Making a Call by Using an IP-Address

Direct IP calling allows two phones to talk to each other in an ad hoc fashion without aSIP proxy. VoIP calls can be made between two phones when:

Both phones have public IP addresses.

Both phones obtain the private or public IP addresses on the same LAN/VPNnetwork.

Both phones can be connected through a router by using public or private IPaddresses (with configuring a valid port or DMZ).

All the necessary ports should be open to the two phones.

To make a direct IP call, do as follows:

Step 1 Press OK to access the main menu.

Step 2 Select Direct IP Call by using the navigation keys.

Step 3 Press OK to select.

Step 4 Input the 12-digit target IP address.

Step 5 Press OK to initiate the call.

For example, if the target IP address is 192.168.1.60 and the port is 5062 (such as192.168.1.60:5062), input 192*168*1*60#5062. The * key represents a dot “.”; and the# key represents a colon “:”. Press OK to dial.

Quick IP Call Mode

Dial an IP address in the same LAN/VPN network by keying in the last octet of the IPaddress. This simulates a PBX function using the CMSA/CD without a SIP server. Inthis mode, the controlled static IP address is recommended to use.

In the Advanced Settings page, set the Use Quick IP-call Mode to Yes. When #*xxxis dialed (the range of x is 0–9 and xxx is no larger than 255), a direct IP call is initiatedas aaa.bbb.ccc.XXX. aaa.bbb.ccc is the local IP address regardless of the subnet mask. The numbers #*xx or #*x are also valid. The leading 0 is not mandatory

Page 24: EchoLife ET523 IP Phone User Manual (2)

EchoLife ET523 IP Phone User Manual 3 Using the IP Phone

19

For example:

192.168.0.2 calls 192.168.0.3— dial #*3, followed by SEND.

192.168.0.2 dials #*3; #*03; or #*003, which means the same––call192.168.0.3.

192.168.0.2 calls 192.168.0.23––dial #*23, followed by SEND.

192.168.0.2 calls 192.168.0.123––dial #*123, followed by SEND.

Table 4-3 Device configuration–basic settings

Field Description

End User Password Contains the password to access the web configuration page. This field is case sensitive with a maximum length of 25characters.

IP Address The ET523 operates in two modes:

DHCP/PPPoE mode: All the field values for the static IPmode are not used (even though they are still saved in theFlash memory). The ET523 acquires its IP address from thefirst DHCP server it discovers on its LAN. The host name andthe domain name can be assigned by either DHCP server ormanually. Preferred DNS can be changed but notrecommended because the DHCP server handles all these.

Host Name and Domain Name: The special DHCPoptions that are added to the DHCP Discover and DHCPRequest after configuration.

Preferred DNS: It overrides other DNS servers wereceived from DHCP or PPPoE if configured

To use the PPPoE feature, the PPPoE account settings need tobe set. The ET523 will attempt to establish a PPPoE session ifany of the PPPoE fields is set.

Static IP mode: Configure all of the following fields: IPaddress, Subnet Mask, Default Router IP address, DNSServer 1 (primary), DNS Server 2 (secondary). These fieldsare set to zero by default.

Function keys 1–7 You can assign a function to the corresponding function key.The available functions include:

Speed dial

Asterisk BLF

Presence Watcher

Eventlist BLF

Each function is assigned to one of the 4 accounts and has atarget user ID.

Time Zone This parameter controls the date/time display according tothe specified time zone. If the DHCP Option 2 is enabled, the DHCP server can override and centrally control the TimeZone settings in the phone. The feature functions on thephone only when you have correctly set NTP server.

Page 38: EchoLife ET523 IP Phone User Manual (2)

33

Field Description

Daylight SavingsTime

This parameter controls whether to set the displayed time tothe daylight savings time. If it is set to Yes and the optionalrule is empty, then the displayed time will be 1 hour ahead ofthe normal time.

The daylight savings time will be automatically adjustedaccording to the rule set in the Optional Rule field. The rulesyntax include: start-time end-time and saving. Bothstart-time and end-time have the same syntax: month, day, weekday, hour, minute.

Month: 1,2,3, … , 12 (for Jan, Feb, .., Dec)

Day: [+|-]1,2,3, … , 31

Weekday: 1, 2, 3, … , 7 (for Mon, Tue, .., Sun), or 0 thatmeans the daylight saving rule is not based on weekdaysbut based on the day of the month.

hour: hour (0–23)

minute: minute (0–59)

If weekday is set to 0, it means the daylight saving time startsor ends at the given date. In this case, the day value cannot benegative. If weekday is not set to 0 and the day value ispositive, then the daylight saving time starts on the first “day”iteration of the weekday (such as 1st Sunday, 3rd Tuesdayetc).

If weekday is not set to 0 and the day value is negative, thenthe daylight saving time starts on the last “day”iteration ofthe weekday (last Sunday, 3rd last Tuesday etc). This featureis supported on the phone only when you have correctly setthe NTP server.).

The saving takes “minute”as the unit. The saving time mayalso be preceded by a negative (–) sign if subtraction isdesired instead of addition.

When the default Automatic Daylight Saving Time Rulevalue is set to 3,2,7,2,0;11,1,7,2,0;60, which complies therule of US.

For example:

US/Canada where daylight saving time is applicable:

03,02,7,02,00;11,1,7,02,00;60.

This means the daylight saving time starts from the secondSunday of March at 2 am and ends on the first Sunday ofNovember at 2 am. The saving is 60 minutes.

37

Field Description

Voice Framesper TX

This field contains the number of voice frames to be transmittedin a single Ethernet packet (be advised the limit is based on themaximum size of Ethernet packet, 1500 byte or 120 kbps).

When setting this value, you should pay attention to therequested packet time (ptime used in SDP message). Thisparameter is associated with the first codec in the above codecpreference list or the actual used payload type negotiatedbetween the 2 conversation parties at the running time. Forexample, if the first codec is configured as G.723 and the VoiceFrames per TX is set to 2, then the ptime value in the SDPmessage of an INVITE request will be 60 ms because eachG.723 voice frame contains 30 ms of audio. Similarly, if thisfield is set to 2 and the first codec is G.729 or G.711 or G.726,then the ptime value in the SDP message of an INVITE requestwill be 20 ms.

If the configured voice frames per TX exceeds the maximumvalue, the IP phone will use and save the maximum permittedvalue for the corresponding first codec choice. The maximumvalue for PCM is 10 (x10ms) frames; for G.726, it is 20 (x10ms)frames; for G.723, it is 32 (x30ms) frames; for G.729/G.728, 64(x10ms) and 64 (x2.5ms) frames respectively.

Pay attention to editing these parameters. Adjusting theseparameters will also change the dynamic jitter buffer. Thephone has a patent dynamic jitter buffer for handling algorithm. The jitter buffer range is 20–200 ms.

You are recommends to use the default settings, and not tochange these parameters as a common user. Incorrect settingswill affect the voice quality.

Layer 3 QoS This field defines the Layer 3 QoS parameter. It is the valueused for IP Precedence or Diff-Serv or MPLS. The default valueis 48.

Layer 2 QoS This contains the value used for Layer 2 VLAN tag. The defaultsetting is blank.

No Key EntryTimeout

The default value is 4 seconds. Dialed number will be sent outafter this set duration without pressing SEND

Use # as

Dial Key

This parameter allows users to configure the # key as theSEND. If it is set to Yes, the # key will immediately send thecall. If it is set to No, the # key is included as part of the dialstring.

The default value is5004.

Use RandomPort

When this parameter is set to Yes, the 523 will force the randomgeneration of both the local SIP and RTP ports. This is usuallynecessary when multiple ET523s are behind the same NAT.The default value is No.

Keep-aliveinterval

This parameter specifies how often the ET523 sends a blankUDP packet to the SIP server in order to keep the “hole”on theNAT router open. The default value is 20 seconds. Theminimum value is 10.

Use NAT IP NAT IP address used in the SIP/SDP message. The defaultsetting is blank.

STUN Server IP address or Domain name of the STUN server. The STUNresolution result will display in the STATUS page of the Webconfiguration page. STUN NAT resolution does not work forsymmetric NAT. STUN is a client-server protocol. A VoIPphone or software package may include a STUN client, whichwill send a request to a STUN server. The server then reportsback to the STUN client what the public IP address of the NATrouter is, and what port is opened by the NAT to allowincoming traffics back to the network.

Firmware upgrades take around 20 seconds in a controlled LAN or 2–3 minutes overthe Internet. Huawei recommends you to complete firmware upgrades in a controlledLAN environment whenever possible.

Solution for No Local TFTP Server

For users without local TFTP servers, Huawei provides a NAT-friendly TFTP server onthe public Internet. They can download latest firmware. Check the support/downloadsection of our website to obtain this TFTP server IP address:http://www.huawei.com/y–firmware.htm. Each product has a unique TFTP serveraddress.

Alternatively, the user can download and install a free TFTP or HTTP server to performfirmware upgrades in the LAN. A free Windows version TFTP server is available on theaddress: http://tftpd32.jounin.net.

Configuring the Local TFTP Server

Step 1 The PC runs the TFTP server and the ET523 should be in the same LANsegment.

Step 2 Properly configure the parameters of the TFTP server. (The configurationsteps are subject to different TFTP servers.)

Step 3 Start the TFTP server.

Page 58: EchoLife ET523 IP Phone User Manual (2)

EchoLife ET523 IP Phone User Manual 5 Software Upgrade & Customization

53

Step 4 Configure the IP address of the firmware server path on the web configurationpage.

Step 5 Update the change and reboot the phone.

The users can download the HTTP server for free in the Internet.

When the ET523 boots up, it will send the TFTP or HTTP request fordownloading the configuration file cfg001882xxxxxx, in which001882xxxxxx is the MAC address of the ET523. This file is for initialprovisioning only.

For normal TFTP or HTTP firmware upgrades, the following error messagesin a TFTP or HTTP server log can be ignored: “TFTP Error from [IPADRESS] requesting cfg00188223dd45: File does not exist. ConfigurationFile Download”.

Downloading the Configuration FileThe ET523 can be configured through the web interface and the configuration file onthe TFTP or HTTP server. Config Server Path is the TFTP or HTTP server path for theconfiguration file. It needs to be set with a valid URL, either in FQDN or IP addressformat.

A configuration parameter is associated with each particular field in the webconfiguration page. A parameter consists of a capital letter P and the digit 2–3 (can beextended to 4 in the future). For example, P2 is associated with Admin Password in theAdvanced Settings page. For a detailed parameter list, refer to the correspondingconfiguration template of the firmware.

Once the ET523 boots up (or reboots), it will request a configuration file namedcfgxxxxxxxxxxxx, in which xxxxxxxxxxxx is the MAC address of the device, such ascfg0018820102AB. The name of the configuration file should be in lower case.

With no effect on the firmware upgrade, this function needs the support ofother software. If needed, contact the service provider.

Managing Firmware and Downloaded ConfigurationFile

When Automatic Upgrade is set to Yes, a service provider can use P193 (Auto CheckInterval in minute, and the default and minimum interval is 60 minutes) to checkdevices periodically for upgrades at pre-scheduled interval. By defining differentintervals in P193 for different devices, a server provider can manage and reduce thefirmware or provisioning server load at any given time.
