    A. Summary of the Lesson Plan:This is the last lesson of chapter 13 and the conclusion of the second portion in a Civil War

    unit. During this lesson, students will learn about the new freedoms and continual

    challenges after Reconstruction. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 5th

    grade SocialStudies textbook: United States History, pages 482-485 for this lesson.

    B. Target Population: Grade Level: 5th grade Skill Level: at grade level Grouping: whole group discussion, paired work and individual assignments

    C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin 5th grade Social Studies textbook: United States History, pages 482-485 Social Studies journals Pencils Loose leaf paper Poster paper Colored pencils

    D. Objectives:o NV State Social Studies Standards

    H 2.5.2- Describe issues of compromise and conflict within the UnitedStates

    o Student-Friendly Standards Students will be able to explain in detail the end of the Reconstruction

    period and the effects it had on various groups of people.

    E. Procedure:1. Introduce the lesson to students by discussing various opportunities and freedoms

    American share. Point out that with freedoms come challenges, such as the ones the

    African Americans faced post Civil War and Reconstruction.

    2. Explain vocabulary words associated with this lesson. Students should write words anddefinitions in the vocabulary section of their social studies journals. Definitions are onpage T482

    3. Students will popcorn read pages of the lesson. One student will read until theteacher says stop, student will pick another student to continue where previous student

    stopped until teacher says stop, and repeat.

    4. Conduct discussion while popcorn reading. Use prompts to guide discussions:o Why did sharecroppers usually stay poor?o Describe the Ku Klux Klan and what they did?o What were some disappointments of the Reconstruction?o What is the importance of the Jim Crow laws?

    5. Students will work independently orin pairs on the Extend Lesson 5 activities on page486-487.

    6. Explain the activities and expectations to students. Allow them to pick between theactivities: Make Your Own Poster or Write About It

    7. Students should read the content on the pages for more information about the activitythey choose to complete.

    8. CLOSURE: Students will share and explain their extended activity to the whole class.Whole group discussion will occur following presentations.

    F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

    I will use informal assessment based on reading and discussions. Rubrics for the extend

    activity are on page T487. Posters and essays should be accurate and complete

    based on information within past lessons.

    Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.I will know students understand the content of this lesson when they can effectively

    explain and describe events that occurred during the end of the Reconstruction and

    the effects they have on various people.

    G. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

    This entire lesson should be pretty easy to teach. The lesson gives students a lot of

    freedom to make their own choices on activities to complete which should be fun

    too.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?Because we have not seen a Reconstruction period like this in a long time, I think

    some of the various events might be difficult for students to fully comprehend since

    they are not familiar.

    The follow up for this lesson will be in a formal assessment based on the content of

    the entire unit.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?I will answer all questions and misconceptions students have through small group or

    one-on-one time with students.

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I dont think any part of the lesson needs to change. The activity might take longer

    than a day to complete though.

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?The most difficult part of writing this lesson was coming up with an activity that had

    an appropriate connection to the lesson. We have done a lot of different activities

    throughout the lesson and coming up with something different was difficult.
