Eco-districts: Test Beds for Technology and Infrastructure Innovation and Linking Mitigation and Adaptation
Joan Fitzgerald Professor of Urban and Public Policy
What is District-level Sustainability?
• An eco-district? • Application of multiple climate action
measures and district-level systems at a scale bigger than a building but smaller than the entire city.
Does District-level Sustainability
• Incorporate the “three E’s” (equity, economy, ecology) of sustainability, demonstrating that they could be more fully incorporated city-wide?
• Demonstrate the feasibility of technologies and strategies that could allow a city to meet goals of climate action plan if implemented city-wide?
• Foster a culture of city planning that breaks down silos that can limit achieving climate action goals and allow organizational learning to take place?
