A group of children execute some exercise in style Wednesday afternoon at
the Ridgecrest Branch Library as Infinite Movement Academy held a free
hands-on parkour and freerunning demonstration. Coaches provided an obsta-
cle course and some pointers on the sport. Parkour is a sport that involves
overcoming obstacles without assistive equipment in the fastest, most effi-
cient way possible. It usually involves running, jumping, swinging, rolling and
vaulting. Freerunning comes into play when a person decides to add their own
personal style. Infinite Movement Academy offers courses and open gym for
all levels and is located at 215 Balsam Street, and online at www.infinite-

Whiskey Flat Days
California’s Whiskey Flat Days is along-standing Southern California tra-dition and one of the most popularfestivals in the area. The festival invitesguests to step back in time to the daysof the Wild West with attractions likea rodeo, parade, carnival rides, a WildWest. Whiskey Flat Days is held everyPresident’s Day weekend (Feb. 16-17
this year). It is a leap back to the goodol’ Wild West days when the area wassettled by gold miners, cattle ranchersand trappers. Join us when Kernvillereverts to its old name “Whiskey Flat”for four nostalgic days of fun for theentire family.
California City is, according to eBirdnumbers, the third-hottest hotspot forbirding in Southern California, and is
in the Top 10 for the state. This is dueto several manmade migrant traps.Central Park, and the surrounding golfcourses, and Silver Saddle, a privateclub, at the base of Galileo Hill werebuilt 40-50 years ago.
Wildflower season at Red RockCanyon State Park
Wildflower season at Red RockCanyon can be a spectacular thing to
behold. During a good season — mean-ing ample rains during the fall and thelack of a sudden heat wave; Red Rockis painted with purples, yellows, golds, pinks, and a variety of other colors.
Commonly, you can find many speciesof desert wildflowers in the area; suchas, Mojave Aster, Monkey Flowers, Yel-low Primrose, Indigo Bush, and theexotic looking Desert Trumpet, to justname a few.
Wildflower season is generally frommid-March through April and intoMay. Occasionally, on really good yearsit can extend into June if weather isstill mild.
During this time you can find flowersthroughout all of the park. Some areasare often better for wildflower viewingthan others, it is strictly dependent onweather and pollination restrictions. It is always a good idea to check inwith the Visitor Center, or the Wild-flower Hotline at 661-724-1180, to de-termine the best viewing areas of theseason.
