    Mr CadburyBy Otis Walker

John Cadbury started his work in a small grocery

store selling all sorts of food as well as a few types

    of chocolate.

By 1831 Mr Cadbury bought a four-storey building

so the chocolate factory could expand. This worked

because by 1842 John Cadbury was selling no less

than 11 different types of chocolate.

John's health rapidly declined and he finally retired

in 1861, handing over complete control of the

business to his sons, Richard and George. The

brothers were just 25 and 21 when they took

    charge of the company.

The first Cadbury Easter egg was made in 1875.

The earliest eggs were made with dark chocolate

and had a smooth, plain surface. They were filled

with small chocolate drops known as 'dragees’.

In 1879 the factory was relocated to Bournville near

Birmingham. Architect, George H. Gadd worked

closely with George Cadbury to draw up plans forthe factory.

In 1905 Cadbury launched their first logo, the

designer of the logo was a Frenchman who also

designed the logo for the Paris Metro.

In the Second World War Cadbury introduced

ration chocolate when the government banned

manufacturers from using fresh milk. Instead there

was Ration Chocolate, made with dried skimmed

    milk powder.

In 1971, the first crème egg was created and these

are the crème eggs we know now.

Now there are many types of Cadbury’s chocolate

    Simply Fascinating

    Facts About The

    Easter Bunny

    By Jonathan Baguley

The Easter Bunny is often linked with the

goddess Eostre. Eostre was a German

goddess and Easter was named after her.

The first stories about The Easter Bunny

were from Germany. They were first

    mentioned in the 1500s.

Originally the “Easter Hare” played the

role of a judge, deciding whetherchildren were showing good or

disobedient behaviour at the start of the

    Easter season.

The tradition was that children would

make nests in their bonnets and caps for

The Easter Bunny to lay coloured eggs in.

But The Easter Bunny would only lay the

eggs if the child had been good.

The first edible Easter Bunnies weremade in the 1800s, made with pastry and

    sugar.

The Easter Bunny was introduced to the

Americans in the 1700s by German

settlers. The German settlers arrived in

    the Pennsylvania Dutch country. The

word “Dutch” is nothing to do with

Holland; it was misheard from the word

    “Deutsch”, which is German for

    “German”.

Here are some movies with The Easter

Bunny in: HOP – A rabbit is about to

become the Easter Bunny but he doesn’t

want to so he runs away; Rise Of The

Guardians – An evil force awakes so the

    Guardians (Santa Claus, The Easter

Bunny, The Tooth Fairy, Sandman andJack Frost have to rotect the children.

    What You Can Find In

    The Hedgerow At

    Easter

    By Lily Edwards

Spring is a beautiful time of year  –  when all

sorts of things are coming alive again after the

winter. This article is about some things you

can find in the hedgerows in spring time - here

are some plants and animals to look out for.

You might be lucky and find a nesting bird  –

maybe even fledglings which are baby birds

before they can fly. Great tits are very

common to see. If you see a nest don’t touch

it though  – you might scare off mum and dad

bird and then the babies won’t get any food!

Another thing to look out for are butterflies, and

common in the spring is painted lady

butterflies. They are very colourful and pretty.

Hedgehogs are also coming out of hibernation

so look out for them  –  but don’t feed them!

    You can make them ill.

Lots of plants are starting to grow  –  if you go

on to wildlifewatch.org.uk and go to hedgerow

detective, they list lots of things you might find

when you are out and about in the Easter

holidays. Plants like primrose, hawthorn which

has lovely white flowers, speedwell which is

one of the first plants of spring and lots ofothers.

Who knew the hedgerow was so busy! See

what you can find this Easter!

    EASTER IN OTHER

    COUNTRIES

    By Toby Gaulton

This week in Totally Tockington, we made the

theme Easter. Last year I hope you rememberdoing this paper and I did ‘The First Easter

Eggs’. This time I thought I would do Easter In

Other Countries. Strap yourselves in people

you’re in for a big ride!

Greece You think of Greece as a place that is

calm and people go on holiday there for sun?

Yes? Well not at Easter! This is Greek Easter.

In Orthodox Churches in Greece a tomb is

placed in the middle of the Church. People

come to the service like going to a funeral.

They have a service on Saturday before

midnight. Priests then give people a candle to

light at midnight. Fireworks could be used as

well. On Easter Sunday, a soup is eaten for

breakfast that is made with a lamb’s belly. Later

they eat a cake made with orange and almonds

    and a spicy orange sauce.

Ethiopia You might think Ethiopia is poor but at

Easter they have a huge celebration. They

don’t buy any animal products or meat at

Easter. On Palm Sunday they wear a hat of

crosses. Their first celebration is 7 hours long

and starts at 20:00 on Saturday and is on till

03:00 on Sunday. People wear clothes called ‘

Yabesha Libs’. People can light a candle made

of cotton and wax. People eat a sourdough

bread that is cut by the Priest. At dinner a stewcalled beg wot is eaten.

Mexico There are two festivals in Mexico. One

is called Semana Santa and the other called

Pascua. Semana Santa is more important than

Pascua. People buy palms outside of the

churches to hang on their doors to ward off all

the evil spirits. On the Sunday of Pascua

people normally go to church. There is even a

    fun-fair in Pascua.

    EASTER BUNNIES

    Which is your favourite?

    Toby’s article continued…

In Semana Santa they act out plays of Easter and

Jesus. The actor has to be strong to carry a cross

of 91kg. The most famous play is in Iztapalapa in

    which everyone is involved.

Give your Dog a Treat this Easter

    By Carmen Rey-Jones

    The Easter story

    By Elizabeth Allan- Jones

The story begins when Jesus invites his

disciples to the Last Supper. He offers to wash

their feet but Peter doesn’t want his feet

washed. Jesus says, “Tonight one of you will

betray me.” Just then, Judas Iscariot walks out.

He has gone to betray Jesus to the guards.

Then Jesus says, “Drink this wine; it represents

my blood,” then he says, “Eat this bread; it

represents my body.” Then he passes it round.

When everyone has finished eating and

drinking, Jesus walks to the garden ofGethsemane to pray. While Jesus is praying, he

asks James, John and Peter to watch over him,

but they fall asleep. As that happens, Judas

and the guards arrive. They had been sent by

the priest to arrest Jesus. Judas kisses Jesus

on the cheek to identify him to the guards; the

guards seize Jesus. Peter cuts off one of the

guards’ ears but Jesus said he shouldn’t have

done it and heals the ear.

Next, the guards dress Jesus in a purple robe

and the crown of thorns. The guards nail Jesus

onto the cross and as soon as Jesus dies, they

take him off the cross, put him in the tomb and

seal the entrance. Two days later a friend of

Jesus’s called Mary Magdalen went to see the

tomb but the body of Jesus and the tomb stone

had gone. Just as she was telling Peter and

John about it, a man that she did not know

approached her - the man was Jesus!

Jesus told the disciples that when he has gone

to heaven the Holy Spirit will be with them. Then

Angels came and said, “Do not be sad. Jesus

    will return one day.”

Easter eggs are given at Easter because they celebrate new life.

Easter is a Christian festival which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The bible says

Christ died on the cross on Good Friday and came back to life three days later.

The egg is a symbol of Jesus’ resurrection, as when they are cracked open they stand for an empty

tomb. No one actually knows that Easter eggs were first used as symbols at festival times.

Many years ago people gave eggs carved from wood or precious stones. The first sweet eggs were

made in the last 100 years from sugar or marzipan. Chocolate Easter eggs were first made in

Europe in the early 19th Century.

Our DucksBy Tabitha and Harry Huby

In 2012 we decided to get some duck eggs and raise them up to live on our pond. This is

    how we did it.

    Step 1

First we bought an incubator and three duck

eggs. The breed of duck we got is called Khaki

    Campbell.

The incubator heated the eggs and

automatically turned them around every hour,

so that the whole egg was warm.

After a few weeks the eggs started hatching.

    Step 2

We were very lucky that all three

ducks survived, there were two girls

and one boy, we called them Daffy,

    Daphne and Tom.

Once they had hatched we put

them in a container with a heat lamp

    to keep them warm.

    Step 3

Then we made a shelter to put them in outside on the lawn. We had to spray the ducks with

water and we played with them sometimes.

    Step 4

When the ducks were old enough, we built them a

floating wooden home so that they could live on the

pond. And they were very happy!

Easter Egg Trees By Jai Patel

Easter egg trees come from Germany and are known as

Ostereierbaum. It is a tradition at Easter time to

decorate the branches of trees and bushes with different

coloured eggs. It is also popular to make indoor Eastertrees using cut branches. I am going to tell you how you

can make your very own Easter tree at home.

To make your Easter tree you will

    need the following items:

    1. Some cut branches from your garden. Get an adult to help you with this.2. A vase to display the branches.3. A small piece of cardboard to make your egg template.4. Paper; different coloured and patterned paper, or you can decorate plain paper

using pens, pencils, glitter etc.5. Some string.

    6.  A stapler, hole punch and scissors.

How to make your Easter tree

    1. Get an adult to help you cut some branches in your garden. It is best to cut the branches a

few days before you need them because you want them to be nice and dry. You can dry

them by placing them on some newspaper and leaving them in a dry place. You candecorate the branches if you .want by either painting them or putting glitter on. Once you are

happy with your branches, put them in your vase.

    2. Draw an egg shape on your cardboard. This can be as big or small as you want it to be

but it needs to hang from your branches. Cut the egg shape out of the cardboard.Using your

cardboard egg template cut out 4 egg shapes from your paper.

    3. Once you have cut out your eggs you can now decorate them. If you havepatterned or coloured paper you can leave them as they are, it’s up to you.

    4. Once you are happy with your paper eggs, place them on top of each other so it

looks like you have one egg. 5. Then take a stapler and staple lengthways down the middle of the egg. 6. Take a hole punch and make a hole in the top of the egg.7. Fold lengthways the piece of paper at the front and back of your egg where the

staples show.8. Cut a piece of string and thread it through the hole in the egg. You can adjust

your length of string depending on how you want your egg to hang.9. Now hang your egg on your branches. You can make as many eggs as you want.

Make sure they will fit on your branches. You can make eggs

    from lots of different

things to go on yourtree or even use my

    favourite, chocolate

    ones !!
