A Message From Our President

Lansing Chapter Members,

The Lansing Chapter IIA Student Chapter has officially started! They have been

approved by Michigan State University as a student organization and can now start

holding meetings. The following students went through an interview process with a

group of board members, and were voted in to take leadership roles for the Student

Judy Timmermann is a Sen-ior Internal Auditor at Auto-Owners Insurance Company where she has been working since 2008. Prior to that, she worked at McCartney & Com-pany, PC, as an auditor of non-

profits and telephone companies. She is a li-censed CPA and a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter and has earned the Associate in Insurance Accounting and Finance designation. She has been a member of the Institute of In-ternal Auditors Lansing Chapter since 2010 and has been on the Board of Governors since 2013. Judy has a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics from the University of Michigan.

The Lansing Chapter of the IIA is excited to host a two hour CAE Panel Discussion with four local CAEs. The format for this event will be a brief 10 – 15 minute presentation by each of the speakers giving an overview of their role, what their audit shop looks like, and the path they took to get where they current-ly are in their career. The second half of the meeting will comprise of Q&A’s from questions you submit with your registration. The four speakers are:

Stacey Schnabel, Vice President & Head of Internal Audit, Jackson National Life Insurance Company.

Michael Sekoni, Vice President & General Auditor, Corporate Audit and Advisory Services, Accident Fund.

James B. Hunsanger, Vice President, Internal Audit and Compliance, Michigan State University Fed-eral Credit Union.

Doug Ringler, Audit General , State of Michigan.

The panel discussion is scheduled for March 17, 2016 at the Jackson National Life Insurance Company Headquarters building located at 1 Corporate Way, Lansing, MI 48951. NOTE: This will be held in the brand new, state of the art conference center. The cost is $20.00 for members, $30.00 for non-members and $10.00 for students; 2 CPEs are grant-ed. NEW Student Chapter

The Lansing Chapter of the IIA is proud to announce the new Student IIA Chapter. Junior board member and 2015-2016 Chapter Year scholarship winner, Abigail Andrews, working with the chapter leadership, has creat-ed the Student Chapter of the Lansing IIA. The student chapter is made up of Michigan State University students and is the first student chapter for the Lansing chapter of the IIA. The student chapter consists of a President, Co Vice Presidents, a Secretary and a Treasurer. The Co Vice Presidents have varying focus. One will be focusing on the domestic student body while the other focuses on the international student body. Some objectives of the student chapter are to raise awareness among university students about the internal audit profession, establish a network of students in-terested in the profession and to help guide the students in their career choices. The student chapter will be holding an informational session on campus at the end of this month. Chapter Achievement Program (CAP)

CAP Progress Report

Do any of your internal audit activities earn Chapter Achievement

Program (CAP) points for your Lansing Chapter of the IIA? What is

CAP, why is it important and what can you do to help?

The Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) is designed by the Institute

of Internal Auditors to guide chapters for developing quality programs

and completing administrative duties to ensure it is meeting its

obligations to its membership. Points are awarded for each activity

based upon the activity in accordance with IIA guidelines. The goal is

to provide valuable professional activities and development

opportunities to the membership and earn CAP points while doing it!

Certain activities that are conducted by membership may qualify. If

any of your activities qualify or you would like to know whether they

qualify, please contact Ryan O’Rourke at [email protected].

There are four performance levels that can be achieved.

BRONZE - 685 CAP Points

SILVER - 1,060 CAP Points

GOLD - 1,560 CAP Points

PLATINUM - This is a special level created to recognize

chapters that attain GOLD status for 10 of 11 consecutive years.

QUALIFYING ACTIVITIES

Articles submitted or published in

Internal Auditor magazine

Speaking engagements at chapter

or other IIA meetings

Participation in establishment of a

student chapter of the IIA

Sponsorship of student attendance

at chapter meetings

Participation in a Junior Achieve-

The Lansing Chapter hopes to continue to hold the designation of PLATINUM. Chapter Achievement

Points (CAP) reported in January 2016 is . The goal for CAP points to maintain the current designation is a

minimum of 1560 each calendar year. Retaining our status is of great importance, however, it is more im-

portant that we offer the membership valuable services and we as members do our obligatory role within

our organizations and communities by reaching out, educating and proving our value. Be sure to notify

Ryan O’Rourke at [email protected] if you have any CAP points to report.

Points are reported to the IIA on the 10th of each month covering three areas:

Service to Members (primarily involves attendance at monthly meetings, conferences and seminars);

Service to the Program (involves areas including Advocacy for the IIA and involvement with Academic

areas such as student groups); and

Chapter Administration (involves administrative reporting requirements from the IIA).
