If you were drawn in by this head-line, chances are you know or are theparent of a teenager who likes to argue.Let’s talk about why this happens.

First off, if your teenager has success-fully made it past sixth grade, congratu-lations! They have received their hon-orary law degree.

That’s right, your child is now a suc-cessful litigator. Here’s why: They canlitigate and theycan advocate theircase. They canswitch venues fromthe bedroom to theliving room and oninto your bedroom.They can also delaythe trial, like whenyou say, “Come inhere, we need totalk,” and they say,“Not now, I can’tpause the game!”They can also citecase precedent:“Yeah, but Jamie’smom lets herkids…”

The next step inthese debates is generally escalation andname-calling. Then threats get made,feelings get hurt, and no one’s ready toback down. From there it can get evenuglier.

As a family therapist, here are threeof the most common things parents tellme when talking about problems withtheir teens:

• “He always has to get the last wordin.”

• “I tried to tell her.”• Or “I just want him to understand.”Here’s the reality – if you are the par-

ent, you have to be the parent. In the ageof self-esteem awareness and accommo-dating the child’s need to be heard, theauthority role of a parent can becomeforgotten.

As the parent, you are the authorityfigure. You are not the head of CustomerService for your child. When a parent isarguing (debating or “trying to explain")with their child, no matter how loud the

parent’s voice can get, they are nolonger in control of the situation. Thearguing creates a level playing fieldbetween parent and child and the argu-ing parent loses their authority. Andchances are the child could repeat theparent’s argument verbatim and willhave committed to memory the parent’scatch phrases (which is usually wherethe eye roll comes in).

The common problem of the parentsdealing with oppositional teens is thatthey hold onto the belief that if they canget through to their child on an intellec-tual level, they can help their childchange his behavior.

However, the child often has thesame belief. This is where you see theworthless competition to get that “lastword.”

When both of these argumentativeforces are clashing, it only gets worse –name-calling, threats, hurt feelings, andthen the communication breakdown.

To stop this pattern, the therapists atKatkin and Associates work to create aspecific plan to end the family conflictand to put the parent back as the author-ity figure.

Here are five simple slimdown secrets to help you –working with your veterinarian– help your pet live a leaner,healthier life.

Secret 1:Have your veterinarian rule

out medical reasons for excessweight.

Some conditions can lead toweight gain.

Your veterinarian can screenfor these and help to managethem before starting a weight lossprogram.

Secret 2:Don’t say “I love you” with

food. Instead, spend quality time

with your pet. Take your dog for a walk or

play with your cat using a fluffytail wand.

Secret 3:Increase your pet’s activity

level.Be sure to consult with your

veterinarian first, so you keep theexercise safe and appropriate foryour pet’s age and health status.

Secret 4:Make portion control a priori-

ty.Your veterinarian can tell you

the exact amount of food to feedyour pet each day to achieve ahealthy weight, so you don’t needto guess.

Track intake carefully, andmake sure everyone in the house-hold knows not to exceed thedaily volume of allowed food.

Secret 5:Treats count, too.

If you are feeding your pettreats, these calories need to besubtracted from the total caloriesallotted for the day, and theyshouldn’t exceed 10 percent ofthat allotment.

Cedar Village RetirementCommunity, located in Mason, Ohio, isin the midst of a major remodel andreconstruction project of its 300,000-square-foot facility to increase its short-term rehabilitation unit by 70 percent.

Divided into multiple constructionphases, the project will create new andexpanded therapy space for inpatientsand outpatients, a new clinic area, aremodeled ambulance entrance, an addi-tional elevator and updated residentrooms on two units.

Cedar Village currently has 29 dedi-cated beds for short-term, skilled reha-bilitation and a therapy gym designedfor 15 people.

“Over the past 14 years as people areliving longer, healthier lives, they wantto recover quickly after an illness orinjury and get back to their lives,” saidCarol Silver Elliott, CEO and presidentof Cedar Village.

“In order to accommodate the growthand demand for therapy services, we’veembarked on this major constructionproject to expand the use of our facility.This renovation will help us meet ourcurrent demand for rehabilitation servic-es and positions us well for the future.”

Silver Elliott said the $3.5 millionexpansion also has the potential to cre-ate new jobs. General ContractorTurnbull Wahlert will oversee the con-

struction project and Perkins Eastman isthe architect. Once completed, the new50-bed short-term unit will be at theforefront for rehabilitation care inCincinnati, offering private rooms withfull, private baths, Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs,cable, DVD players, refrigerators andphones. In addition, specialized pro-gramming and activities will be offeredfor those on the rehabilitation units. Thefinal stage of the construction projectwill be to add an upgraded ambulanceentrance and a dedicated elevator foradmissions and rehabilitation. The pro-jected completion date is expected to bein late 2011.

“During the construction project, noresident rooms will be taken out of serv-ice and all disruptions are being kept toa minimum. There are various officemoves that have taken place, some shortterm and some long term,” said SilverElliott. “But our entire staff is dedicatedto this process and knows it willstrengthen our future. Our vision is thataging be an enriching and fulfillingexperience. This is one way we are mak-ing that a reality.”
