ON THE COVER

The Kagi jewellery label was born in 2006 out of owner and designer, Kat Gee’s desire to create designer jewellery that was bold and simple, using both real gemstones and real pearls. Kagi jewellery is clever jewellery and can be mixed and matched simply by switching a pendant, changing a link, using a gem insert or joining a bracelet to a necklace – endless combinations to suit every occasion. See Kagi bracelet competition page 30.

Welcome to EastLife!

I’m hoping our first monthly edition will give readers a thirst for more because the team here is full of enthusiasm for this new magazine in which we put lifestyle to the fore.

We have tried to cover as many bases as possible in order to keep a wide range of readers captivated. From, fashion, health, beauty and books we look at food, motoring, business and travel. Check out the article on biking in Vietnam; I’ve met Leen and Di Van Duin who are warm, professional hosts with a real sense of fun and adventure.

Also, there are competitions for those who love to be winners (scan the QR code with your smartphone and it will take you to the website so you can enter wherever you are) and a sneak look into the lives of

many local personalities and the celebrities we love.

Of course, that’s just the start. Every month EastLife aims to reveal the very best of living in the East of Auckland including ‘out and about’ photographs from local photographer, Carmen Bird, who’ll be popping into all the top spots – if you have an event let us know. Watch for home and garden ideas – renovating tips too!

EastLife is all about the good life which I know we local residents can attest to – after all that’s why we chose to make our home in this wonderful locality. And, of course, I’m looking forward to giving you my regular spin on the month and what we have in store.

EastLife will be delivered to selected residential areas and businesses

including cafes and waiting rooms or it can be picked up from drop boxes around the district. Alternatively subscribe to the digital version by visiting www.eastllife.co.nz or request a postal subscription ($49 postage annually).

In the meantime, I hope this very first EastLife provides ample reading and gives you all a great deal of pleasure – I know the team and I have had loads of fun putting it together; what’s more we have met some fascinating people along the way. So a big thanks to everyone for their support; now, just enjoy!

Sun, water and a tall ship – what a way to end the working week! And that’s exactly how some 300 people spent a Friday when they took part in this year’s Charity yacht Regatta organised by the Rotary Clubs of Howick and Half Moon Bay.

This year’s event, in which more than 30 yachts took part, started with brunch, followed by an afternoon on the ocean waves and ended with an evening dinner and prize-giving.

The Child Cancer Foundation was the recipient of monies raised from this year’s regatta with more than $1.5 million being raised to date for a wide variety of community groups.

TEN QuESTIONS IN TEN MINuTESwith Toni Street10TEN

are you a reader and what’s the best book you’ve read?

I do read but since having a baby, not as much as I used to. My favourite ‘recent’ read has to be Open by Andre Agassi. I found out so much about what went on behind the scenes in his tennis hey-day. The cost of his success is an unbelievable story.

Who’s your favourite actor and is there a genre of film you dislike?

I don’t like SciFi movies – anything with aliens and uFOs I switch off after 10 minutes. Favourite actor: I just love, love, love Ben Stiller. He’s such a funny man and Meet the Parents gave me such a laugh. I like a love story too but when it comes to comedy you can’t beat Ben Stiller.

What’s your favourite sport and is there any sport you don’t follow?

My favourite sport by far is cricket. I love all formats of the game and never tire of watching it. I’m not a big fan of motorsport but at a pinch I might watch F1 [Formula One racing].

What’s the most challenging part of being a first time parent?

The hardest part is not being paranoid. In the first five nights after bringing our daughter Juliette home I hardly slept. I worried the blanket was covering her face; that she was choking, or that some other disaster

was imminent. The first night she was in her own room I was up and down three or four times. But I’m gradually becoming more relaxed; less fearful.

Tell us one personal thing that is little known to the general public?

People may not know that I have terrible eyesight. My left eye has a negative seven reading and I wear thick glasses at home although on air, and when out, I wear contact lenses.

What’s the first thing you would do if you became Prime Minister?

Probably action a plan to fix our appalling domestic violence problem especially where child abuse is concerned. After having a baby of my own, I’m more aware than ever and while policy is being worked on it’s not happening fast enough.

Who would you say has been an inspiration to you in your career?

Bernadine Oliver-Kerby [TVNZ presenter] I’ve looked up to her in a big way. She has followed a similar career path to my own. She was a netballer, and a sports presenter who successfully handled the crossover from sports to news.

What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?

I’ve had a lot but going to the Beijing Olympics was big for me. The second one was being chosen for my role on Breakfast. I had only been a fill-in so the full time job was huge.

If you were stranded on a desert isle, what item would you want with you?

Probably a photo of my daughter. My husband sends me photos every morning so I don’t miss out on anything. Alone on an island, her image would keep me going.

If you could invite three people to dinner – dead or alive – who would you ask?

Roger Federer, Kate Hudson and Barack Obama. Roger because he is my favourite sportsman on the planet; Kate because she seems like fun, and Barack Obama just because it would be amazing to hear his views on what’s happening in the world.

fIRST IMPRESSIoNS:

Magnanimous – She might justifiably have been extremely annoyed but Dallas graciously waves aside apologies for an overlooked earlier appointment.

Elegant – the beautifully cut, ‘little black dress’ with exquisite jewellery and her big blue eyes adding the sparkle, is a far cry from corporate suit and man-size handbag one might imagine accompanying such a person. Petite and feminine, this company director looks as if she would be at home in an English drawing room pouring tea for foreign diplomats.

Surprising – Dallas Pendergrast may appear far removed from business mogul but it is soon clear that after three plus decades in business, during which time she and husband Ross have built a formidable property portfolio, this is a woman who knows how to succeed even in the toughest times. Importantly, every new venture seems to genuinely delight and excite her.

For almost 38 years Dallas and Ross Pendergrast have been both marriage and business partners, their company Ladstone Holdings Ltd having emerged from an initial car sales

venture to become a multi-million dollar enterprise.

Purchasing, enhancing and on-selling land and buildings has culminated in their most recent acquisition, the former Westfield complex at Pakuranga in December last year.

With Westfield’s management ending on March 31, the centre is now being rebranded Pakuranga Plaza, a name it has previously worn and one which has won overwhelming favour with Plaza retailers.

“Our first shopping centre purchase was Southmall many years ago,” Dallas says.

Then there was Royal Oak shopping centre, which was refurbished and on sold, and more recently, the Rialto Centre in Newmarket, also renovated and split into strata titles.

“Ross takes care of all acquisitions and sales while I take charge of day to day management, and refurbishments; enhancements of any kind that affect the aesthetics,” Dallas says.

“Once we make decisions we tend to act quickly. For example, at Pakuranga Plaza new signage

should be complete shortly and work will begin on both interior and exterior improvements.”

And like any good ‘director’ Dallas will be hands on most days.

“I am always very excited if I can visually enhance a complex. It gives me a real buzz but it’s strictly one

project at a time and right now the Plaza has our full attention. We have great plans for the refurbishment and for refocusing the mall as a community-based centre offering lots of interaction with schools, clubs and other groups.”

Away from the office, Dallas unwinds by escaping from the city to the family’s Waiheke property most weekends – “we were boaties for many years.

“I also like to read, travel, play golf – if there is ever time which isn’t often – and be with my two granddaughters aged five and three years . Our daughter lives nearby so I try to enjoy the family as much as possible.”

Dallas Pendergrast, director, Ladstone Holdings Ltd – the new owner of Pakuranga Plaza (formerly Westfield Pauranga) – gives HELEN PERRy a glimpse of her life.

There’s something that all Rotary Club members have in common – we take action. As community volunteers, we reach out to neighbours in need. We build, support, and organise. We save lives. We work locally and globally.

Around the world and around the corner, the 1.2 million men and women of Rotary:✦ Get involved in their communities✦ Connect with other professionals✦ Share their time and experience with young

But a Rotary Club also brings fun and friendship and a limitless range of opportunities to every member relevant to their preferences and interests in a way that suits their lifestyle and commitments. In addition Rotary is very family-orientated, meaning there are many opportunities for Rotarian’s families to become involved in club activities and the Rotary programme.

Recently establishing a business, not to mention inspiring the ladies as a finalist in CLEO’s Bachelor of the year competition, Mitch certainly is busy; but in cricket and in life, it seems success for this entrepreneur starts at breakfast.

“I’ve been on the paleo diet for a couple of years,” says Mitch. “After my hip surgeries I couldn’t do much and was putting on weight. But the diet helped keep my weight down considerably, and energy-wise it’s awesome!”

The paleo diet, which seeks to replicate eating habits of Palaeolithic man – no preservatives, chemicals and difficult-to-digest foods – became an effective way of fuelling Mitch’s body for the demands of professional sport.

To capitalise on the benefits of paleo, the ‘serial’ performer decided to establish a business, offering opportunities beyond cricket.

“The diet’s about eating whole foods, nothing processed. But it doesn’t allow for grains, and I was a massive cereal eater.

“So, my business partners and I saw

an opportunity to design products making cereals an option.”

Incorporating organic fruit, seeds and raw nuts, Clean Paleo Limited’s cereals are free of preservatives, gluten and artificial flavours.

While helping him stay on track with his diet, the business has also offered Mitch the chance to prove himself in the competitive corporate arena.

“We’re confident the business will take off. People are more conscious about what they eat these days, so we think we’ve hit the market at the right time.

“It’s a good way to keep my mind busy too. Cricket is a testing sport, mentally, so it’s good to think about something else during down time.”

The Auckland university commerce graduate says Clean Paleo is not just a sideline; it’s a challenge, one he hopes will put bread on the table long after stumps is called on his cricketing career.

“I’ve always wanted my own business and to learn about the business world; that was the main reason I went to university. Dad had always

been an advocate of getting a degree so I’d have something to fall back on in case cricket didn’t take off.

“Fortunately it did, but I don’t want to reach a later stage in life and not have enough money to support a family. Building a background away from cricket is important to me.”

Armed with guidance of mentors including former Howick & Pakuranga bowler, Kerry Walmsley, Shane Bond and Brendon McCullum, plus his paleo diet, Mitch says success (and wickets) are ripe for the taking as he seeks a promising cricketing career.

“I want to be the best fast bowler in the world; a major contributor in winning the World Cup for New Zealand.

“Long-term, I want to go down in history as being one of the world’s best and definitely one of the best bowlers for New Zealand.”

Serving up healthy deliveries on the field, or nutritious meals at the table, in business, sport and life, Mitch looks to make every post a winner; not just to make his daily ‘bread’ or line his trophy cabinet. In essence, it’s just how he... ‘bowls’!

Fast bowler’s business spinPrior to his recent injury, it seems everyone was talking about that young man named Mitchell McClenaghan. Recently, JON RAWLINSON discovered, beyond cricket, The Blackcaps’ bowler, from the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club, definitely has a lot on his plate!

The beds are spot on at Huntington Stables, in fact, everything is spot on at this Tuscan-style Cambridge retreat with beautiful rural views and luxury accommodation.

Owners, Neil and Carol Wright, have welcomed many prominent New Zealanders and international guests to their own special corner of the Waikato, spoiling them with welcome treats such as wine, handcrafted chocolates and antipasto platters.

What’s more the fridge and pantry are bursting with fine farm fare – free-range eggs, free-farmed bacon, homemade preserves and marmalade and even Carol’s own handmade muesli crammed with fruit and nuts.

Together with a well equipped kitchen, including wine cabinet and gorgeous Italian-style crockery by a local potter, guests have a self-catering option which just begs to be used. However, for those who

prefer to dine out, a five minute drive into Cambridge, provides access to several restaurants.

With pool, hot tub, sauna, croquet lawn and petanque court, Huntington Stables provides an idyllic escape. Accommodation consists of the North and South Stables, adjoining units, luxuriously appointed with a Tuscan theme and offering the likes of guest robes, exquisite toiletries, fragrant, fresh flowers and many finishing touches that make for a relaxing escape just 90 minutes from Auckland.

And for adventurous types there’s plenty to see and do. Head north for a day in Hamilton – check out the newly opened Classic Car Museum, Hamilton Gardens or a river cruise – south to Tirau for a novel shopping experience; meander down to

Hobbiton at Matamata or take a Sunday country drive to Vilagrad at Ngahinapouri for lunch under the vines. These are just a few local excursions if staying a day or three.

Whether seeking a five-star weekend escape or perhaps a wedding night retreat – newly-weds receive royal treatment – Huntington Stables is special. In addition to the North and South Stables there is also the option of well-equipped and cosy loft accommodation.

Cruising on my bike down the spectacular hillside of Hai Van Pass – English translation, ‘Ocean Cloud Pass’ for the mists that rise from the sea to meet it – I can’t help ruminating on what brings me back cycling in Vietnam and Cambodia for the third time.

Our local guide, Thatch, who studied for eight years to be a Buddhist monk, might say it’s all about karma.

It certainly feels like good karma to be here again, with my wife Diane, leading another bunch of cyclists past the smiles of the Vietnamese people and the ever-changing scenery. Thanks to Thatch, we rarely

encounter other tourists as we cycle our way gently from north to south, through rice paddies and villages.

Or it could be the cuisine? I’ve never eaten so many delicious dishes, especially the famous Vietnamese spring rolls complete with dipping sauces to die for.

We dine at koto in Hanoi, a similar concept to Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant in London. From early beginnings as a sandwich shop, the non-profi t koto is now a 120-seat restaurant staffed primarily by former street children. They are being trained in hospitality as well as essential life skills. Talk about food for thought!

In Hoi An we bike to the fragrant herb garden – Tra Que Herb Village – for an intimate cooking class. Before eating a huge banquet, including the food we have prepared, we are treated to a Vietnamese foot massage – every meal should start this way!

Perhaps part of the charm of cycling

Vietnam is meeting locals close-up when exploring their intriguing country. Children run out to greet us and we have plenty of time to stop, chat and admire newborns while passing by.

On another day we jump off our bikes to join in a traditional, early morning

Good karma (and coffee) on wheels

As a seasoned leader of cycling tours in Vietnam, LEEN VAN DUIN, is as enchanted as ever with this land of warm smiles and ever-changing scenery. Here he provides some insights to a country he has grown to love and admire.

exercise regime (much needed after all the eating!). We visit local farms and even stay overnight with a Vietnamese family in Mekong – an unbeatable and authentic experience.

Or could our enchantment be due to the relative ease and comfort with which our tour unfolds. Our group of bikes is followed by a small air-conditioned coach, supplying cold drinks and ferrying anyone who needs a break.

Of course, cyclists on this kind of trip need a reasonable level of fitness, but the ride is mostly flat and we cover just 30 to 40 kilometres a day with ‘rest and relax’ days in between.

It’s on one of those rest days that we head to a local Hoi An tailor, armed with clothes from home to be copied with amazing precision at fantastic prices. It’s also the spot for cheap yet accurate prescription glasses.

Back at Hai Van Pass, we wind our way down the 21 kilometres then cycle along the flat beach front, past local fishermen with their impressive catches.

Thatch has found the best coffee houses for us to enjoy a cup of the famous Vietnamese coffee, Minh Tam. As I sip the strong, black drink, sweetened with condensed milk, I realise that there isn’t just one thing that keeps pulling me back to this warm and verdant country. It’s the entire, varied experience of cycling through Vietnam.

So, I can only hope my karma brings me back here time and again and that karma will ensure others experience the same.

The heritage, the culture, the majestic architecture! It’s why we’re drawn to Europe, but there’s a flipside to all that history – there’s been a lot of time to build up some of the most confusing road systems in the world!

So what’s the answer? Cruising the major rivers of Europe aboard a luxury river vessel is to enjoy, without doubt, one of the most relaxing and rewarding ‘great tours’ available to the contemporary traveller. Arriving in style into the historical heart of spectacular cities, unhurried, refreshed, and ready to enjoy your destination – this is the ultimate in travel.

Purpose-designed vessels, complete with sumptuous suites, stylish lounges, beauty salons, fine dining and even plunge pools and whirlpools, provide an environment of unrivalled elegance.

Imagine visiting Amsterdam, Cologne, Nürnberg, Vienna and Budapest without the hassle of constantly packing and unpacking your bags.

Just move into your spacious suite, pour a glass of champagne and take a seat on your private balcony to watch the landscape roll by.

Whether you’re in love with the unforgettable cities, or just want the time to absorb the passing scenery at an unhurried pace, touring Europe by river is hard to beat.

Bucking economic trends, local spa pool manufacturer and distributor, Hot Spring Spas has seen a surge in the sales of its mid-priced spa pool range.

While in many areas luxury goods have been showing signs of better days following the lingering stagnate trends of the global financial crisis, managing director of Hot Spring Spas NZ, Dale Paretovich says the

company’s new middle and lower end pool ranges now take up 28% of its New Zealand-wide sales. “Similar to luxury car manufacturers catering to lower price points we, too, have introduced mid and lower end product ranges which are attracting buoyant interest from new spa pool buyers,” he says.

Historically Hot Spring spa pools have targeted the premium end of the

market with top-end componentry and a $20,000 plus price tag.

“Now new spa pool buyers are purchasing a lower spec’d pool but they’re also relying on our quality and service reputation. The pools we sell today, we will still support. in 10 years time; you don’t get that support from other spa pool sellers.”

With its January 2013 sales bettering any month of sales from the past four years, Mr Paretovich says those January sales have boosted a positive financial year for the company. “And, highlighting our on-the-ground dealer

service efforts throughout the country was the fact that this week we were awarded International Dealer of the Year for 2012.”

The award came from global Hot Spring brand owner, Watkins Manufacturing Corporation base in USA. President of Watkins, Steve Hammock, stated that the award to Hot Spring Spas New Zealand highlighted the enthusiasm at store level supported by the expanded product line up and forthright approach to marketing through tough times. As a result more people were stepping into a Hot Spring spa pool.

NZ SPA BUSINESS TURNS UP HEAT ON WORLD MARkETIt’s all bubbles (and merriment) at Hot Spring Spas NZ which has been awarded International Dealer of the Year 2012 beating much larger dealer networks across Europe and around the world.

For Howick photographer, Lisa Harrington, family portraiture is all about turning fleeting moments into lasting, treasured memories.

“As any parent would agree, children grow so fast and in the blink of an eye, they’re moving out of home. We want to capture this special time to create lasting memories for the whole family.”

Lisa says she’s had a lifelong passion for photography – but it wasn’t until 2008 that she finally made a leap of faith, quitting her pharmaceuticals job to work as a photographer full-time.

“At the time I didn’t even own a digital camera. On my final day of work I purchased $10,000 worth of camera equipment and went from there.”

The purchase paid off and for Lisa, it was love at first click. Soon landing a number of wedding jobs, she went on to become a full-time portrait photographer and opened her Howick studio Timeless Images in October 2010.

Three years on, Lisa offers a range of photography services including family portraits, couple photography, maternity and baby photography, graduation photography, corporate portraits and beauty makeovers.

Lisa says she offers three styles of photography: the contemporary studio portrait, a natural outdoors location portrait, and a traditional timeless classic.

“Studio portraits produce clean, crisp images while location shoots add a relaxed vibe and are a great way to add an element of fun for camera-shy children. The images are often very vibrant and end up looking great on canvas.

“Clients can also choose to have their portrait in the timeless classic style, using a more traditional backdrop with the final image printed on textured paper that doesn’t require a glass cover.”

As a fully qualified member of the NZ Institute of Professional Photography, Lisa works with processing and photoshop artists, Shaye Thompson and Vanessa Mealings to create a perfect end-result. Shaye has recently completed a Bachelor of Design while Vanessa holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts Degree majoring in Photography and previously managed the retouching department at the NZ Herald.

Time waits for no oneMemories fade but photographs keep alive the joy, excitement and beauty of those special moments and Timeless Images Photography in Howick, specialises in producing those spontaneous, natural images that capture a look, a turn of the head, a smile.

The Timeless Images studio is based in the Howick Village Mall, behind the information centre on Picton Street. For more information or to make a booking, visit the website www.timelessimages.co.nz or contact Lisa on (09) 950 4675.

About Skin is all about helping clients retain or regain young, healthy looking skin and as a leading specialist in skin care, the clinic offers a wide range of effective treatments. Among those are its Elos treatments renowned for outstanding results.

How is the Elite/Elos system different from other laser systems?

The Elite/Elos system is the number one IPL treatment in the world for rejuvenation, skin tightening and permanent hair reduction.

The Elite/Elos system uses optical energy to heat the hair shaft, combined with radio frequency, which heats and coagulates the follicle itself, but is not affected by skin colour. This technology is a superior method for rejuvenating face, neck, chest, and arm skin.

Elos Skin Rejuvenation

Choosing the right skin care solution for skin rejuvenation was once a confusing and difficult decision but ELOS™ technology has changed everything. Simply put, ELOS™ is a safe, effective and comfortable skin rejuvenation solution which helps:

• Encourage dermal remodelling by stimulating collage.

• Improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

• Reduce size of enlarged pores.• Correct skin imperfections caused

by sun damage.• Fade or dissipate dilated capillaries,

freckles, pigmentation, sunspots.• Remove colour from acne scarring,

scars and stretch marks.• Even out skin tone.• Reduce the redness associated with

rosacea.

About Skin believes everyone deserves a great skin and to make this happen the team provides the latest and most effective treatments at an affordable price.

Great lookingElos Skin Tightening

Would you have a facelift if you didn’t have any downtime, experienced little discomfort and looked natural afterwards? What if there were no scars and your skin continued to improve after your facelift?

Sounds too good to be true? Perhaps not! Recently, the FDA approved the first ever non-invasive IPL for skin tightening via wrinkle reduction.

Unlike conventional IPL this new generation of IPL does not harm the surface of the skin, thus eliminating the need for post treatment care.

The ReFirme system is NOW here at About Skin, it is a non-surgical technique that tightens and renews facial contours by regenerating new collagen fibres that are healthy and strong. Results can last for many years depending on your skin condition and aging processes. This safe, non-invasive procedure is being heralded as the future of cosmetic correction and prevention.

The years have slipped by so fast that Graham Jenkins forgot to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Howick Village Optometrists last year!

His dad Bryan started working in Howick in the 1960’s and today the business is still owned and operated by the family. Generations of Howickians have passed through the doors and this has been one of the more interesting parts of the job for Graham and his wife Frith.

Thorough and extensive eye exams that detect the smallest changes are hard to come by, but the team of professionals at Howick Village Optometrists have been providing these for the past 50 years.

Treating and correcting eye conditions, and providing quality eyewear are among some of the many services this local business offers to the community.

Keeping up to date with new developments, Howick Village Optometrists is still at the top of the eye game. The brand new OCT scanner is an impressive piece of technology, enabling the experts to gain insight into the internal structures of the eye and helping with the monitoring and detection of macular degeneration, glaucoma and a range of other macular issues.

This leading business combines the services of three New Zealand qualified optometrists and two dispensing opticians with cutting edge technology and more than 1400 quality frames from reputable stockists thus providing a service that is second to none.

Customers can expect a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere at Howick Village Optometrists thanks to the friendly, well-trained and fully qualified staff members.

Graham and his team believe everyone deserves to have healthy eyesight they can rely on throughout their lives. It really has a huge impact on people when they move from fuzzy vision into crystal clear vision – it’s as if a fog has lifted, says Graham.

“We recommend regular testing once every couple of years especially if there is a history of eye disease in the family to ensure everything is in good health. It is not always about what our clients can see, but what we can see when we do a complete eye examination and health check.”

As a proudly local, independent, family-owned business, Howick Village Optometrists strives to bring a warm, friendly and personal service to the community.

Clients of Peak Pilates in Burswood Drive may well think they’ve found a ‘pot of gold at the end of the rainbow’ when treated by new physiotherapist and Pilates instructor James Colgan, fresh out from Ireland.

The Irishman brings with him extensive experience originating from an active sports background.

“I understand what it’s like to love sport, and how important it is to maintain a balanced fi tness regime to help prevent injury and to enhance performance.”

Spurred by this realisation, James went on to work in the health sector – for Irish football teams, the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, and private clinics in Australia.

Then, during a visit to New Zealand, he discovered Peak Pilates & Physiotherapy. “The holistic philosophy of Peak Pilates really appealed to me.

“It’s long-term, hands-on, preventative care for people who are motivated and want to take their health into their own hands.”

Not just a physiotherapist, James is also skilled in acupuncture and has just completed an intensive Pilates course, Stability Plus, in addition to the standard Pilates course.

Specially tailored and developed by Peak Pilates, the Stability Plus course is a blend of successful methods, both new and old. It is recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as well as Physiotherapy NZ.

A strong advocate of dual physio and Pilates exercise, James says Pilates is ideal for strengthening the core muscles, developing stability and improving fl exibility, balance and co-ordination.

“It’s a combination of achievable exercise and a challenging workout performed in a safe, monitored environment.

“Pilates is ideal for post-operative recovery, injury rehab and is remarkable for relieving or rectifying back, neck and shoulder pain.

“Many patients leave feeling renewed and pain-free with

improved joint mobility and muscle balance that makes a world of difference to daily life.”

A low-impact form of exercise, Pilates provides many benefi ts ranging from posture correction to improved mental concentration and focus.

There are more than 600 Pilates exercises suitable for all ages with sessions involving stretching and balancing. Proper breathing patterns are also taught.

An ACC-registered provider

with no doctor’s referral required, Peak Pilates & Physiotherapy offers one-on-one sessions, with a qualifi ed physiotherapist who prescribes individualised mat and equipment-based programmes after assessing the total body including spinal stability, muscle strength and fl exibility.

New talent for Peak Pilates

James Colgan with a patient.

Teaching children how to grow and prepare food, could be the key to addressing the ‘growing’ problem of obesity worldwide, says Jamie Oliver.

“Recently we had headlines saying the UK is the ‘fat man of Europe’ because our obesity numbers are the worst in the region,” he explains. “We have something like a quarter of kids starting school who are overweight. By the time they leave primary, that figure rises to around one-third.

“We have a worsening problem with obesity in many countries. One of the main causes is that people are eating the wrong types of food because they don’t know how to cook tastier, more nutritious food.”

Through initiatives, including his

Kitchen Garden Project, which helps schools build facilities while providing training and resources to teach children how to grow and cook, Jamie says nutritional choices begin in the garden.

“We have two school kitchen gardens in the UK. Teachers and parents say all the kids want to do is to cook and eat what they’ve grown! It’s an absolute joy watching kiddies cooking, growing and learning about things that will help them lead healthier, happier lives.

“People who have attended the classes say their lives have changed – they’re losing weight, feeling more confident, and often making a few

mates on the course as well.”

While cooking up solutions to slim the obesity problem requires community support, Jamie says government assistance is “massively important.”

“Just over the water in Australia, governments in Queensland and Victoria are very pro-active. But it would be great if more woke up to the problems we’re facing, and started to work towards a solution. Businesses

could do more too – keeping workforces healthy and motivated is surely their dream, and what better way than teaching people to cook?”

Jamie says by learning about gardening and cooking, families gain essential, grass-roots knowledge. “If you have the basic knowledge about food and nutrition, then you can feed yourself and your family better. People can also save money because they’re not spending loads on processed meals and takeaways.”

Healthy eating no raw deal

If you’ve got it, flaunt it; but if you’re known as the ‘fat man of Europe’, it’s best to reconsider dietary choices as celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver, recently explained to JON RAWLINSON.

For a chance to win Jamie’s latest recipe book, Jamie’s 15 Minute Meals see page 15.

Hailed by many as the Queen of Pop, the MTV sensation has created an eclectic range capturing the essence of her career which spans three decades.

Like a chameleon, Madonna’s image changes as rapidly as her music, shifting from sexy siren and glamorous pin-up girl to rebellious pop punk and diva – and her shoes are no different.

Divided into two distinct looks – Truth; and Dare – the Truth theme is that of sophisticated chic, and ‘Dare’ just says it all: bold and brazen.

Boots have always played a part in the Material Girl’s star and sex appeal, and, naturally, they are at the forefront of the collection.

Ranging from chic ankle boots to sexy thigh highs, statement platforms and single soles, these boots make the perfect accessory this winter.

Studs and spikes further elevate to dizzying heights – one particular high platform, lace-up boot in Spanish calf sports more than 2000 studs a pair!

One of Madonna’s signature styles, the pointed toe, has made a comeback and features prominently

in the collection, giving a touch of polished elegance.

Playful peep toes, dressy pumps and sling-back heels lend a touch of femininity to the line and come in shades such as red, nude, white, and, of course, black – she is the Bad Girl of music, after all.

However, this is not black as we know it. Enhanced by gold trim, lace, sequins, and leather – totally outrageous, spunky and sometimes sophisticated – this is black reinvented.

Now available at Hannahs and Pulp, the Truth or Dare collection will also feature laser cut uppers, metallic lace fabrics and prints hand painted by an artist from Brooklyn, New York.

In Madonna’s shoesPop, cultural and fashion icon, Madonna, steps it up with her new line of shoes, Truth or Dare, now available in New Zealand.

FORCES OF NATURE BY KAGIKagi is proud to announce the release of its beautiful new Forces of Nature collection. Kagi’s mix of agates, turquoise, freshwater pearls and catseye create an earth-inspired palette in gorgeous colours including pearly white, emerald green, smoke, fiery red, turquoise and deep violet. heading to Auckland Airport for a business trip to windy wellington but dreaming of a South pacifi c holiday? Then stop off at Szimpla Gastro Bar where tropical dreams come true without leaving the country.

That’s because this cleverly designed bar and restaurant, which has won plaudits for its retro design with 70’s interior, has developed a semi-al fresco courtyard which would be totally at home on a Fijian isle.

inside, kiwiani dominates taking patrons back to another era. Outside,

vibrant anthuriums, cordylines and bromeliads are accentuated by cool greens of staghorns, hostas and ponga plus a living wall, making the courtyard a oasis just metres from new Zealand’s most active runway.

The talents of a skilful taxidermist are also evident in the addition of exotic caged birds and a magnifi cent peacock whose iridescent colours add to the overall vibrancy.

The green fi ngers of howick man, Brendan meyer, are responsible for this verdant retreat. “i was inspired by the tranquil garden bars of Singapore and the idea here was to create a feeling of the outdoors while still providing covered comfort.”

without a doubt, Szimpla’s secret garden is the place to kick back after a busy working day. Just imagine a mai Tai in hand, a tasting platter of wild mushroom risotto balls and kikorangi blue bruschetta topped with roasted walnuts, watercress and manuka honey and a little live music.

Also known for craft beers from the hawkes Bay, Szimpla is szimply the best on Auckland’s fl ight path.

Tropical paradises are hard to come by in concrete jungles but hElEn pERRy discovered a lush retreat with no need to fl y the country.

Feathers, fl owers and furnishings from another time combine to make the covered courtyard at Szimpla Gastro Bar a great place for socialising and events.

“Good morning everybody!” many a new Zealander will still remember the famous Aunt daisy catch-cry heard daily on ZB radio from the 1930s to the 1960s.

Out came pads and pens as listeners jotted down her recipes and cooking advice, much of which became the basis of several cookbooks.

however, it is her last, The Aunt Daisy Cookbook, complied after her death by daughter Barbara, which is, perhaps, the most well-known.

now, 40 years after her fi nal radio broadcast, the legacy of Aunt daisy (maud Basham) lives on with the release of a new book, Preserving with Aunt Daisy.

A collection of more than 200 of her most-loved recipes for jams, jellies, pickles and chutneys, this book illustrates Aunt daisy at her fi nest.

in addition to everyday favourites, including tomato relish and strawberry jam, more unusual, yet easy to follow, recipes are also featured. Check out pickled pears, choko chutney and pumpkin jam.

what’s more, all royalties from this book will benefi t the Barbara Basham Trust for medical Research in new Zealand.

morning, noon or night, this book is sure to come in handy to those looking to preserve their home-grown garden delights. well laid out, the recipes are simple with clear instructions – nothing too sticky here.

without a doubt this is a book which

encourages modern cooks to turn their hand to making the most of their gardens with very little diffi culty.

here’s the perfect opportunity for readers to have their cake and eat it too!

Love, Bake, Nourish – Healthier Cakes, Bakes & Desserts Full of Fruit and Flavour by Amber Rose is sure to get a rise out of readers keen to look on the lighter side of baking.

This beautiful collection of ‘healthier’ cakes and more, comes from an author and ‘baker’ who is proud to have made cakes for Stella mcCartney, Sadie Frost, Jude law and kate moss.

Amber Rose believes cakes can look and taste wonderful by using ingredients such as fruit and honey,

as well as ancient fl ours – buckwheat, spelt and chestnut – rather than traditional, processed fl ours and sugars.

in Love, Bake, Nourish, she covers a multitude of sweet treats – cakes, puddings, meringues, custards and compotes, small bakes, pies and crumbles.

The book contains recipes such as spiced carrot cake with a crumbly topping; berry good fairy cakes – perfect for kids – coconut & passionfruit tart and mince pies made with a light, orange zest pastry.

Amber created this collection of healthier treats because of growing evidence which suggests that it is sugar, and not fat, which is making waistlines increase.

By using natural sugars – including

ones which are lower Gi – she knows she can have a treat without feeling too guilty.

Over summer SodaStream set kiwis a challenge – to create delicious, original cocktails using SodaStream machines and syrups.

kiwi imaginations fizzed and the response was overwhelming. with a huge range of SodaStream syrups to choose from, there were some outrageous combinations submitted – most worked, some didn’t!

First prize was awarded to mary legaspi for her ‘dirty harry’ cocktail – a delicious combination of gin/vodka, lemon, honey and SodaStream lemonade. Other notable entries involved hot chillies, yoghurt, and most likely a hangover! One thing’s

for sure; there was no shortage of creativity.

what these innovators proved was just how easy it is to make cocktails

at home using

a SodaStream machine. For example, take some mint and limes from the garden, add a little rum, sugar and ice then top with bubbly water straight from a SodaStream machine – an easy and delicious mojito, all from the comfort of one’s own kitchen.

And for further inspiration why not try mary’s winning cocktail.

what goes on behind closed doors, when the lights are out? well, with the new Samsung, four-door refrigerator, actually quite a lot!

Teaming up with SodaStream, Samsung has developed a new refrigerator that does more than the average chiller, instantly producing sparkling or chilled water and ice – with the push of a button.

Chris Bremner, from SodaStream new Zealand, says consumers can now

easily enjoy fresh, sparkling water, saving money on store-bought soft drinks, space in the fridge and the environment, all at the same time.

“it makes it easy for consumers to cater to everybody’s preferences – whether it’s chilled water or three different levels of sparkling water.

“not only can people choose their water carbonated – they can also choose how carbonated it is – a choice you certainly don’t get with

store-bought soft drink,” he says.

Consumers can select from three levels of carbonation for their sparkling water, meaning less bottles clogging up the fridge, and ultimately destined for landfills. in addition, this fridge features an ice master ice-maker, high efficiency lEd lighting and Twin Cool plus technology, to keep food fresher for longer.

The Samsung four-door refrigerator is available now.

Colour slides into the home this autumn with sassy citrus shades taking top honours but there’s nothing like versatile neutrals teamed with a sense of tradition to bring harmony into a home. Where decor focus is on classic elegance, interiors store, Scene, in East Tamaki offers three items with an emphasis on the exotic plus a contemporary lighting option where minimalism calls for a touch of pizzazz.

A stately, Grecian-style, two-storey masonry building Elizabeth Bay House overlooks pretty Arthur McElhone Reserve to the harbour beyond.

Once set among 54 acres of gardens, subdivision after subdivision dramatically reduced the property and today the grounds are miniscule. If it weren’t for McElhone Reserve, across the road (originally an expansive lawn and part of the estate) this impressive building would be engulfed by suburbia.

Designed by architect John Verge, and built between 1835 and 1839 for Alexander Macleay, then colonial secretary of New South Wales, the house is a superb example of colonial architecture.

In this instance, Verge looked to the Greek revival style which had grown out of 18th century neoclassicism and rediscovery of the beautiful classical forms of ancient Greece.

Unfortunately, during the costly building exercise, Macleay lost his post, putting a strain on finances. Subsequently the house wasn’t habitable until 1839. Financial woes continued. By late 1844, the house was mortgaged with many costs being covered by Alexander’s son William. After Alexander died in 1848, William virtually ignored maintenance until his death in 1865.

Though neglected, it remained within Macleay family ownership until 1911 when it was sold on but therein lies not just another story but several stories until it was eventually declared an historic building in 1959.

Restoration was agreed on in the 1960s and in 1975 the house was placed into the Elizabeth Bay House Trust. It opened to the public in 1977.

In the entrance hall Greek revival detailing in the Australian cedar architraves, plaster cornice and a lovely ceiling rose with waterleaf motif and laurel leaves, is impressive.Other ground floor rooms include a tastefully furnished dining room with magnificent chiffonier in Louis revival

style and a charming breakfast room with bay window plus an impressive chimney piece of grey St Anne’s marble from Belgium. The central domed saloon is still regarded as one of the finest examples of Australian colonial architecture.

Alexander Macleay valued both books and his natural history collection of butterflies and moths. These make the library a revelation especially when one learns some 4000 volumes, many extremely valuable, were sold at auction when the estate was in financial difficulties.

In the drawing room another marble chimney piece, mid-1800s-style furniture and lavish, swagged curtains provide a sense of formality.

Access to the upper level is via a graceful, cantilevered staircase of Marulan sandstone, its curving sweep, together with the height of the dome, exuding grandeur. This leads to the circular upper hall with elegant archways, bedrooms, maid’s room, morning room and storage. At the other extreme, the cellars encompass the same floor area as the ground floor.

An above ground kitchen wing is long gone but the cellars with cask room, larder, dairy, coal storage and other storage rooms remain. A video, with actors portraying the main characters, recalls the house in its prime. It runs continuously in one cellar room.

An hour at Elizabeth Bay House might just do it, but linger longer if possible. This stately building is one of many fine Sydney homes open for viewing. www.hht.nsw.gov.au

Grand step back in timeQuick trips to Sydney are often about retail therapy and dining out. But our Aussie neighbour offers more than just a trawl through shops and foodhalls. Those with an eye for architecture and a penchant for the past may, like HELEN PERRY, find a visit to Elizabeth Bay House, near Kings Cross, a pleasant step back in time.

Elizabeth Bay House originally sat amongst 54 acres of manicured gardens. Today, public park McElhone Reserve across the road is the last reminder of the once substantial estate.

Not anymore; new season hues indicate plenty of warmth and movement and there’s a wealth of compelling palettes to give insipid interiors a real lift.

Homeowners seeking a complete change should look to the likes of Dulux, Resene and Benjamin Moore (to name a few) whose new season colour charts have ensured winter 2013 is all about dramatic movement.

For example, those who think blue a somewhat cool colour, will find this year’s use of vigorous tones, teamed with earthy oranges or sunny yellows, will look hot in any environment!

Combining purples and plum with orange or even chilli red will achieve a contemporary effect to appeal to Bohemian souls while fuchsia shades, again teamed with big blues add a fun-loving effect to rooms.

But don’t despair it’s not all about forceful interiors. For the romantics, toned down shades of orange-based pinks and softer, murky blues will satisfy a need for calm.

And, if this winter is predominantly about stimulating colours with a sense of adventure, there is relief for those who prefer a whisper quiet backdrop with just a dash of colour.

Those sticking to smoky greys, and natural earth tones, with just a hint of pastel, should use the rise in coloured florals to add some character – cushions, drapes or upholstery – or add a dash of apple green to give a pretence of boldness without losing any of the desired soothing effect.

Clash of the Titans– GIANT-SIzED COLOURS COME TOGETHER IN BOLD ARRAY

Autumn makeovers in the home are all about colour – strong colour if you are bold enough to go with the powerful blue/orange/purple/plum tones that abound and were once thought to clash.

Elegant yet practical fixtures and fittings are an essential part of every kitchen and new innovations in hardware, benchtop materials and storage solutions are emerging every day.

Jag Kitchens’ director Malcolm McLagan recommends compiling a scrapbook or virtual board of favourite styles and design and ideas and exploring websites too.

“But inevitably, the wealth of information may become overwhelming,” he says. “That’s when our designers can really help homeowners sort through their wish list, narrow down choices and discover design features they may never have known existed.

“Importantly, we can show them how to make better use of space, improve on existing design or layouts and determine whether added building work needs to be done.”

Malcolm says not all materials are created equal and the Jag team will explain differences in materials such as those used for benchtops and cabinetry. Advice on costs will also help clients to make the right choice to suit needs and budget.

Specialising in custom-sized kitchens designed to exactly fit the room without resorting to filler panels, Jag Kitchens has its own manufacturing plant and also uses a sophisticated 3D computer design programme to show clients beforehand exactly how their new kitchen will look.

Jag Kitchens designs and builds to all budgets and their advice and design service is FREE OF CHARGE.

Visit www.jagkitchens.co.nz for more information on a wide range of materials and design options or to see more kitchen examples.

Planning a new kitchen is exciting but it can be daunting too especially when it comes to the multitude of choices on the market. At JAG KITCHENS a professional and skilled team can advise and guide clients so the whole process is as cost-effective and stress-free as possible.

Escaping the rat race to a quiet corner of the world does not necessarily mean enduring hours of travelling with a child’s foot incessantly hitting the back of your seat.

Forgetting the ‘plane’ truth, rather than shipping out, Tadeusz Siankowski instead resorted to shaping his own slice of paradise to create a garden oasis in a Remuera cul-de-sac.

“Everything is so vast these days, so it’s good to escape somewhere. But you don’t need to go overseas to find a beautiful place to relax,” he says.

“I think a garden should literally be a ‘living’ room, where we can unwind or do a bit of work. Normally, when I’m out in the garden, I’ll be doing something. Even if I’m working, it’s a very therapeutic, de-stressing place.”

Originally training as a landscape designer in his native Poland, Tadeusz traded pruning shears for scissors following his move to New zealand, establishing Noise Hairdressing in Howick.

When purchasing his property nine years ago, he knew a little trimming in the right places could make a world of difference to his modest, sloped section.

“The garden was such a blank canvas, I knew I could do something with it. I wanted to make good use of space and develop a resort-type garden, minus the swimming pool; I’m not very keen on swimming pools and wouldn’t be left with much of a garden if we installed one!”

When it comes to relaxation, he says size doesn’t matter.

“Regardless of how big the area, anyone can have a beautiful courtyard garden. To see how the most can be made of limited space, it’s important to go around other gardens and see what people are doing, then turn that extra bit of space available into an extra room... and be happier!”

A more in the garden

When a Howick hairstylist first observed his new Remuera backyard, he became a hairdresser on fire, and promptly set about making a big Noise in a quiet suburban garden, as EastLife reporter JON RAWLINSON recently discovered.

Hello. I am just recovering from a ‘technograine’. Of course, I made it up. Doesn’t everybody? I mean, over a billion people hoped that the ‘gangnam style’ was... the ‘answer’. It was. For chiropractors! But worser, a copy-cat variation, known as the ‘Harlem Shake’, has just shattered our tranquillity.

It began life in the USA in May 2012 and went viral from Queensland, Australia in February 2013. The

chiropractors are orgasmic. Well, we had Chubby Checker with ‘The Twist’ (yes I have almost healed, thank you) in 1960, and the ‘Charleston craze’ of 1925 (which is much like... The Harlem Shake).

I’m looking for something of substance, in this ‘flighty, fractured, frustrating’ world. It has to be sexy too, you understand. It must actually enhance people, performance and production. I believe, that the heart

of it should be centred upon, ‘pride’. Sadly, it went missing years ago... sniff. Have you seen it?

My model will take about three minutes. It must have music, of course. I nominate ‘In the Mood’ made famous by the Glenn Miller Orchestra in the 1940s (when ‘pride’ was still alive...). Today’s youngies, who hate organisation, might prefer the ‘boogie woogie’. Oh no. Obesity kills that idea.

One scene can be in a family home, where the family are actually present, like at the dinner table. Or in a workplace, where people display pride in their appearance,

ethic, enthusiasm, conversation (i.e. mumbling-plus), their work environment, offering ideas and solutions through dynamic camaraderie.

It will feature interaction, smiles (still optional nowadays) and a culture with messages like... ‘together we triumph’ and ‘excellence is exhilarating’.

Can we choreograph pride? Sure can! I would like to. But, we have to re-discover it. Our first task is, to deal to... mediocrity! Any takers? Cheers.

Excuse me. I am looking for ‘Pride’ – DID IT COME THROUGH HERE?

Tough economic times have seen many New zealanders tighten their purse strings and look for ways to cut household costs.

In her recently released book, Pig Tits & Parsley Sauce, Lyn Webster, shows readers how to reduce shopping bills, free up hard-earned dollars, become more self-sufficient and reduce the household’s carbon footprint.

In fact, most people will be stunned at the wealth of information in a book

that proves they can shop smarter, make and grow their own food, reduce household waste, recycle, set goals and budget successfully.

What’s more, the forethought this clever author – city girl turned sharemilker – first put into turning her failing financial life around and then creating a successful new website business is inspiring.

In fact, her website www.pigtitsandparsleysauce.co.nz saw

more than a quarter of a million hits in the two years after launching.

So, for anyone seeking ways to slash grocery bills, save money, enhance health and well being and live more eco-friendly lives, Pig Tits & Parsley Sauce is the book to buy.

• Pig Tits & Parsley Sauce, by Lyn Webster. Published by Penguin Group (Nz). RRP $25 Available at all good bookstores.

Even with the most detailed scope of work, two quotes are never the same so, finding the best match means having confidence in the way in which quotes are presented and recognising whether they are clear and definitive in what they include.

We all know cheapest is not always best yet we’ve all been guilty of purchasing something cheap only to find we got what we paid for. In the building game, quality is best portrayed as something that provides added value, whilst enhancing looks and integrity.

You may ask, “how can a builder’s quote for a bathroom renovation that is $3000 dearer than another quote, be better value?”

Well, in some cases it may not! Most builders will use more or less the same materials – gib board, tiles, a bath, taps etc, or do they? And how can they be so far apart on price?

It’s simple really. Quality. Using quality materials and professional, trusted contractors comes at a price.Professionalism and trust are the first things to look for when employing a builder. The way he presents himself in dress, manner and attitude are a reflection of how he will construct and manage your build.

Obviously, service comes at a cost; the question is, to what level is the consumer willing to pay for quality products and service.

For example, compare two different return airfares on the same plane from Auckland to London.

Remember, the end result is to deliver the passengers from A to B yet a ticket flying economy class will cost around $2500 whereas a ticket flying first class will cost around $10,000. The difference is in the quality of travel and the service.

Whether it’s a seat on the plane or the bath you relax in on a Friday night after a hard week at work, be prepared to pay and enjoy the luxury of choosing quality over price.Remember to read your contract terms and conditions. Be clear on what you are buying and never be afraid to ask. Nobody wants to end up with something they didn’t expect!

Nick Neben – Smith & Sons

There has been a lot in the media of late regarding the pace of the residential real estate market and although sale volumes are not usually high here in East Auckland, we are hitting new highs in sale prices.

Without being too accountant-like, an easy way to broadly track the market is to track the median sale price. The Real Estate Institute issues all the figures each month and our local area is the “Eastern beaches”.

In August 2007 we peaked at a median of $583,750, and just over a year later in September 2008 we reached a bottom of $475,000. Although we came close in late 2009, it took until February 2012 before we bettered our August 2007 peak with a median of $600,000.

Looking at a graph, 2012 was a year of peaks and hollows of medians rising to $641,000 at its best in November.

The February 2013 result has just come in at a new record high of

$668,000. This is 11% higher than February 2012 and 40% higher than the September 2008 bottom.

Economists have put the price rises down to a lot of factors – the main being the low level of new homes being built since the onset of the global financial crisis and the relatively low cost of mortgage monies - on this economists further predict the chances remain slim that Nz interest rates will rise in the next few months and the most likely timing for a rise in the official cash rate is either very late this year or more probably in the first half of 2014.

On the flip side, the low returns on money in the bank has driven investment buyers back into the residential market.

Another big factor driving prices is simply the old supply and demand equation. There seems to be an unrelenting number of buyers all chasing too few listings.

For fi ve decades the 911 has been the heart of the Porsche brand, inspiring car enthusiasts the world over since its debut at the Frankfurt IAA International Automotive Show in September 1963.

Few other cars can look back on such a long tradition and continuity; more than 820,000 Porsche 911s have been sold, making it the most successful sports car in the world.

Equally at home on the race track as the road, a good two thirds of Porsche’s 30,000 race victories to date were notched up by the 911.

The 911 won the hearts of sports car enthusiasts from the outset. Its air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine

delivered 128hp (94kW), giving it an impressive top speed of 131mph (210km/h).

The Porsche 911 became more and more powerful as displacement increased, initially to 2.2 litres (1969) and later to 2.4 (1971).

The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 of 1972 with 207hp (152kW) engine and weighing less than 1000kg remains the epitome of a dream car to this day. Its characteristic ‘ducktail’ was the world’s fi rst rear spoiler on a production car.

One of the most important milestones in the 911 evolution was the 1974 unveiling of the fi rst Porsche 911 Turbo with a three-litre 256hp

(188kW) engine and enormous rear spoiler.

To celebrate the 911’s half century Porsche will host a raft of international events that include sending an authentic 1967 model 911 on a world tour. Fans can follow the car’s progress at porsche.com/follow-911

Team McMillan BMW of Newmarket has again proved its motoring pedigree being recognised by BMW New Zealand as the leading BMW dealership in the country.

The award was recently presented by BMW New Zealand managing director Nina Englert to dealer principal, Ian Gibson, as recognition of the dealership’s performance across a variety of customer-focused criteria and key performance indicators.

“BMW is the number one selling premium car brand in New Zealand and around the world, so it’s indeed an honour to be recognised with this prestigious award,” Mr Gibson said.

“Many of the key criteria relate to customer experience at the dealership, which is something we have worked hard to raise to a level commensurate with representing a premium brand.

“We believe we offer a premium service, a fact refl ected in positive customer feedback.”

BMW enjoyed a record year in New Zealand in 2012, so the race to be the best amongst the nine dealers nationwide was a fi ercely contested battle.

“I’m fortunate to have fantastic staff here and can put our success down to the fact we listen to our customers

and in turn strive to over-achieve in this area,” said Mr Gibson. “People expect particular things of their dealership experience as a matter of course so, it’s doubly rewarding when we can add that ‘surprise and delight’ to their interaction with the staff here.”

He added the challenge now existed for Team McMillan BMW to build on its achievement and create a legacy of success into the future.

to WhangamataCool cars, happy people and rock ‘n’ roll; Whangamata was party central late last month when the 2013 Sony Beach Hop came to the popular Coromandel township.

A week-long and mind-blowing, cool celebration of the ‘50s and ‘60s, every year the festival attracts 1000 registered vehicles, with an estimated 2000 that just roll in to be part of the spectacle. More than 50,000 people attended over the five days last year, and 2013’s edition was bigger still.

The fun started Wednesday with a ‘Warm Up’ cruise to Waihi, when the main street was closed for a car show, rock ‘n’ roll bands, dancing, and a retro fashion show. Thursday had a cruise to Tairua for a beach party, then Friday was the biggie: the Castrol Edge Thunder Cruise to Onemana Beach.

Whangamata looked like small town USA on Saturday when around 1000 cars and motorbikes paraded through the main street, then parked

at Sony Beach Hop’s various display areas. Bands played at cafes, bars and out on the streets, barbecues sizzled, and spectators wandered amongst some of the best cars in New Zealand.

A Nostalgia Fair on Sunday brought Australasia’s biggest hot rod and rock show to a close, and peace and quiet returned as more than a thousand V8s burbled out of town.
