Transcript of Ed Sheeran Advertisement Analysis

Character: This music advert is interesting as it does not show any characters in the advertisement. This was done to express the popularity of the artist Ed Sheeran as people will just know who he is without having to show any characters or photographs of him in the advertisement. Instead of a character, in replace there in a green background with a black, bold X sign which is the front cover of his newest album, Multiply (X).

Narrative Event: The narrative event represented in this album is shown by the grittiness of the advertisement and the album cover along with the font. The quotes striking and beautiful and rich are used on this advertisement to show how other forms of media have described this album, making the viewer wonder about this album as Ed Sheerans style of music is usually softer. The narrative that these quotes and the rigid, sharp style of advertisement are to show that Ed Sheerans music is now rougher rather than soft. Although that most of his songs can be referred to as softer and calm, his overall music tends to be more electric in terms of the guitar, for example, rather than acoustic; expressing a change from his old style of music.

Iconography: Iconography is shown within this whole music advertisement due to the large multiply sign, the typography and the text saying Ed Sheeran in large writing. The large multiply sign is iconic as the audience will most likely know that Ed Sheerans last album was called Plus (+). Therefore, the mathematical symbols show to be iconic to Ed Sheeran as it is a simple way which he names his albums. The typography is also iconic for Ed Sheerans music as most advertisements which you would find from Ed Sheeran tend to use the font which is used. The font used tends to be quite bold and rigid as though it was a type of stamp. Also the colours which are used could be referred to as iconic, because although Ed Sheeran tends to be iconic with the colour orange; his last album was mainly orange and white whereas these colours and just green and black, maintaining the pattern of just using two colours for his albums.

Setting: The whole advertisement is computer based to show the grittier, rigid style of this album. This is useful due to the album containing songs which are a bit more fierce such as Bloodstream. However it could also show binary opposition in comparison to his songs in the album as the album is computer styled whereas to most of his songs being slower with a soul music style such as Thinking Out Loud and Photograph.

Technical/audio codes : This advertisement is computer based throughout creating a computer based style to the advertisement. This has been shown in cases such as the font being created to show it has been done on a machine, however the font has also been styled to create a sort of stamp/marker pen style making it look as though it has been hand drawn, giving it a more creative approach other than just computerized. The colour scheme which has been thoroughly used is green and black which makes the advertisement unique and eye catching, therefore people will remember this and it would eventually become iconic to Ed Sheerans new album. This colour scheme is also simple therefore the poster would be more recognisable and remembered as the simple colour scheme doesn't attract too much attention as it gets straight to the point on what is being advertised. Another technical code which has been used is the review quotes from big news companies such as The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian rating the album 5 stars. This is useful as people will be intrigued in buying this album as large companies are saying positive things about it.
