ON THE COVER

Crowned Miss Universe 1983, after winning the Miss New Zealand title, Lorraine Downes will be remembered by many locals as the beautiful Pakuranga teenager who made history with her pageant wins. After a modelling career she eluded the celebrity limelight for many years. Then, in 2006, Lorraine re-emerged and won the NZ version of TV reality show, Dancing with the Stars. EastLife caught up with the girl from Pakuranga. See story page 9

Hi everyone,

I cannot express just how thrilled I am by the response to our first EastLife magazine which hit the streets early in April. It was so successful we have added a further eight pages to the May issue and again it is packed with great competitions, a wide range of articles to suit various tastes plus the latest on new products, fashion collections, cosmetic releases and more.

In particular, I hope readers enjoy our cover story – 10 Question in 10 Minutes with the very beautiful Lorraine Downes – a former Miss New Zealand and Miss Universe 1983 – see story page 9.

During this past month the EastLife team managed to take time out for a celebratory launch party hosted

by Highland Park Shopping Centre at French restaurant La Casserole in the heart of the complex. Having dined there earlier in the year and thoroughly enjoyed the French-style menu, I was both surprised and delighted with the sumptuous array of finger food prepared and served to our guests. Everyone was talking about the eclectic and appetising mix of Asian and European fare. The restaurant’s talented crew certainly did us proud.

Amazingly, I also managed a short caravan sojourn to Raglan during April and discovered a seaside village which charmed me almost as much as our own wonderful Howick. It was a fun escape with shopping and dining high on our list of priorities but the weekend wasn’t without a few minor calamities. Read about our adventures on pages 20 and 21.

Finally, as we enter the last phase of autumn, I am sure most readers are making the most of still warm temperatures even though long overdue April showers swept in to give gardens and farmland a drenching. That said, I do hope we are in for a mild winter and a chance to make the most of new season fashion looks – such great colours it would be a shame not to show them off around the town.

See you next month, take care

Off to great start

mid morning at Stockade Hill in Howick. Representatives from a large number of community groups and organisations, together with the public, supported Howick RSA members in remembering those who

fell at Gallipoli during the First World War and honouring all servicemen and women who died at or returned from the two world wars and other conflicts. Photographer WAyNE MARTIN was on hand to

as an image consultant, who is also a former Miss nz and Miss universe, do people have unreal or extremely high expectations of the advice you give them?

Obviously, clients make contact with me because they want advice on their image so our relationship begins with them trusting me and my advice. I have been an image consultant since the 80’s and understand how clients feel throughout this magic process. Naturally, clients want a positive result; they trust me, and I don’t think I’ve ever had an unsatisfied client. If I felt a client expected something I couldn’t deliver, I would be honest and tell them I couldn’t help.

Would you encourage young women to participate in a nz beauty pageant today?

Personally, I think pageants are outdated. When I competed in them, they were the thing to do, especially if you wanted a modelling career. But today, if young women want to be models they can enter modelling competitions. However, in saying that, pageants can be fun; a way to develop confidence in performing on stage, and a way to travel if you go on to an international contest.

Did you enjoy/participate in ballroom dancing before Dancing with the Stars and if not did your success inspire a desire to dance more often, if only on a social basis?

I had never done any ballroom dancing before DWTS. However, prior to the show, I had been taking Argentinean Tango lessons in Wellington as a social hobby but that’s very different to ballroom tango. I absolutely love Argentinean Tango and don’t dance it nearly enough. It’s on my to do list again!

how did growing up in Pakuranga influence your outlook on life if at all?

I was very blessed to grow up in a close, loving family. My memories of living in Pakuranga are great – school, friends, sporting activities. I always felt safe and life was relaxed.

next year you turn 50 what are your thoughts about reaching that milestone and your expectations of the future?

Honestly, next year is just another birthday, I feel like I am the age I should be. yes, I was born in 1964, so that makes me 50, no big deal. But when you say 50, it does bring a couple of things to mind. My Dad died at 54 and that was way too young, and if I live to say, 75, that means I only have 25 more years on earth, and that’s not a lot! As for my expectations of the future – through life experiences, I am learning to live in the now; it’s a good way to live. you really treasure what you have and who is in your life, and not worry about the future.

What’s your favourite sporting or leisure activity and after such strong associations with both rugby and cricket do you ever tire of them?

This is kind of embarrassing. People think that I am interested in rugby and cricket but this is so far from the truth! I have no real interest in either, never have, never will. I love watching the Australian Open and Wimbledon, so it’s tennis for me. My daughter is also a passionate ballet, contemporary, and jazz dancer, so dance is my absolute favourite sporting activity to watch. And what do I like to do? I love walking amongst nature (beach or bush), yoga and when I have more time, dancing Argentinean Tango!

Tell us one thing about you that is little known to the general public?

Because of my past as a beauty queen/model, people think that I lead a glamorous life but I don’t. I am

a down to earth person who loves family, nature and being around both of those things, not the public, jet-setting lifestyle. My favourite clothes are jeans, t-shirts and flat shoes, not ballgowns and high heels.

What’s the first thing you would do if you became Prime Minister?

I would put into primary schools, a syllabus teaching children to connect with their inner being; to learn to love who they are, to know that they are special and unique. Our children are our future, and if we can teach children the power of positive thinking from a young age, self esteem will help them develop into

positive and peaceful people who know how to treat others with love and respect.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what item would you most like to have with you?

My ipod with my favourite music.

If you could invite three people to dinner – dead or alive – who would you ask?

My Dad, Jean (my closest friend who passed away last year), and Michael Buble who would entertain us!

Written and directed by former Howickian, Brendan Donovan, ‘Gazza Snell’ depicts a local family coping with the trauma of a severe injury to its youngest child, set amidst the backdrop of many familiar Howick landmarks. In fact, the Snell family lived on Pickwick Parade, the very same street where I grew up!

Since the film’s release, Brendan has been busy fostering the ‘hopes and dreams’ of a new generation, teaching drama direction to post-graduate and masters students at Auckland University’s film school; but he hasn’t let movie-making slide either!

“If you’re teaching, you’re learning – that’s one of the greatest things about it,” Brendan says, “I’m working with very small classes of committed students and it’s great being able to help them express themselves through film. We have some fine storytellers among us, and, in general, New Zealanders want to see their stories on screen.”

Brendan says helping to develop the talents of young Kiwi film-makers has been very rewarding.

“It’s extremely important for our culture that we see our own stories about our own people up on screen. It helps define us, and helps us see ourselves more clearly. We can’t just watch American and British shows; we’ll start to have an identity crisis!”

Brendan began teaching at the university last year. However, he is still pursuing other film-making projects.

“The teaching is part time, so I’m still writing and directing,” he says.

“I currently have several feature films in private and publicly funded development.

“The NZ Film Commission has funded, Blue Smoke, for development, a script originated by former New Zealand Prime Minister and current US ambassador, Mike Moore.

“I’m the writer on this project, which is about Maori entertainers in Sydney in the ’60s and ’70s. I have also been funded by NZ on Air and TVNZ to develop an original TV drama series, but that’s early days yet.”

Brendan says identity is crucial to the development of local stories, his own stories having been influenced by his East Auckland upbringing.

“I had a pretty happy childhood out East, and when you’re happy, you can imagine great things. I did a lot of imagining on the beaches, in the bush and out on the gulf. It set me up to use my imagination to fund my life, which is truly satisfying for a creative person.”

While the glitz and glamour of the film industry abroad may be a draw for many an aspiring film-maker, Brendan says he still calls New Zealand home.

Over Easter weekend, Kiwi film, The Hopes and Dreams of Gazza Snell, took to the small screen for the first time. But, since the film made its cinema debut in 2011, what has become of the man behind the pictures? EastLife reporter, JON RAWLINSON went in search of a few answers.

Brendan Donovan – loves to movie it.

It’s a bug’s life for Jane Thorne, who says she appreciates nature’s most diminutive creatures and paints them in intricate detail.

“I’m fascinated by insects because they’re essential to the world, yet often overlooked,” she says.

Aucklanders may have seen Jane’s works in galleries throughout Auckland, but she says exhibitions out east have always held special appeal.

“My paintings have been well received in east Auckland and I’ve sold quite a few to people there. My first exhibition was at Pakuranga Community and Cultural Centre and I’ve enjoyed exhibiting at Uxbridge; it’s a wonderful gallery that’s made a great name for itself. If asked to go back I’d definitely say, yes!”

Most recently, Jane exhibited at Railway Street Studios in Newmarket.

“It was my first solo exhibition and generated a lot of interest. There’s nothing like having a show with all your own work.”

Entitled Origin of Species, it featured many creepy-crawlies, which Jane says offer more a visual than a scientific attraction to her.

“Real bugs actually freak me out! Like insects, my paintings have evolved, but they’re not really about evolution. I just love [Charles] Darwin’s obsession with collecting, which has become my obsession; collecting images of bugs and painting them over and over again.

“I like to be accurate in my depictions, and love learning what my bugs are and where they come from, particularly more exotic species found in museums. They have bugs from all around the world, with loads of brilliant colours and strange shapes.”

Insects aside, Jane also paints machinery and other everyday things that are important, but also tend to be overlooked. She says inspiration comes from the world around her, particularly from the works of other artists.

“The other artists here at Dornwell Studios are probably my closest influences. I love looking at the works of others and I’m really into Nigel Brown’s work. It has a genuine kiwiana feel. Because I paint some New Zealand bugs, my work is ‘Kiwi’ in a way; wetas, for example, you’re unlikely to see those in the works of overseas painters!”

Jane’s paintings sell for $120, through to a few thousand for larger works.

“My paintings are quite affordable, considering the amount of work I put in. However, I’d rather have them out there in people’s homes, than locked away as investments.

“I understand people buy art as investments, but that doesn’t influence how or what I create. I paint for me first of all, which is true of most artists. That’s what makes art attractive and valuable, because it represents the originality and passion of the artist.”

Jane will next exhibit at a group show at Railway Street Studios in Newmarket, from August 30.

Every bug has this ThorneVan Gogh painted sunflowers, Constable, the English countryside and Picasso, well, who knows what he painted! But one Auckland artist enjoys the beauty of the basest of nature’s offerings, as JON RAWLINSON discovered.

Real bugs actually freak me out! Like insects, my paintings have evolved, but they’re not really about evolution. I just love [Charles] Darwin’s obsession with collecting, which has become my obsession; collecting images of bugs and painting them over and over again.”

Anthony Tringham and his family are regulars at the market going by the name of Curious Croppers – “growers of cranky but gorgeous vegetables”.

But more curious are the names and personalities of the fruits of their labour including the Little Horrors, Spanish Red, Spanish Green, and Little Miss Sunshine. What’s more, they all have personalities to match.

Spanish Green is described as the slightly bitchy cousin of Spanish Red. “The female ones are a little bit crazy and fickle,” Anthony says.

On the Curious Croppers website, “she” is described as: “tart, edgy and sexy as hell. She will steal your boyfriend and then dump him. Fun at parties good in small doses, and not the marrying kind” – clearly not Anthony’s wife, Angela, then. “She married me because of my good looks and my charm, and stayed for the tomatoes!” Anthony jokes.

But way before the markets began, Anthony worked the family farm.

“Anthony was always the tomato grower – he was the one who went to Lincoln University,” Angela says.

They both agree it was Clevedon Market founder, Helen Dorresteyn, who “nagged” them to become part of the market four years ago. Since their debut, the Tringhams have expanded their range and their clientele.

Chefs from top city restaurants such as The Grill, Depot and Euro are fans of the Curious Croppers formula.

Living city-side, the Tringhams commute to the country to work on their tomato farm near the market.

Certain heirloom outdoor varieties can be grown for one to two months during summer and indoor varieties are grown in greenhouses

No ‘Toms’, Dick or HarryListening to Anthony Tringham talk about the love of his life is enough to make you blush as red as a tomato. Ironically, it is this very fruit that is the object of the bespectacled farmer’s affections and one of the loves of his life. NATALIE BRITTAN visited Clevedon Farmers’ Market to unearth the secrets of this specialty tomato grower.

all year round under harsh conditions to limit the yield and produce an intense flavour. These are picked as ripe as possible just before market day.

The Curious Croppers use bio-controls such as parasitic wasps and ladybirds

to keep the pests under control, and they use only the gentlest of sprays.

But the big bonus is the way Anthony feels about each fruit.

“They’re sexy and beautiful. Everyone needs them every day. Isn’t the tomato called the fruit of love? They’re

beautiful and they’re fun. I love them all!”

However, tomatoes

cannot grow on love alone. Blackbirds often devour the ripe tomatoes which means they have to be picked early.

In spite of the blackbirds, the Curious Croppers continue to expand their range with additions such as tomatillos and the rainbow tomato.

As another market ends, the Tringhams marvel at their sales.

“When we started here it was a bit dull,” they say. “Then we expanded

and now it’s fun, it really is exciting.”

‘To Peter. Come back again. Maururu roa, Vai.’ These warm words, handwritten next to a photograph of a Marquesan beauty standing beside a large, ancient stone tiki hold special memories.

Vaihere gave me her autograph when I visited the Marquesas on the Aranui III as tour leader of a Calder & Lawson tour.

The ship took both supplies and passengers to the islands from Tahiti and Vai was one of the multilingual team of guides on board.

A couple of years later I returned to these enchanted islands, 1500 km northeast of Tahiti, and I am still under their spell.

But don’t imagine low-lying atolls with placid palm-fringed lagoons. Think craggy cliffs rising out of the deep sea, or steep pinnacles of basaltic rock, some of them up to 1000 metres high, forming a backdrop to villages nestled in shady valleys or coastal bays.

I was up early on the day we entered Vaipaee Bay on Ua Huka in the Marquesas Group. The bay was only marginally wider than the length of our ship.

Until 1987, the supply ship anchored offshore and its cargo was shifted by whaleboat. But in March of that year, Captain Théodore Oputu decided that with care and seamanship it was possible to enter the bay.

He anchored just inside the entrance and then, with cables attached to the cliffs by his intrepid Marquesan sailors, swung the ship around 180 degrees. The whaleboats were able to transfer both cargo and passengers in calm water to the wharf.

Now, more than 20 years later, we repeated the difficult and daring manoeuvre, the Marquesan captain ‘ice-cool’, while excited passengers walked forward and aft on the side-decks, thrilled by the spectacle.

Other spectators included a number of wild goats and horses which watched us from the high, barren cliffs – barren because these introduced animals had destroyed most of the native vegetation of the island. In fact, there are more wild horses and goats than humans – the population of Ua Huka is approximately 570.

On the day we visited, the programme had us travelling in a convoy of four-wheel drive vehicles from the wharf to a mayoral reception in the grounds of

the museum. This was to be followed by a visit to an arboretum designed to restore the former lush vegetation of the island.

On landing we were told to look for vehicles decorated with flowers. I ended up in the front seat of one flower-bedecked Land Rover. Our driver was an attractive young woman wearing (post-missionary!) traditional dress. Fortunately I speak some French so we exchanged a few pleasantries on the way to the museum.

Like almost every occasion in the Marquesas, the mayoral reception involved a dance display. To my surprise, our driver was one of the dancers, extending a graceful

welcome to the small realm we were visiting.

After viewing the beautiful arboretum, we carried on to a lunch of roasted goat at the coastal village of Hane. On the way, I complimented our guide and dancer on her multi-tasking skills.

“I suppose you will also cook our lunch,” I joked.

“Oh no,” she laughed. “My grandmother is doing that. – But I shot the goat up in the hills yesterday.”

The goat, by the way, was delicious.

Marquesas magicEmeritus Professor PETER OETTLI has in his bookshelf a small volume about the Marquesas Islands. It is a description of this remote part of French Polynesia as well as a guide for tourists but, as he explains, it is the dedication inside that makes it special.

The programme had us travelling in a convoy of four-wheel drive vehicles from the wharf to a mayoral reception in the grounds of the museum. This was followed by a visit to an arboretum designed to restore the former lush vegetation of the island.”

Local art enthusiasts are in for a treat at the Word of Art exhibition at Uxbridge this month.

Works by Auckland art luminary, Paul Hartigan, whose artistic manifesto is light, impress in the Word of Art exhibition. The core thread and ideology of Paul’s work, which he creates from his Grey Lynn studio, light is seen in different mediums such as neon – his signature medium – print, photography or painting.

Boasting a career spanning four decades, Paul has made his mark around the country with several prominent neon fixtures at The University of Auckland – where he studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts – and at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in his hometown, New Plymouth.

His collection at Uxbridge, titled Revolution, consists of domestic works of neon art which pay tribute to

famous artists such as Mondrian and Don Driver, from New Plymouth, who is one of Paul’s major influences.

“These are small scale light works featuring line and light drawings, which use movement and revolution. They function as a time-based rotation, which refer to an influential artist or translate their work into light,” says Paul.

“I work on projects using neon light that describe the symbiotic relationship it has with its host structure – it’s what I do best.”

He says the collection is more than what it seems at first glance. “It can be exciting. It’s up to the viewer to engage with my work based on their own experience – there’s no fixed or rigid conclusion.”

Modern infrastructure means the seaside town of Orewa is almost a suburb of Auckland and most of the basic baches from my youth are long gone.

So, when offered a weekend away in an Oxford 65 caravan, I decided Raglan was the place for me to recapture the halcyon days of my youth.

Many old timers will remember the iconic Oxford of yesteryear – there were hundreds trundling around the countryside, offering their owners comfortable, but compact living for family holidays.

However, as technology, materials and wages, advanced at a rapid rate, the Oxford disappeared, replaced by bigger, swankier models with all the luxuries. That is until 2011 when Motek resurrected and rejuvenated the Oxford.

I first discovered the new, reconfigured Oxford 55 and 65 at the Covi Motorhome, Caravan and Outdoor Show in Auckland and was delighted to see the former classic back with a modern twist.

Then, out of the blue, some two years later, came the chance to take one away for a weekend, hence the idea of Raglan by the sea and a weekend escape with my sister-in-law.

What fun we had despite a few mishaps (see story opposite). Though I’m ashamed to say this was my first visit to the coastal Waikato town, I’m happy to report, Raglan completely charmed me. I fell in love with the scenery, the people, the great shopping and the cafes.

We opted for the Oxford 65, bigger than the 55, with its own master bedroom, separate living and well appointed bathroom.

The good man in my life volunteered to tow the van to Raglan (a tow rating of over two tonne meant we needed his vehicle). Once we were settled at the pristine and superbly run Raglan Kopua Holiday Park, he departed and we two set about enjoying ourselves.

Despite mistaking the microwave for the TV (no glasses again) there wasn’t much my scrutiny of this compact form of living missed.

The kitchen was virtually faultless – pantry, cupboards, good size sink,

gas hobs, extractor fan, stylish fridge/freezer and covers for sink and hobs which provided added bench space when the latter weren’t in use.

While sister-in-law and I have no qualms about sharing a queen-size bed, the double here looked a little snug for anyone other than partners so she took the bedroom and I, the single bed in the living area. And for someone who is a poor sleeper, I slept like a log.

The shower was extremely roomy, the hand basin adequate (good shelving in the bathroom) and I think the nifty loo does the job – not keen to do a clean-up job for just a couple of days away, we used the camp bathroom just a step from our site.

On this occasion we gave serious cooking a miss – just too much to tempt us into town. However, we did use the toaster and jug for breakfast. We also loved the security of being next to neighbours who were up for a chat and a rescue mission (see story

opposite) and perfectly understood why so many people have opted for the caravan lifestyle whether for short holidays or permanent living.

As for me, who has spent months trying to declutter, the idea of living so simply without accumulated ‘knick-knacks’, seemed idyllic.

On the other hand, I’m not so sure if I would want to be constantly on the road even though our van was easy to tow. I like the idea of heading to a campground come next Christmas and bunking down for a month.

Alternatively, a permanent site would be really great. And for me, it’s Raglan. With its glorious sea views and rural scenery, amazing beaches, bustling community and excellent amenities, it offers a lot; a site there, just 90 minutes from Bombay, has endless appeal.

Growing up in Auckland during the 1950’s EastLife editor, HELEN PERRY was part of that golden era when, come summer, many families packed up all their cares and woes and headed an hour north to the bach, tent or caravan site at Orewa.

If it weren’t for my Oxford where would I be? I’d be in the hospital or infi rmary… So you don’t think so? Perhaps you’re even smiling at the thought.

Well, let me tell you about my wonderful caravanning weekend, which had sister-in-law and I laughing most of the time. I might even have ended up in the hospital if one little incident hadn’t been resolved before I faced doing a Fosbury Flop out the window!

But let me start at the beginning, which wasn’t great; not when my three and a half minute dash to pick up a book for ‘escape’ reading cost me a total $158.99. Just $8.99 for the novel; $150 for the parking ticket.

Of course, you won’t have an ounce of sympathy for me because I was illegally parked. In a disability space. But I still felt marginally aggrieved.

Like a dozen other cars I had double parked for several minutes waiting on a space to come clear. I twice circuited Pakuranga Plaza’s Aylesbury St hoping for that elusive park.

Suddenly, two cars pulled out together and I swung into a space

then, on climbing out, saw it was a wheelchair park. I did hesitate, but the other park was free so I ran the two doors to Paper Plus grabbed my book and dashed back – three and a half minutes. Other space still clear but too late! Offi cer Do it Right was on the job with ticket in hand.

Guilty as charged and a very sad $150 start to my weekend. Needless to say, this put me in quite a fl ap resulting in me forgetting to grab my camera and leaving behind my pack with anti-perspirant, cleanser, hair brush and fl annel. Luckily, soap, toothbrush and paste were in another pack.

But did the disasters end there? Not at all. Panicking about how late I was – caravan-towing husband was at least 90 minutes ahead of me (or so I thought), the plan being to meet in Ngaruawahia.

On the motorway at last and then, oopsy, I missed the off ramp to pick up sister-in-law and had to travel in heavy southbound traffi c a further two kilometres before I could turn around and head back.

Made the turn but then another error had me heading for Cavendish Drive rather than Roscommon Road.

Finally, we were on our way. Thank goodness when husband rang 40 minutes later he was only just ahead of us, he too had been delayed by more than an hour.

Well I’ve said a lot and we’re not even at Raglan yet. The rest of our weekend involved locking ourselves inside the caravan with no way out other than the window – just don’t ask; I have no idea how we did that.

Thankfully, after a lot of yoo-hooing, the neighbour heard us and I didn’t have to employ a fl ip-fl op out the window which I just know would have ended in a broken leg or, at the very least, a bent toe (and the infi rmary for sure).

During the next two days I lost my car keys in town and found them again after traipsing to and fro between several destinations. I also discovered my book – the $158.99 book – was teenage reading and sci-fi to boot. Who would have thought it, Blood Ransom sounded like a good thriller to me. But that’s what comes from not having glasses when choosing!

And last but not least, the bottle of wine we intended for a night of merriment before hitting the sack was corked! And, you guessed it, we didn’t have a corkscrew!

Read adjacent story for my view of the resurrected Oxford 65 – what a way to holiday!

Bucklands Beach has been thrust into the art and historic limelight at one of Auckland’s most revered landmarks, Highwic in Newmarket, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

Once the home of the prominent Buckland family, the historic home has on display paintings and sketches depicting early scenes of Auckland, with Bucklands Beach taking precedence.

Produced by Colonel Arthur Morrow, these works shed light on the life of the Buckland family and their outings to the coastal area on the Tamaki Peninsula.

“Colonel Morrow was the son-in-law of Alfred Buckland – the original owner of Highwic,” says Highwic manager, Cheryl Laurie.

In addition to their Highwic mansion, the Buckland family owned 141

hectares of the area which became known as Bucklands Beach.

The family – including Morrow – spent many summer months there horse riding, picnicking and swimming.

“For the extended Buckland family, summers at Bucklands Beach were a time to get together, relax, have fun and enjoy the beautiful land and seascape, which Colonel Morrow captured so well in his paintings and sketches,” says Cheryl.

However, the trip from Newmarket to Bucklands Beach was not so easy.

“The family would leave Highwic early in the morning, driving through Remuera in cabs drawn by teams of four horses. The trip by carriage on rough, gravel roads took fi ve hours one way; an extraordinary length of time for a comparatively short distance, even by today’s standards of legendary traffi c snarl-ups.”

An intriguing personality, Colonel Morrow was a military man through and through, yet highly artistic.

A crack shot with a rifl e, he won several prestigious awards for his target shooting, and had a distinguished military career in New Zealand serving in the Waikato War. He also had an abiding interest and passion for the country’s fl ora and fauna, as well as art.

He passed away in 1937 at the age of 94 and his wife, Mariamne – the third daughter of Alfred Buckland – died in 1957 at the age of 102.

“The Morrow collection is an important part of the Highwic story – and an important collection of NZ art in its own right,” says Cheryl.

And, of course, it is an important part of this district’s history too.

“Stimulating!” That’s how painter John Horton describes his art. “It evokes memories of places visited or encourages people to get out and enjoy our beautiful country,” he adds.

Speaking from his home in Whitford, John continues to tell how living in Howick inspires him.

“Being a coastal town, it provides plenty of artistic inspirations with its many tidal beaches and estuaries. Plenty of rural scenes toward the Whitford area. The town streets also provide good colourful scenes.”

“I would describe my art as Artistic Representational which means capturing realistic images in a loose artistic technique. My preferred medium is oil which is utilised in a ‘wet on wet’ technique. It has taken a bit of time to perfect.”

Painting for more than 35 years, John has exhibited regularly at galleries in Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Napier and Christchurch. He also takes time to share his talents,

conducting demonstrations and workshops for various Auckland art groups and was a tutor for evening classes at Pakuranga College.

He is a recipient of numerous awards and prizes from the Australian Artist magazine, New Zealand Fellowship of Artists, Franklin Arts Festival, Auckland Easter Show, and North Shore Art Awards.

Further explaining why he paints: “I love the New Zealand scenery. It is so attractive and colourful to capture in paint. My enthusiasm has never waned and I still enjoy this work.”

See John’s artworks at The Original Art Sale, Auckland’s largest art market. The Annual Gala Charity Evening is on May 16 and public sale dates are from May 17-19, 2013 at the Vodafone Events Centre (formerly TelstraClear Pacific).

What woman doesn’t love a love story? And for those who enjoy a tale encompassing courage, determination and love then this epic love story will stay with you long after you have turned the final page.

The French Promise is Fiona McIntosh at her entertaining best. It’s 1951 and Luc and Lisette Ravens – a former French resistance fighter and a one-time British spy – have somehow survived the Nazi horrors of occupied France.

But peacetime in a sleepy hamlet cannot keep the restless spirit still nor can it hide the scars. Casting their fate to the winds, they sail to Tasmania on their most daring and romantic adventure to rebuild their lives and plant new lavender fields in a land that’s full of promise.

However, it seems loss is something that cannot escape the Ravens, even on the other

side of the world, and when catastrophe strikes, traumas from a painful past come flooding back.

In order to lay the old ghosts to rest, so life and love might come full circle, Luc must return to France where it all began and where a young man awaits with a chilling secret to share.

From the south coast of England to the rugged farmland of Northern Tasmania, the lively streets of post war Paris and the patchwork vistas of Provence, The French Promise is the best kind of human spirit story.

• The French Promise, by Fiona McIntosh. Published by Penguin Group (NZ). RRP $37

Here’s a historical romance that will grip readers who have a fascination for the Tudor period and its conspiracies.

True to form, the court of Henry VIII is rife with intrigue, rivalries and romance – and none are better placed to understand this than the women at its heart.

Katherine Parr, widowed for the second time aged thirty-one, is obliged to return to court but suspicious of the ageing king and those who surround him, she does so with reluctance.

Nevertheless, when she finds herself caught up in a passionate affair with the dashing and seductive Thomas Seymour, she believes she might finally be able to marry for love. But her presence at court has attracted the attentions of another . . .

Captivated by her honesty and intelligence, Henry Tudor has his own plans for Katherine and no one is in the position to refuse a proposal from the king.

So, with her charismatic lover dispatched to the continent, Katherine must accept the hand of the ailing egotistical monarch and become Henry’s sixth wife – and yet she has still not quite given up on love.

Queen’s Gambit is a gripping tale of secrets, love, paranoia and corruption told through the eyes of Katherine Parr herself. Great Mother’s Day buying.

STEP BACK IN TIME

EPIC LOVE STORY

Today’s busy mums are often so caught up with work, families and household chores that there are precious few hours left for reading at leisure. Yet many will snatch whatever time is available to lose themselves in the pages of a good book where they can escape everyday demands. Mille from Overland is a great handbag option. Easy to take from day to night, the adjustable straps allow it to be worn as a cross body or over the shoulder. The cute skull detail adds a touch of bad girl. NZd $119.90

We’re digging denim these days and this Garage chambray shirt is a steal at $35 from The Warehouse. A simple way to touch on this look is to pair with a skater skirt or some coloured skinnies for casual and cool understated style.

For a slick evening look, this textured metallic dress from Glassons is an easy go to option. The textured fabric reduces the shine factor so you needn’t worry about looking as if you’ve joined the space programme when you hit the town. And if body-con “ain’t your thang” then wear as a tunic and pop over a killer pair of leggings.

Not for the faint hearted Bea from Mi Piaci will make sure no one

messes with you...EvER! Tonal stud detail softens hard edges and makes

these totally wearable. Pair with leather pants or

wet-look leggings and an oversized shirt

then, voila, rock and roll sheik!

Those not brave enough to try head-to-toe metallic can still take the trend to the body with this oversized batwing tee with gold foil print, and subtle star-studded shoulder detail. A simple wear solution at a great price – $49 from Max.

If you’re the mix-n-match, add-as-you-go type then make your metal mark with a piece of statement jewellery. Our faves are this sleeping bat pendant, $525, and spurs brooch, $379, both from Meadowlark.

World-renowned graffiti artist, Curtis Kulig, and Smashbox have joined forces to create Love Me, a limited edition collection which merges the shared focus of Kulig and Smashbox – art, photography, and, of course, beauty.

In going over the collection with me, Lori’s helpful information made it easy to predict this product range will be a hit.

The Love Me Eye Shadow Palettes (RRP $54) etched with Kulig’s Love Me mark are simply divine!

Admire Me, is a rich mix of golden brown, earthy tones, and Entice Me (my personal favourite) is a mix of cool blues and icy pinks. Both palettes have a buttery, smooth texture, are highly pigmented, and can be used dry and wet.

Lori said a ‘must have’ for any dramatic eye look is the Love Me Paint Pen Eyeliner (RRP $48).

This jet-black liquid liner is based on the design of Kulig’s paint pen making it super easy to hold and control.

“When it comes to lips, the two newest colours in the Be Legendary collection will make your pout pop like a work of art!,” said Lori.

Love Me is a pantone match to Kulig’s signature red and Tempt Me is a sultry shade of coral (RRP $45 each).

If it’s a gloss you’re after there’s Love Me Lip Enhancing Gloss (RRP $45 each).

Adore Me, is a vibrant fuchsia pink, and Charm Me, a lovely, subtle nude

pink. Each can be worn on its own or layered over-top of your favourite Smashbox lipstick.

And, finally, to add a rush of colour to the cheeks, Idolize Me (RRP $48) is a silk-like, soft pink powder.

“It will instantly give your cheeks a warm, luminous glow and keep your skin looking flushed and healthy all day,” Lori said.

Perfect! Available in store and online now. See page 16 for your chance to win the Love Me collection.

For a long time I resisted the urgings of friends to meet Nancy and join her circle of friends. Her strait laced demeanour never really appealed.

However, with everyone sounding her virtues, especially when it came to looking a million dollars, I began to seriously consider what her friendship would mean. Finally, when faced with a special function and despairing of what to wear, I thought I should give this pushy Miss Ganz the benefit of the doubt and see what support she could offer.

Well, from day one, getting to know her has been a struggle. She has pushed and poked at my figure faults and is seemingly determined to whip me into shape.

Even when every fibre of my body is struggling against her ardent attempts to pull me in a new direction, she remains staunch – I will be her friend whether I like it or not and she will make me look a million dollars.

Well, together, we haven’t yet achieved the million dollar look and while each encounter is hard work, and sometimes involves rough and tumble, I have to concede Nancy has made a big difference to my life.

We don’t meet that often and when we do, I head out the door feeling in control if a little up-tight. I am now part of her circle of friends and find myself urging others of slightly rotund proportions to come and meet the amazing Nancy Ganz.

Some days you’ll love her; some days you’ll hate her but she will do wonders for your figure and just when you need it most.

You’ve probably realised the week I mentioned started with Nancy in tow. Her strict dressing guidelines can still make me grumpy and it’s always a mission to ensure we are on the same plane, especially as she is a little smaller than me. But I’ve warmed to her ways and have come to appreciate the wholehearted support of the wonderful Nancy Ganz!

Repertoire for Autumn/Winter 2013 is all about great separate pieces that will keep your wardrobe current, versatile and effortless to put together.

Be bold and confident this season by stepping out in a palette of blues that are anything but moody or find your inner diva in all shades of red supported with a bold statement of black and white.

Black and white stripes and a touch of gold also adds a Parisian chic feel to the collection.

The annual celebration of Kiwi mums is the perfect time to honour the feminine tradition in your family with stunning timeless images of mothers and daughters.

Howick-based, professional portrait photographer Lisa Harrington says she thoroughly enjoys the cross-generation photo shoots.

“There’s always something very special about watching a family’s interaction,” she says.

“You can often see a personality or visual trait passed down from generation to generation. It might be a brow, the shape of the nose or even a quirky sense of humour.”

Whilst this is interesting for the photographer and onlookers, it can also be a special moment of recognition among the family members themselves.

“It’s as if they can magically see

what outside onlookers can see – my mother as myself. ultimately it is very powerful honouring the often unseen and unappreciated ‘mother’s work’ that goes into building a strong, close family unit.”

TIMELESS MOTHERS

To help celebrate Mother’s day 2013 Timeless Images is offering a special Timeless Mothers photo shoot.

The style and location of the shoot can be tailored to suit the family – whether a special local beach, country or studio setting.

“We take special care to make sure everyone is relaxed and having fun and that a whole series of shots are taken. Later we review the shoot and discreetly apply state of the art fi nishing and photoshop touch-ups to ensure everyone is presented from their ‘very best side’,” says Lisa.

“Family portrait shoots are always

fun, only surpassed by the excited atmosphere of the photo shoot reveal when numerous shots are presented to the family on a large six foot screen.

“We strive to show a family’s spirit and its unique story in visual images in a way that families can go back and rediscover their maternal history down through the generations. It’s really the perfect gift for Mother’s day,” says Lisa Harrington.

A Howick local and beauty professional, Emma worked at Caci before acquiring the business and witnessed fi rsthand the company’s admirable ideology and impeccable standards.

One of the leading providers of skincare and appearance medicine in Australasia, Caci Medispa is a trusted and highly regarded brand.

As a result, Emma lost no time in seizing the opportunity to own the clinic when it arose. “I’m really passionate about serving local residents and our focus is on bringing a personalised service that exceeds expectations.”

Supported by her highly competent and experienced team of beauty therapists Natasha, Sarah, Mathu, Louise and Ashley, Emma is all set for success.

Many of the team members have been with the business from the very beginning and have built a strong rapport with customers, ensuring their loyalty.

Sarah, for example, has customers from Half Moon Bay to Highland Park and friends are often surprised to discover she is their mutual therapist.

“We have a very loyal backing,” says treatment co-ordinator Natasha. “Because many of our treatment programmes are over the course of a year or more, our clients often look forward to their next appointment and friendships are formed.”

Caci is particularly well-known for its three comprehensive programmes: Amerase, Reformaskin and Freedom.

The Amerase programme offers the latest in appearance medicine such as Botox and fi llers, performed with precision by fully qualifi ed, injectable nurse Louise.

The ultimate solution for healthy, glowing skin, the Reformaskin programme solves unevenness, red veins, lines, wrinkles and pigmentation.

Lastly, the Freedom programme is a laser hair removal regime that comes with a two-year guarantee ensuring hair stays off after the programme is complete.

Hygiene is a priority at the clinic, and clients are treated in well-appointed and dedicated ‘suites’ depending on their treatment.

A major draw card for Caci’s clients is its fl exible payment options and its attractive rewards programme.

“We customise each treatment package to ensure it is affordable, practical and works within individual budgets,” says Natasha. “We truly believe in rewarding our loyal customers with extra benefi ts and complimentary treatments.

“Catering to their individual needs and educating them is something that gives us great satisfaction – it’s about helping people feel better and boosting their self-esteem.”

You know that you’re in for a beauty experience with a difference as soon as you walk through the pink door.

Not only is all the signage pink, and the artwork pink, and the staff t-shirts pink (no stuffy nurses’ uniforms here!)… but also the stationery, hand towels and soap are pink. No detail has been overlooked.

It’s all about the attention to detail…

What this level of detail means is that beauty therapy clients are in for a great experience. That’s because this attention to detail includes well-trained, competent (and friendly) staff as well as sourcing the best tools, equipment and techniques for the job.

Staff are trained to deliver the high standards set by business owner Ruby Francis. “We’ll guarantee that all monthly Brazilian waxes will be done within 15 minutes, or it’s free,” says Ruby. “In 16 years of business, across all four salons, we’ve only had to give away two free waxes.”

TIME-FOCUSED bEAUTY

Says Ruby: “Our clients are busy people. They have busy lives. So it’s our job to provide efficient and effective treatments – and make sure that appointments start on time. We also realise that beauty doesn’t begin and end in the salon, that what you do at home makes a difference. So, the Rubywaxx girls are trained to give advice on take-home options too.”

Rubywaxx’s approach was recognised at the Westpac Auckland Central Business Awards 2012, where the company won the Excellence in Retail category.

More details on Rubywaxx are at www.rubywaxx.co.nz.

dISCOvER THE *RuBYWAxx* dIFFERENCE…Since Rubywaxx opened its (pink) door inside All Season’s Fitness Centre last year, East Aucklanders have been able to enjoy beauty therapy with a difference. And different is good: Rubywaxx scooped a coveted Westpac Business Excellence Award last year, and with good reason…

Think pink:

Our clients are busy people. They have got busy lives. So, it’s our job to provide efficient and effective treatments – and make sure that appointments start on time.”

With the season changing look ahead and ask why the short, cold days, and long dark nights of winter seem to sabotage efforts to exercise and eat well.

Personally, I think our primal hibernation instinct kicks in, telling us to eat more and move less in order to survive the winter. Yes, it is cold and dark but don your coat and hat, grab a friend, a high visibility vest and a torch and get out and train. If you really can’t face the outdoors, hire a bike or treadmill or join the gym.

At Outlook we train outside right through winter and I think we only got wet twice last year!

Exercising first thing in the morning helps you feel better for the whole day. Most colds are caught indoors in air-conditioned rooms not outside

in the fresh air. The fitter you are the better you are able to fight off colds and flu. Setting a fitness goal in winter helps to keep your Mojo and provides something to get out and train for.

Of course, when we are sick during winter, we exercise less. Some research also shows that glucose receptors on fat cells enlarge when we have a cold, helping us to gain weight – good old survival mechanism again!

Seasonal affective disorder or the “sads” can trick us into eating too many serotonin producing carbohydrates to help us feel better. In some studies women have eaten an extra 800 cals of comfort food a day in the form of rice, potatoes, pasta and bread. That’s potentially a 10kg weight gain over three months!

Insulate homes to save heating dollars and calories. Whilst you might burn calories keeping warm in a draughty house, research shows we tend to eat more when we feel cold. Aim to eat nutrient-dense, satisfying foods.

For breakfast try porridge or other high fibre, hot cereals such as Weetbix or All Bran with hot milk. Add a sprinkle of slivered almonds and a dollop of Greek yoghurt for extra protein or go for eggs and baked beans on wholegrain toast; use grilled mushrooms and tomatoes too. Natural peanut butter with a banana on grainy toast is another favourite.

Try toasted pita pockets with veggie soup for lunch, or what about a baked/microwaved kumara filled with cottage cheese, chilli beans, baked beans or leftovers?

With so many warming and healthy soups, stews and casseroles available, there is no excuse for eating badly through winter. Make the slow cooker your best friend. Add chickpeas, lentils, beans and pulses. Great winter veggies such as cauliflower, broccoli, leeks, onions, carrots, cabbage can bulk up meals with fibre and cancer-fighting phytochemicals. Just because salads don’t appeal there is no excuse not to eat your four handfuls of veggies in a day.

Wonderful soups, ratatouille, moussaka, and chicken pies, curries, lasagnes and pizzas can all be served in healthy options.

Stay healthy and well and avoid winter weight gain with natural antioxidants and exercise then you’ll keep your Mojo.

Most people like to think they take “reasonable” care of their skin but how many have been

guilty of going to bed with the day’s makeup still on or spending a day out with no sun protection?

Keeping skin healthy and looking fabulous involves a

bit of work. In addition to a regular beauty routine (rather than a slap-dash regime) our skin can benefit from various treatments but, as we age, it’s important to choose the right one to suit our skin’s particular needs.

Nothing reflects the movement of time as much as our skin. Here is an overview of a woman’s skin needs through the ages:

• Teenagers: Hormones surge through the body causing changes to moods and skin; the onset of more oil production can trigger acne and unsightly breakouts. Medicated clearing facials will help

blemishes, remove blackheads, balance oil production and reduce inflammation. This is a critical time to reinforce the dangers that can result from exposure to uvA and uvB rays. Learning about skin at an early age will benefit youth for life.

• Twenties to Thirties: At this time the ageing process starts to reveal itself in the first really visible signs. Small amounts of collagen and elastin start to break down and the skin’s natural hydration, known as hyaluronic acid, decreases. Therefore, it is vital to look at products that are suited to you and treatments customised for your skin. Best anti-ageing product at this age is a quality sun protection with additional antioxidants, multivitamins and anti inflammatory ingredients such as green tea and liquorice.

• Thirties to Forties: If you haven’t yet done so, this is the prime time to invest in an anti-ageing eye product. Our eyes are the first place to see fine lines. Firming and age prevention is fundamental. Cell turnover is slower so the importance of knowing whether exfoliants are physical,

chemical or enzyme based, and which one is right for you, is essential. Facial treatments such as microdermabrasion and alpha/ beta hydroxyl peels work wonders for anti-ageing.

• Forties and Fifties: Environmental damage becomes noticeable, age spots, spider veins and wrinkles can contribute to irritated, dry and more sensitised skin. What worked in our 30’s doesn’t usually work in our 50’s so consulting a professional will keep you informed on the latest in skin health. Customised treatments will reduce and improve any skin concerns.

• Sixty plus and no hiding from the truth: You will see and feel the difference if you have been a lifetime devotee of skin protection! But it’s never too late to give skin the care it needs. If unsure about your skin’s needs call me and discuss your concerns. I’m dedicated to helping clients reach their skin care goals.

The minute I stepped beyond the interiors showroom of Inner Concepts and into The Lounge, I knew this was a secret which would soon be ‘out’. In which case, I’m leaking it to the district fi rst! Well, almost fi rst.

A few people have already discovered that this a great place to party whether for a special celebration, corporate event or even a wedding!

A unique, boutique function centre owned by Tony and Chris Bull, it is exquisitely decorated which is no surprise. Chris, owner of Inner Concepts, is an experienced interior designer; her creativity showing at every turn in The Lounge.

In fact, the whole concept is revealed in its name. First impressions are of an elegant lounge complemented by a stately dining and dance fl oor with the ability to be re-themed and re-confi gured according to the event.

As Chris explains: “One minute, guests feel they have been magically transported into the bygone era of yesteryear; next, they fi nd themselves relaxing amidst the luxury of modern/classic elegance. We can create any look, any mood.”

Mandy May used The Lounge for her hen’s party and says she was ‘blown away’ by the decor, lighting effects video and sound system. “It was set up perfectly with champagne poured and the topless waiter, in bow tie, standing ready to look after guests!

“The decor was stunning and

Christine had added to this with her four beautiful bustiers, dressing them in appropriate bridal attire!”

Mandy has since been to several functions and each time has been impressed by the versatility and dedication shown.

Chris adds that The Lounge is a great winter venue – “a place where the cold and rain is completely shut out and guests are in another world. We have even hosted a few events ourselves and they have been a hit with people looking for something different.”

Accommodating up to 100 people, with a maximum of 50 guests for a seated meal, the venue comes complete with its own bar, stage, dance fl oor and a movie screen, providing a rare setting for every manner of event.

“Where possible we will move heaven and earth to achieve our clients’ desires and make their event memorable,” Chris says. “The Lounge was just an idea. Then, fi nally, we went for it and have been thrilled by the response. It is such a pleasure to create an event which is remembered as one of the best ever.”

Howick’s best kept secret...Behind the pedestrian face of a commercial building in Howick Valley lies a secret, a lovely secret. It’s called The Lounge. EastLife editor HELEN PERRY went to investigate.

BREAKFAST

LUNCHDINNERNEW AUTUMN & WINTER MENU NOW AVAILABLE FROM THURS-SAT FROM 6PMENTREES FROM $7

Since sampling four eateries while visiting the coastal township of Raglan I have been ‘ragging’ a few cafe owner friends about the competition in another ‘village by the sea.’

Over two and a half days, everywhere we went, venues were pretty well packed out for lunch and dinner proving that at least this rural township isn’t short on chefs who can surf culinary ‘gnarlies’.

We started on Friday night at Banteay Srey Khmer, a laid back café which has taken its name from a 10th Century Hindu temple in the Angkor region of Cambodia.

The atmosphere bustled. Our friendly waitress was helpful and the simple menu reasonably priced. Once tasted, our dishes, with a element of Thai, went beyond the average mark.

We shared entrees of beef satay (a little leathery) and probably the best crispy fried calamari I’ve tasted in some time. These big fat balls were coated with chilli sauce but it was the inner calamari that impressed; perfectly tender, it was melt in the mouth quality and ever so moreish. At $8 this dish was a winner.

Afterwards, though tempted by a more traditional Cambodian curry, we finally settled for Pad Thai with prawns – tasty and flavoursome without being extraordinary. In all the

fare here was nicely prepared and presented and our bill, including four glasses of wine, (we were walking) was under $65.

On a perfect, sun-drenched day two, we lunched on the deck of Orca Bar and Restaurant with its lovely view of the inner harbour.

eating latish in the day and already booked elsewhere for dinner we opted for local Ruapuke sourdough bread with dips plus tea for two. Great bread, tangy, lemon-infused olive oil and generous bowls of hummus and dukkah – we were well satisfied. I decided this was a place (and a menu) to revisit. Cost for us was just $15.50.

The prospect of eating in at the Harbour View Hotel had me positively excited. We had failed to secure a table the previous evening – packed to the gunnels – so booked for the Saturday night.

did I ever love the ambience, décor and old world charm of this beautiful building, the third on the site and built in 1905.

Outside, patrons lined the verandah, many chatting to passersby. Someone strummed a guitar and sang.

Inside, the dining room featured loads of timber, beautiful leadlights, brick fireplace, elegant drapes and a

sense of intimacy that made us loathe to leave.

We both opted for fish of the day – pan-fried gurnard accompanied by a stuffed baked potato topped with cheese and a stir fry of capsicum and courgettes – just what this lady was longing for; fresh fish (ReALLy fresh) with the lingering tang of sea salt!

It was more than enough but could we look past the desserts? Simple answer, NO!

My blueberry/apple crumble would have challenged many a city venue; full marks for presentation and a berry delicious crumble with gourmet ice cream. Sister-in-law’s chocolate tart with Grand Marnier did the trick for her. A lot better than your usual pub grub, we found nothing much to criticise here.

Our last supper in Franklin was lunch at the Marlin Cafe at the wharf and boat ramp. Water’s edge stuff, the log cabin style was immensely appealing.

We relaxed on the deck and ordered what turned out to be a gigantic platter of wedges with real bacon, cheese and sour cream of which we only managed half. Base price was $11.50 with $1.50 per extra and yet again warm service, inexpensive wine by the glass and another setting to die for.

On the wall a 1999 photograph showed a pod of Orcas in the harbour – oh that we could have seen that, But do you know what? I’ve just booked myself another weekend in town. Can’t wait.

Go south, young man, may be a phrase eastLifers don’t really want to hear but recently HeLeN PeRRy discovered that Raglan was rich in glad eating places wooing foodies to this seaside region.

Dining at the historic Harbour View Hotel conjured up a charming picture of yesteryear.

Mother’s Day can be a time of reminiscing about all those little things Mum and Grandma have done for you throughout life. It is also an opportunity to say thank-you and acknowledge the qualities in them that you really appreciate and love.

So why not celebrate with an afternoon tea of the kind many people no longer have time to enjoy? Bring out the best china tea cups, load the cake plate with little niceties such as club sandwiches and butterfly cakes and play ladies for a day!

In this era of mass-produced ceramics, beautiful bone china often comes with a history, standing out as dainty and delicate yet it is amazingly strong.

A type of soft-paste porcelain which

includes bone ash, bone china was first made in 1748 by Thomas Frye at his Bow porcelain factory in East London but it was English potter Josiah Spode who went on to really develop bone china known for its high levels of whiteness, translucency, mechanical strength and resistance to chipping.

Today there are many fine examples of china from around the world but because of our Settler heritage, many New Zealanders still have a love affair with English china – Royal

Doulton, Hammersley, Royal Albert, Burleigh, Staffordshire, Minton, Royal Worcester, Spode and more.

And tucked away in china cabinets or cupboards around the country, many a mum will have a china tea set with cream and sugar bowl, teapot and cake plate too.

So, bring them out, dress the table and enjoy your own high tea. Finally, renew your acquaintance with fine china and introduce your daughters to a new way of entertaining.

For all the tea in ChinaMother’s Day is almost here and while every day should be ‘mother’s day’ if you are lucky enough to still have yours, this special Sunday is a chance to honour mothers and grandmothers with a special meal and get-together as DAWN SHELDON from Audrey’s Unique Homewares in Pakuranga explains.

Historic property ONE TO POT!

Historic Gantleys building at Arthur’s Point, just out of Queenstown, site for one of New Zealand’s best known restaurants and the original home of Queenstown’s first policeman, went on the market last month.

Sitting on some 7046m2 of land, the property has been home to the much admired Gantleys Restaurant for two decades ... a lifetime in the hectic hospitality industry.

And while the restaurant business, which will be known to many locals who regularly visit Queenstown, is not part of this sale offering, it could be purchased separately subject to negotiation.

The beautiful single-storey stone and wood structure, built in 1863 as a wayside inn during the Central Otago gold rush, was originally owned and operated by Queenstown’s first

policeman, Patrick Gantley. During the early 1900s the building fell into disrepair, and served as a hay barn and woolshed until 1967 when it was purchased and rebuilt in its present form.

The present owners purchased the property in 1993 and carried out extensive renovations and refurbishment.

The present day fine dining restaurant seats up to 100 guests and has won an Award of Excellence from US Wine Spectator magazine every year since 1996 for having “one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world”. It is also a former

winner of the Montana Food and Wine Challenge.

Gantleys Restaurant Ltd has a lease on the building and a total of 16 percent of the surrounding land through until 2019. The remaining land is available for immediate development.

With Arthur’s Point having evolved substantially over the past two decades, and the population growing, it is expected to eventually become a stand-alone Queenstown suburb.

The property is being marketed by Bayley’s Queenstown, which has full details and it’s still availability.

The eastern corner of Auckland is home to several idyllic suburbs where living is easy but for an entrepreneur keen to escape the daily rat race of driving to the city then, perhaps, this Queenstown opportunity could be a significant turning point.

The building and land housing famous Gantleys Restaurant is up for sale – at the time EastLife went to press tenders were due to close. If it hasn’t been snapped up, it’s worth a closer look.

Most people tend to change their decor about every 10 years opting for new paint or wallpaper and replacing furniture, soft furnishings and accessories. However, updating frames on paintings, prints, photographs, mirrors and other art works is often overlooked.

Art on walls helps create ambience and adds the finishing touch to a room. Therefore, it’s important that frames fit with decor style and are suitably updated if interiors are refreshed or changed in any way.

One contemporary treatment which exudes timeless appeal is box framing which features a frame deeper than it is wide and ensures the frame doesn’t dominate the art.

Because of the frame’s depth, the

glass sits forward of the art giving an extra sense of dimension.

The overall effect is sophisticated with the frame letting the art work tell the story. But this is just one type of frame and may not suit the art work in question, a particular decor or desired look.

Of course, it’s possible to frame art in several different ways and none be wrong. It’s all about balance, how and where the piece will sit on the wall, how much wall is involved, surrounding decor plus the presence and proximity of other art works.

Depending on the desired effect and

the nature of the art work, the frame is important. Seek expert advice and consider carefully the style which will best complement the art work and also fit with your interior design. This way you’ll achieve a pleasing result.

www.bmgalleries.co.nz

Paintings and art works are an important part of decor personality but there’s nothing like old-fashioned framing styles to date interiors or to look misplaced when refurbishing as BARRY McCORMICK explains.

Picture perfect

To frame or not to frame – that is the question here.”

On coming up with her own take on these clever creations, Colleen Pengelly put her best foot forward and planted it firmly against the butt of other gardeners with similar ideas.

The Howick resident says boots and shoes have long been used to pot plants but she has tried to create fun, funky planters that will add some kick to garden landscapes. And she has! “It started about two years ago when

I saw some boot planters at a market and thought, ‘I can do much better than that’. So I went home, drummed up some old work boots from friends and started experimenting.”

Colleen came up with a series of designs which have been a big hit – gardeners especially love her addition of bugs and pukeko, kiwi and tutataras that peer out from an open toe or a bootlace hole.

All come planted with the likes of bromeliads, ferns, succulents and baby’s tears (Soleirolia soleirolii) and it’s not unusual for her to sell all the planters during one morning at the Clevedon Village Market.

This means Colleen’s hard at work the following week sourcing and creating a new range. “They all have to be thoroughly washed and sanitised,” she says. “I then paint

them in a variety of colours and designs before finally applying a coat of polyurethane.”

Then, before customers can say ‘bulrush’ the boots are on a new retail footing and walking out the market door faster than brassicas can grow.

gardensBootiful A bootiful idea for garden planters which may not be entirely new but has legged it over the winning line when it comes to creativity and colour.”

There is a lot to be said for living one day at a time and ‘going with the flow,’ so to speak.

One weekend, I had good intentions of cleaning out the wardrobe and helping hubby to stack the firewood; I really did! But an early morning barefoot stroll in my nightie – across the lawn still damp with dew – changed my destiny; well, for that particular day anyway.

In a secluded corner of the garden, I came upon our hardy fig tree laden with pendulous purple fruit glistening in the sun; a captivating configuration, like dazzling decorations on a Christmas tree.

After gorging myself silly, I decided with such an abundance of fruit, to share my sweet bounty with friends and family. And maybe impress them with a little chutney or jam.

Back indoors I searched for fig recipes online and was overwhelmed with all manner of facts and figures relating to this ancient fruit, which is actually the flower of the tree.

The fascinating fig (Genus Ficus) has its botanical origins in western Asia, dating back more than 4000 years. It subsequently spread throughout the Mediterranean and beyond, thanks to ‘olde worlde’ colonisers and traders.

Highly prized as a natural sweetener and deemed a ‘luxury of the rich’ by the Romans and Greeks, it has

been consumed by pharaohs and courtesans, popes, paupers and poets.

In the Bible it says that the fig leaf was used to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. As a result, it has also been used to conceal genitalia in great artistic masterpieces.

In the 16th century Botticelli painted this peppy plant, and much later Edward Lear was inspired to pen this lilting limerick:

There was an Old Person of Ischia Whose conduct grew friskier and friskier; He danced hornpipes and jigs, And ate thousands of figs, That lively Old Person of Ischia.

Even more intriguing, throughout the ages, this potassium-packed delicacy has been renowned for its medicinal and aphrodisiac qualities. Hence the questionable conduct of the aforementioned Old Person of Ischia! Who would have thought this exotic edible with such humble beginnings contained such passion-producing power?

After learning all about figs, I was off to the neighbours, armed with a bulging basket, new-found knowledge and figgy fables aplenty!

Three hours later I returned from my trade mission, a little worse for wear, having bravely battled a neighbour’s guard duck for entry to their property!

Minus the figs I proudly bore free range eggs, rhubarb and a smidgen of gossip; well, it does take time to negotiate a fair deal, I tell hubby, who replies: “Are you for real or a ‘fig-ment’ of my imagination?”

That night, we dined al fresco on eggs Benedict, followed by fig and rhubarb crumble, complete with a cheeseboard and fig chutney.

My intentions to clear out the wardrobe and stack firewood had ‘gone up in smoke’, but my day had been all the richer, inspired by time spent lingering beneath the boughs of our fig tree.

I gained some knowledge, journeyed to legendary lands steeped in mythology, shared food, laughter and a little love in the sun, as well as travelling my own intrepid trade route. It was a most magical day, and it all started with a fig!

Every year I do battle with the birds for the best of the best, as they indulge in their fig-eating frenzy; hey, you win some, you lose some!

But there is nothing quite like sampling those sweet dew-dropped figs at first light, especially when gathered alone in my own Garden of Eden.

Figs flavour the dayWhen it comes to providing family and neighbours with goodies from the garden, not to mention a little ‘au natural’ knowledge, it pays to give a fig, EastLife contributor, SUSAN MATTHEWS, explains:

Good manners do make good money. I learnt that as a boy, mowing lawns. People always invited back, nice, polite kids, who did a good job. And, paid them betterer! Good manners are easy as.

But they are more than just, ‘please’, ‘excuse me’ and ‘thank you’. Here are some money manners. If I leave you a message, please try to reply, within my lifetime even... If I ever

get through your phone system, be friendly and accurate. Don’t offer an ‘exasperated quickie’.

If I point out some shortcoming in your biz, thank me. At least, check it out. That will excite my inner being. It will. Say, ‘welcome to my business’ in as many ways as you can. What happened to ‘welcome’ mats?

In your form letters, use imaginative

writers, OK. Return my smiles, but try smiling first. Say, ‘sorry’ with love, if your biz has done something unnice to my personage. A trip to Hawaii would be nice.

Be patient with me if I don’t really know what I want from you. Be friendly, even if I don’t open my wallet, after browsing like crazy. Be that person who waves appreciatively to car drivers, who stop for them at pedestrian crossings. People with manners are saying... ‘I do care about you.’

Do thank me for coming, and invite me back (or has that been

cancelled?). Teach your little ones manners, because rude children belong to rude parents.

Good manners not only make good money but also good relationships. Only desperate folks hang out with ‘rudies’ (i.e. slobs). Hello?

Bad-mannered morons are ego-centric, offensive and ignorant! They should be taken out before they breed… If they work for you, they will destroy your outfit in just nano- seconds flat! Many businesses still tolerate that. Shame!

Good manners... MAKE GOOD MONEY

So it’s time to take the next big step with your partner. That might mean getting married, but it might just mean moving in together.

It’s an exciting time, but couples need to keep in mind that the old phrase, ‘what’s mine is yours’ can be enforced by law once partners are deemed to have been in a relationship and ‘lived together’ for three years.

Generally speaking ‘Relationship Property’ is split down the middle by the courts after the relationship has lasted three years. In broad terms, ‘Relationship Property’ is property that you own jointly or share together; that, of course, can

include the relationship home even if the home was and is owned by just one of the parties. Therefore, it’s important to think about these things when embarking on your new status, rather than fight about it later. Fighting in court over asset splits on separation is expensive!

First, think about your assets; now think about your partner’s assets. Are they roughly equal? If they are, and you’re prepared to share with your partner everything you own now, and might earn in the future, then it’s not too much of a worry.

However, if entering into the relationship with assets already in your own name you may wish

to keep these separate or you might want a bit more financial independence from your partner.

Then you should consider seeing a lawyer for Relationship Property advice. Yes, initially it may be a bit awkward discussing the situation but times have changed and many couples now wish they’d had the ‘what happens if we split up’ talk.

It’s important to remember that everything a couple owns during the duration of the relationship could become part of the Relationship Property pool and subject to the 50/50 sharing rules. That can include the income of both parties and any inheritance or gifts received over the years if they have been intermingled with other shared assets.

Having a Relationship Property Agreement (which contracts out of the equal sharing provisions in the Property (Relationships) Act) isn’t about ensuring your partner gets nothing if you separate; it’s about making sure everyone gets a fair deal if that does happen down the line.

So, you don’t need to run around labelling everything ‘yours’ or ‘mine’; you just have to be practical about what you would each take out of the relationship should it end.

It might not be a fun conversation to have, but maybe it’s time to sit down with your partner, look them in the eyes, and say, “Darling, I’ve been thinking……..”

Considering selling your home? or buying?Let my expertise help you achieve your dreams

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE second to none,HONESTY and a name you can trust!

Eric Koh – back doing what he does best!

Last month I spoke about the movement in median house prices since mid 2007 in the Eastern Beaches area and how a new record had been set in February 2013 at $668,000.

I can report that yet again that record has been exceeded with the March 2013 figure coming through at $675,000.

Also interesting is that the average number of days to sell dropped from 35 in February to 30 in March with 203 sales in February increasing to 258 sales for March.

If you have noticed there has been a huge increase in the number of properties being sold by auction you are right.

When analysing the sales statistics for March 2013 (Eastern beaches area) the results show that approximately half of the sales were concluded by auction. This is pretty much double the percentage if you look at March last year.

Auctions are not always a favourite

sale method with buyers – feedback suggests that when searching for a property they really want to see an asking price. But auctions certainly test the market and ensure the vendor gets a fair price.

Last month also saw the introduction of the revamped REAA Code of Conduct come into effect.

The Real Estate Agents Act 2008, which came into effect in late 2009, enacted the formation of the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA), an independent government agency that regulates the New Zealand real estate industry.

It’s been three years since the original Code of Conduct came into effect and the REAA updated it “to better protect consumers and support a professional real estate industry”. We welcome the changes and the increase in confidence that people can have and should expect when dealing with a professional, licensed real estate agent.

– Greg Roy AREINZ, Principal, Total Focus Property Ltd

REAL ESTATE REPORTI don’t think I have ever been as excited to be in the building industry as I am now.

When I left school back in 1981 the country was in the midst of the great divide, with apartheid and sport at the forefront, along with a culture of beer drinking. Hard working tradesmen filled our pubs and building sites. Introducing young apprentices to jugs of Lion Red was a common initiation into the trade.

I suppose I was fortunate in that, on leaving school, I went to work for my stepfather. He employed a large gang of builders who worked hard and played hard. However, my stepfather never tolerated fools and, on occasion, I was made an example of. Lessons in punctuality, attention to detail, customer service and giving everything 100% were learned early on and have remained with me.

So, back to my opening statement: “A New Breed of Builders”.... Product failure, leaky buildings and shoddy carpenters have all contributed to the biggest overhaul New Zealand’s building industry has seen. The result

is a much better understanding of what the industry needs to offer and how to go about it.

Nowadays builders must be licensed, be prepared to take ownership of their work and be proud of it. Our apprentices are the new breed being taught to incorporate these values into their every working day.

Technology, along with application of best trade practices and professionalism with our young apprentices is leaps and bounds ahead of that which I first practised.

Understanding the concept of the saying, “built to last” is something to which our young apprentices and tradesmen aspire.

The construction industry is exciting and I encourage all those young men and women who want to be part of such an exciting industry, to call the BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation) and come on board. See www.bcito.org.nz/apprentices

BMW M135i, New Zealand’s hottest hatch, christened the new, world-class Highlands Motorsport Park near Cromwell recently and in doing so BMW became the fi rst automotive brand to hold a launch at the exciting new circuit.

“BMW was New Zealand’s most popular premium car brand in 2012 so it’s apt it is the fi rst to hold a launch event at the amazing new venue,” said the communications manager of BMW group New Zealand, Ed Finn.

“Highlands has to be one of the most picturesque tracks in the world and was the ideal setting to unleash a range of Ultimate Driving Machines,” said Mr Finn.

The fi rst ever vehicle launch at the new track saw a multitude of BMW models evaluated by a selection of motoring journalists, including an X6 M50d and the iconic M6 Coupe.

The focus of the day was the launch of the new BMW M135i, which BMW says is the ‘only rear-wheel drive hot hatch for true driving enthusiasts’.

Boasting a TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder inline petrol engine producing 235kW, the new model accelerates from 0-100km/h in a blistering 4.9 seconds.

Thanks to BMW Effi cientDynamics technology, which includes an eight-speed automatic sports transmission

and auto stop/start, it can return a combined fuel consumption fi gure of a remarkable 7.5l/100km.

“We have high expectations for the BMW M135i and based on its performance at the 4.6km-long circuit, I’m certain sports enthusiasts will be similarly in awe of its all-round

performance capabilities,” said Mr Finn.

“At $85,900 drive away, it offers unrivalled power, grip and balance. It is the perfect opening to the BMW M Performance range, is big on fun factor and represents outstanding bang for your buck.”

Alfa Romeo 4C celebrates the return of the brand to the world of lightweight sports coupes with an exclusive ‘Launch Edition’.

Designed by Alfa Romeo and

produced in the Maserati plant in Modena, the new mid-engined rear-wheel drive compact coupe is powered by a 240hp (179kW) four-cylinder 1750cc turbocharged petrol engine. Peak torque is 350Nm,

80 per cent of which is available at only 1700rpm. 4C’s chassis is a monocoque made entirely of carbon fi bre with Formula 1 technology, which weighs only 65 kilograms, while the bodywork a low-density, high-strength composite material. Top speed is 250km/h, and acceleration from rest

to 100km/h takes just 4.5 seconds.

Totalling just 400 units in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, 500 in North America and 100 in the rest of the world, the 60,000 Euro (NZ$104,500) 4C launch Edition is available in any colour you want as long as it’s white or red.
