Sometimes people can’t be bothered to look after

Editor-in-Chief’s Comment

Ah, pets! The great domesticated animals that we grow to love. I’m sure many of you have a pet- be it a dog, cat, gecko or goldfish. I am one hundred percent sure that you all love your pets very dearly, but what I would like to tell you today is that pets have the same emotions as we do (we think) and when not treated well, it can be extremely upsetting for all animals. I’m sure you have seen those adverts of the very badly treated dogs on TV, and that’s all real. It’s not just put on so we donate money- it’s real. Imagine your dog going through what those dogs had to go through. It would have been horrible. So my message today for you to go away and ponder about is that you should treat all animals the same , whether it is the smallest of fish or largest of dogs; we should treat them like humans and be kind and loving to all our pets as nothing should go through what those dogs on TV went through.

My Pet Alpacas

by Harry Huby

An alpaca is a camel like mammal that looks like a llama but is smaller and cuter. My family and I have six alpacas roaming our fields. I shall tell you everything you need to know about alpacas.

Let me introduce my alpacas:

1: Holly has a beautiful brown colour and was born in winter 2014 which makes her the youngest alpaca.

2: Tulip is a young, fun and adventurous alpaca with a white fleece and a very cute afro! 3: Rose is a glamorous, pretty and kind alpaca who also has a white fleece.

4: Freddie is our only male alpaca, he has a brown coat and loves running around!

5: Buttercup is a loving alpaca with a black fleece and is mother to Rose and Tulip.

6: Daisy is the most friendly and courageous alpaca we have; she always comes up to the gate and is the mother of Holly.

My alpacas eat mostly grass but in the winter we put a hay bail out and it will be eaten within two weeks.

My alpacas mostly sleep outside, but when it gets cold they go in their warm shelter.

How To Train Your Dog

By Otis Walker

How to teach your dog to sit

1. Move to your dog’s level, either lie or sit on the

floor next to the dog or sit in a chair next to it.

2. Hold a treat near to your dog’s nose and let his

head follow the treat when you move your hand

with the treat up.

3. As his head comes up, his or her backside will hopefully go down. If it does not, place your hand gently on the dog’s hind and push very lightly down. Be careful not to hurt your dog.

4. When its backside hits the floor say sit and give the dog a treat. Repeat this often. (Works best when the dog is a puppy)

How to teach your dog to stay

1. Command your dog to sit 2. Hold a treat in your hand and take one pace

back while holding your hand towards the dog. If it stays, say stay

3. Every day repeat this, taking one more step each time.

How to teach your dog to lie down

1. First tell your dog to sit 2. Then put a treat in your hand and put your

hand on the floor (make sure the dog knows the smell of the treat)

3. When the dog’s nose lowers and the dog is lying down, say lie down and give the dog a treat

Bearded Dragons

by Henry Packham

I love Bearded Dragons. I've got one called Merl who is really cool, so I thought you might like to

learn a bit about them.

Bearded Dragons are a kind of lizard and are reptiles. The Bearded Dragons scientific name is

Pogona Vitticeps.

Bearded Dragons are only naturally found in Australia’s desert regions. Australia banned the

export of wildlife in the 1960s, so all Bearded Dragons are now bred outside Australia. Bearded

Dragons were first introduced in the United States in the 1990s and since then have become

really popular pets.

They can generally grow between 12-24 inches long from head to tail. There are many different

colours and this depends on environment they came from. . They have spikes around their heads

that look a bit like a beard.

When they are young it is very difficult to tell whether they are male or female. That's why I chose

the name Merl. If it's a boy, I will call him Merlin, and if it's a girl, I will call her Merle.

They can be kept in a glass container called a vivarium. They need a heater and a light as well as

some food and somewhere for them to climb. Bearded Dragons like to be very hot, as they

originate from deserts, so you should keep them at around 30-32 degrees. My bearded dragon

likes to cling onto his heater. They eat mealworms, locusts and grasshoppers as well as cabbage

and spinach leaves.

You need to be careful because they can carry a disease called salmonella, which can make

humans very sick, so after touching them, you need to wash your hands.

Unlike some lizards, they will not re-grow their tails if they are damaged, so be careful! They also

shed their skins as they grow.

Bearded Dragons like being handled and will sit on you or climb over you. Sometimes they wave

at you. When they are bigger you can take them for a walk on a lead!

Weird and Wacky Pets by Oliver Gill

This week I will be writing about weird and wacky pets from the past or present or celebrities that own the pets or just plain weird pets that you can own.

John Quincy Adams'Pet One of the Presidents of the United States owned a rather big and dangerous pet. Yes, he owned a CROCODILE!! To make matters even more wacky, it was given to him as a GIFT from Marquis de Lafayette. Imagine that! You are just opening your Christmas presents and you get a crocodile!

Harrods Pet Shop Pets

Opened in 1917, this pet shop is famous for its wacky pet selling. They started by selling lions and panthers and yes you could buy these as pets! A U.S president rang up to buy an ELEPHANT, which was his party’s national symbol. Unfortunately, its exotic wares were outlawed in 1976 due to the Endangered Species Act. Apparently, legend has it that when Ronald Reagan rang up, the receiver said: 'Would that be African or Indian, sir?'!

The Bearded Dragon

It maybe is not the most wacky pet, but it is highly unusual to have one. Known as a Pogona, this animal is very territorial. It will eat mainly insects at a young age. A captive adult, on a good diet, will live for 12 years. If you have this animal at home, it can be a tricky animal to care for. I used many websites for this article.

Facts about my cat by William Bate

Jazzy is a black cat and she is 14 years old

Jazzy has green eyes and most of her teeth have fallen out

She came to us at 6 months old as a rescue cat and her name was Delia – we changed it to Jazzy

She used to bring lots of dead mice and birds as “presents” for us and leave them on the doorstep.

She doesn’t do this so much now as she is getting older

At Christmas she has fresh prawns for her Christmas dinner

She sometimes sleeps on my bed, but purrs a lot and keeps me awake!

She likes to go out lots and sometimes sits on our doorstep to watch what’s going on in our street.

She used to be very grumpy when she was younger. She once clamped herself to my brother’s head and made him cry and once she scratched my nose – I still have the scar. She doesn’t do this anymore!

Newfoundlands

by Lily Edwards

Newfoundland’s are a breed of dog that can grow up to 71 cm - now that is big! They also come in all

different colours (well apart from rainbow). Here are the colours: Black, Brown, Landseer (Black and

white) and grey. Their coat is very furry and fluffy but the one problem is that because they have such

furry and fluffy fur, you have to groom them. If you don’t groom them, their skin will start to get sore and

flaky. The other problem is that they are VERY messy eaters and drinkers. Also you must train them, if you

get them as a puppy, because when they get really big they will be hard to handle. Their coat is also

waterproof. That’s because they are lifesaving dogs, so if there was danger in the sea, they can go and

save whoever is in danger.

Here are 8 rules you must follow to get a healthy and happy Newfoundland puppy:

1. Walk your puppy for at least 20 mins every day.

2. Don’t let your puppy run endlessly after a ball.

3. Never let your puppy play on a full tummy.

4. Don’t feed your puppy after exercise.

5. Be careful how much your puppy weighs. If it is overweight, it can lead to health

problems.

6. Give your puppy a quiet place to sleep.

7. Do not let your puppy go up and down the stairs in its first year.

8. Hold your puppy carefully. One hand under its chest and one between its back legs.

All dogs are allergic to some things. This is some of the things that are bad for your dogs at home: wires,

chocolate, avocado, onions and garlic, grapes and raisins. Some people think that a dog eating grass is bad

for the dog but it is nothing to be worried about.

This is my Newfoundland puppy, Inca!

How To Start Keeping Fish

by James Packham

The most important thing to do before you start setting up your aquarium is to make sure that

you're fully prepared.

You also need to be patient as it can take several weeks to get your tank working properly.

Decide which fish you want but choose ones that are easy to look after to start with.

It is a good idea to get the biggest tank you can afford.

Select the right place for your tank away from loud noises, heat and light.

As well as the tank, you will need equipment including a net, tap water conditioner, a filter, a

heater, thermometer and pump. A spare heater and tank, just in case, would be a good idea.

You can also get decorations such as tiny castles, skulls (my favourite) and plants to put in your

tank.

You will need to set up your tank and check the water is the right temperature and the right

chemistry. This can take a long time and so you shouldn’t rush and get your fish.

Remember the Chlorine in tap water and cleaning soaps are really bad for your fish. There are

bugs that need to grow in the water and filters that are needed to clean the water of the fish

pee.

Add your fish a few at a time so the bugs in the water can increase to deal with the waste the

fish produce.

The fish will normally come in a plastic bag. You should put the fish inside the bag in the water

and leave it for at least 15 minutes before letting the fish out of the bag so it is not too much of a

shock.

You need to be careful not to overfeed your fish. It won’t make them explode, but all the

uneaten food will float about and contaminate the water.

Budgies or budgerigars

by Jai Patel

Budgies originate from the Australian Outback. They live in large flocks, some of which

can be in the thousands. In the wild, they are all one colour - green. Captive budgies come in

a variety of colours. The reason for this is when budgies breed in captivity occasionally a

mutation occurs and a different coloured budgie is produced. In the wild these mutations also

occur but do not usually survive because they become easy prey and the green budgies are

not interested in breeding with them.

How to look after your budgie…

The Cage

Budgies need quite a lot of space because they get very claustrophobic. They are used

to flying around in the open spaces. Don’t overcrowd their cage with lots of toys because

the budgies feel squashed. You can put a few toys in like bells , ladders , balls and

swings, so that they don’t get bored.

Don’t buy a circular/round cage because they cannot stretch their wings and fly around,

which is what they like to do.

The cage should be kept in a light room that is not too hot or cold. Budgies should not be

kept in direct sunlight or draughty places. Fluctuating temperatures can harm or even kill

budgies.

Cages should cleaned out at least once a week using a specific cleaner that is safe and

not toxic to budgies.

At night you should cover the cage with a towel or blanket. This helps to cut down on

noise and make your budgie feel secure. Make sure the cage has enough ventilation.

Food

Their main diet consists of Budgie food. This can be bought from pet shops and some

supermarkets. This food consists of different seeds. You can also give your budgie some

fresh fruit and vegetables.

Cuttle Bone

This is the bone taken from a dried cuttlefish. Budgies like to nibble on these and they

are a good source of calcium for them.

Water Budgies need fresh water every day. This is to stop any harmful bacteria from building up

in the water.

My Dog Tilly By Toby Gaulton

I have a dog- called Tilly. Tilly is a Black Labrador, and she is 5 years old. Tilly is very funny. She is quite

small for a female Black Labrador as she is only 53cm tall from paw to shoulder. She has a brown collar

with a turquoise micro-chip tag to show that she has been micro-chipped. Tilly was born on the 12th of April

2011.

As a puppy, Tilly was very cute! When we got her she was exactly 2 months old, as we got on the 12th of

June. When we got her on the first 3 nights she was upset about being away from her mum, Sasha, for the

first time and she cried, so my mum had to go down and comfort her twice a night to see if she was OK.

When Tilly was a puppy, she chewed up most of her toys because she was growing her teeth and it was

hurting her, so she was doing something about the pain. As well when she was teething, she would chew

up the bird table. On the day we went to look at the dogs to see Sasha’s pups’ (Sasha had 6.) my sister

and I crawled in to the big dog kennel to see the 2 week old pups and to choose which pup we would have.

In the end we chose to have Tilly who all of us thought was the cutest. The owner of Tilly had wanted to

keep her and give us Tilly’s sister, Gem. I think Tilly still has her puppy face.

Tilly enjoys a lot of things. Her favourite things are: long walks, jumping up at my mum, eating dog food,

playing with her toys, playing fetch with her ball thrower and playing hide and seek. In hide and seek, Tilly

is very good, as she has a brilliant sense of smell, so she can find my sister and I very quickly. When you

play fetch with her, she is very quick and she gets the ball very quickly. You have to throw it a long way

because Tilly needs a lot of exercise. Tilly enjoys long walks on our bikes as she gets to run for ages. At

home Tilly likes playing with her toys: Gumo the goat, Derek the dog, Danny the dog, and Colin the cow.

Her favourite toy is Derek the dog because he is the thinnest of them and the easiest to hold. Tilly likes

people more than dogs.

Living with Tilly is really nice because Tilly is never naughty, is very friendly with children and adults, likes a

great big fuss and just likes to please you. Having a pet in the house is really great because it helps you to

bond with animals and helps you grow up with another creature.

I really like Tilly because she is so funny, loves everyone and never barks or growls.

If you are thinking about getting a pet, I would say get a dog, because they are so loving and very

interactive with other dogs and people and they make great pets. Tilly is the best dog ever and I love her,

but I wish she would stay a puppy forever!

PAWS OFF- PRIVATE!!

7/5/16

Hello! Today was awesome! Even awesomer than yesterday when I got to smell 10 bushes and meet 5 dogs, all on one walk!

Anyway, the first awesome thing that happened today was that my two favourite visitors came round: Pete and Ollie! Pete is a builder that sometimes works in the yard. He is very nice and always dances with me whenever we meet! When he came today, he took me for a long walk, even though he has a lot to do (building a house or something) and he even let me say hello to all the lovely dogs we met!

When we got back from our exciting walk, the shiny, silver car came in the drive! If you don’t know what the shiny, silver car means, it means that my bestest dog-friend in the whole wide world, Ollie, is coming for a walk!

My tail started wagging so much as I heard him bark but he just ran under the car! I don't know why he always does that because we're best friends! Anyway I'm sure he was delighted to see me, as he always is!

I had found a new smell earlier today, and I was desperate to show it to him! But he just wouldn’t come out from underneath the car.

My owner, Andy, says I’m too excitable and enthusiastic and that Olly wants to be left alone! But how is it possible to be too excitable? And how is it possible to want to be left alone? I bet Andy was just joking, like the time he thought that going to a meeting was more important than me smelling a bush! That was funny!

Anyway, Olly finally came out from under the car; but then he had to go for his walk! But it didn’t matter because as soon as he left, Buttercup (my other bestest friend, who is an alpaca) came to the gate, we had a long conversation about food- yum!

Talking about food- I finally discovered where Andy hides my treats! I just need to figure out how to pick the lock…

Celebrities’ Amazing Pets

By Elizabeth Allan-Jones

1. Guns n’ Roses guitarist, Slash, has a pet snake.

2. Ariana Grande has a dog called Sirius Black

3. Justin Bieber has a pet capuchin monkey called Mali.

4. Michael Jackson had a chimpanzee

5. Mike Tyson has a pet tiger.

6. Katy Perry has a cat called Kitty Purry!

7. George Clooney has a pig called Max.

8. Zayn Malik has a VERY cute dog called Teddy.

9. Elvis Presley had a pet kangaroo.

10. Leonardo Dicaprio has a tortoise.

As you can see, lots of celebrities have some

pretty amazing pets. Would you like a

monkey or a tiger or even a chimpanzee or a

kangaroo? I don’t think they are for me, but

you might already have a snake and some of

you might have a pig (but that’s quite unlikely).

But if none of them are for you then lots of

them have normal ones like rabbits, cats and

dogs

What if the Queen came to my house for the day?

by Ben Jacobi

I have done some research into what the Queen likes to eat. As you would imagine, the Queen

has many chefs to cook her meals. The Queen has a menu given to her; she simply ticks what

she'd like to eat that week and draws a line through the rest - anything with chocolate or

ingredients from her farms often getting the royal nod of approval. However, if the Queen came to

my house this is what I would serve to her.

Breakfast

Her Majesty would start the day with breakfast served at 9am which include cereal, such as

Cornflakes or Special K, with fruit sprinkled on top as this is her favourite.

Lunch

Lunch would be served around 1pm, which would include some kind of fish on a bed of wilted

spinach or with courgettes. The Queen doesn’t eat strong flavours like garlic and onions.

Afternoon Tea

I would offer her a selection of cakes, scones and crust-free sandwiches. The Queen loves honey

and cream sponge and chocolate biscuit cake. And of course loves the British tradition of scones

with cream and jam. When she is in the palace, the queen occasionally gives some of scones to

the royal corgis which they wolf down.

Supper

A light supper of chicken and fresh vegetables followed by a fresh fruit salad. These fruits would

be grown on one of her many farms.

If you look in your cupboards, on some of the foods you might find the Royal Warrant. If you see

this is means that the Queen uses it in the palace. Here are some examples Colman’s Mustard,

HP Sauce and Heinz beans.

Ben’s article did not appear in the paper last week for reasons beyond my control. Here it is for your

delight this week. I think you will agree that it is a super article – not to be missed. Ms Case
