It is only when we can dream of a brighter today that we can truly have hope for tomorrow. The Urban Ministry conference provides the opportunities and challenges to reach out beyond self to envision new possibilities for our community and world. It’s a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin luther King, Jr., a great drum major for justice, ‘Justice’ in the sense of fairness and recognizing the humanity of all people. Through and by the grace of God each day we witness people who dream of a brighter day and are filled with hope for tomorrow who will share their stories with our congregation in our worship experience on Sunday Morning, ordinary people whose lives have been touched by the love of God, the care and compassion of others. I invite you to ‘come Sunday’ but not only Sunday but to all of the events planned for the Urban Ministry conference and experience God’s transforming love and the Beloved community.

As we continue our sermon series about “ M o s e s a n d T h e

Promised land,” our journey leads us to the

story about crossing the Red Sea, recorded in exodus 14 which I hope you will read before coming to worship this Sunday. every time I think of this story, it brings back memories of watching the movie “The Ten commandments” when I was a young boy growing up in long Island. charlton heston was the actor who played Moses, and when the hebrew people had walked through the dry land to the other side, Moses lifted his arms and the walls of water came tumbling down on the egyptian armies. Cecil B. DeMille directed that film and it was a very dramatic scene! Our sermon on Sunday is entitled “A Way Out Of No Way”, which comes from a book written by Ambassador Andrew Young as he tells the story of his own spiritual journey and the civil Rights era, events which of course are still unfolding today. And so it is in our own lives, where the lord has helped us make it through hard times and shown us his way and his will, even when we weren’t sure where to go or what to do. That will be the focus of our sermon, and I look forward to seeing all of you in the sanctuary as we worship God in this first month of the New Year 2011!

youth who have experienced traumatic change such as divorce, abandonment, deployment of parent with the military, incarceration or death. Parents and guardians also meet as a group to consider what is happening in their families from the child’s point of view. This program is open to the community and there is no charge. What a wonderful show to remind us that we are all special and that we should love and accept others even if they are different from us. Thanks to the incredible musicians, the lighting and technical crew, the backstage crew, all the parents who sold tickets, worked with costumes, did make-up, and concessions, the college stu-dents who worked so hard on the set, but most especially the wonderful youth of First Presbyterian and Hillside Presbyterian!
