Page 13Page 8Its director, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, is a Cannes

Film Festival darling, having won the Jury Prize in 2011 for the acclaimed “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.”

His film explores the silent life of the easy-going Aydin, played majestically by Haluk Bilginer, who runs a hotel with his wife and sister in a snowy village the rocky Turkish hills. But all is not what meets the eye — especially when a young boy throws a stone at a car, nearly killing its passengers.

The relationships between the rich Ayudin and the two women slowly unravel to expose tensions over how he runs his life, presiding like a benevolent lord over the vil-lage in which he owns property and takes rent from his poor and troubled tenants.

His sister, plagued by boredom (the “sleep”) in the quiet village, accuses him of self-importance in the column he writes for the local newspaper. His wife accuses him of selfishness and is considering divorce. But the film, shown through the perspective of Ayudin himself, doesn’t really show how Ayudin, a rather kind character, is at fault. The relative virtues and vices of all the characters remain ambiguous — an intentional point.

“It was kind of ambiguous feeling

I want to leave behind,” Ceylan said in an inter-view with The Associated Press. “(Ayudin) has done nothing wrong. Problems between people don’t arise because we do wrong. But because we need problems, a certain amount unhappi-ness in life. We create them,” he added.

When the boy inexplicably throws a rock smashing Ayudin’s car window, the backstory emerges: his father, a tenant who hasn’t paid rent, has been roughed up by one of Ayudin’s bailiffs. Ayudin doesn’t accept responsibility, since he lets his assistant and lawyer deal with his estate so he doesn’t have to deal with the consequences.

LOS ANGELES — A ruling in actor Jason Patric’s custody battle could have repercussions for an unexpected popula-tion — women who use fertility treatments. Legal experts say an appellate court ruling issued Wednesday in favor of Patric’s fight to regain visitation with his son could lead to changes in cases like his, in which a man donates sperm to a woman he knows and then maintains a relationship with the child. And Patric’s legal victory doesn’t just impact heterosexual couples; experts say it could also affect same-sex couples who have friends or acquaintances serve as sperm donors.

Wednesday’s decision doesn’t complete-ly resolve Patric’s fight to reunite with Gus, the 4-year-old boy he fathered through in vitro fertilization with Danielle Schreiber, an ex-girlfriend who no longer wants the actor in their lives. The “Lost Boys” actor must still prove to a Los Angeles judge that he qualifies as a father through his actions. But experts say the Patric case will have a lasting impact on certain paternity cases.

In California, sperm donors outside of marriage are assumed to have no parental rights or child support obligations. Prob-

lems arise when a man donates sperm to a woman he knows and then, as in Patric’s case, begins to establish a paternal relation-ship with the child.

In Patric’s case, a family law judge deter-mined his role as a sperm donor who wasn’t listed on his son’s birth certificate precluded him from having an ongoing parenting role. But the appellate justices unanimously ruled that decision was flawed.

“I don’t think the (Patric) case was groundbreaking,” said Melissa Murray, a Berkeley Law professor who specializes in family law issues. “I do think it will be an important decision for filling in a vacuum in the law. It will be important for those individuals who are in families but they are not families who have been joined in marriage.”

Murray, who is affiliated with Berkeley Law’s Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice, said she expects the Patric ruling will prompt an appeal to the California Supreme Court, and will likely lead to legislative changes. Until then, she and other legal experts think the ruling should prompt women receiving sperm donations from men they know to think twice about whether they maintain a relationship with the man. Doing so could lead to him being

designated later by a court to be a parent. In the wake of the ruling, “You have to

have a clear understanding from the min-ute the child’s born about what you want to do,” said Los Angeles divorce attorney Steve Mindel.

“Once you start the relationship, the court is going to allow the relationship to blossom,” Mindel said, predicting based on comments by a judge handling Patric’s case that he will likely be allowed to eventually reunite with his son. Women who are mar-ried or receiving anonymous sperm dona-tions would not be affected by the ruling.

Powerful Turkish film “Winter Sleep” wows CannesAssociated Press

CANNES, France — “Winter Sleep,” the bookies’ early front-runner for the Palme d’Or, the slow-burning but powerful Turkish family drama, is unafraid to tackle Sartrian questions of personal responsibility — and the hate that lurks beneath a seemingly peaceful family.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

drug dealers seem to intensely smug-gle drug into Bali. Two days after re-vealing the trafficking of crystal meth (SS) weighing 715 grams through the Renon Customs Office, Denpasar, Wednesday (May 14), the customs officer of Ngurah Rai Airport foiled another drug smuggling belonging to the type of crystal meth weighing 2.5 kg, Friday (May 16).

At this time, a grandfather, Arsain bin Anwar, 84, was arrested while carrying crystal meth from Malaysia. After undergoing examination at the Customs and Excise, the suspect was handed over to the Bali Police Drugs

Directorate to undergo further devel-opment process.

The Head of Customs and Excise Office of the Ngurah Rai Airport, Made Wijaya, said on Saturday (May 17) the arrest of the drug trafficker started from Arsain landing by Mal-indo Air with flight number OD306 with the route of Kuala Lumpur-Denpasar. At that time, the officers conducting the X-ray examination suspected the backpack and luggage carried by Arsain. “Arsain bin Anwar was arrested on Friday afternoon around 1:30 p.m.,” he said.

The grandfather coming alone from Malaysia was then taken to a special room. When opening the backpack

owned by the 87-year old grandfather, the officers found two large crystal clear packages in the bag cavity. “Having tested with narcotic test, the clear crystal was known as crystal meth (SS). After being weighed, it was totally 2,522 grams or worth IDR 5 billion,” he said.

When interrogated, the grandfather who had been working as a car wash-ing attendant for 27 years in Malaysia admitted that when going home from Malaysia he was entrusted a bag by his colleague with initial S equally from Sampang, Madura. “Arsain admitted that he was asked to carry a bag containing a prayer mat to one of the mosques in Sampang, Madura,

in exchange for MYR 200. Yet he claimed not to know if the bag con-tained crystal meth,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the plane, one of the syndicates was alleged to oversee Arsain with his luggage having initial R. Even, when landing at the Ngurah Rai Airport on Friday afternoon around 1:30 p.m., R first underwent the examination while continuing to oversee Arsain.

When the customs officer of the Ngurah Rai Airport arrested Arsain, R being in charge of overseeing the trafficking crystal meth immediately contacted to the entire syndicates. “So, we cannot reveal its syndicate in Indonesia so that we decided to

directly hand over the case to Bali Police for further investigation,” he concluded.

In the meantime, when met Arsain claimed that he was just commended a bag by S, a neighbor from the same village in Sampang, Madura. He did not think if the bag contained illicit goods like crystal meth. “I was just given money as much as MYR 200 to carry the bag to a mosque in Sam-pang. Later, someone will take the bag,” he said.

To take responsibility for his deed, Arsain would be charged under Article 113, paragraph 2 of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics with the threat of death penalty. (nik)

It was announced by Chairman of the Community Self-Reliance Communication Forum of Klung-kung County, AA Gede Cakra, Thursday (May 15). He considered that Klungkung had not owned a grand design or major design in addressing poverty.

He said that one of the poverty handling solutions from central government (Ministry of Public Works) was through the National Program for Community Em-powerment (PNPM), specifically the poverty handling through the Community Self-reliance Agency (BKM). The program promoting the empowerment of poor house-holds (RTM) seemed to overlap with similar program made by lo-cal government. Even, it was also similar with the political agenda of each political party in the legislature with its cadres, especially before the recent legislative election.

He pointed out that in the house refurbishment program Cakra said

the BKM existing at each village had a poor community develop-ment project with a budget worth IDR 90 million per year. Each head of family was also helped with pro-vision of equity as much as 30 per-cent of the total assistance required. “It is empowering. Moreover, there is also a sense of belonging so that after being given a help, their home will be treated, not even abandoned. Equity can be in the form of fund, materials or labor. It aims at raising the responsibility of the residents,” he said. Another empowerment was also packaged in the form of savings and loans for venture capital. Thus, the effective BKM would help many poor people at village level.

However, a similar poverty alle-viation program was also provided by local government each year, not to mention a similar program through a social assistance grant facilitated by legislators. Unfortu-nately, sometimes it was given to

Poverty handling messy, amount tends to riseBali Post

SEMArAPUrA - The handling of poverty problem is never well directed. The more programs, they are increas-ingly ineffective to simply reduce the number of poor families. Even, the implementation of programs overlaps, so it causes the handling at the lower officials increasingly chaotic. As a result, the number of poor families tends to increase.

the same poor households. As a result, the intention to give empowerment even resulted in jealousy in society. Additionally, the poverty rate did not diminish but increased, following the emergence of new poor families in every region. Cakra said that addressing poverty should be integrated between the provision of the assistance and em-powerment at once.

Therefore, his party asked for syn-ergy between the program launched by central government and the program

made by province and county. On that account, the community self-reliance communication forum was expected to give solution to the issue because the entire BKM at every village was in the same forum. Thus, Cakra hoped there would be a kind of development plan meeting every year devoted to discuss about the synergy of the program, so as not to overlap in the execution in the field.

During the period of 2011-2013, the poor household in Klungkung reached

11,445 and it increased from 7,988 in the period of 2008-2010. County government claimed the number in-creased because the variable of poverty category increased from 14 variables to 52 variables where the target of the RTM was extended. Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) recently confirmed to allocate the budget of IDR 4 billion to reduce poverty, including the house refurbishment program for a total of 200 units in all subdistricts. Several dozen motorcyclists gath-ered Saturday in the dusty, adobe encircled plaza in the community of Ranchos de Taos, four miles (6.4 kilo-meters) south of Taos, to kick off what town officials hope will be an annual event — Dennis Hopper Day — with a rally and ride through some of the places made famous in the 1969 film that co-starred Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson.

Motorcyclists pulled out of the plaza just before 1 p.m. MDT. Led by a police escort, they started their easy ride on the two-lane road heading out of Taos, a diverse town known for skiing, art and Hispanic and Native American culture. Not unlike scenes in the movie, snow-capped mountains served as a classic backdrop for much of the ride.

Saturday would have been the late actor and director’s 78th birthday. Hopper lived in Taos for years and is buried here. Town Manager Rick Bel-lis says the day is aimed at recognizing Hopper’s contributions as a resident, filmmaker, supporter of the arts and for simply being a “colorful member” of the community.

“His image really represents the spirit of Taos,” Bellis said. “He was independent, slightly eccentric but in-credibly talented. He sort of became a symbol for a whole new generation.”

Hopper first came to New Mexico in the late 1960s to scout locations for “Easy Rider.” Shot on a shoestring budget, the independent film mmed up the hopes and anxieties of the ‘60s, romanticized the open road and ended up revolutionizing Hollywood by forcing the studio gates to open to a new generation of film school graduates.

“Nothing like this had ever been done before. It was a phenomenon,” said John Hellmann, an English pro-fessor and a member of the film stud-ies program at Ohio State University. The appeal of rebellion, motorcycles and the open road have sustained the popularity of “Easy Rider” over four decades, and town officials are hopeful the film and the legend of Hopper will continue to draw people to Taos.

This marks the first year of the rally and ride, but organizers have plans to add more music and film venues in the coming years. Bellis said Hopper was able to get some of the area’s tradi-tional Hispanic and Native American families to open up to outsiders when he first arrived in the ‘60s. In fact, he was the only person to get permission to film at Taos Pueblo, an American Indian community dating to the late 13th and early 14th centuries that’s recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

MEXICO CITY — Pet owners, breeders and veterinarians in Mex-ico’s capital are howling over a law passed by the city council requiring sterilization, chip implants and reg-istration of all cats and dogs.

Veterinarian and breeder groups published full-page newspaper ads Thursday saying the law could en-danger thousands of jobs at clinics, pet salons and breeding and training facilities by causing a sharp drop in pet numbers. The Mexican Dog Fanciers Federation said the law was rushed through in early May without adequate consultation.

The city of nearly 9 million people has a serious problem with strays, puppy mills, animal mistreat-ment and illegal pet sales.

Over a few weeks in late 2012 and

early 2013, at least five people were killed by what investigators said was a pack of dogs running loose in a park on Mexico City’s east side.

But usually, dogs suffer more than humans from the lack of con-trols. Animal pounds and rescue shelters are inadequate, and many dogs lucky enough to have a home are confined to narrow balconies or small rooftops for much of the day.

The law, which is not yet formally enacted, would require owners to register pets, implant identification chips, use collars with ID tags, and provide animals with adequate food, water and space.

Trainers could not work with pets in public. Pets would have to be leashed in public, while children under 14 wouldn’t be allowed to walk pets alone.

Special permits will be needed to own “potentially dangerous” dogs, including pit bulls, mastiffs and Rottweilers. Those dogs would have to be muzzled and leashed in public.

The most controversial aspect is a requirement that all pets must be sterilized.

Legal breeders say that violates owners’ rights to breed animals responsibly. Worse, they say, the law could force legitimate facilities out of business, leaving puppy and kitten breeding in the hands of un-scrupulous dealers who sell animals out of car trunks or from crates at street markets.

“The decision to sterilize pets should be voluntary,” said Juan Luis Martinez, administrative director of the Mexican Dog Fanciers Federa-tion.

“The economic growth was fueled by the trade, hotel and res-taurant sectors, the agricultural sector and the construction sector,” head of the Bali provincial government’s public relations bureau I Ketut Teneng said.

He said the economic growth was also driven by private invest-ment amounting to Rp6.18 trillion, or 71.5 percent of the target of Rp8.65 trillion for the first quarter.

Domestic and foreign investment in the January-March 2014 quarter touched Rp2 trillion, accounting for 66.7 percent of the target of Rp3 trillion, he said.

The Bali provincial government has set the total investment target of Rp18.90 trillion for this year. Nearly Rp8.24 trillion of the target was realized in the first quarter.

The investment is expected to come from the private and the government sectors, including the central, provincial, district and municipal governments, he said.

He said the investment of district and municipal governments in Bali is expected to reach Rp4.87 trillion this year. Nearly Rp49.76 billion or 1 percent of the target has been realized in the first quarter.

The investment of the provincial government is projected to reach Rp436.86 billion this year. However, only Rp296.4 million, or 0.07 percent of the target, has been realized in the first quarter, he said.

The central government’s investment in the first quarter reached Rp32.09 billion, or 1.70 percent of the target of Rp1.93 trillion for this year, he said.

NUSA DUA - Indonesia is predicted to grow to be-come the world’s largest producer of processed cacao in 2015 with annual production of 600,000 tons.

“Indonesia will overtake Ghana and the Ivory Coast,” Deputy Industry Minister Alex SW Retraubun said, speaking at an international cacao conference.

The Ivory Coast and Ghana are currently the world’s largest and second largest producers of cacao with In-donesia the third.

Alex said the country’s target for ground cacao pro-duction capacity in 2015, is much larger than in 2010 when the production was only 150,000 tons.

“This means in five years, the cacao grinding capacity of Indonesia increased 300 percent,” he said.

In 2013, the country’s production of ground cacao was around 500,000 tons.

Alex said Indonesia’s cacao industry has expanded on support from the government such as with the imposition of export tax on cacao beans starting in 2010.

“This indicates that the slapping of export tax on cacao beans has been effective and successful in boosting cacao processing industry in Indonesia,” he said.

This policy has prompted multinational food and beverage companies to expand business, he said.

He said the target set for 2015 is very much within reach because of good synergy between government institutions.

Currently cacao has become a major plantation com-modity in Indonesia beside palm oil and rubber, he added.

In 2013, cacao contributed US$1.1 billion to the country’s foreign exchange income.

China also said that it would suspend some of its bilateral ex-change plans with Vietnam and that it was advising Chinese not to visit the country. China’s decision to deploy the massive oil rig on May 1 has been widely seen as it one of its most provocative steps in a campaign to assert its sovereignty in the waters. It triggered fury in Vietnam and the worst breakdown in ties between Hanoi and Beijing in years.

Tensions have been mounting between the two countries despite their sharing of a political ideology. Both nations are run by communist regimes that since the 1990s have embraced free market capitalism while retaining large state sectors and powerful internal security systems.

Last weekend, Vietnam permit-ted anti-China protests that drew thousands of people, a rare step that allowed it to amplify state anger against Beijing. Doing so was risky

for authorities: Dissident groups joined the pro-tests, and by Tuesday and Wednesday, the ral-lies had morphed into riots targeting factories believed to be owned by Chinese companies, though many of those hit were Taiwanese. Two Chinese nationals were killed and more than 100 wounded.

Vietnam’s state-secu-rity apparatus on Sunday ensured no one was able to protest, with thou-sands of police and se-curity officers flooding southern Ho Chi Minh City and the capital, Ha-noi. Police were posted outside well-known dissidents’ houses, preventing them from leav-ing, according to activists.

In Ho Chi Minh City, police de-tained several demonstrators after

dragging them from a park close to the city’s cathedral. Authorities in Hanoi closed off streets and a park close to the Chinese Embassy, while police barking into bullhorns shoved journalists and protesters

away.“I want to send a message that

if we don’t stop China today, to-morrow it will be too late,” said demonstrator Dao Minh Chu, as he was pushed away from the park near

China’s embassy, where last week around 500 people gathered without interference from authorities. Those protests were covered enthusiasti-cally by state media, a clear sign of state sanction.

MANDALAY, Myanmar — Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Sunday challenged the powerful army to help amend the constitution that is barring her from running for president in next year’s general elections. The Nobel laureate said that that the army is duty-bound to safeguard the country and should not be involved in running the administration.

Her comments during a rally in the second largest city of Mandalay drew loud cheers. Myanmar started moving from a half century of dictatorship to democracy three years ago, but the army still lurks heavily in the shadows. The 2008 constitution drawn by the former military rulers gives the army 25 percent of all parliamentary seats, allows it to appoint three cabinet ministers and have veto power in changing the constitution.

Suu Kyi spent much of the last 20 years under house arrest, but she has been cozy-

ing up to the military since she was elected to parliament in 2012, in hopes of winning favors so the constitution could be changed before the 2015 polls.

An article in the constitution says anyone whose spouse or children owes allegiance to a foreign power cannot become president or vice president. Suu Kyi’s sons are British nationals.

Several other provisions are also under scrutiny for revision, and some proposed changes would strengthen self-government in regions of the country dominated by ethnic minorities.

HANOI, Vietnam — Vietnam smothered anti-China protests on Sunday with a massive security clampdown after deadly riots triggered by a territorial dispute with Beijing spooked foreign investors and the country’s authoritarian leadership alike. As patrol ships from both countries remained locked in a standoff close to a Chinese oil rig in a disputed patch of the South China Sea, Beijing said it had evacuated 3,000 nationals from Vietnam and was sending the first of five ships to pull out others wanting to leave.

THree-day ter-teran at Sare-nTer-teran or flame war had been held every night for three days be-fore ngusaba dalem since Tuesday (Apr 29) to Thursday (May 1) at Saren customary village, Budakel-ing village, Karangasem. Priest of Batur Saren, Jero Mangku Susena, revealed at Saren on Wednesday (Apr 30) the meaning and purpose of the ter-teran activity was burn-ing the bad qualities or Sad Ripu within the human self. Six enemies or bad qualities within the self were burned by cultivating virtues in order to adore the deities of local temple on the fourth day of ngusaba dalem. Ngusaba dalem this year fell on Friday (May 2). The ter-teran at Saren village, said Mangku Susena, was routinely held every two years starting on the new moon in the tenth month of Balinese calendar (sasih kedasa) or around April. “Bad qualities like greedy, jealousy and envy are not possible to be purified with water. In our belief at Saren, the purification is burning them by sacred fire,” he said.

In a series of the ngusaba dalem, the residents had held initiation started with negtegan since 16 days previously, Wednesday (Apr 16). Negtegang meant controlling the senses, so as to achieve goodness and harmony ahead of the ngusaba dalem. At that time, the residents were not allowed to overnight outside the village. Besides, they also implemented the ngempet ron-busung or abstaining from the use any coconut and palm leaves as well as ngempet merah-rah or abstaining from the use of any bloods. It should not be dripping blood, including the prohibition from holding cockfight and slaugh-tering chicken.

“For those who violate, it is believed to get misfortune or bad luck. Meanwhile, the oblation of those who are in cuntaka or tempo-rarily impure condition (in mourn-ing, menstruation and childbirth period) and religiously mistaken (kesisipan) will fall before getting to temple, on the road or before putting on the oblation on the plat-form,” said Mangku Susena.

Later on, the first day of the ter-teran was started with mamuhu-muhu worship at Segeha shrine. After praying, the flame war was begun. The war started from boy devotional workers. It was then resumed with adult men devotional workers. People from outside the village, said Mangku Susena, were also allowed to join while paying devotional works. In addition, many neighboring villagers also came to watch only.

A resident living near the tourist informa-tion board said on Friday (May 5) the informa-tion board was built at roadside a few years ago. It was usually used to put the announce-ments on tourist activities at Lovina. Besides, the board was also often taken advantage as a means of promotion by hotel and restaurant management.

Surprisingly, such very important facil-ity was heavily damaged and almost never repaired by technical agencies in Buleleng County. The beams of the building began to tilt and almost collapsed. The roof collapsed and its board ragged after being adhered to brochures and posters. No wonder such condi-tion was often complained by visiting travelers. They disappointed with the shabby tourist in-formation board because it was neglected. “It’s been long not been repaired whereas travelers often complained about the condition of the information board,” he said.

Other than the tourist information board, the signpost of Kalibukbuk village name right at the entrance to Lovina Beach attraction was also in apprehensive condition as had been left broken since last year. The signpost was made of concrete and had long collapsed. No one knew the cause of the collapse. Chunks of the concrete were abandoned to strew over the sidewalk. Again, this condition also disrupted the beauty of Lovina known as an international village.

Residents who saw the condition were dis-appointed because the government seemed to deliberately neglect the damage to the support-ing facilities at Lovina tourist attraction. They hoped the technical agency in charge to pay attention to that condition and could provide relief fund to repair the damage.

The Head of Buleleng Culture and Tour-ism Agency, Ketut Warkadea, when contacted said that the information board at Lovina was posted by the Indonesia Hotels and Restau-

rant Association (PHRI) of Buleleng. It was unknown why the information board was not taken care of and left in badly damaged condi-tion. Since it was installed by the PHRI, the Culture and Tourism Agency had not made any repair whereas its condition was not worth see-ing and should have been repaired. “We did not put up, but I think it was installed by the PHRI of Buleleng. It should be repaired. Otherwise, it’s better to be dismantled and should not be let be in such a condition,” he said.

According to Warkadea, the Buleleng Cul-ture and Tourism Agency would immediately coordinate with the management ranks of the PHRI Buleleng to find a way out in handling the Lovina tourist facilities including the tourist information board. As planned, the Culture and Tourism Agency and PHRI Buleleng would repair and re-arrange the tourist supporting fa-cilities at Lovina and the surrounding regions. In addition, the agency also made arrangement the office building to support the activities of the Information Service Officer (TIS) assigned at Lovina. All this time, the information of-ficers occupied a less comfortable building. “It includes the office for the TIS officers we assign. It is no longer comfortable. We’ll repair it so it will support their performance either in giving information to domestic or foreign travelers,” he said. (kmb38)

Travelers complain about damaged tourist information board Bali Post

SINGArAJA - Maintenance of tourist supporting facilities in Lovina seems not to be maximized by local government. As proof, the information board installed on Singaraja-Seririt roadside, precisely at Kalibukbuk village, Lovina, looks in apprehensive condition. Its beams have tilted and nearly collapsed. Then, its roof tile starts to leak and some parts have started to collapse because the wooden frame is not strong enough to support. Not surprisingly, the condition is often complained by travelers visiting Lovina.

The togetherness impression looked so solid in the siat sampian dance procession. In the ngam-piog session performed by some 56 people, they looked to mutually hold the fabric and dance while surrounding the temple area for 18 times. It was started with surround-ing for six times of meprasewia, together with temple priests for three times, ngober for three times, meguak-guakan for three times and ngombak for three times ac-companied by the parekan group. Furthermore, it was resumed with the siat sampian procession by parekan group totally amounting to 420 people.

The permas group put on black cloth, white belt, white kebaya and white scarf while their hair bun was folded. Meanwhile, the parekan group put on white clothes, white sarong and white shirt. “All the dance movements in a series of the siat sampian procession showed off togetherness,” said Gusti Mangku Ageng of Samuantiga Temple.

He said the siat sampian (a war using ritual oblation made of young coconut leaf) was a sacred dance inherited from generation to genera-tion at the temple every implemen-tation of piodalan at Samuantiga Temple. The dance presented had a relatively simple movement, so

it made them easy to do and was imitated by almost all the partici-pants. The use of sampian, in this case, symbolized the form chakra weapon. “Although there are a lot of people and mutually throwing,

none has been seen anger among them,” he said.

After completion of the siat sampian, the procession was them resumed with self-purification at local spring. Furthermore, it was

resumed again with a war by us-ing the same weapon. After that, it was followed with mepada and mepura daksina conducted by two groups, namely the group of Penataran Sasih and Samuantiga

Temple, symbolizing the purusha (male aspect) and pradhana (female aspect). Ultimately, the procession was concluded with the farewell and escort of the inviting deities to each village. (kmb16)

LONDON - The 1,000 richest people in Britain have enjoyed a “phenomenal” increase of 15 percent in their wealth in the past year, according to the annual Rich List compiled by the Sunday Times newspaper.

Together they are worth £518.975 b i l l i o n ( 6 3 7 . 3 8 7 b i l l i o n e u r o s ,

$872.838 billion), an increase of 15.4 percent on last year’s total of £449.654 billion.

Even accounting for inflation, this is well above the £412.846 billion recorded before the 2008 financial crisis.

“I’ve never seen such a phenomenal rise in personal wealth,” said Philip Be-resford, who has compiled the list since 1989.

He added: “While some may criticise them, many of these people are at the heart of the economy and their success brings more jobs and more wealth for the country.”

The Bank of England said this week that the British economy was heading “back towards normal” following the recession, and after six years of falling wages, average pay has finally caught up

with inflation. However, the 1.7 percent annual growth

in average weekly wages recorded by the Office for National Statistics is well below the growth enjoyed by the richest in society.

The rich list, which is published in full on Sunday, is based on identifiable wealth including land, property and shares, but excludes bank accounts.

Budgetary discipline and aus-terity policies remain the mantra for the country which has seen severe pay, pension and job cuts in the three years under IMF and EU supervision.

Government spokesman Luis Marques Guedes said: “The time for euphoria has yet to come. We must maintain rigour to avoid falling back into the errors of the past.”

Hit full force three years ago by the debt crisis that had already forced Greece and then Ireland to seek international aid, Portugal suddenly found itself unable to afford the soaring borrowing costs it was being charged by financial markets.

On the brink of financial collapse, the eurozone country grabbed a financial lifeline in the form of a 78-billion-euro ($107 billion) loan. The string attached was its agreement to enact unprecedented austerity measures, including slashing public sector salaries and pen-sions while raising taxes by 30 percent.

“Portugal has managed to overcome one of the worst crises of its recent history, but there re-mains much to be done. Budget-ary discipline will be one of our daily responsibilities,” said Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho.

The economy remains fragile, contracting a 0.7 percent in the

first quarter, sending alarm bells ringing.

While public deficit has been halved to 4.9 percent since the bailout began, Portugal’s overall debt continues to balloon, reach-ing 129 percent of output from 94 percent.

Sending a signal of its deter-mination to press on with auster-ity, the Portuguese government issued a document called “the road to growth” on Saturday which outlines further plans to cut public spending.

Coelho’s government won praise from its creditors for having doggedly followed the austerity receipt, facing down massive protests.

It has also opted to exit the bailout programme without re-questing the financial safety net of a precautionary line of credit, like Ireland -- the first eurozone country to exit its rescue pro-gramme.

DENPASAR - The environmen-tal issues have become very crucial in Bali because the environment is widely sacrificed in order to support tourism as an economic backbone of the island.

An environmentalist, Luh Kar-tini, said when the tourism facility was developed excessively, the taksu (spiritual vibration) of Bali would gradually disappear. “Now, to address environmental problems Bali should apply a moratorium,

so it should stop building tourism facilities. Precisely, the develop-ment must be focused on agricul-ture to address the environmental problems in order to still be able to conserve natural resources,” she said.

Kartini added that tourism should follow the agriculture becoming the base and spirit of Bali. Moreover, Bali had become a favorite interna-tional tourist destination because of such a taksu.

“Abandoning the spirit and con-stantly bringing in investors into

the tourism industry, especially by creating a new island, will be very dangerous for the future of Bali. If the agriculture vanishes, the taksu will vanish as well,” she explained.

She explained the agriculture in Bali could have taksu because various rituals were held during the process. But today, Bali was more dependent on the agricul-tural products from outside the island.

“If in the past we consume sarwa prani (flora and fauna), it has been

well maintained. Now, everything is brought in from outside Bali, water resources disappear, so the source of Bali’s beauty will result in the loss of tourism. It must be well recognized, so it’s now the time to develop the agriculture,” she explained.

Kartini also said that she did not agree with the government’s plan to build an airport in Buleleng. According to her, local figures had showed their success in agriculture, especially the planting of dragon fruit. Supposedly, the government

further developed the agricultural potential.

“The government should fix the existing problems. Now, it must develop the agriculture, keep water and the environment. These are the direction where to actually bring the energy,” she said.

She added that Bali was very different from other regions so that the development had to be carefully considered. Local knowledge was the key to maintain and preserve the taksu or spiritual vibration of Bali. (kmb32)

However there were no reports of damage and a tsunami warning was not issued.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit at a depth of nine kilometres (six miles), just over 300 kilometres west of the coastal city Banda Aceh.

It occurred at around 7:00 am (0100 GMT), USGS said.

“The quake was felt strongly for a few seconds by residents on the west coast,” said national disaster

agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. “Some people ran out of their homes.”

But he added there had been no reports of damage.

Mochammad Riyadi, from the Indonesian meteorology, climatol-ogy and geophysics agency, also said there were no reports of casualties or damages.

“The magnitude may be big but the epicentre is at sea and relatively

far away from the nearest city, Banda Aceh,” he told AFP.

Banda Aceh was devastated by a huge tsunami in 2004, which killed some 170,000 people in the surround-ing region, as well as tens of thousands more in countries around the Indian Ocean.

JAKARTA - Only a few dozen In-donesians queued up Friday to lay their hands on BlackBerry’s new budget handset, in a lukewarm welcome that highlighted the smartphone maker’s fading fortunes.

JAKARTA - Cigarette maker PT HM Sampoerna plans to stop production at i ts hand-made clove cigarette plants in Jem-ber and Lumajang, East Java, on May 31 and lay off 4,900 workers there.

The chief of the manpower office in Jember, Ahmad Hari-yadi, said on Saturday the com-pany had met the procedures with regard to the closure and mass lay-offs.

“The reason is that the owner has gone bankrupt because his product has no buyers,” he said when asked by telephone for his confirmation of the issue.

He said to deal with the situ-ation his office will conduct a job fair on June 4-5 to allow the laid-off workers to f ind new jobs.

The chairman of the Com-mission D of the district’s leg-islative assembly, Ayub Juanidi, meanwhile, has expressed con-cern over the closure of the plants because it will not only affect workers, but also the economy of the areas around the plants.

He called on the local admin-istration to closely monitor the fulfillment of the rights of the workers in connection with the mass lay-off so that no one is neglected.

an upmarket shopping mall in west Jakarta.

It was a stark contrast to the huge crowds that flocked to previous launch events for BlackBerrys in Indonesia, underlining how the smartphone maker’s popularity has declined even in a country regarded as one of its last strongholds.

Nevertheless there were still some die-hard fans at the event who were excited to get their hands on the new touchscreen phone, whose full name is “Z3, Jakarta Edition”.

“I have high hopes for the Z3 with all its new features -- the big screen, camera and (latest operating system),” said Nisma Mediyanti, 32.

“Hopefully it is as good, or even better than, the iPhone.”

BlackBerry hopes thousands of devices will be sold at the event over the next three days, where the phone is being offered with a 400,000 rupiah ($35) discount from its original price of 2,199,000 rupiah. For many in In-donesia though, BlackBerry is already a thing of the past.

“I prefer a phone that functions like a mini computer, and I don’t see that with BlackBerry,” said 28-year-old Charlie Tanara, who was shopping at the mall but had no plans to check out the new BlackBerry.

“I am using a Samsung and I like them because they have a large selec-tion of applications, many of which are free.”

Chief executive John Chen un-veiled the phone -- BlackBerry’s first since he took the helm of the company and the first from its partnership with tech giant Foxconn -- with great fanfare at a press launch in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Indonesia is the testbed for the new Z3, after which BlackBerry plans to roll it out in other Asian countries, in-cluding Vietnam and the Philippines.

Ahead of the launch, retailers pointed to healthy online pre-orders, which began on April 28.

Benghazi, birthplace of the 2011 uprising that toppled Libya’s late dictator Moammar Gadhafi, was quiet on Sunday, but its airport remained closed for the second successive day.

Libya’s weak central govern-ment describes the offensive, which began Friday by Gen. Khalifa Hifter, and included air support, as tantamount to a coup. The violence there showed how precarious government control remains three years after the 2011 civil war that toppled Gadhafi.

Libya’s military banned flights

Saturday over Benghazi and said in a statement that it would tar-get any military aircraft flying over the city, where the uprising against Gadhafi began.

In a statement late Saturday, Libya’s interim prime minister, parliament speaker and the head of military warned Hifter against further pursuing his offensive and threatened the troops cooperating with him.

In a joint statement read by par-liament speaker Nouri Abu Sah-mein they accused Hifter of using the rise in violence in Benghazi

to “pursue personal gains or turn against the state legitimacy.” They also said Hifter is wanted by the country’s military prosecutor.

Hifter, however, vowed to press on with his campaign in Benghazi to restore security, charging that the current interim Cabinet has no mandate. In comments to the press aired on television, Hifter said: “Today is the start of a national battle. It is not a coup, it is not a quest for authority.” He added: “All Libyan blood is sacred but the terrorism and its servants wanted a battle.”

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean officials offered a rare public apology for the collapse of an apartment building under construction in Pyongyang, which a South Korean official said was believed to have caused considerable casualties that could mean hundreds might have died. The word of the collapse in the secretive nation’s capital was reported Sunday morning by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency, which gave no death toll but said that the accident was “serious” and upset North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un.

The report said it occurred in the capital’s Phyongchon district on Tues-day “as the construction of an apartment house was not done properly and officials supervised and controlled it in an irresponsible manner.” In Seoul, a South Korean government official speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information said the 23-story apartment building that collapsed was presumed to have housed 92 families.

That could mean the casualties could be in the hundreds because a typical North Korean family has four members. However, it was not clear that all the residents were inside at the time of the collapse, or that four people lived in each apartment. It is not unusual for people to start living in apartments before the construction is complete.

The official said he did not have any figure for the actual death toll. According to the KCNA report, the rescue operation ended Saturday and of-ficials apologized to bereaved families and district residents. On the streets of Pyongyang on Sunday, residents expressed outrage over the incident.

“This accident happened because they broke the rules and methods of construction,” resident Pak Chol told The Associated Press. “After this ac-cident, we must make sure that this kind of terrible accident never happens again, by sticking to the proper method of building.”

Another resident, Hong Nam Hyok, said that “everyone in Pyongyang is now sharing the sorrow of the victims and the bereaved families.” The KCNA report cited one official as saying Kim Jong Un “sat up all night, feeling painful after being told about the accident.”

“I wanted to give the public here a gift,” the four-division champion said afterward while a pro-Marquez crowd roared its approval. “A gift that dignifies the history of this event and the history of the Forum. I wanted to make this fight a gift for the fans.” Marquez staggered Alvarado right before the final bell, punctuating another for the 40-year-old four-division champion.

The win sets up Marquez for a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao later this year in Macau, if Marquez wants it. His knockout victory over Pacquiao in December 2012 was the crowning moment of his career, but the money might compel him to add a fifth chapter to their rivalry. “We’ll relax first,” Marquez said. “I don’t know at the moment, but any

decision we make will be good for me, good for my family and good for the Mexican fans.”

Alvarado (34-3) never got roll-ing in his second straight defeat, struggling to land any major shots beyond the right that sent Marquez to the canvas. “It was a bad experi-ence being in there with a legend,” Alvarado said. “I was warming up a little bit too much before I started getting off. It was on me, but it was a great fight.”

Marquez, who made $1.4 mil-lion, showcased the roots of his success against Alvarado, whose apparent fear of Marquez’s famed counterpunching left him waiting for Marquez to clobber him.

Marquez outlanded Alvarado in 11 rounds, connecting with 44 percent of his 627 punches. His

power shots were even more dev-astating, landing 57 percent to just 34 percent for Alvarado. Marquez was in charge from the opening rounds. With Alvarado sitting back and waiting, Marquez pounded him to the body and pulped the left side of his face, opening a cut under his eye in the middle rounds. “That’s the kind of fighter I am. I like wars,” Alvarado said. “That’s how he exploited me, but that’s how I fight.”

Marquez knocked down Alva-rado with a counter right hand in the final seconds of the eighth, sending Alvarado sliding under the ropes and nearly off the canvas into the photographers.

Alvarado recovered after the bell, and he knocked down Marquez with a double right hand early in the ninth, stunning the crowd. But the shot only seemed to enrage Mar-quez, who landed big combinations for the rest of the round.

The Oklahoma City Thunder were dealt a severe blow ahead of their Western Conference finals against the San Antonio Spurs with the news that forward Serge Ibaka is likely to miss the rest of the playoffs due to a calf injury. Ibaka had a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan on his left calf on Friday and is “expected to miss the remainder of the 2014 postseason,” the Thunder said in a statement.

The 24-year-old suffered the injury during the third quarter of Thursday’s 104-98 series-clinching win over the Los Ange-les Clippers. “We are obviously disappointed for Serge, as he is a tremendous competitor, and we know how badly he wants to be on the court with his teammates,” said Thunder General Manager Sam Presti.

Ibaka, who is known for his shot-blocking skills, has been av-eraging 12.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.23 blocks per game during the playoffs. He led the National Basketball Association in total blocks during the regular season for a fourth consecutive year after recording 219 blocked shots.

“At this point it is important that our team directs its con-centration and energy towards preparation and execution for our upcoming series,” said Presti. “As with all teams, our group has con-fronted different challenges. It is our collective experience that we will call on to ensure that we play to our capabilities.”

The second-seeded Thunder, beaten in five games by the Miami Heat in the 2012 NBA Finals, will take on the top-seeded Spurs in the best-of-seven Western Conference finals, starting on Monday in San Antonio.

“This was a very difficult year for me, my first in Germany. So four titles is good,” he said after their 2-0 Cup win over Dortmund. Guardiola quickly led Bayern to the UEFA Super Cup and the club World Cup title when he took over before racing to the quickest ever Bundesliga title with seven games to spare.

“When a team wins the league title then it is already a good season,” Guardiola told reporters. “But we are happy to have achieved this season. The German Cup was a big title.”

The Bavarians broke record after record under Guardiola before their air of invincibility and their unbeat-en streak in the league, that stretched for over a year and a half, burst after securing the league title.

They lost several Bundesliga games including a 3-0 home demoli-tion by Dortmund and were elimi-nated from the Champions League by Real Madrid in the seminfinals with a 5-0 aggregate loss that in-cluded a stunning 4-0 home defeat.

BARCELONA, Spain — Atlet-ico Madrid dramatically secured its first Spanish league title in 18 years by rallying for a 1-1 draw at Barcelona on Saturday. Atletico lost Diego Costa and Arda Turan to injury inside 22 minutes, and Bar-celona seized control at the Camp Nou in the 34th minute when Alexis Sanchez drove an unstoppable shot into the near corner.

Despite the setback, Atletico emerged from the break determined to get back in the match. David Villa hit the post, then Diego Godin fiercely headed home Koke’s corner in the 49th.

Atletico needed to avoid defeat to secure the title, and it weathered Barcelona’s pressure in a frantic fin-ish to cap an improbable domestic success. Atletico’s 10th title meant a club besides Barcelona or Real Madrid was Spanish champion for the first time since Valencia in 2004.

“Today we could make history,”

Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. “Not at any moment did I feel that the game was getting away from my team. I know them. I knew they could respond, and the bigger the challenge, the better.”

Even the 90,000-strong Camp Nou crowd appreciated the feat as it rained cheers of “Atleti” on the players as they celebrated a title triumph that looked uncertain after it lost two of its best attack-ing players. Atletico finished the 38-game season with 90 points. Barcelona finished second on 87, the same tally as Real Madrid after it closed the season with a 3-1 win over Espanyol.

“We fought all season long, hanging on against difficult teams, and against Real Madrid and Bar-celona,” Godin said. “We felt the pressure, a lot of things were go-ing against us. But the coach told us just to be confident, and believe in ourselves, and the goal would come.”

It was only the third time the championship was decided by two

challengers on the final day, and the first time since 1951. Atletico did it the first time in 1946. Atletico contained Lionel Messi for the sixth time this season as the Argentina forward had a second-half goal ruled offside to keep him off the scoresheet.

Not since Espanyol in 1939-40 has a club gone unbeaten in six games in a season against Barce-lona. Five of those matches were draws and Atletico’s lone victory knocked the Catalan side out of the Champions League. As expected, coach Gerardo Martino said he was stepping down after Barce-lona finished the season without a major trophy for the first time since 2008.

“We tried it until the end with dignity and we met an opponent that was better than we were,” Martino said. “I want to congratulate the great rival Atletico has been during the entire season.” Real Madrid will be Atletico’s next challenge as the city rivals face off in the Champions League final next Saturday.

AMSTERDAM — Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal was full of praise for captain Robin van Persie after his breathtaking volley secured a 1-1 draw with Ecuador in a friendly on Saturday. Just don’t ask him if he will be working with the Manchester United star striker next season.

Van Gaal has been widely tipped as the successor to David Moyes at Old Trafford, but was staying tight-lipped about a possible move after the World Cup. “I cannot say anything about that,” he said after the stalemate with Ecuador at Amsterdam Arena.

But he lavished praise on Van Persie. “He plays very well,” Van Gaal said. “Now he is coming from a bad injury and he scores a fantastic goal — unbelievable — and he was pressing, so I was happy with him, but he is also a good captain.”

But it seems the 62-year-old former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach and the United star are almost soul mates.

“Always, you make a player captain when you have ... more or less the same philosophy, not only about football tactics but also about life,” he said. “So I think that’s very important. I believe that Van Persie and Van Gaal (have) the same philosophy.”

Van Gaal has for days refused to answer questions about his possible future in Manchester, telling journalists they need to ask the club, not him. When a Dutch reporter tried another tack — asking him how his next couple of days were looking, he got a frosty response. “I can fill them in how I want,” he said. “I don’t ask you how your next days look, and I don’t want to know either.”

PARIS - Lille finished third in Ligue 1 and snatched the remaining Champions League qualification spot after Salomon Kalou scored twice in a 4-1 win at Lorient in the final round of matches on Saturday. Kalou scored either side of the inter-val, with Nolan Roux and a Gregory Bourillon own goal completing the scoring, as Lille came back from behind to win after Jeremie Aliadiere’s opener.

The result put Lille, who will play in the third qualifying round of Europe’s elite club competi-tion, on 71 points, two ahead of St Etienne, who won 3-1 at home to

AC Ajaccio.Les Verts, fourth in the standings,

qualified for the Europa League competition, along with arch rivals Olympique Lyon, who beat Nice 1-0 away. Paris St Germain, who had already been crowned cham-pions, celebrated a second consecu-tive title with a 4-0 home victory against Montpellier, with top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic netting his 26th goal of the league season.

Uruguay striker Edinson Ca-vani did not play after suffering an unspecified injury during the warm-up. Second-placed Monaco drew 1-1 at home against Girondns Bordeaux to end the season nine points off the pace.

Olympique Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda, France’s number two behind Hugo Lloris, was car-ried off on a stretcher in his team’s 1-0 win over En Avant Guingamp after a collision with Mustapha Yatabare.

Mandanda briefly lost con-sciousness and was taken to the hospital for checks, the club said. Sochaux were relegated after fin-ishing 18th following a 3-0 home defeat to Evian Thonon Gaillard, who would have been relegated instead had they lost.

AC Ajaccio and Valenciennes were already down before kick off, while Metz, RC Lens and Caen secured promotion from Ligue 2.

Antonio Di Natale scored a hat trick to help Udinese draw 3-3 against Sampdoria in its last Serie A match on Saturday, then announced he was going back on his de-cision to retire this year. The 36-year-old said a few months ago he would hang up his boots at the end of the season, but has since changed his mind.

“It’s a pity the season is ending now, as I am in good physical shape and enjoying myself,” Di Natale said. “Let’s hope I continue like this. “At the start of the sea-son, the whole team struggled to do what we’d been able to in three years together. But you weigh things up at the end, and I still got 17 goals in the league.”

Stefano Okaka headed Sampdoria into an early lead, but Di Natale leveled with a magnificent free kick into the top near corner, and the former Italy striker side-footed in Roberto Pereyra’s cross in the 33rd after good work by his teammate.

The match changed in two second-half minutes. First Eder beat the offside trap to roll Okaka’s through ball past Udinese goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic, before Roberto Soriano gave Samp the lead from a tight angle.

Di Natale completed his hat trick in bizarre fashion two minutes from time af-ter Sampdoria substitute Pawel Wszolek sent a backpass from the halfway line straight to the Udinese forward for his 193rd Serie A goal.

Four titles not bad in ‘toughest’ first year - Guardiola

Reuters

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola took his season title tally to four when his team clinched the German Cup on Sat-urday with a win over Borussia Dortmund to silence critics and complete a domestic double in the Spaniard’s first season in charge. Former Barcelona coach Guardiola had a tough act to follow when he took over this season following Bayern’s treble-winning campaign under former coach Jupp Heynckes.

FLAWLESS CAMPAIGN

The 43-year-old, who took a year out after winning 14 out of 19 pos-sible titles in four seasons at Barca, quickly moved into the spotlight as their form nose-dived in March after a near flawless campaign in all competitions up to that point.

“It was justified criticism,” Guardiola admitted. “It was things I did that I should not have done. The criticism for the game against Real was also justified but it is part of the work I do.” He had been criticised for sticking to a possession game throughout the season that served them well until it yielded zero goals against Real over two legs.

He was also accused of writing off the league matches after win-ning it and taking motivation out of the players. This was further enhanced by his heavy rotation, with Bayern stalwarts, including Thomas Mueller, unhappy about their playing time.

A season-ending win for Bay-ern over Dortmund, however, quickly set the record straight again but Guardiola said more was to come in the next season.

“We have to keep working. There is much work left to do,” said the soft-spoken coach. “I still have not managed to form the team according to my vision.

It is after all my first year.” “My German is not that good yet and to succeed Jupp Heynckes after his success was a challenge but four titles are not bad.”

Alvarado’s face was swollen with damage under both eyes in the final rounds. Alvarado wobbled Marquez again in the 11th round, but Marquez kept his feet and fin-ished to a standing ovation.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates col-lide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

JAKARTA - Only a few dozen In-donesians queued up Friday to lay their hands on BlackBerry’s new budget handset, in a lukewarm welcome that highlighted the smartphone maker’s fading fortunes.

The Z3 -- launched in one of Blackberry’s last bastions-- is a key test of whether the ailing Canadian company can regain ground lost in emerging markets to Apple’s iPhone and devices using the Google Android operating system.

But only around 50 people queued up ahead of the phone going on sale in the main launch for customers at

BANDA ACEH - A 6.2-magnitude quake struck off the western Indonesian island of Sumatra Sunday, prompting panicked people to run out of their homes.

an upmarket shopping mall in west Jakarta.

(kmb32)

In 2013, cacao contributed US$1.1 billion to the country’s foreign exchange income.

drug dealers seem to intensely smug-gle drug into Bali.

“The most competent party to maintain the mangrove is the state, government. I think the concern has not been optimal because the budget allocated for the mainte-

nance is still relatively small. Our environmental problems have not been a priority,” said Chairman of the Center for Sustainable Develop-ment Studies, Udayana University,

Dr. KG Dharma Putra, recently.Actually, said Dharma Putra, the

state budget was important for the prevention of waste from going into the mangrove forest areas. All this time, there had been no integrated waste management system. As a result, the waste of household and trade areas like market easily flowed into the downstream region which ultimately polluted mangroves.

“Every day, a lot of waste enters the streams. Why does the waste of market enter the stream? It happens because the market itself has no

integrated waste treatment system that can cope with pollution caused by oil, waste of the market as well as foul odor generated by fish remnants usually disposed by traders. It was not solely the faults of traders, but every market in Bali especially in Denpasar should have a good sew-age treatment system so the water of the river here could be kept from the beginning and not accumulate in the downstream that finally attacks the mangrove areas,” he explained.

Dharma Putra added, at the same time, the industrial waste also

flowed into the downstream region. According to him, many industries had not owned a priority to environ-mental management. For example, they did not set up a waste treatment facility from the beginning.

“For example, let’s check fish canning industry and tourism in-dustry. Probably, they have it but the capacity is inadequate so that at certain moments, most of them come into the environment and eventually runs to the downstream like the mangroves,” he explained. (kmb32)

Bali facing environmental pollution Bali Post

DENPASAR - Environmental pollution is becoming a crucial issue faced by Bali today. It is particularly related to mangrove forests due to household waste, industrial waste to MFO waste due to the leakage of fuel pipe owned by PT Indonesia Power a few months ago. Actually, mangrove forest plays a major role in keeping the coastal areas as well as supplying greater oxygen than tropical forests.
