get near to red light. But amid such condition, the government seems unable to do much in preserving the nature of Bali and even it gives an impression if it sacrifices the environment on behalf of tourism and development.

An environmental activist, Agung Wardana, Monday (Jun 4) said the environmental problems had not been a priority in the development, both in the provincial and regency/municipal government throughout Bali.

Denpasar (Bali Post) –The use of Light Emitting Diode (LED) advertising at Sudirman-Dewi

Sartika Street which has been planned since August 2011 until now still not finished and it is worried that this long wait will cause low tax retribu-tion or even none moreover manual advertisement were no longer there as questioned by Commission B Denpasar House of Representatives member, I Wayan Suadi Putra, last Monday (4/6). “Why is the LED advertising in Sudirman not finished. This has cause disturbance as it is taking too long,” Putra stated.

This condition caused Head of Cleanliness and Grounds Agency of Denpasar, Ketut Wisada, accompanied by Head of Denpasar Council Public Relation News Sub Head, Dewa Gede Rai, in stating that they have demanded the investors to operate it as the condition now with its screen not there destroyed the city’s image. Besides that the LED screen’s 1 meter pole seemed to short so the screen height was increased.“We have demanded it, we don’t want this to be seen as something unfinished,” Wisada stated.

Apparently right now the investor will soon grant the Agency’s wish yet couldn’t guarantee when it will be done as they have technical difficulties such as the panels, programs, software and hardware. Before this project was delayed due to the State Electricity Company cable was passing by the Led screen. Besides that, its position was above a pedestrian yet has been fixed. This LED fixation was purposed to decrease any kind of banners that is usually used. (kmb12)

Chairman of Commission B of the Badung House, I Made Sum-erta, Monday (Jun 4), disclosed the road access in the area of the Udayana University, Jimbaran actually became one of the faces of Badung Regency. By all means, it had long become the path to Pecatu tourist attraction and the surround-ing area. Unavailability of road median along with the arrangement of roadside gardens created the im-pression that relevant agencies did not pay attention to the matter.

With the current condition along with unclear arrangement of the region, it was feared to hurt the image of Badung tourism. “More-over, we know, it’s the campus area. The environment should be well arranged,” criticized the legislator from Pecatu.

Sumerta further revealed if the Udayana University was unable to do the arrangement, the role of Badung Regency was very much

needed. On that account, both par-ties were expected to establish a good synergy for the purpose.

When confirmed separately, the Head of Badung Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, Putu Eka Merthawan, explained his party had set up the arrangement for the area of Udayana University. For the entrance, a project had been tendered this year for the area arrangement valued at IDR 300 million. Then in 2013, it would be resumed to the south gates with the re-arrangement of road median and roadside garden.

Arrangement area of the Udaya-na University, particularly around the gates, was the request of the Udayana University to the Regent of Badung. Its studies had been prepared since last year. Now, the whole procedures had passed, and it was expected to begin on next July 1, where the first phase arrangement would be started co-

inciding with the road median of the Nusa Dua road section.

Aside from the arrangement of the gates and roadside garden along the Udayana University, the Badung Regency would also request the land to be transformed into a city park or city forest. It was based on the consider-ation that Udayana University remained to have a vacant land. According to Eka Merthawan, rather than resulting in a new problem, namely the rampant sidewalk traders, the vacant land would be better if used for creat-ing a park or urban forest.

“For this plan, we have just pre-pared the master plan. However, we have not discussed it with the Udayana University related to the request of land utilization approxi-mately reaching 0.37 hectares in the driveway area to the Udayana University for the city park or ur-ban forest,” he added. (kmb25)

Denpasar (Bali Post) –The plan of Elementary Education General Director of Education and

Culture Ministry (Kemendikbud) giving scholarships to 20 students for highest Junior High National Examination grade in national level responded positively by Head of Bali Education, Sport and Youth Agency (DIsdikpora) Drs. A. A. Ngurah Gede Sujaya, M.Pd.. If the policy is applied that means there are 11 pupils from SMPN 1 Denpasar get that scholarship yet it is not known yet if the budget comes from the State or Regional remembering this has been handed over to each regions. “Principally we truly agree with this plan as giving an award for their great achievement yet if the budget comes from the regional we can’t do it this year as the budget has been planned well,” A.A. Ngurah Gede Sujaya stated when contacted by Bali post, last Monday (4/6).

His side has coordinated with the General Director to confirm for the budget source as if it comes from regional then he has to hand a proposal first to the Bali House of Representatives to be discussed while if it comes from central then they are ready to facilitate. The same was stated by Head of Disdikpora for Denpasar City, Ir. IGN Eddy Mulya, SE, MM. He admitted not to know the details well yet it is the Provincial Agency who is responsible for it more-over the highest scores data is there already. As told before there are 11 pupils of SMPN 1 Denpasar managed to be the national level best 20 pupils with highest score with first reached by Ni Putu Tamara Bidari Suweta with score 40.00 then fifth to fourteenth pupils of SMPN 1 Denpasar. “If it comes from the regional who prepares, then it has to suit with the regional budget. Con-necting to the scholarship’s form either subsides on education fee or an item, we still don’t know. We will coordinate further with the provincial agency,” Mulya stated.(kmb13)

Its passenger was dragged out and plunged into the sea. Such strong waves made the boat finally broke out. Then, it ran aground onto the beach, exactly near the Dalem

Temple of Selabih. Luckily, the victim could swim well. As soon as the boat overturned, the victim tried to escape.

Mangupura (Bali Post)—PT Java Books Indonesia and Periplus Bookindo presented

Michael Freeman, a world-renowned photographer from England on Monday (Jun 4). In the event entitled ‘Michael Freeman’s Storytelling with Photograph’ Michael Freeman shared his expertise in photography on how to plan, take and display photograph clearly.

Michael Freeman said when people used camera for the first time they mostly tried to master the controls but neglected the idea. They photographed intuitively, liked or disliked what they saw without stopping to think why and framed the view in the same way.

“As a matter of fact, photography is easy. You just have to think of the idea to be taken. A photographer must have a plan, such as determining the object and the theme of pho-tographs to be taken,” he said.

On that occasion, Michael Freeman also showed a num-ber of photographs that could have been perpetuated. This British man also told the history through photographs. “I’ve also made documentation on Indonesia, especially about the magnum and national photography,” he said.

Michael Freeman is one of the photographers whose works are widely published in the world. He has made a long jour-ney for the tasks of shooting, especially in Asia. His newly reportage book is The Tea Horse Road denoting the result of a two-year exploration to one of the longest trade routes in the ancient world spreading between China and Tibet.

Michael Freeman began to be known as a photographer since his first book Athens published in 1978. It was followed by two other books namely Guardians of the North-West Frontier: The Pathans (1982) and Wayfarers of the Thai Forest: The Akha where the two books can be found in the Time-Life series entitled Peoples of the Wild. Freeman has worked for a long time with Smithsonian Magazine and later with the National Geographic Magazine. He wrote over 40 books on photography, and two books entitled Light and Im-age were awarded the Prix Louis Philippe Clerc in 1990 by the Musée Française de la Photographie in Bièvres, France. One of his main specialties is about the Asian culture, archi-tecture and archeology.

Freeman also visited Bali Post and share his knowledge to the photograpers of the media. He gave many inputs to the particpants of the short discussion. (par)

HANOI, Vietnam — “If Dad calls, tell him I got too close to being dead but I’m O.K. I was real lucky. I’ll write again soon.”

That poignant message never reached the mother of Army Sgt. Steve Flaherty. He was killed in Vietnam in 1969 before he could mail the letters he was carrying, including one he might have been writing when he died. The letters were taken by the Vietnamese after his death, U.S. officials said in re-leasing excerpts on Monday.

The letters, chronicling the car-nage and exhaustion of war, were

given to Defense Secretary Leon Pa-netta in exchange for a Vietnamese soldier’s diary that was taken from his body by an American GI. The letters will be returned to Flaherty’s family in South Carolina.

Vietnamese Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh and Panetta made the exchange in a ceremony in which the Vietnamese also agreed to open three new sites in the country for excavation by the United States to search for troop remains from the war. Acidic soil in Vietnam erodes bones quickly, leaving in many cases only teeth for military teams to use to try and identify service members.

Ron Ward, U.S. casualty resolu-

tion specialist at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Ha-noi, said there are at least four U.S. troops believed to be lost in the three areas that are being opened. That leaves eight sites still restricted by the Vietnamese, he said.

Memories of the Vietnam War are fading for many Americans, and the war is the stuff of textbooks for oth-ers. But it is brought vividly alive in Sgt. Flaherty’s letters. The mail from the Columbia, S.C., native to his mother, Lois, and two women iden-tified only as Mrs. Wyatt and Betty, offer emotional accounts of his fear — and also his determination.

“I felt bullets going past me,” Flaherty writes to Betty. “I have never been so scared in my life.”

“We took in lots of casualties and death,” he writes. “We dragged more bodies of dead and wounded than I can ever want to forget.”

“Thank you for your sweet card. It made my miserable day a much better one but I don’t think I will ever forget the bloody fight we are having. ... RPG rockets and machine guns really tore my rucksack.”

By 1969, the war was sharply dividing Americans back home, but Flaherty tells Mrs. Wyatt he still believes in the mission.

“This is a dirty and cruel war but I’m sure people will understand the purpose of this war even though many of us might not agree,” he writes.

Both energy and foreign policy co-operation are high on the agenda, with Putin also participating in a regional summit Wednesday and Thursday where he will separately meet the presidents of Iran and Afghanistan.

Putin’s China trip, his first to Asia since starting an historic third term last month, comes after failed attempts by EU leaders to sway him on Syria -- a Soviet-era ally Mos-cow still supplies with arms.

Beijing and Moscow have walked in lockstep on Syria to growing an-ger from Arab and Western nations, with EU President Herman Van Rompuy telling Putin in Russia on Monday that world powers needed to “find common messages on which we agree”.

Known for confronting the West repeatedly during his 2000-2008 presidency, Putin pointedly skirted the issue of Syria during Monday’s briefing with EU leaders, noting only that “our positions do not coincide on every issue”.

Putin has been keen to play up the importance of Russia’s at-times uneasy ties with China, which have grown stronger in the past year as both used their veto power on the UN Security Council to block ac-tion against Damascus.

Although the two nations had pe-riodic border conflicts and viewed each other with suspicion in Soviet times, Foreign Minister Sergei Lav-rov declared this weekend that Rus-sia had an exemplary partnership

with China on foreign policy.“All in all, we consider the co-

operation on foreign policy on all levels between Russia and China a successful model of coordination between partners,” Lavrov said in comments posted on the Russian foreign ministry’s website.

Beijing’s state-run China Daily newspaper also played up the rela-tionship between the two countries in an editorial on Tuesday, saying it was in “good shape” and “bodes well for the future”.

“At a time when East Asia and North Africa have undergone pro-found changes, Beijing and Mos-cow have been standing firmly together to safeguard the tenets of the UN charter and the norms of international relations,” it said.

Putin, who is flying to China just weeks after cancelling a visit to the United States, was due to hold extensive talks with President Hu Jintao later Tuesday.

Pakistan on Tuesday tested a fifth nuclear-capable missile since India launched a new long-range weapon capable of hitting China just over six weeks ago.

The Hatf VII cruise missile has a range of 700 kilometres (440 miles), can carry conven-tional warheads and has stealth capabilities, the military said.

It described the “low flying, terrain hugging missile with high maneuverability” as having “pinpoint accuracy” and “radar avoidance features”.

Tuesday’s test was Pakistan’s

fifth of a nuclear-capable missile since April 25. On April 20, India successfully test fired the Agni V capable of delivering a one-tonne nuclear warhead anywhere in rival China, marking a major advance in its military capabilities.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947. Each has carried out routine missile tests since both demonstrated nuclear weapons capability in 1998.

Defence analysts say India’s strategic priorities are focusing more on China, while Pakistan is still concerned about its eastern neighbour.

Temple Ceremonyalendar E ent or May through une

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sail-ings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BERLIN — A Canadian porn actor suspected of murdering and dismembering a Chinese student and mailing his body parts to Canada’s top political parties was reading about himself on the Internet when he was arrested Monday at a cafe in Berlin.

Canadian investigators say 29-year-old Luka Magnotta’s obsessions led him to post Internet videos of his killing kittens, then a man, and finally to his arrest at the cafe where he had spent two hours reading media coverage of himself.

An international manhunt set off by a case of Internet gruesomeness that captured global attention ended quietly in the working-class Neukoelln district of the German capital when a cafe employee recognized Magnotta from a newspaper photo and flagged down a police car.

Confronted by seven officers, “He tried at first giving fake names but in the end he just said: ‘You got me,’” said police spokesman Guido Busch. “ e didn t resist.”

“The matter of environmental damage is still underestimated and the government remains to handle it half-heartedly,” he said. It was still ram antly found the ermit issuance for rojects annexing the environment. Political development was more directed or expanded to tourism sector whereas this sector frequently sacrificed the environment. More and more upstream regions of Bali were getting damaged but the government had not seriously addressed it. Government was also considered unserious in handling the upstream area and it just rolled out a discourse, whereas preserving the upstream region was essential and urgent for the sake of ecological balance.

He cited the case of Dasong forest in Buleleng that had protracted for several years ago up to these days without clear solution. Although the Bali Government rejected the forest expansion, Agung assessed there had been no real follow u of such commitment. Clean and green program launched by Bali Government was also considered far from the truth. As evidence, the rubbish roblem remained to be a frightening specter. Similarly, the congestion had unclear solution and it was only handled artially just for the sake of imaging, such as resolved by the construction of Benoa-Nusa Dua toll road sacrificing the 2.3 hectares of mangrove forests.

He further assessed that Bali Government had failed to manage and secure the environment so that the subak (irrigation cooperative) should be included in World Cultural Heritage whose preservation would be carried out by international agency. According to him, it was even a roblematic environmental conservation because the area would attract more tourists so that in the long run the region would be further damaged due to massive expansion of tourism to the area. “ he land rice around Jatiluwih will rise. These suburbs will become a target of investors and it would even be hazardous,” said the academician from the Undiknas University.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Center for Environmental Studies (PPLH) of the Udayana University, Dr. I Wayan Arthana, said the moment of World Environment Day should become a means of intros ection for all parties, chiefly the government, to save the environment. Waste problem should get serious attention because in the long run it would be getting more crowded. Without being handled, it would become a boomerang and counter-productive to Bali relying on tourism sector.

Develo ment activities in Bali should closely com ly with the s atial system that paid a great attention to the concept of Green Economic that should be implemented without damaging the environment and culture.

However, he assessed the government did not have a clear planning related to the environmental conservation in Bali that was increasingly more severe and approached the red light. “The environment of Bali will be getting more and more degraded. It means the concept of green economy has not been optimal. It is re uired a concerted effort to evaluate the develo ment in Bali,” he warned. Additionally, he also assessed that im lementation of regional regulation on the regional spatial planning was inconsistent. “There has been a zoning area for tourism, industry, and agriculture but it was not im lemented consistently,” he said. JAKARTA - First Vice President of the CJSC Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, Igor L Vinogradov, declared in a written statement that the insurance payment provided to the family of each victim of the accident will be Rp1.25 billion.

The statement clarified the variety of interpretations regarding the insur-ance payment that will be given to the families of those who died in the Sukhoi crash which occurred on May at Mount Salak, Bogor, West Java.

Earlier, the consultant of Sukhoi distributor PT Trimarga Rekatama, Sunaryo, had stated that the amount of insurance to be received by the families was not yet known.

“I cannot say with certainty how

much they will get as insurance, because there was no prior agreement,” Sunaryo remarked here on Thursday.

Sunaryo added that the insurance claims were handled by lawyers from Sukhoi and Indonesia, not by PT Tri-marga, according to the rule of law, under which a company is not allowed to regulate insurance issues.

Initially, Sukhoi had planned to pro-vide an insurance payment of US 50,000 dollars - or about Rp460 million - to each victim. However, according to the Transportation Minister, victims of a commercial passenger plane crash are entitled to an insurance payment of Rp1.25 billion.

The Russian-made SSJ-100 crashed into Mount Salak on May , 2012, and all 45 passengers on board the plane were killed in the accident.

Thirty-four houses had been damaged following a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in Sukabumi, West Java, on Monday evening, accord-ing to the district s natural disaster mitigation board (BPBD). Based on BPBD data 30 houses were reported having been damaged in Cidolog

sub-district, 10 of them lightly and 15 others moderately.

“This is still temporary data and therefore the number may still in-crease as there are 47 sub-districts in Sukabumi,” BPBD head of logistics and emergency, Usman Susilo, told newsmen. Two villagers meanwhile

had been wounded after being hit by falling beams during the quake namely Imaliah (6) and Fitri (12) of Pabuaran sub-district.

“We are still collecting data of damaged houses and possible other victims,” he said

The quake struck 6 kilometres (5 miles) southwest of the city of Sukabu-mi in western Java after 6 00 pm (1100 GMT) at a depth of 67 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

The tremor was felt 200 kilomtres away in Jakarta, causing tall build-

ings to shake. “The quake was quite strong but we have no reports yet of casualties or damage. We will moni-tor the affected area,” National Di-saster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told AFP.

Nugroho said the quake struck around 50 kilometres offshore but no tsunami warning was issued, and that activities in Sukabumi had “gone back to normal”.

An AFP correspondent in Suka-bumi said residents ran from their homes in panic. “I was praying at the

time and suddenly it struck, so my husband and I ran outside the house into the yard. Luckily, I can’t see any damage to our home,” 27-year-old Hefei, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP.

The Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysics Agency earlier mea-sured it as a 6.1-magnitude quake with a depth of 24 kilometres.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates col-lide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

JAKARTA - President Susilo Yudhoyono has stated that the government is committed to implementing green economic development to promote people’s welfare without sacrificing environmental preservation.

“The green economic development approach is a major leap for us, because we have aban-doned the previous economic practices which chased short-term benefits and passed down various environmental problems,” Yudhoyono remarked here on the occasion of World Environ-ment Day on Tuesday.

Under the green economic concept, develop-ment will be directed at achieving three main objectives economic growth which will create job opportunities and reduce the poverty rate environmental preservation, particularly of the ecosystem and biodiversity and social justice.

“We are, of course, applying the green eco-

nomic principle in accordance with the condi-tions, characteristics and needs of our nation and people,” he stated. Indonesia’s green economics is an integrated and complete concept which can be implemented to achieve the development goals, which are pro-poor, pro-employment, pro-growth and pro-environment.

The concept will be supported by the presi-dential instructions on the National Action Plans to Reduce Greenhouse Gasses, on Energy Ef-ficiency and on the Deforestation Moratorium, in addition to the Presidential Decree on the Anti-Judicial Mafia Task Force.

By implementing low-carbon-emission economic development, Indonesia has committed to reduce its greenhouse emissions by 26-41 percent.

“Our green economic development strategy is to maintain economic growth at 6 to 7 percent, and at the same time, to reduce carbon emissions by 26 percent from our emission projection in 2020,” the president noted.

Pie of tourism does not always taste sweet. hose getting involved in erson or indirectly may taste so. owever, the remaining does not enjoy any im act of the increase of tourist visit to Bali. Probably, it is actually a matter of imbalance on develo ment olicy.

By and large, develo ment in general is ideally intended to im rove eo le s ros erity. Its roceedings should be distributed and could be enjoyed evenly. therwise, the imbalance can trigger social envy. If unresolved immediately, this may turn into rotracted roblem. It is not sur rising if community then ro osed the removal of Den asar City and the air ort to other region in order the new region could also drive a better economic growth. Meanwhile, another rotested that its region was just used as sto over of cruise assenger. After landing, guests s ent holidays or had e cursion to other neighboring destination. It is considered, the region was merely taken advantage for ‘urinating and guests s ent no single enny.

arious attem ts have indeed been undertaken by local government to gradually diminish

such imbalance. ne of them is by launching tourism village in regencies. By this initiative, guests are driven to e lore local village to know more about their uni ueness. hey were e ected to not only have a sightseeing tour but also take advantage of local accommodation facilities.

he rogram denotes one of the community involvements in tourism or better known as community based tourism.

Additionally, guests will have more convenient time to e lore the s lendor of the village and get in closer touch with the local community. his will enable local eo le to rovide everything re uired by guests during their stay at the village. hey are starting from uni ue tradition, beauty of nature, challenging adventure to delicious and country style culinary. f course, these would enrich their ersonal e erience as one of the objectives of traveling.

Last but not least, government should also ma the great

otential retained by each region and make a olicy in such a way that each region is included in

articular tour ackage. Basically each region has uni ue and attractive otentials like

arts, livelihood, tools, tourist destinations, customs and other treasures. Besides, government can lead new investment to less develo ed regions and establish inter regency coo eration in distributing job o ortunities. In reality, there are some regencies undergoing ra id growth in handicraft industry and informal sector enter rises, while others have abundant unem loyment. Local labor force should be given

riority to fill in the o ortunities as they are su orters of local culture and res onsible for its conservation.

Bali has a great otential of ristine destination. his should

be managed and reserved accordingly for its sustainability. When this can be achieved, eo

le will have more job o ortunities without leaving agriculture or other revious job. Conversely, tourists will have a wide choice of destination and attraction to visit. o efully, such develoment could be su orted by all com onents of community, so the ‘social envy could be gradually diminished without moving the ‘e isting infrastructure but discovering each local otential and how to get a share of the o

ortunities. (B N unia)

SE U outh Korea s resident has warned growth in Asia’s fourth-largest economy may slow in the second half of the year amid Europe’s ongoing debt crisis.

President Lee Myung-bak said at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday that lower exports could directly hit em loyment.

Lee said the government must be thoroughly re ared as the current economic situation would

not be easy to deal with.He said the government’s earlier forecast that the

local economy would ick u toward the end of the year may not hold.

Lee’s remarks come after the country’s exports dropped for a third straight month in May amid weaker demand from Euro e.

With Greece, Ireland and Portugal all under international bailout programs, financial markets are anxious about the risks from a seething Spanish banking crisis and a June 1 Greek election that may lead to Athens leaving the euro zone.

“Markets remain ske tical that the measures taken thus far are sufficient to secure the recovery in Euro e and remove the risk that the crisis will dee en. o we obviously believe that more ste s need to be taken,” White ouse ress secretary Jay Carney told re orters.

Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said ministers and central bankers of the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, Germany, France and Italy would hold a special conference call, raising pressure on the Euro eans to act.

“The real concern right now is Europe of course the weakness in some of the banks in Euro e, the fact they re underca italized, the fact the other Euro ean countries in the euro zone have not taken sufficient action yet to address those issues of underca italization of banks and building an adequate firewall,” Flaherty

told re orters. The disclosure of the normally confi

dential teleconference came as Euro ean Union paymaster Germany said it was u to ain, the latest euro zone country in the markets’ firing line, to decide if it needed financial assistance, after media reports that Berlin was pressing Madrid to re uest aid.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and leaders of her centre-right coalition said in a statement “All the instruments are available to guarantee the safety of banks in the euro zone.”

hey effectively ruled out anish calls to allow euro zone rescue funds to lend money directly to reca italize anish banks, which are weighed down with bad property debts, without the government having to take a bailout program.

Berlin is pressing reluctant euro zone partners, including close ally France, to agree to give up more fiscal sovereignty as part of a closer European fiscal union.

A G7 source, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said there were concerns about the

risk of a bank run in Spain, which is struggling to recapitalize nationalized lender Bankia and smaller banks stricken by the colla se of a ro erty bubble.

“ here is concern on whether there will be a bank run in ain that could have re ercussions beyond the euro zone,” the source told euters.

The United States, which holds the G7 chair, has long pressed Europe to deal more forcefully with its crisis. President Barack Obama, seeking re-election in November, has ointed to Euro e s crisis as a problem for the weakening U.S. economic recovery.

“European leaders appear to be moving with a heightened sense of urgency,” a U.S. Treasury Department official said.

“We’re hoping to see accelerated European action over the next several weeks, including in the run-up to the Leaders’ G20 meeting in Mexico,” the official said, referring to a summit of the Group of 20 leading economies in Mexico on June 18-19.

“Movement to strengthen the European banking system will be of particular imortance in this time eriod.”

NEW YORK — Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen took home the biggest prize at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America awards. The former child TV stars were selected Monday night as the country’s top womenswear designers for their col-lection called The Row.

“I’d like to thank you — you,” Mary-Kate, wearing an all-black ensemble, said, turning to her purple-clad twin, as she accepted. Jessica Chastain, who wore a sparkly white dress by Prabal Gurung, announced the 25-year-olds as winners at Lin-coln Center in front of an audience that drew not only from the fashion world but also from Hollywood.

“Mad Men’s” Jessica Pare gave Reed Krakoff his trophy as best designer of accessories, and “White Collar’s” Matt Bomer gave menswear designer Billy Reid his. The previously announced style icon award went to Johnny Depp, but he was on the set of “The Lone Ranger” and didn’t attend. He sent an email — and filmmaker friend John Waters — in his place.

Standing in front of a collage of Depp’s outfits over the years, Waters said, “This man can’t look ugly no matter how hard he tries.”

Waters also accepted the interna-tional award on behalf of Tokyo-based Rei Kawakubo, who won honors as an international designer for her often cre-ative, balloonlike silhouettes created for the label Comme des Garcons. Waters said he was a fan of her clothes — and she also was a personal friend.

However, he joked, some people might describe her clothes as “di-saster at the dry-cleaner,” rattling off the slew of warnings often found on washing labels.

Ceremony host Seth Meyers, who started the night in a suit by Band of Out-siders, took on many targets, from John Galliano to Marc Jacobs. After making fun of Jacobs’ sheer lace “dress” worn over boxer shorts to last month’s fashion gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the industry’s other important red carpet event, Meyers proceeded to put on the get-up later in the show.

Using what he called fashion terminology, Meyers described the outfit as “breezy.” And, no matter, he joked, if all the designers and models

in the auditorium didn’t like his act. “Fashion people like hating things more than they do liking things.”

In presenting Tommy Hilfiger with his lifetime achievement award, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour said the designer could be pretty funny, espe-cially in his imitations of famous people such as Karl Lagerfeld, Donna Karan and even Mick Jagger. “As long as you’re not imitating me, we’re all good,” the famously serious Wintour said.

CFDA president Diane von Furst-enberg gave a shoutout to all the designers who have been members of the organization, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. “I’m the mother of all American designers. I can’t pick a favorite child.”

In the preview, it looks as though Bane, a steroidal criminal with an iffy Caribbean accent, is even able to infiltrate the Bat cave. Will he snap Batman’s back like a twig, much as he does in the comic books?

Like the Joker, Bane seems de-termined to create anarchic chaos in the city Batman has sworn to protect - bringing violence to its streets, its financial institutions and even its picturesque bridges (the real life versions of which can be seen in Pittsburgh).

Sony unveiled plans for a sec-ond-screen function for the Vita that keeps it in step with Nintendo’s new tablet-controller-equipped console, Wii U. It also presented a Harry Potter-inspired book game called “Wonderbook Book of Spells” that turns the Move motion controller into a magic wand.

Jack Tretton, the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertain-ment America, suggested it may be a few more years before a new PlayStation console is due. He told a packed Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena that Sony’s 6-year-old machine “continues to shatter expectations” and called it “the industry’s most powerful palate”

for game-makers.“Back to the original PlayStation

we always thought in 10-year product life cycles,” he said in an interview with The Associated Press after Sony’s E3 news conference. “I think you’re seeing those generations be longer and longer because the technology is so great, it’s difficult to surpass it.” A few games did appear to defy expectations even on the aging console.

“Beyond,” which Sony show-cased to kick off its 75-minute presentation, depicts “Juno” star Ellen Page in much more authen-tic animated acting scenes than were seen in its 2010 predecessor, “Heavy Rain,” which was also from game studio uantic Dream.

A NEW striking image of a 6 -year-old truck driver shows just how much damage the sun can do.

This photograph, published in the New England Journal of Medi-cine, shows what dermatologists call dermatoheliosis — sun dam-

age, a common sign of aging. What makes it striking is that this man, a retired truck driver, shows the dam-age on only one side of the face.

“He was a truck driver for the majority of his life and never wore sunscreen,” said Northwestern Uni-

versity dermatologist Jen-nifer Gordon, who reported the man’s case. “We think the sun exposure just on this side of the face is what caused the damage.”

Ultraviolet A (UVA) light from the sun can easily pen-etrate window glass and even light clothing, Gordon told LiveScience. UVA rays cause damage deep in the skin, affecting connective tissues such as collagen and elastin.

“That’s where you get that aging effect the wrin-kles, the deposits of material in the skin,” Gordon said.

The patient in the photo-graph came to Gordon and her colleagues after he got tired of his grandchildren asking him what was wrong with one side of his face. So far, the man has not exhib-ited any signs of skin can-cer, Gordon said, though he’ll need to be monitored carefully in the future.

TH S article provides expert answers to challeng-ing questions. A rough estimate based on geologic records indicates there’s a 1-in-10,000 chance of a “supereruption” at Yellowstone during our lifetimes. However, given the erratic nature of volcanoes, that number doesn’t mean much. The bulging pocket of magma swishing around beneath Old Faithful might never blow its lid again. Or, it might put on a surprise fireworks show next Independence Day. Scientists just don’t know.

But if or when it blows, what will actually happen? Will it be the end of us all, or just a big knock to the tourism industry in Wyoming?

Each of the three past supereruptions of the Yellowstone hotspot spewed more than 1,000 cubic kilometers of magma into the environ-ment — the benchmark of a “supervolcano.” According to Jacob Lowenstern, scientist-in-charge at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, that’s a large enough eruption to cover much of North America in an ash blanket of varying thickness.

“The ash is thick (more than about 30 centimeters of ash) near the eruption source and a small fraction of a millimeter once you move 2,000 miles away. It’s fair to say that a trace of ash would be found over most of the United States, though it would only be thick enough to collapse roofs in the states closest to Yellowstone,” Lowenstern told Life’s Little Mysteries.

With enough warning, the states near Yellow-stone could be evacuated, which would largely avoid a tremendous loss of life caused by the downpour of ash, the scientists said. But that’s

just in the short term the aftermath would be the rub. For several days, ash would hang in the air, making it difficult to breathe. And that blanket of ash covering the country would smother vegetation and pollute the water supply, quickly leading to a nationwide food crisis. “A lot of people would perish,” said Stephen Self, director of the Volcano Dynamics Group at the Open University in the U.K. He envisions American refugees lining up at the Mexican border

At international level, his 14 goals in 42 games have led the Poles, the lowest ranked side in this year’s finals, on a six-game unbeaten run since a 2-0 loss to Italy late last year. Lewandowski and Dortmund team mate Jakub Blaszczykowski also scored the goals that took the Poles within a whisker of beating Germany in a 2-2 draw last September.

“It is very important to us that we have a player like Robert in the side,” team spokesman Tomasz Rzasa told a news conference ahead of the Euro 2012 opener against Greece in Warsaw on Friday. “But we have to underline that there are 11 players in a team. This side will stand or fall by how well it defends together and works together.”

Lewandowski, still just 23, is

painfully aware of the host nation’s expectations ahead of the tourna-ment, the first to be held behind the old “Iron Curtain” that once divided Europe. “Advancing from the group is the minimum target, but I hope we will be capable of more than that,” he told Reuters earlier this year. Poland, the largest ex-communist European Union mem-ber since 2004, hopes a successful organisation of the tournament will bring some international rec-ognition and promote its economic success abroad.

The country’s soccer fans have had little to celebrate since Poland finished third at the 1982 World Cup finals, but are hopeful of pro-gressing from a first round group including Greece, Russia and the Czech Republic. “The group is so

balanced that any team may win over the other, which only makes it more interesting. Nuances will decide on who goes further,” Le-wandowski said.

“It’s a rare thing to play a cham-pionship tournament in one’s own country. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any player really. “And speaking from a wider per-spective, Poland will benefit from it as a country. Many stadiums and roads have been built, other invest-ments go on. Numerous football fans will come to see this is a coun-try worth visiting.”

Lewandowski, who is valued at about 15 million euros ($18.74 mil-lion), signed a new four-year con-tract at Dortmund in 2010, but he also said he hopes to try his luck in England or Spain at some stage.

WARSAW - oland striker Ro ert e ando ski s undesliga goals drove orussia Dort und to their second straight league title last season and the Euro co-hosts are in-ning their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals firmly on him. Muscular and strong in the air, Lewandowski was the third top scorer in the German top flight, also bagging a hat-trick in a 5-2 drubbing of Bayern Munich in the German Cup final.

And des ite dro ing his serve in the o ening game, he held steady to ull off a 4, ( ), 3 , 3 , 4 win that saw him into the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for the first time.

“It was tough yesterday as it was dark at the end. I don t know if was great for me or not,” songa said.

The Italian therefore spent much of his time working with Tech 3 on a new spec engine and its corresponding elec-tronics. Dovizioso ended the day with the fastest time, a 1m41. 7s, while team-mate Cal Crutchlow bounced back from a high-speed crash in the morning to go seventh fastest.

“Happy for today’s work, tried new electronic and is better for the control when the grip goes down and for life of tyre, but no change on speed,” Doviz-ioso said on Twitter. “I like Yamaha more and more...”

Yamaha’s Ben Spies, whose schedule included evaluating different engine specifications and frame variations, end-ed the day second fastest. The American had been running well in Sunday’s race, only to fall while trying to pass Honda’s Dani Pedrosa for the lead.

His Yamaha stable-mate Jorge Loren-zo, winner of the grand prix, finished the day in eighth. Honda spent much of the day evaluating Bridgestone’s new front tyre, which will be made available as part of each team’s pre-weekend alloca-

tion after Silverstone.Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa had

been first and second when the test halted for lunch, but dropped in the afternoon - Pedrosa ending one place above Stoner in fifth.

Hector Barbera, on the satellite Pra-mac Ducati, was third fastest ahead of Gresini Honda’s Alvaro Bautista, who worked on new suspension settings.

The works Ducati squad mean-while used the test to further trial its aluminium swingarm. Valentino Rossi had started his weekend in Catalunya using the aluminium version following a recent test at Mugello, but switched back to the carbon fibre version half-way through the weekend.

“We tried the aluminium swingarm, which could help us in terms of grip on acceleration,” Rossi explained. “But it triggers too much chatter, as opposed to during the Mugello test, where it proved to be advantageous. It will be interesting to try it again at Aragon on Wednesday.” The Italian ended the day 11th fastest, just behind team-mate Nicky Hayden.

ERNANDO Alonso believes this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix could reveal whether Ferrari will be competitive enough to sustain its world championship challenge for the rest of the 2012 Formula 1 season.

Alonso currently holds a three-point lead over Red Bull drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in the stand-

ings despite Ferrari having started the season a long way off the pace following a troubled winter build-up. The Spaniard won the wet Malaysian GP, and also took podium finishes in Spain and Monaco.

Ferrari has admitted that traction and top speed were among its early weak points, and as both are essential

for Montreal pace, Alonso thinks this weekend will reveal whether the F2012 has improved sufficiently.

“I think we have improved the car in these areas since the beginning of the season and Canada will be a good test in this respect,” he said.

“Hopefully this weekend we will see a competitive Ferrari and that will be very important for us, not just for this race but also for the rest of the season.”

Alonso said his current expectation was that Ferrari would be encouraged by its Montreal form.

“It’s hard to say in advance, as this season has been so unpredictable with ups and downs for everyone over the course of six races,” he said. “However, I don’t see any reason why Ferrari should not be competitive in Canada, fighting for the top places come the end of the race.”

The double world champion added that he was not letting his current points lead deceive him, as he still believes Fer-rari has ground to make up on-track.

“Leading the championship is only the beginning, it’s a starting point, because the ultimate target is leading the cham-pionship after the final race in Brazil in November,” said Alonso.
