Nicole, 25. Nurse, Canadian—Big Indochina, September 2009“I liked that you got to see different parts of

countries. We weren’t only visiting the bigcities, we went off to smaller stops. I felt likemore of a traveller than a tourist – that’s what Ireally liked about it.”

Eddie, 25. Firefighter, Australian—Asian Adventure, Aug 2009

“It was nice to be travelling with peoplearound the world that were my age. I knewthey’d have similar interests & want to do thesame kind of things that I did. I definitely feel itwas an adventure trip with culture, not just arelaxing trip.”

Dana, 28. Dentist, American—Vietnam Explorer, July 2009

“I looked at doing it myself & couldn’t havedone it as cheaply, in the same timeframe.I appreciated walking into a hotel, being givenmy key & having a guaranteed place to stay –that saved a lot of time. Arrive, chuck your bagin & get straight out to do the great optionalactivities.”

Paris, 23. IT Consultant, British—Asian Adventure, May 2009

“Other than flights to & from Asia, you canget by with very little money once you’re ontour. All our transport was included, plus hotels& breakfasts. You got people from all walks oflife, I think it was a great price that made thetour accessible to anybody.”

Matt, 28. Law student, American—Asian Adventure, July 2009

“All our accommodation was really good. We stayed in guesthouses a couple of timeswhich were really different & interesting. I reallyliked it because this variety made it a reallyauthentic experience. It really gave you achance to meet some of the locals to see whatthey do. It wouldn’t have been the same if we’dstayed in hotels the whole time.”

“We got a great balance of time. Since there are othercouples & lots of singles, you never feel the pressure to bewith either your partner or the group 100% of the time. Usually at night, the group would walk to the local market, where we could either eat together - just the two of us, or withthe rest of the group.”

14ON THE ROAD

One of the best things about your trip to Asia will definitely be getting around on our manydifferent modes of transport.

From 4-wheels, to 2-wheels, to no wheels (withpaddles & outboard motors instead), there are upto 10 different types of transport involved on aContiki Asia trip.

Unlike our Contiki tours in other parts of theworld, we run smaller groups of up to 25 peoplein Asia, so our coach transport ranges in size. Butwe always use private, air-con coaches instead oflocal ones, which means we can get you to moreremote places, quickly & easily.

To reduce travelling time between destinations,we use internal flights with reliable VietnamAirlines, giving you more time in the places thatcount, so you won’t miss stuff.

After that, that’s where the fun really begins –overnight trains, rickshaws, tuk-tuks, long tailboats, bicycles, wooden canoes & a traditionalChinese junk boat are some of the Contikitransport selection.

Much of our transport is private, which representsfantastic value. From the minibuses, to Mekongboats – you won’t be squashed in with a bunch ofother travelers. You’ll have the space to reallyrelax, enjoy the travel time & take it all in.

– In Laos, those that need an artificial limb orsupport device, like a wheelchair, are helpedby COPE (Co-operative Orthotic & ProstheticEnterprise). We visit the COPE Centre, wherevisitors are educated about what happens to victims of unexploded objects, such aslandmines, their support & rehabilitation.

Answers to frequently asked questions & things you need to know.

Do I need visas?Depending on your nationality, you may requirevisas to enter certain countries included in yourtour. You are fully responsible for obtaining allnecessary visas prior to the departure of yourtour. Contiki is not legally permitted toknowingly allow anybody who does not have avalid visa to join a tour. Visa & other entry & exit conditions (such ascurrency, arrival/departure taxes, customs &quarantine regulations) change regularly.Consult your travel agent or visitwww.visadirect.co.nz to determine which visasyou require & how to obtain them.Your passport must have at least six months’validity remaining when you arrive in Cambodia,Thailand, Vietnam & Laos. Local immigrationauthorities may deny entry & deport peoplewho do not meet this requirement, even if theyintend on staying only for a short period. Important to consider:1.Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is

normally charged. 2.Failure to obtain all necessary visas could

cause you to miss part of your tour & willresult in you incurring considerable expense& inconvenience.

3.It is better to apply for all visas through yourtravel agent before you leave home. Beaware that many visas can be purchased &arranged on arrival.

4.It is very important that the entry & exitdates are correct on the visa. Your travelagent will contact Contiki for full details.

How much luggagecan I bring? The amount of luggage that you can bring isentirely up to you. There are some things toconsider when packing for a Contiki Asia tour:• Due to the large number of flights on Contiki

Asia tours, your luggage needs to meet theweight & restrictions imposed by airlines. These limits are imposed by the airlines, notby Contiki. Contiki is not responsible for anycosts incurred by overweight luggage.

• You are responsible for carrying your ownluggage. At times this will be in hotelswithout elevators (as is common to theregion), or onto various forms of transport, such as trains.

• At hotels with elevators, there maybe portersto assist with bags, but this is not guaranteed.

It is suggested to keep your luggage to amaximum suitcase size of 73cm x 50cm x25cm (29" x 20" x 10") & maximum weight of20 kg (44lbs) plus one small hand/day bag thatcan be carried with you. NO EXTERNAL METALFRAME BACKPACKS PLEASE, their bulkyshape makes packing into transports difficult.Use of a backpack/rucksack is suggested, butnot required. Wheeled suitcases can be usedon Contiki tours in Asia. The Contiki Tour Manager may suggest youstore your main luggage & utilize a smaller bagfor overnight rail journeys, overnight junk boator overnight stays at guesthouses. A smalldaypack/backpack of approx 26L capacity issuggested.Contiki reserves the right to refuse to acceptlarger suitcases on tour. Baggage is carried atthe owner’s risk & baggage insurance isstrongly recommended.

Tipping & servicestandardsAsia is developing a large tipping culture.Tipping is seen as customary in the serviceindustry for those that provide a high level ofservice, as well as a way of saying ‘thank you’for a job well done. All tipping for local guides& drivers is included as part of the localpayment. Be aware that services & standardsin Asia may not be equivalent to those youfind at home.

Brochure authenticityWe have put a great deal of effort intoproducing this brochure. The information given& literature produced by Contiki has beencompiled with care & is published in good faith.Sometimes, because of circumstances outsideour control, we have to alter some activitiesdue to seasonal closing or repairs to buildings, etc, especially early or late in the season. If thishappens, alternative activities will be arranged.

What do I need forthe Sapa Extension?Offered on the Big Indochina, & all Vietnamdepartures, is the opportunity to visit Sapa inNorthern Vietnam – a region known for itsethnic minorities & stunning scenery. This extension involves a moderate level ofphysical activity, as the tour takes in ahike/trek. You will require hiking shoes and asmall backpack, or your Tour Manager canorganise them in Hanoi.

How much money do I need? You will need to ensure you allow enoughmoney to cover optional lunches & dinners, souvenirs, shopping, drinks, optional activities, entrance fees to some attractions &evening entertainment. When travelling with Contiki in Asia, you’ll findthat you’ll often be using local currencies, particularly in remote areas. The localcurrencies encountered on tour are the Riel(Cambodia), Kip (Laos), Baht (Thailand) or Dong(Vietnam). The countries we visit rely largely oncash as opposed to credit cards or travellerscheques. In the larger cities you’ll find thatestablished stores will accept credit cardsreadily, while local market stalls will operate on acash only basis – accepting only local currency.Local currency is readily available through cashmachines in each country. Obtaining a smallamount of local currency before you travel isalso a good idea. ATMs that dispense local currency are widelyavailable. However, you can’t depend solely ona credit/debit card for cash as they are notaccepted in all areas. We advise you also carry $US cash in smalldenominations that you can use as an alternateform of payment. Please note that travellers cheques are generallyonly accepted in big cities at money exchangesor banks to change to local currency.

Explore Moreoptional activitiesOptionals are arranged & paid for on tour. Byleaving the final decisions until then you canchoose at the same time as your new friends &you’ll get great value with our speciallynegotiated rates. Some activities are seasonal& weather dependent. Our optional activities offered on Contiki Asiatours are operated by 3rd party operators. While every attempt is made to ensure thesafety of all activities, the nature of the regionmeans that public liability protection that isoffered in many countries, may not beapplicable in many cases. A waiver will need to be signed by all tour participants to ensurethat these conditions are understood &accepted. We highly recommendcomprehensive travel insurance.

Do I needvaccinations? At the time this brochure went to press(November 2009), the following immunizationsare recommended for travellers in SoutheastAsia by the CDC (US Centre for DiseasesControl & Prevention): • Diphtheria & tetanus • Hepatitis A• Hepatitis B • Typhoid• Rabies • Japanese B

EncephalitisMalaria & dengue fever are also an issue withinthis region. You should consult a travel doctorwho specialises in travel medicines or your localdoctor to advise on what vaccinations and/orpreventative medicines would be required.Don’t forget to bring with you any medicationthat you may require en route such asantihistamines, antibiotics, etc.
