I don’t know about you, but I sure am glad I can enjoy
curling this winter since all other outdoor activity is a
bust (I do not include shoveling as an activity – mostly a
chore!). Anyhow, the competition season is now upon us
starting with the Calcutta this month and Shamrock in
March. Join in the fun or come and watch the action!
Vice President’s Bonspiel
The Vice President’s Bonspiel was held on January
3rd, 2019 and the 36 participants were eager to
start the New Year on our freshly resurfaced ice
sheets. Curlers of all ages from our day and
evening leagues participated in the 2 game x 4 end
draw format.
After the brooms had been stacked and celebratory
drinks poured, two teams tied for top honours.
Congratulations to skip Rick Hughes, with Claude
Tellier, Tom McPherson & Maureen Custy; and
to skip Mark Romer, with Paul Suchecki &
Cathy McKeown and to all who turned out to
compete and enjoy the evening. For more team
photos, check out our BLOG post on the MWCC
website.

Husband to wife – “Today is a fine day."
Next day he says: “Today is a fine day.”
Again, next day, he says same thing – “Today is a fine
day."
Finally, after a week, the wife can’t take it and asks her
husband –
“Since last week, you have been saying 'Today is a fine
day.” “I am fed up. What’s the matter?”
Husband: Last week when we had an argument, you said,
“I will leave you one fine day.”
I was just trying to remind you ......”

Junior Curling Here's a report from Jim Cochrane:
January, once again, turned out to be a busy month for our
Juniors. There were Interclub games for both the Little Rocks
and Big Rocks Interclub games. The Little Rocks played against
TMR at Glenmore. MWCC was represented by Clovis Leclerc,
Evan Meldrum, Simon Leclerc and Trevor Meldrum they
played well and displayed great sportsmanship against a clearly
younger and less experienced opponent. The Big Rocks played at
Pointe-Claire. Montreal West sent Leah Corbin-O’Kill, Nathan
Shepherd, Jeremy Shepherd and last-minute replacement
Clovis Leclerc. They played a stellar game and one of teams
won! Interclub is a great season-long event that allows for junior
curlers to play against others their age around Montreal and get a
feel for different ice at different clubs. Good luck to the teams in
February!
The marquee event of January is the annual Junior Invitational
Leprechaun Bonspiel. An event organized in partnership with
Kevin Alladin and Jim Ritchie, who put on a well-run
tournament with all the tradition, pomp and structure of a sanctioned event. There were 10 teams (2
from our Juniors) in the Recreational Division and 6 teams (including 1 of our former Juniors) in the
Competitive Division dressing up to the theme of Countries of Curling. Teams from North Grenville,
ON (Brazil) and TMR (Greece) won these competitions, respectively. Here are some of Kevin’s post-
bonspiel musings:
I would like to thank you all for your kind words regarding this year’s
Leprechaun. It was really heartfelt and humbling, the pleasure is all
mine. In fact, I should be thanking you all – Lester, Andrea, André, Jim,
all of the junior parents (including but definitely not exclusively: Tanya,
Mohan, Yoko, Denis, Sedika, Phenice, Patty, Tracey, and Charlene),
Anne, Mark W., Kari, Karl, Mirko and the entire board for the support
you have shown both me and the event. We also couldn’t have done it
without Jim Ritchie and his hard work. Thank you to the junior parents,
coaches and kids for showing the best that is Montreal West Curling
Club, and the warmth that our club has to offer.
The Leprechaun has been going on every year since 2003 – 16
consecutive years. There are not many spiels out there at any level that have that kind of longevity.
This is completely due to you all. Jim Ritchie and I have already started to plan next year’s event
– reviewing some new ideas, changes, modifications, etc. We hope you will want us to run this
again!
Lastly, we look forward to our annual fundraiser the Wankers Funspiel run by former Junior
coordinator Janet Walpole. The event is already fully booked and we look forward to an evening of fun
and sportsmanship.

Even though there was a blizzard raging outside, I made it the half-mile to the bakery, where I
asked the owner for six rolls.
“Your wife must like rolls,” he said.
“How do you know these are for my wife?” I asked.
“Because your mother wouldn’t send you out in weather like this.”
Please take a moment
to check out Canfir’s
Facebook Page for the
latest buzz about our
league and the curling
world. While you’re
there, don’t forget to
