But she agreed to adapt James Franco’s book “Palo Alto” after her mother, Jacqui de la Fontaine, introduced the two. Coppola had recently graduated from Bard College in New York, where she studied photogra-phy. Franco was impressed with her eye. “There was this intense focus in a lot of the detail that added up to this dreamy feeling,” says Franco of Coppola’s photos. “I thought that would be good for this material.”

Franco became Coppola’s partner in the making of the film as well as her men-tor, helping her push beyond the fear of helming a feature. “He let me know that he trusted me . I didn’t feel judged in any way,” says Coppola, who shot short on-line videos for fashion companies before “Palo Alto.”

Nearly five years after her initial chat with Franco, the film is finally in theaters. “I thought we were making something so small,” says Coppola over coffee at a Holly-

wood cafe. “I thought we would just release it on the Internet.” But Tribeca Film had other ideas. In December of last year, the independent distribution company nabbed the North American rights to the film.

Starring Franco, Emma Roberts, Val Kilmer and his 18-year-old son, Jack Kilmer (making his acting debut), “Palo Alto” will expand to 15-20 screens this weekend.

Not a bad start for a low-budget film that initially struggled to gain financial backing. “No one wanted to invest in a first-time director with dark material and real teenag-ers,” says Coppola.

But she didn’t run to her film world relatives for cash. “It was important for me to do it on my own,” says Coppola, who gained behind-the-scenes experience work-ing on Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Twixt.” ‘’James and I wanted to keep it small and not have a second party involved.”

LOS ANGELES — It took a dark tale of teens and a pedophile in a Northern California suburb for Gia Coppola, the granddaughter of Francis and niece of Sofia, to also become a filmmaker. “Outsiders were always asking me if I was going into film,” says the soft-spoken 27-year-old writer-director, whose first movie, “Palo Alto,” debuted in New York and Los Angeles last weekend. “It deterred me. It felt intimidating to have that kind of attention.”

NEW YORK — The Oprah Winfrey Network says it plans to produce a documentary series following the life of Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team.

The series will take an up-close look at the man recently drafted by the St. Louis Rams in a groundbreak-ing moment in professional sports. Cameras will follow the former Uni-versity of Missouri football player as he works to earn a spot on the Rams while under a media microscope.

Sam says he hopes his story can lead others to accept who they are and go for their dreams. OWN did not specify a premiere date for the series or how many episodes it will be. North America’s top four pro sports leagues have never had an openly gay player.

In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Fairly wide potholes can be found everywhere. These conditions cause a lot of vehicles transporting goods to become reluctant to get into the terminal. However, they are forced to pay the entrance levy collected by the officers at the terminal entrance booth.

Field observation on Tuesday (May 13) indicated if the stevedoring ter-minal newly built by the Buleleng Transportation Agency was in severely damaged condition. The whole asphalt layers in the terminal area came off be-cause the load of vehicles entering the terminal was relatively heavy, so the asphalt and gravels easily came off. At a number of points, people could find deep puddles due to unstable soil.

The most severe condition was seen near the entrance ticket booth where the asphalt layer was virtually unseen. When vehicles came into the terminal, the dust disturbed the comfort of people living around the terminal. Even, the entrance ticket officers were forced to use a medical mask covering the mouth and nose so as not to disturb their health.

The damage of terminal did not just occur at this time. Previously, the gutter at the entrance of the terminal at the edge of Jalan Ahmad Yani, Singaraja, also collapsed. It happened because the loads of vehicles entering the terminal were quite heavy, so it was not strong enough to hold the load of vehicles. The damage was success-fully handled by the Transportation Agency, but after that, the damage apparently happened again in the area of the stevedoring terminal.

Such condition was not feasible as the facility of stevedoring terminal so the drivers were reluctant to utilize the facility. Each vehicles transporting the

goods and entering the city were forced to pay terminal levy collected by the officers at the terminal entrance. This condition also often disrupted the traffic flows on the crowded Singaraja-Seririt road sec-tion. Since the vehicles transporting goods had to stop when paying the levy, they consequently disrupted the other passing vehicles on the road. “When coming into the terminal, a number of potholes must be passed through. Being afraid of falling into the potholes, we pay the levy on the roadside. Besides, the officers also often picked up the levy at the roadside,” said a truck driver from Karangasem.

At separate location, the Head of Bule-leng Transportation Agency, I Made Arya Sukerta, when asked for his comment, admitted if the condition of stevedoring terminal owned by the government was severely damaged. He said that so far his

party had been conducting a study to design the terminal area in order to be able to with-stand even though being passed through by vehicles transporting goods. Results of the study indicated if the soil in the terminal area was unstable, so it was unable to hold when passed through by heavily loaded vehicles. For this condition, the Buleleng Transportation Agency planned to repair the damage in the terminal area by means of concrete construction. However, it would be applied specifically at the unstable soil.

Meanwhile, the area of solid land would still be paved. “We’ve done studies and found if the land in the terminal area was unstable at some points. This will be re-solved by concreting. The solid land will constantly be paved and the handling starts in 2015,” he explained.

On the other hand, Sukerta said that in terms of layout and design, the stevedoring

terminal needed relocating or redesigning, especially as having only single entrance. According to the rules of transportation, any terminal should have two doors, so it would not disturb the traffic of vehicles. However, since the difficulty of land and budget to change the design of the stevedor-ing terminal, the Buleleng Transportation Agency had not yet thought to relocate or remodel the current terminal.

“Indeed, it is the original design, while based on our studies the design must be changed or relocated to get a more repre-sentative one, mainly the one with two-way door. To realize it, we still find budget dif-ficulties, so for a while we just repair the damage and our budget will approximately reach IDR 800 million. Hopefully, the condition would be a bit more comfort-able than today’s condition,” he explained. (kmb38)

MANGUPURA - Most of the agricultural and SMEs products in Badung actually have pretty good quality. Unfortunately, the native products to Badung are not maximized to penetrate the markets, especially the tourism industry in order to meet the needs of hotels and restaurants in South Badung. So far, only a few products can succeed.

According to Putu Parwata, a legis-lator of Badung House, the agricultural products of Badung could not meet the market demand of tourism industry in Badung. It happened because a number of products still had inferior quality. Not only that, there was no assurance of continuity.

A similar problem was also ex-perienced by other products such as handicrafts and the SME products in Badung. So far, Parwata assessed the direction of the SME development in Badung was unclear so that only a small portion could be touched. “There are tens of thousands of SMEs in Badung. They still need to be ad-dressed seriously by the government,” he said.

A member of Commission C of the Badung House, Wayan Puspa Negara, revealed that some products of Badung actually had a good quality and had been in demand to penetrate the international market such as the asparagus and coffee of Petang. Nevertheless, there were a number of horticultural products which could not be absorbed in the tourism industry such as peppers, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes due to poor quality control.

“We have a foreigner supervi-sory team called the monitoring and enforcement (Wasdakim) consisting of six personnel to oversee the five counties and municipality. To maximize the performance, we have formed a foreigner supervisory team with relevant agencies, police, labor agency and tourism agency,” said Chief of Immigration Office of

Foreigners violated permit of stay worrying

Bali Post

DENPASAR - Immigration Office of First Class Denpasar is overwhelmed to oversee the presence of foreign citizens or travelers who violate permit of stay in Bali. It happens due to limited number of personnel owned, while the areas to be supervised is wide enough, namely the Gianyar, Bangli, Klungkung, Tabanan and Denpasar. The existence of foreign tourists working illegally becomes a phenomenon that happens almost all over the world.

First Class Denpasar, Bambang Wisnu Wardana.

He explained that aside from establishing a supervisory team, his party also asked the active role of community in monitoring the surrounding environment. Thus, the presence of foreigners on the Island of the Gods got maximal supervi-sion. “We also received a report from the public due to wide working

area of the Denpasar Office, but we still lack of personnel. Thus, it requires public participation in monitoring the issues,” he said.

During the period of 2013-2014, the Denpasar Immigration Office had deported 22 foreigners who violated the immigration rules. Dozens of those foreigners came from a number of countries with details that in 2013 amounted to 16

people and in early 2014 amounted to 6 people.

According to him, his party also intensively visited a number of institutions found to be employing foreign citizen such as the foreign language educational institutions to check their residence permit. “We proactively visit the educational institutions that employ foreign citizens because there are several other cases where the foreigners abuse their permit,” he said.

On that occasion, Bambang Wis-nu said the Denpasar Immigration Office provided facility for pass-port handling for the public with new system through the Integrated Passport Issuance System or One Stop Service. “Now, the applicants

are enough to submit files once, di-rectly line up, then taking interview, taking photograph, fingerprints and then going home. On the second day, the applicants can take their issued passport,” he said.

He mentioned the system short-ening the procedures of passport ap-plication could save time from four to three working days of standard service. The system had been in ef-fect since January 27, 2014. “When it was first applied, the officers got problems in terms of the applicant line. Yet after running up to these days, the services are provided at three tables and handled by totally six officers. So far, the passport ap-plication service has been running smoothly,” he said. A farmer working at tomatoes garden in Badung Regency. Most of the agricultural and SMEs products in Badung actually have pretty good quality. Unfortunately, the native products to Badung are not maximized to penetrate the markets, especially the tourism industry in order to meet the needs of hotels and restaurants in South Badung.

Likewise, the handicraft products still needed more attention. To that end, he hoped the government’s efforts to enhance the synergy between the gov-ernment and private sector to absorb the original products of Badung. In the future, he hoped through the synergy the government could facilitate private sectors to go directly to people looking for their business needs.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Co-operatives, Industry, Trade and SME Agency, Ketut Karpiana, said the ag-ricultural and handicraft products, es-pecially the SME products in Badung had good quality. They included coffee and asparagus of Plaga as well as the sculpture of Jagapati, Angantaka and Sedang (JAS). “The asparagus product of Badung is the best in Indonesia, even in Asia,” he said.

Karpiana explained that marketing of the product owned by Badung had entered the modern shops, coopera-tives and stalls. The premium quality products were especially marketed to hotels in Badung. However, it was acknowledged that the problem of product marketing of Badung was not maximized. One of the main obstacles was the packaging. “The products have good quality, but sometimes they have weakness in packaging. This is the obstacle in marketing,” he explained.

This obstacle caused the products of Badung remained unable to pene-trate the market of the tourism industry in South Badung. Similarly, the local farmers and the SMEs still found other technical problems in Badung.

To assist the marketing of the agricultural and the SME products,

the Badung government had made a special outlet in Kuta used to display the products to the local tourism indus-try. Unfortunately, the function of this outlet was still not maximized. Hence, the local government also planned to make a bigger display.

According to the plan, Badung government would make a packag-ing house located in the Badung Civic Center. Later on, the packag-

ing house would become a display of some samples of the SME prod-ucts and postharvest products in Badung equipped with catalogs and brochures. The packaging house targeted at the guests of Badung government.

When asked about when the plan could be realized, Karpiana revealed the detailed engineering design (DED) would be designed in the regional

budget amendment 2014. According to the plan, the physical construction would be done in 2015.

“For the time being, we only have a display of statue. This makes other SMEs feel jealous and ask their mar-keting to be facilitated. So later on, this packaging house will become the solution. The SMEs party itself has expressed their readiness to fill in the packaging house,” he said. (kmb25)

Kidman’s “Grace of Monaco” is bringing focus anew on Kelly’s styl-ish impact. The day the Hitchcock blonde married Monegasque Prince Rainier in April 1956, it forever sealed the links between Monaco, the French Riviera and glamour.

In the wedding ceremony, at-tended by Ava Gardner, Cary Grant and David Niven, Kelly walked the aisle in a hand-sewn ivory dress made up of 300 yards of antique Brussels rose-point lace sent by MGM studios and shook up the staid royal family.

The Hermes saddlebag she carried to hide her royal pregnancy bump

was named after her and today the “Kelly bag” still has one of the lon-gest waiting lists in the world and ensured that, in 1960, Princess Grace would become one of the only roy-als to enter the “International Best Dressed List.”

The “Grace Kelly Look” as Wom-en’s Wear Daily branded it in the 1950s — a fresh, natural glamour — has lived on to this today to influence the fashion world. And the power her legacy still wields to bring glamour to the French Riviera region will be revisited Wednesday as celebrities throng to the world premiere “Grace of Monaco.”

GENEVA — Christie’s says its spring auction has sold a world record of $154.2 million in jewelry including the largest flawless vivid blue diamond in the world. The auc-tion house says “The Winston Blue,” a pear-shaped 13.22-carat diamond, fetched $23.8 million, which also set a world auction record of $2 million per carat for a blue diamond.

It said Thursday that a 1912 Cartier

diamond brooch brought $17.5 mil-lion, which is 660 percent more than when it was first sold at Christie’s in Geneva in 1991, while a pear-shaped and D-color flawless 75.97-carat dia-mond sold for almost $14.5 million.

Christie’s haul Wednesday night topped the world record set just a night earlier in Geneva when Sotheby’s sold $141.5 million of jewelry including the 100.09-carat “Graff Vivid Yellow” diamond ring for $16.3 million.

Although 363 miners were res-cued, some 150 more have not been accounted for. No miner has been brought out alive since early Wednesday. Mourners at the funer-als said they spent their lives fearing something like this.

“The wives of the miners kiss their husbands in the morning. When they come back, even if they are five minutes late, everyone starts calling. You never know what is going to happen,” said Gulizar Donmez, 45, the daughter and wife of a miner and neighbor of one of the victims.

Erdogan, who is expected to soon announce his candidacy for presidential elections in August, was forced to take refuge at a su-permarket during his visit to the area Wednesday after angry crowds called him a murderer and thief and clashed with police. Turkish newspapers Cumhuriyet, Milliyet and others on Thursday printed photographs they said were of an Erdogan aide kicking a protester who was on the ground and being held by special forces police during the scuffles. The papers identified the aide as Yusuf Yerkel.

Erdogan had earlier downplayed

the disaster, calling mining accidents “ordinary things” that also occur in many other countries, after giving examples of 19th-century mine ac-cidents in Britain.

Erdogan has made no secret of his desire to become Turkey’s first popularly elected president. His party swept local elections in March despite a corruption scandal that forced him to dismiss four govern-ment ministers in December and later also implicated him and family members. Erdogan denies corrup-tion, calling the allegations part of a plot to bring his government down.

Protests broke out in Istanbul, Ankara and other cities over the deaths and poor safety conditions at mines around the country. Turk-Is, Turkey’s largest trade union confed-eration representing some 800,000 workers, joined a one-day strike by other unions to demand better condi-tions for workers.

Workers in the mining region of Zonguldak, obeying the strike, gathering in front of a pit but did not enter it. In Istanbul, a group chanted anti-government slogans and carried a large banner that read: “It’s not an accident, it’s murder.”

SEOUL, South Korea — Prosecutors indicted the captain of the sunken South Korean ferry and three crew members on ho-micide charges Thursday, alleging they were negligent and failed to protect more than 300 people missing or dead in the disaster. Less serious indictments were issued against the 11 other crew members responsible for navigating the vessel.

Capt. Lee Joon-seok and the other ho-micide defendants — a first mate, a second mate and the chief engineer — could face the death penalty if convicted, according to the Supreme Court, though no one has been executed in South Korea since 1997. The 11 others were indicted for alleged negligence and abandoning passengers in need when the ship sank on April 16, according to prosecutors.

The indictment was filed Thursday in Gwangju District Court and a trial date will be decided in a few days, according to a court official who requested anonymity due to department rules. The official said all 15 defendants are expected to be tried together. The 15 indicted crew members were among the first group of people rescued when the

Sewol began badly listing, and all were ar-rested last month.

Lee initially told passengers to stay in their cabins and took about half an hour to issue an evacuation order but it’s not known if his message was ever conveyed to passen-gers. In a video taken by the coast guard, he was seen escaping the ferry in his underwear to a rescue boat while many passengers were still in the sinking ship.

Lee told reporters after his arrest last month that he withheld the evacuation order because rescuers had yet to arrive and he feared for the passengers’ safety in the cold, swift water.

The head of the ferry’s owner, Chong-haejin Marine Co. Ltd, and four other com-pany employees have also been arrested. Authorities suspect improper stowage and overloading of cargo may have contributed to the disaster.

About one month after the sinking, 284 bodies have been retrieved and 20 others are listed as missing. Only 172 people, including 22 of the ship’s 29 crew mem-bers, survived. Most of the victims were students from a single high school near Seoul who were traveling to the southern tourist island of Jeju.

SOMA, Turkey — Rescue teams recovered eight more victims of Tur-key’s worst mining accident on Thursday, raising the death toll to 282 in a disaster that has thrown Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s presidential ambitions off stride. Bali PostNEGARA - The case of dog in-

fected by rabies emerged again in Jembrana. Residents of Pohsanten village reported a dog running amok and it was suspected of having rabies. The Jembrana Agriculture, Plantation and Livestock Agency already took the sample of the dog and it was declared positive to ra-bies. On Sunday (May 11), the of-ficers of the Livestock Agency also searched the entire hamlet territory of Pohsanten village and performed mass vaccination.

The mass vaccination was con-ducted at all villages in Jembrana. Since last April, the agency as-signed a team to perform mass dog vaccination. The search was started from Gilimanuk region and has reached the Jembrana area. As seen

on Monday (May 12) and Tuesday (May 13), the Livestock Agency officers assisted by some volunteers performed vaccination of dogs owned by residents at Dauhwaru village. Hundreds of those dogs were vaccinated by injection and blowpipe. The agency provided about 17,000 vaccines for the en-tire dog population in Jembrana. Moreover, a rabies case was found at Pohsanten village last week.

The Head of Agriculture, Planta-tion and Livestock Agency, I Ketut Wiratma, said on Tuesday (May 13) the result of examination to the dog at Pohsanten village was positive to rabies. So, the officers were im-mediately deployed to Pohsanten village to perform vaccination. Ac-cording to Wiratma, the checking on the history of the dogs indicated if

the dog came from outside the vil-lage and even outside the county. “The traffic of dog delivery is quite high, this makes us worry. Re-sponding to the case, we promptly assigned a team to come down and perform vaccination at the village (Pohsanten),” he affirmed. Actually, the vaccination schedule was not at the village, but since a case oc-curred at the village, the team was focused on the village.

The vaccine was provided at free of charge for dogs owned by residents. Since the beginning of last year, the cases of rabies dog still occurred in Jembrana. Even, it was raging and biting people as happened at Menega hamlet, Dauhwaru and Petapan Persidi, Pergung village, Mendoyo early February. (kmb26)

The Head of Buleleng Sanita-tion and Landscaping Agency, Nyoman Genep, said the waste problem is still requiring the sup-port of all parties, particularly the waste management of household level to temporary laystall (TPS). Through the trash bazaar activity, carried out in the residence court-

yard of the regent of Buleleng, the public awareness could be developed by degrees.

“The trash bazaar is the result of identification of the mentoring program by the regional working unit at each village. Later, it will be accumulated and the results will be delivered back to their

respective village,” he said.Genep explained the support

of private sectors through their CSR program was still open. By that way, they could jointly create a healthy environment and clean landscaping.

The Buleleng Sanitation and Landscaping Agency added its

garbage trucks. Initially, it had totally 21 units where 3 units of them could not be operated due to being out of order. The addition of 3 trucks had been done in the amended budget 2013 and 5 other units would be added through the regional budget 2014. “A total of 8 trucks have been added to support the performance in the field and accelerate the opera-tions of waste transportation in Buleleng,” he explained.

The Regent of Buleleng, Putu

Agus Suradnyana, asked in order the pre-management of waste might not stagnant. The entire regional working units (SKPD) had planned an assistance bud-get for the sanitation program at each village. “All proposals of residents must be accommodated. If it’s indeed required, it will be attempted in the budget amend-ment, so at the end of the year Buleleng County can arrange the landscaping and sanitation in Buleleng,” he said. (kmb34)

DENPASAR - The government through the tourism office asked the tourism players in Bali not to excessively worry about the threat of MERS-CoV virus spread by travelers, especially those from the Middle East. It has anticipated the entry of the MERS-CoV virus to Bali by monitoring the arrival of travelers from the Middle East spending their holiday to Bali. This includes the monitoring the transit flight to the Middle East.

“With the monitoring by the government, the threat of the MERS-CoV virus transmission must not much be worried about by tourism sector. The arrival of travelers from the Middle East in Denpasar is relatively normal. Even, there is no cancellation of tourist arrival in Denpasar due to the issue of the virus threat,” said the Head of the Denpasar Government Tourism Office, Putu Budiasa, in Denpasar.

According to him, there was no prominent reaction from travelers due to the threat of the MERS-CoV virus spread in the world. The government particularly the health agency needed to set up isolation room in each hospital to be used by travelers. “It means to anticipate the possibility if there are travelers declared as the suspect of MERS-CoV virus,” he said.

Nevertheless, the development of the MERS-CoV virus should be watched out because the handling of the virus threat needed to get awareness of all parties. However, the tourism players of Denpasar remained to have potential to work on the Middle East market. Middle East travelers had pretty good financial ability, so they had great potential to holiday in Bali.

Based on the record of the Bali Government Tourism Of-fice, the tourist arrival from Saudi Arabia was still relatively small. In January 2014, it amounted to 439 people, February (312 January-March 2014 reached 965 people. Meanwhile, tourist arrivals from Saudi Arabia in January 2013 reached 338 people, February (180) and March (226). Cumulative number of the Saudi Arabian travelers visiting Bali during the period of January-March of 2013 totally reached 744 people. Compared to the cumulative number of the Saudi Arabian tourists visit during the period of January-March 2013 to the same period in 2014, it showed an increase of 29.7 percent. (kmb27)

WASHINGTON - At Howard University’s gradu-ation ceremony, students got advice from a guest speaker unlike most given that honor: Sean Combs, or “P. Diddy”, a leading symbol of hip-hop artists turned businessmen.

Facing a sea of young people wearing blue gowns, the magnate of rap spoke Saturday of the secret of his success.

“I decided to embrace the entrepreneur spirit of my dad but in a honest way, in a legal way,” said Combs, whose father died in a drug deal gone wrong.

Sitting atop a personal fortune of 700 million dol-lars, “P. Diddy” is among a coterie of rapper business-men who have gone from inner city streets to the pages of the Wall Street Journal.

The king of West Coast rap, Dr. Dre, could soon become hip-hop’s first billionaire, if a proposed sale of his headphone and music streaming company Beats to Apple goes through.

“It’s a great landmark. After all, it’s a deal with, by some measures, the greatest company in the world,” said Dan Charnas, author of the book “The Big Pay-back. The History of the Business of Hip-Hop”.

“But that would also make sense in the context of the rise of the hip-hop entrepreneurs,” Charnas added, referring to the long years hip hop has spent knocking on the doors of US capitalism.

A deal reached nearly 30 years ago between the now legendary record label Def Jam and music giant Columbia paved the way.

But it did not immediately erase the wariness of the establishment toward this African-American urban culture.

It took until the mid 2000s to see the kings of hip-hop sign lucrative deals turning their personal brands into very big money.

“Why would the mainstream understand rock’n’roll so easily but then hip hop has to wait to have billion dollar deals” asked Steve Stoute, a former record label executive who founded the marketing company “Translation”.

In a sign of the changing times the magazine Forbes now publishes a wealth ranking specifically for the fortunes of hip-hop artists, which do not stem only from music.

The richest of all of them is P. Diddy, who founded his own record label, Bad Boy Records, but also established a line of clothing (Sean John), signed a partnership with the vodka brand Ciroc and launched a music channel, Revolt TV.

Following the success of his album “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” rapper 50 Cent made a bundle by investing in Vitaminwater, which was bought out by Coca-Cola in 2007 for 4.1 billion dollars.

The seasoned businessman Jay-Z has also built an empire, including a clothing line and a stake in an NBA basketball team.

But he says having an entrepreneurial spirit was more a necessity than a choice for hip-hop perform-ers.

As a big money heavy weight, the business of hip hop has set aside the angry social claims of pioneers like Public Enemy.

In late morning trade, the Tokyo-listed stock fell to 1,682 yen ($16.50), down 6.81 percent, on the back of Wednesday’s announcement, which aggravated con-cerns about a turnaround in Sony’s hard-hit consumer electronics division.

Sony announced just after markets closed on Wednesday that costs tied to its exit from the personal computer business -- part of a wider restructuring -- were largely to blame for its woeful bottom line.

Sony posted a full-year net loss of 128.37 billion yen and said it expected to lose 50 billion yen in the current fis-cal year to March 2015, despite seeing

losses narrow in its embattled television business.

The announcement came a day after Sony said it would not pay bonuses to senior executives for the third straight year.

Earlier this month, the company said it would lose more than the 110 billion yen shortfall it had forecast just three months ago, when it announced 5,000 job cuts in its struggling computer and television units.

Sony President Kazuo Hirai has led a sweeping restructuring, including liqui-dating assets that saw the $1.0 billion sale of the firm’s Manhattan headquarters, in a

bid to resuscitate the once world-beating company.

After suffering four years of losses, Sony crept back into the black in the previous fiscal year -- although that was mostly due to asset sales and a weak yen, which inflated repatriated profits from business overseas.

Last week, the firm said it would close its ebook Reader Store in Europe and Australia following a similar pullout in North America.

It is also selling properties at a pres-tigious Tokyo site where Sony had its headquarters for six decades.

Hirai has repeatedly shrugged off pleas to abandon the still-ailing television unit, which he insists remains central to Sony’s core business.

Japanese manufacturers have suffered badly in their TV divisions as razor-thin profit margins and fierce overseas compe-tition weigh on earnings.

NUSA PENIDA - Judicial team of Klungkung government per-formed an inspection to illegal migrants and the rampant illegal businesses in Nusa Penida subdis-trict, Monday night (May 12). As a result, the judicial team managed to capture dozens of illegal migrants. In addition, the team also encoun-tered an illegal diving company.

The inspection was led by Nyoman Kariasa, the executing task of the Operations Section of Klungkung Municipal Police (Satpol PP), accompanied by Nusa Penida Police Chief, Nusa Penida subdistrict secretary Nengah Seta and a number of Nusa Penida municipal police officers. Kariasa said on Tuesday (May 13) the in-spection was begun from Kampong Toyapakeh. At this kampong, the team ensnared 12 people who did not equip themselves with identity card or temporary resident permit (KIPS). The 12 residents consisted of Rahmi, 29, from Kediri (East Java), Zaebudin, 42, from Labuaji (NTB), Eka Suska, 28, from Sub-ang (West Java), Nuralin, 50, from Lamongan (East Java), Mizan, 35, from Cilacap (Central Java), Mochammad Syaifudin, 21, from Lamongan (East Java), Patim, 65, and Druki, 49, both from Jember

(East Java) and Napsin, 42, from West Lombok (NTB).

Being unsatisfied with the re-sults, the judicial team inspected the Batununggul village. At this location, the team also managed to ensnare illegal migrants. They were totally six people who did not have temporary resident permit. Among others, they were Fatimah, 31, from Batu (East Java), Indah Andarini, 24, from Prambanan (Central Java) and Nurul Ayu Farida, 25, from Central Java. The three were café girls in Nusa Penida. Meanwhile, the remain-ing consisted of Maman, 31, from Banyuwangi (East Java), Khorotai, 21, from Sido Mulyo (East Java) and Add Gulfur, from Sido Mulyo (East Java). If the girls worked at café, then the men worked as trader and laborer. Meanwhile, at Ped village, the judicial team also found two illegal migrants, namely Bayong, 24, and Stiva Alouw, 26, from Bandung (West Java).

Other than targeting illegal migrants, the judiciary team also inspected various businesses con-sidered illegal. Among others, there was a diving operator in the form of limited company (CV) at Bodong hamlet, Ped village. The marine tourism under the name Octopus Diving was known to have been established one year ago. The

operations staff, Stiva Alouw, when being inspected by the team said the diving business was a subsidiary of Tjimahi Hotel in Bandung owned by Eddy Soetamanggala. Stiva admitted to have never reported his presence and the business to the lo-cal hamlet authority since receiving the mandate since six months ago. “More severely, the permit owned in Bandung is in accommodation business, but its operations in Nusa Penida is even in diving business,” said Kariasa.

Kariasa asked the operator to report his presence to local village and subdistrict head office to submit the permission for diving company before operating. Moreover, the diving business recently got public highlight when seven Japanese travelers became the victims while diving at Nusa Penida. “We will report this finding to relevant agencies to be followed up in accordance with the applicable proce-dures and authorities,” he said.

Meanwhile, all the migrants had been reprimanded to report their presence to local village officials. His party asserted to perform a similar inspection to illegal migrants and businesses in the effort of law enforcement. His party also hoped that local people also participated in controlling over the migrants and their pres-ence. (kmb31)

DENPASAR - A New Zealand woman caught with drugs on the Indonesian resort island of Bali will be charged with hash pos-session and could face up to 12 years in jail, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

Leeza Ormsby, 37, was de-tained in February after police raided her villa in the tourist area of Kuta.

Officers found a half-smoked hash joint in her bag, as well as 27 grammes (almost one ounce) of hash and ecstasy pills weighing 132 grammes in a cupboard.

However, prosecutor Ni Luh Putu Oka Ariani said Ormsby would only be charged with possession and misuse of the small amount of hash found in her bag.

Prosecutors aim to formally charge her in court in June, she added.

“The penalty is a minimum of four years and maximum 12 years in jail,” Ariani said after interro-gating Ormsby for two hours.

She said that police had not in-cluded the other drugs in the evi-dence submitted to prosecutors, and they were part of a separate investigation.

Foreigners regularly get caught with illegal drugs in Indonesia, particularly on the hard-partying holiday island of Bali, and some are on death row.

British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death last year after being found with $2.4 million worth of cocaine in her luggage as she arrived in Bali.

The case of drug trafficker Schapelle Corby, who spent more than nine years behind bars for smuggling marijuana into Bali, received huge attention in her na-tive Australia. She was released on bail in February.

The countdown of the Vesak Day 2558 BE this year was con-ducted at 2.15 a.m. Indonesian Western Time and initiated with the Buddhists’ meditating in front of the main altar.

As the t ime of Vesak ap-proached, the countdown was marked with the ritual beating of drums and ringing of bells, after which each Buddhist council read their prayer successively.

During the countdown to Ve-

sak Day, the Buddhist monk Tadisa Paramita Mahasthaviira preached that the Buddha always teaches love, compassion, sym-pathy, and inner balance.

Monk Tadisa explained that the love of brotherhood and friendship will lead to kindness, as love is the willingness to make all happy and dispel hatred.

“The Buddha teaches universal love, hence we have to sound and spread love to all the corners to

neutralize human restlessness,” Tadisa remarked.

After praying in front of the main altar, the Buddhist monks held the “pradaksina” wherein they walked thrice around the Borobudur Temple in a clockwise manner.

The series of the Three-Sacred Vesak celebration and Vesak Day’s countdown at the Borobudur Tem-ple culminated with the release of a hundred lanterns into the sky.

AntaraTANGERANG - At least four

passengers are dead and several others injured when an intercity and interprovincial (AKAP) Putri Jaya bus plunged into the Cadas River in Tanggerang, West Java, on Thursday.

The passengers who were killed at the scene were rushed to the Tangerang General Hospital for autopsy along with the other injured passengers for medical treatment.

The bus was travell ing at high speed from Tangerang and trying to avoid a routine vehicle inspection by the police. In trying to evade the inspection, the bus veered off its course and crashed

into a motorcycle that was parked on the side of the road.

After crashing into the motor-cycle, the bus driver continued to ride the vehicle at high speed, after which the bus lost control and finally plunged into a river near the vehicle inspection area.

“Looks like the bus was try-ing to avoid the inspection,” an eyewitness claimed.

Currently, there is a traffic jam near the crash site as people are trying to get a first-hand glimpse of the accident.

According to data furnished by the police, the four dead pas-sengers are Tangerang Police officer Abdul Mutalib, Maryadi, Ilhamnudin, and Markamah.

The unrest is a major challenge for Vietnam’s authoritarian and secretive leadership, and is hurt-ing the country’s reputation as a safe investment destination. It risks inflaming an already tense and dangerous standoff between patrol ships from both countries in the South China Sea close to the rig, which Hanoi is demanding Beijing withdraw.

Companies from Taiwan, many of which employ Chinese nation-als, are bearing the brunt of the protests and violence, the most serious in years to hit the tightly controlled nation of 90 million people. In his first remarks on the crisis, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said peaceful protests over the last few days were “legitimate,” but that anyone involved in violence should be punished severely.

“This is serious,” he said in

a telegram to police across the country. Nervous Chinese expatri-ates were fleeing by land and air. Cambodian immigration police said 600 Chinese crossed into Cambodia over the land border in southern Vietnam on Wednes-day, and that others were arriving Thursday. Taiwan’s China Airlines was adding two additional charter flights from southern Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China was “greatly shocked and concerned.” “We urge the Viet-namese government to earnestly assume responsibility, get to the bottom of the incident, punish the perpetrators harshly, and pay com-pensation,” Hua told a regularly scheduled news conference. She said China holds Vietnam’s gov-ernment directly responsible for

the violence and will file a formal diplomatic protest.

The riot took place at a mill in Ha Tinh province in central Viet-nam, about 350 kilometers (220 miles) south of Hanoi. It followed an anti-China protest by workers at the complex, operated by the conglomerate Formosa Plastics Group, one of the biggest foreign investors in Vietnam, according to Taiwan’s top representative in the country, Huang Chih-peng, and police.

Huang, who spoke to a member of the management team at the mill Thursday morning, said rioters lit fires at several buildings and hunted down the Chinese workers, but did not target the Taiwanese management. He said the head of the provincial government and its security chief were at the mill during the riot but did not “order tough enough action.”

MANILA — The Philippine government on Thursday released military surveillance photos f Chinese land reclamation on a reef claimed by Manila in the South China Sea that it said showed Beijing violated a regional agreement not to escalate territorial disputes. Foreign Affairs Department spokesman Charles Jose said the pictures show Chinese aggressiveness in asserting its claims over the entire South China Sea.

The aerial photographs were accompanied by a caption stating that they were obtained from “Philippine intelligence sources.” The caption said the “extensive reclamation” by China on the Johnson South Reef, called Mabini by Manila and Chigua by Beijing, was “destabilizing.”

The Chinese Embassy in Manila had no immediate comment, but a Foreign Ministry spokesman in Beijing has said that the area is part of China’s territory, and that any Chinese activities at the reef should be of no concern to Manila.

Jose noted that a 2002 nonbinding agreement between China and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations calls for restraint in conducting activities in the region that would “complicate or escalate disputes” and to not inhabit uninhabited areas

“We want to show people that (China’s) actions are part of its aggressive behavior to assert its claim in violation of the DOC,” or Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, which was signed by China, Philip-pines and nine other ASEAN members, Jose said.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III said a stronger accord and interna-tional arbitration would offer more lasting solutions to the territorial conflicts. A proposed legally binding “code of conduct” between China and Southeast Asian countries is seen as a mechanism to prevent a major armed conflict in the disputed waters. Manila sought international arbitration against Beijing in January 2013 after Chinese government ships took control of a shoal claimed by the Philippines off its main island of Luzon.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said Wednesday that it was not clear what China would build on the reclaimed land, but that an airstrip was a possibility.

CHICAGO — Operations at Chicago’s two airports are returning to normal after an electrical problem at a regional radar facility forced a shutdown of all incoming and outgoing flights. Tuesday’s three-hour halt resulted in more than 1,120 cancellations at O’Hare International and Midway International airports.

By Wednesday morning, about 100 flights to and from O’Hare were scrapped and a few dozen more were delayed. That’s according to the aviation tracking website FlightAware.com. There were only minor disruptions at Midway.

The ground stop was triggered by a bathroom exhaust fan in a ceiling that overheated and melted insulation on some wires. Smoke was pushed through the radar facility’s ventilation system and into the control room. The Chicago Terminal Radar Approach Control, or TRACON, facility is in suburban Elgin.

HANOI, Vietnam — A 1,000-strong mob stormed a Taiwanese steel mill in Vietnam, killing a Chinese worker and injuring 141 others, a Taiwanese official and police said Thursday, in the first deadly incident in a wave of anti-China protests prompted by Beijing’s deployment of an oil rig in disputed seas.

The trekking path to be followed is through the plantation where there are many different kinds of plants and crops that we can meet.

In detail, the trekking activity be-gins at Banjar Kiadan pavilion to do breakfast or lunch depending on the time set to start the trekking

itself. Then proceed to the inn as a place to stay for the tourists. Not far from the inn, there is a building that is used to store coffee beans. If we

go farther we will find the plantation that stretched wide variety of plants contained in them.

When we are entering the plan-tation, we will be greeted by some herbal plants arranged neatly, then passed to the area of chayote which grows fertile. Farther then we will arrive in an area with a majority of bamboo plants that are embedded. Then spin a little bit we will find garden full of oranges and papa-

yas. From that place, we will have two options, continue the trekking or back to the inn. If we want to continue then there are many more interesting things that we can find.

With such a vast plantation areas, beautiful scenery, beautiful sur-roundings and all natural resources within it then this is a good and very interesting tracking area which can be served as another option of tour-ism in North Badung region.

MANGUPURA - Plaga is a village located in Bali, exactly in the region of North Badung. The village is rich in natural resources and the potential of tourism is also promising. Many things can be explored there. Besides several tourist attractions such as Puncak Mangu and Tukad Bangkung Bridge which called the highest in all of Asia, in this area there is also an area that can be used for tracking which of course will be very interesting for tourists who love adventure and outdoor sports activities.

San Antonio did not require any such dramatics, who again won comfortably against Port-land, with the 104-82 victory also clinching a 4-1 win which put the Spurs in the Western Confer-ence decider for a third succes-sive season. Their opponent will be Oklahoma City or the Los Angeles Clippers. Miami’s Ray Allen scored a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to cap the memorable comeback, aided by 29 points from LeBron James and 28 from Dwyane Wade.

James made one of two free throws with 9.5 seconds left to put the Heat up by two, and the Nets almost failed to get a poten-tially game-tying shot off after Paul Pierce lost it out of bounds, but it stayed with Brooklyn after

replay. However the Nets still couldn’t get a shot away: Allen knocked the ball away from Joe Johnson as he made his move, and time expired.

Johnson had 34 points, Pierce scored 19 and Deron Williams had 17 for the Nets. Miami is bidding for a fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals — something only the Lakers and Celtics fran-chises have accomplished.

James is heading there for the sixth time in eight seasons, the first two of those trips coming with Cleveland in 2007 and 2009. San Antonio had a more relaxed time of it, with Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard each scoring 22 points in the 104-82 win.

Patty Mills scored 18 points and Tim Duncan had 16 points

and eight rebounds for San An-tonio, which had four blowout victories in the five-game series. San Antonio remains on track for another NBA Finals showdown against Miami, which won a hard-fought seven-game series last season. LaMarcus Aldridge had 21 points for Portland, while Damian Lillard added 17 points and 10 assists.

A ‘megaphone’ exhaust tested by Formula One leaders Mercedes in Spain on Wednesday failed to make the quieter new cars sound any louder, race driver Nico Ros-berg said on Wednesday. “It wasn’t a great solution,” the German said in a video posted on Instagram after he had lapped Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya with what looked like a shiny vuvuzela at the back of the car.

“It just didn’t work. It didn’t make it much louder. So we’ll just have to look for another solution.” The season’s dominant team, run-away winners of all five races so far, had agreed to try out the trum-pet-like device to try and pump up the volume after complaints that the new V6 turbo hybrid cars were too quiet compared to the old V8 screamers.

The softer sound provided an immediate controversy when the season started in Australia in March with some race promoters, who met in Barcelona on Satur-day, fearing ticket sales could fall off if fans were alienated by the lack of decibels.

Others in favour of the quieter new era argue that increasing the

noise goes against the greener spirit of the regulation changes, which reduce wasted energy from the exhaust and brakes and har-ness it to improve fuel economy. “It’s an interesting moment in time for Formula One,” Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff said last weekend. “Traditionally you would have said... that Formula One needs to be loud to be spec-tacular. Maybe now that’s chang-ing.”

While the noise, or lack of it, was a talking point on Wednesday others got on with their regular business.Red Bull had quadruple champion Sebastian Vettel in their car while Venezuelan Pastor Mal-donado topped the fairly meaning-less timesheets with Lotus.

Williams had Wolff’s British wife Susie getting acquainted with their car before she becomes the first female driver since 1992 to feature in a grand prix weekend when she takes part in practice at Silverstone in July. She was fifth fastest and did 55 laps.

Belgian reserve Stoffel Van-doorne had his first drive of a Formula One car and completed enough laps with McLaren to se-cure the superlicence he will need if a race seat comes his way.

MIAMI — Miami and San Antonio both advanced to the NBA conference finals in contrasting fashion on Wednesday, with the Heat storming over the top of Brooklyn to pinch a narrow victory while the Spurs cruised past Portland. Miami trailed almost the entire game and was eight points down with less than five minutes left but found a way to pull out a 96-94 win that clinched a 4-1 series victory and a place in the Eastern Conference finals for the fourth-straight year. The Heat will face either Indiana or Washington.

Though Sevilla did not play with the precision pass-ing made famous by the national team or Barcelona, its technique in taking and saving penalties was out-standing. Just as Spain’s was when it ousted Portugal in a shootout in the Euro 2012 semifinals. Victory here ensured Spain will sweep the season-ending European club titles on May 24 when Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid play in the Champions League final.

Of course, next season’s curtain-raising UEFA Super Cup in August will now also be all-Spanish clash featuring the two club competition winners. Before then, the biggest prize of all could return to Spain. Spain will kick off its World Cup title defense in Brazil next month and seek to be the first back-to-back winner since Brazil in 1962. That would also set a record of four consecutive top-level tournament triumphs following the dominant Euro 2008 and 2012 teams.

Such is Spain’s strength that it found space for only one Sevilla player — defender Alberto Moreno — in the 30-man provisional World Cup squad an-nounced Tuesday.

Sevilla midfielder Stephane Mbia — who will go to the World Cup with Cameroon — said he was not surprised at Spain’s winning streak. “It’s just tactics. Think about everything. They play with the head,” said Mbia, who saluted to Sevilla fans behind the goal after scoring its second penalty in the 4-2 shootout win.

LONDON - Arsenal will need no reminder of the pitfalls in store for them at Wembley Stadium on Sat-urday where they will be favourites to beat Hull City in the FA Cup final and claim their first silverware for nine years. Three years ago Arsene Wenger’s side were also expected to beat Birmingham City in the League Cup final but a late goal by Obafemi Martins after a calamitous defensive mix-up ruined the script and prolonged the fans’ suffering.

Since then manager Arsene Wenger’s long reign at the club has occasionally been questioned by even some of his most loyal disciples, with some advocating a change of direction.

Arsenal’s annual qualification for the Champions League, now stand-ing at 17 seasons, continues to justify the club hierarchy’s faith in the wily Frenchman, although every year that passes without a trophy appears to add another wrinkle to Wenger’s face.

Wenger has been at pains to play down the significance of Saturday’s result, saying it will have no bearing on his ongoing contract discussion, but the 64-year-old is fooling no one as Arsenal bid for a record-equalling 11th FA Cup. Defeat by a Hull side appearing in their first FA Cup final would re-open the debate about his future.

Victory, following a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League having challenged strongly for the title for two thirds of the season, would reinforce the belief that Wenger is still the man to mastermind a golden new era for the Gunners. “Our target is to win the trophies but you judge the quality of the teams and their potential over the Premier League results,” Wenger, who won the Cup with Arsenal in 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2005, told a news conference on Wednesday.

STANFORD, California — United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann says his team has some serious catching up to do a month before its World Cup opener. Klinsmann was eager to get started on a scorching Wednesday afternoon at Stanford Stadium as the Americans began a two-week training camp leading up to a May 27 friendly against Azerbaijan at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park.

While all 30 Americans have yet to arrive in the Bay Area, Klinsmann will have the task of cutting the squad to 23 by June 2. “The reason we take 30 is we’re not sure yet,” Klinsmann said before his team took the field. “There will be intense training sessions ahead of them in order to show what they have, in every position not only as a center forward, the entire team.”

Defender Geoff Cameron and goalkeepers Tim Howard and Brad Guzan are scheduled to arrive Sunday, as Klinsmann gave them a few extra days coming from their Premier League clubs in England. Clarence Goodson, a defender with the nearby San Jose Earthquakes, led the U.S. team through the Stanford Stadium tunnel and onto the field for Day 1.

Left back DaMarcus Beasley is trying for his fourth World Cup. “I still get butterflies,” he said. “I haven’t been with the team for a while. To see all the guys’ faces, it’s good to be back with the team and obviously it’s very important. We have a lot of work to do, and a lot of work to be done in these three weeks before the team

goes to Brazil.”Klinsmann said defender Omar

Gonzalez, the Los Angeles Galaxy defender who is nursing a left knee injury from a May 3 game against Colorado, should be close to full strength later in the week. Midfielder Maurice Edu wasn’t medically cleared for Wednesday’s workout because of concussion symptoms, but can train without body contact.

Klinsmann knows he needs to evaluate everybody in short order — and a versatile, deep defense will be one of those areas even if the group is lacking in World Cup minutes.

“This is World Cup preparation, this is building a foundation for hopefully a successful World Cup,” he said. “It’s a lot of work, it’s doing our homework, it’s fine-tuning a lot of elements there on the training field, getting a sense for the guys how they’re taking it. To build every piece you’re working on, whether it’s tactical, whether it’s technical, if it’s chemistry-wise, improve it and build on it to make this team as strong as possible to go into this summer’s World Cup.

“That foundation will be laid now in these two and a half weeks in Stanford and then we obviously go with it on the road to New York and Florida before we fly down to Sao Paulo.”

With temperatures in the mid-90s Fahrenheit (mid-30s Celsius), team dietitian Danielle LaFata stressed hydration — and she has some expe-rience with it given none of the U.S. players cramped up even once during Gold Cup play last July.

Vieira says Samir Nasri’s omis-sion from the World Cup squad could return to haunt coach Didier Deschamps at next month’s tour-nament in Brazil. “I hoped it was a mistake,” Vieira, who played in France’s 1998 World Cup final victory over Brazil, said in an interview with ITV, for whom he will work as a pundit during the finals.

Manchester City playmaker Nasri ended the season in fine style, helping his club reclaim the Premier League title, but was overlooked when Deschamps named his provisional 30-man squad this week. Explaining his decision, Deschamps suggested that Nasri, who was suspended for three games after Euro 2012 for swearing at a journalist, could be a disruptive figure in the dressing room.

Vieira, however, said it was a

mistake to leave one of France’s most creative players at home. “If you want to have a chance, you have to take your best play-ers,” Vieira, who works with Manchester City as head of the elite development squad, said. “I think this year Samir has played fantastically well. He was one of our best players at City.

“He did everything to go to the World Cup. He has been scoring goals, making assists. The way he has grown up is his influence on

the group and the team. “He is a positive lad, he has been working really hard and he is taking more responsibility on his shoulder. He has got personality, and a strong personality.

“We’ve never heard anything about him (being disruptive) at City. I think in France sometimes they’re not strong enough to deal with personalities. “That is quite surprising, because Deschamps has personality and experience.”

Nasri’s girlfriend Anara Atanes

was less eloquent in her reaction to his World Cup snub, hurling abuse at Deschamps via Twitter on Wednesday. Nasri, signed by City from Arsenal, said he would have to consider his international future.

“I need to take time now to think about the national team,” he was quoted in The Times. “Because it’s been twice that they take a World Cup away from me.” Nasri also missed the tournament in South Africa in 2010.

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil — Midfielder Ignacio Piatti scored 10 minutes into the match as Argentina’s San Lorenzo held Brazilian champion Cruzeiro to a 1-1 draw to reach the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday. San Lorenzo advanced 2-1 on aggregate following a 1-0 victory last week in Argentina.

Defender Bruno opened the scoring in the 70th

San Lorenzo, which has Pope Francis as a sup-porter, can give Argentina its first Libertadores title since Estudiantes beat Cruzeiro in 2009. Also Wednesday, Nacional of Paraguay reached the semis 1-0 on aggregate after a 0-0 draw against Arsenal de Sarandi in Argentina.

Having finished the Premier League season with five consecutive victories and Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey back from injury, Arsenal will be buoyant as they prepare to face Steve Bruce’s Hull, but not complacent. “To be favourites doesn’t guarantee you anything,” Wenger, whose side have beaten Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Everton en route to the final, said.

“It just means if you turn up on the day of the game with a good per-formance you have more chance of winning. “I don’t believe we need any warning. We know that a final is a final, that Hull are a Premier League team, they can pass the ball, they can create chances. It’s just down to us to perform

well on the day of the game.”While Arsenal are preparing for

their 18th FA Cup final, Hull’s previ-ous best performance in the compe-tition was a semi-final appearance in 1930 when they lost to Arsenal in a replay. The Gunners went on to win their maiden FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town in the final.

In their 110-year history Hull have never won anything other than the Division Three title in 1966. Manager Bruce said that while Arsenal are fa-vourites, his side will take heart from Wigan Athletic’s surprise victory over Manchester City in last year’s final and also the fact that neutrals settling down to watch the match on TV will be rooting for his underdogs.

“If you’re not an Arsenal fan, I’m sure the rest of the world will be root-ing for Hull,” Bruce, who won two FA Cup medals as a Manchester United player, said this week.

“We all saw what Wigan did last year. For me, it brings back a bit of the glamour. That’s what the FA Cup is about. The mighty Arsenal facing the small club of Hull. “That was my ap-proach this year. I thought we’re never going to win the league but we’ve got a chance to win the FA Cup.”

Sevilla’s Europa title extends Spain’s winning run

TURIN, Italy — Spanish football wins. Again. Sevilla added another title to the top-ranked country’s recent roll of interna-tional honors Wednesday, beating Portugal’s champion Benfica in a penalty shootout after the Europa League final finished 0-0 after extra time. Since 2006, Sevilla has won this competition three times, Barcelona has won three Champions League titles and Spain has taken home three straight major tournament trophies.

“Spanish football is like a family. It’s a great thing for a player,” said the Cameroonian, who has also played in France and England. Sevilla coach Unai Emery said his team had had a “responsibility to win” the trophy for fans after a 19-match, nine-month trek through the tournament. It began Aug. 1 with a 3-0 at home to Mladost Podgorica of Montenegro.

“There were 30,000 in the stadium when usually they would

be on holiday or on the beach,” Emery said. Not bad for a club which failed to qualify for the competition by right.

Sevilla got into the Europa League only after two clubs which finished above it in last season’s La Liga table were denied entry by UEFA for their financial problems — the flipside of Spain’s football success during a major economic crisis there. Malaga’s and Rayo Vallecano’s losses led to Sevilla’s gain. And Spain’s. Again.

well on the day of the game.”While Arsenal are preparing for

their 18th FA Cup final, Hull’s previ-ous best performance in the compe-tition was a semi-final appearance in 1930 when they lost to Arsenal in a replay.

Sevilla players and officials celebrate with the trophy after defeating Benfica in their Europa League final soc-cer match at the Juventus stadium in Turin May 14, 2014.

Sevilla’s Europa title extends Spain’s winning run

Associated Press Writer

Again.

Hundreds of people were attending funerals for the victims in the western mining town of Soma; dozens and dozens of graves have been dug, ready to receive the bodies.

(kmb27)

(kmb38)

Observation at location on Tuesday (May 13) indicated if the coastal conditions were getting crushed. A food stall had been hit by sea waves for many times. Puddles of seawater in the agricultural area of residents caused the paddy of farm-ers to be threatened with crop failure. Fortunately, most of the paddy plants in the agricultural area had been harvested. “The paddy plants having been submerged can no longer be harvested though they are still green. Rice ears must be empty,” said a local farmer, Wayan Trepti.

The high tide on the beach had been going on since Mon-day night (May 12) accompanied by strong winds where its peak occurred on Tuesday morning (May 13). He said the soaked agricultural areas reached dozens of hectares spread-

ing from Lepang to Sidayu region. It often took place, almost every month. Seawater at the shoreline often went up and was ferocious. Every high tide, the seawater would inundate the farmland. Typically, the high tide occurred on certain days, such as new moon and full moon. When the farmland was flooded, farmers often faced harvest failure because the seawater disrupted the growth of paddy plants. “By and large, the condition is not as bad as this one. The whole paddy plants were drowned this morning,” said Trepti.

Another resident, Ketut Sari, usually worked in one of the food stalls on the local beach said on Tuesday that high tide on Tuesday was pretty awful. During her lifetime at the shoreline, the high tide frequently occurred. However, the

one occurred on Tuesday was considered the most severe and made surrounding people anxious. “Similar high tides once occurred about two years ago,” said Sari. It did not only threaten the agricultural areas, but also the large projects like the condotel and villatel on the shore. A number of officers were panic. They were forced to dredge beach sand around the project area to hamper the high tide.

The investors establishing the condotel and villatel at Lepang coastline were quite reckless because the waves on this beach were known ferocious. Even, the east side of the building was submerged during the high tides.

Banjarangkan subdistrict has a coastline along 4,000 meters, Tegal Besar (2,000 meters), Lepang Beach (1,000 meters) and Sidayu Beach (1,000 meters). Of the 4,000 meters long, 3,000 meters are prone to abrasion and have not been handled. Residents have long complained about the abrasion on the shoreline. Even, a number of local residents claim to loss their land property rights they cultivated because of the abrasion. However, so far it gets very minimal handling. (kmb13)

Bali PostSEMARAPURA - Abrasion on the coastline of Lepang Beach, Banjarangkan subdistrict, Klungkung,

is increasingly more serious. Sea waves severely grind down again to a hundred meters to the inland. As a result, local residents were alarmed. Even, dozens of hectares of farmland were submerged in seawater. Ironically, the paddy plants remaining green to near harvest in the agricultural areas were also submerged in seawater.
