Highlights of the October Meeting

L to R: Beverly Fletchall, Co-President; Tiatasha Brown, Principal Shields Middle School; Tim & Jessica Smith w/daughter Kimmy (Tech Trek camper); Antonio Lopez & Maria Gomez w/daughter Beatriz Lopez-Gomez (camper); Diane Waronka, Co-President; Rina LaRosa, AVID teacher at Shields Middle School; Kathy Vore, member of Tech Trek staff in 2016 & 2017.

We listened proudly as our two 2017 Tech Trek campers told us about the highlights of their week at camp and some of the ideas and inspirations they brought home. We hope this experience has a positive influence on their futures. Tiatasha Brown, school principal, and Rina LaRosa, the teacher who facilitates our activities at their school, spoke of our good influence on the girls of their student body and their appreciation of our efforts.

Kathy Vore, a member of our branch’s STEM committee, has been active for several years with Florida AAUW who directs this program in our state. She has been at the camp with the girls the last two years. Kathy took pictures at camp and had prepared a slide show of them for us to enjoy during lunch. Perhaps her greatest contribution to the program were the slides with “talking points” to which the girls could refer when telling us about their experiences. THANK YOU Kathy, from all your fellow members of SCC AAUW !

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

BIG THANK YOU TO KATHY VORE for putting so much planning and time into the pres-entation by our two Tech Trek students at the October meeting. It kept them from being too nervous regarding public speaking and it helped them be specific when presenting their thoughts regarding their week at camp. It was a very successful program. I also appreciate all the people who bought raffle tickets for the basket made by Paula. If we can make $37 for every basket we sell by the end of the year, it will really make a difference in fundraising totals. As you know already National is no longer contributing towards Tech Trek camps so ……… Nov. 2 is Hi Neighbor and we always have a table at that event. If you know anyone fairly new to the area encourage them to come to Community Hall between 6:30 & 8:30 pm. This will be our fourth women’s Trivia event in the Florida room on November11. It is always so popular that we hope to sell lots of tickets. According to Lois Toeppe the format this year is like Jeopardy on TV. Answers will cover women who made headlines in the last two years. Some members still have seats available at their tables. Contact Beverly Fletchall who is selling them. There will be several baskets to look at - which should tempt you to buy several raffle tickets. Then the lunch courses alternating with the questions should be tasty as well as great fun. BRING LOTS OF FRIENDS Let’s Make this Fund-raiser a BIG SUCCESS Diane Waronka Co-President
