnity of All Saints is when the Church honours
all saints, known and unknown. While we have
information about many saints, and we honour them on
specific days, there are many unknown or unsung
saints, who may have been forgotten, or have never
been honoured specifically. On All Saints Day, we
celebrate these holy men and women, and ask for their
prayers and intercessions. Please be sure to set aside
some time on November 1st (next weekend) to
honour these saints, who have all made extraordinary
contributions to the Catholic Church and mankind.

Pre-Primary Teacher
A very big welcome back to term 4 and a hot one at
that!!
In Preprimary and Year 1, we spent the first PE
sessions recapping on the fundamental movement skill
of dodging by playing various tag and evasion games.
We also practised different ways of throwing the ball
and how to catch correctly. The class then put all these
skills together by playing a modified game of dodgeball!
We had heaps of fun!
In Year 2 we have been practising overarm and under
arm throwing in various cricket games. We will be
progressing this to using the correct bowling action for
cricket. During the sessions we practised aiming at the
wicket as well as running with the bat for runs.
In Years 3 and 4 we are completing our learning of
Touch Rugby. We practised the fundamental skills of
passing the ball side-on, stopping and placing the ball
down and retrieving the ball. In threes, we played piggy
in the middle whilst running in lines of three - if the
person in the middle caught the ball, the player would
quickly swap places. We also used the tag tail belts to
practice our dodging and evasion skills.
In Years 5 and 6 we have been working in groups and
rotating around a cricket circuit. Each station has a skill
or aspect of cricket that the students can develop such
as wicket strike (bowling practice), base and run
(batting and running practice) and sticky wicket (good
general practice for all skills).

Year 6 News The Year Six students have made a great start to their last term at St Joseph’s. Students have
commenced their persuasive writing pieces, with each student writing about a topic that is of
particular interest to them. Some of these topics are: sharks should not be killed, all students
should learn Art at school, horses are the best pet and students of different genders should be in
different classrooms. As a class, we have co-constructed a persuasive writing piece and discussed
emotive language, rhetorical questions, counterarguments and rebuttals. Students are in the drafting
stage of their own piece of writing and I am proud of what they have achieved so far.
To begin the term, each student set a SMART Goal for Mathematics and English, as well as a social
and behaviour SMART Goal. To begin each term, the Year Sixes revisit their goals from the
previous term, reflect on them and set goals for the new term. SMART Goals have to be Specific,
Measureable, Achievable and Time bound. The Year Sixes put a lot of thought into the creation of
their SMART Goals and I am sure that each student can achieve them if they strive to be the best
they can be!
