President’s Postbag

Hello fellow Lions

Well the Christmas rush is over, family gatherings dispersed, and the new year started.

This new year 2020 looks like it could be a busy one for our club with events being planned.

There are two things coming up which I wish to draw your attention to - one I have already circulated details of by e mail.

The first Zone 5K meeting under the 105SC re-distribution of districts is to be held on Thursday 27th February 2020 at The Point Eastleigh, starting at 7 pm. We as the largest club in the Zone have undertaken to host this event which is to draw Lions in our zone together and discuss different aspects of clubs’ life. So please make a note in your diaries and give the evening your support.

The 1st Vice District Governor, Lion Steve Petty, of 105SC will be visiting our club on Friday the 6th March 2020 on behalf of the District Governor Lion Jarvis McDonald. This is a business evening so can we please show him that we are the largest zone club by our attendance that evening

That’s all Lions lots more to read in the magazine. (Ed: You are expectant!)

Regards

Lion President Peter

Mini Bus Appeal

A heartfelt thanks to the club for support and to those members who helped us at events to exceed the target set by one Community. I have handed over to one community £21,000 with another £7,000 to be passed on shortly. I am pleased to report the fund is closed now.

Fundraising

Santa Operation: Generally went smoothly apart from drastic increase in numbers, which caused complaints due to the queues. David to meet with Brambridge to see how we can increase throughput for this year but they are talking about returning to the 5 minute slots as in 2018. Need to find way to stop Santa’s coat from gaping open – more buttons / flap? Thanks to Margaret who has washed the Santa Suits.

February Quiz Night: Hall booked for Friday 28th Feb. Posters distributed Teams of 4(up to 6 people) at £6 per person. ALL Lions have 5 posters to place locally, Facebook and Website to be updated and ask for likes and shares for 6 weeks publicity. Prizes / raffle prizes will be required (to Phil H) Letter to request Raffle Prizes will be posted on members area of website so any member can print and use to obtain prizes.

March Musical Extravanganza: British Legion Hall Romsey booked for 28th March 7.00 to 11.00 we now have Newport Session Band (Wayne’s) unnamed folk group (and Southampton Ukelele Jam as line up. £7.50 per ticket. Publicity to be available for mid Feb (6 weeks) and Dave / Charles to produce and distribute along similar lines to quiz.

Barn Dance: Booked for May 2nd. Publicity mid March and list of potential groups who could be interested to be researched (volunteer required) (Dave can provide listings of social groups around the borough, but unsure of suitability)

Eastleigh Fusion Choir Recital: Delayed until December due to other commitments.

Easter Egg Draw: Richard & Phil to try ask in their local areas to check interest. Aiming for Easter 2021.

Fashion Show: Some progress, still checking feasibility.

Local Fetes etc: As Teddy Bear Tombola successful, we aim to attend local fetes /shows with it as an attraction and use it to cover costs of Lions branded Gazebo while publicising Lions and attracting members. Events know about include Fryern Funtasia (May Bank Holiday?); Fair Oak Village Fair (2021); Eastleigh Mela (Sun 19 July?); Bishopstoke Carnival / Fete Sun 13 Sept (Marshals also required); Hiltingbury Extravaganza (Sun. Sept 20?); Pumpkin Festival (Jubilee Sailing Trust Sat 10 Oct, helpers usually required). If anyone knows of any others, please let Anne know.

Gazebo: All agreed best to have a purpose-built rugged gazebo with plenty of “Eastleigh Lions” branding for use at Fetes and other outdoor events (Wyvern 10K for example) as this would provide shade, shelter from rain, Lions visibility and a professional look, (also better if Lions kit than personal). Dave to get quotes.

Other Ideas: Previous ideas were briefly discussed as well as a new one, Longest line attempt…such as chorus line, conga…could enlist Scouts at St George’s Day? as that would give us a couple of hundred for starters. Unable to use Spitfires band as they have several St George’s parades to attend that day.

Next meeting Monday 17th February at Wessex House

Nominations 2020/21

The Nominations Committee for year 20/21 are presently seeking out members who are willing to be nominated to all positions within the club.

All post holders retire annually.

We are keen to have willing and able volunteers, rather than press somebody to hold the post or leave the post vacant.

Please let any one of the nomination committee know if you are willing and able to play a significant part in maintaining a strong active club.

Members can indicate their willingness to serve to the Nominations Committee or get a member to nominate you and another to second the proposal in writing, by March 20th to the Nomination Committee Chair.

An election meeting in May, prior to the normal monthly meeting can be arranged if there is more than one nomination for any post.

The allocation of members to various committees will be made during May by the new committee chairs.

Please indicate your interest to join any one of the committees to the appropriate chairs after April.

Every effort will be made by the chairs to meet such expression of interest for membership, but the necessity for a balance in numbers and time availability, on committees, must be recognised and it may not be therefore possible to accede to every request.

The nomination committee consists of President Peter, David and myself.

Nominations are invited for President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Social Chair, Fund Raising Chair, Community Chair and Membership Chair.

In a ceremony led by Lion President Peter, including readings by Lion Anne and Lion Mark, Ursula Nicol was inducted as a member of Eastleigh Lions Club. She was welcomed again by members, but this time as one of us.

• Eric sought views on the Christmas meal. Generally, the meal was considered very good but the venue left a little to be desired (cold).

member has been identified (first time for same period).

Page 7: Eastleigh Lions Club · 2/1/2020  · (Stuttgart, Germany) first ever Advent Calendar which sold out during the run up to Christmas Eastleigh Lions Club welcomes another new member,

Project Reports:

• Margaret sought advice on the use of credit card facilities (now available) for the Barn Dance. Cash is needed to pay the band, so maybe the use of both should be considered.

• Apologies to Charles for not making it clear that Directors Meeting will be ‘positively’ called. The diary in the magazine is only an indication.

• Nominations for 2020/21. All officers retire. New officer volunteers sought. Please contact either Devan, Peter C or Dave.

• Dave thanked all involved in the Santa rota. Especial thanks to Eric who covered 14 sessions, but it could not have been done without entire Club involvement.

Tail Twister: Jon extracted £7.72 from some Lions (including me). Thanks Jon! The meeting ended at 8.45 pm.

Lion Lion Lion Lion ChrisChrisChrisChris Secretary (still!!)

If you don’t have a team of 4 to enter the quiz on Friday 28th February, then do not

despair. Get as many friends, family members and acquaintances as possible together

and we’ll add any other “odd bods” to make up a team. You never know, you might pick

a really bright star to make your team shine!

Please bring money and team names to February meeting if at all possible.

RDVS (Rouen Doyen Vallee de Seine)

The merger (adoption!) of the Club Rouen Doyen de Normandie with the Club Rouen Vallée de Seine will become more official at the visit of Maryvonne Le Vot (Governor of the Clubs of Normandy) on January 29. On this occasion we will take the opportunity to welcome Coralie Courtaigne-Deslande, as a new member to our RDVS Club. Pictures will follow for the March issue!

Michel Belorgy We also have a request from Rouen from a local family for their son (a French boy of 13 years old) who would like to spend a week in Eastleigh in the Summer. In return the family would host a youngster of similar age in France. The purpose is to improve spoken language and learn each other’s way of life. Any interest please contact Devan asap. Our French Trip is now moved to a possible weekend in late September. This is mainly due to my lack of time to arrange a common date for all Eastleigh members who wanted to travel.

Kornwestheim

A total of ten are booked on the trip in late June to enjoy a weekend of friendship and socialising which will include the German Lions’ Change-Over and Charter celebrations.

Success for the new Kornwestheim Lions’ Advent calendar

We now have the results from the first season of our Kornwestheim Lions Club Advent Calendar. Part of the attraction to purchasers was in the secret of the numbers: behind each door there are up to three prizes. Every day a lottery is held and the number was published in the “Kornwestheimer” newspaper and on "www.lionsclub-kornwestheim.de".

The main prize was on Christmas Eve: A €1000 travel voucher for a trip of your choice. Lions Club member Alfred Waldenmaier presented this main prize from the Advent calendar to the lucky winners, The “H” Family. Son Jan and father Michael are seen accepting the voucher at the travel agency office. (Continued on page 9) 8

Page 9: Eastleigh Lions Club · 2/1/2020  · (Stuttgart, Germany) first ever Advent Calendar which sold out during the run up to Christmas Eastleigh Lions Club welcomes another new member,

(Kornwestheim Continued) The family had bought a handful of calendars to improve their chances. They had not been lucky with any other Advent calendar the 23 days before and so the first prize was not noticed immediately. Only a few days later the mother noticed it.

Sons Jan H. and Martin will now share the prize but as yet they have not decided where they will travel to. But the whole family is sure about one thing: next year they will again buy some Advent calendars from the Lions Club Kornwestheim.

All 1000 calendars were sold and over €3,000 profit was generated for new children's projects in Kornwestheim. The club would like to thank the organizing team led by Alfred and Heiderose.

Community Report

Due to not having any requests, we didn’t meet in January, however we have agreed that The Rainbow Centre (who help children, adults, families and carers affected by neurological conditions).can address our business meeting in February, which I hope you will find interesting. Although the Centre is in Fareham, their “catchment area” includes Eastleigh, and they have a fundraising shop in West End which is also in the borough.

We have been asked, as you will have seen from Dave’s email, to help again with local “Daffodil Appeal” collections for Marie Curie (who provide care and support for those living with a terminal illness). This follows on from a three-year agreement at 105MD to support this particular charity, and we have been involved in collections in Eastleigh and Winchester over the last few years.

Page 10: Eastleigh Lions Club · 2/1/2020  · (Stuttgart, Germany) first ever Advent Calendar which sold out during the run up to Christmas Eastleigh Lions Club welcomes another new member,

(Community Continued from Page 9) Currently they are looking for help to man the Eastleigh Town Centre collection day, Saturday 29th February, so what better way to celebrate “Leap Year Day” than to parade around the town centre wearing a silly yellow daffodil hat and your Lions high Viz?

They have also just been granted Saturday 28th March at the Asda superstore in Chandlers Ford. This is on a day when they are already collecting at Brambridge and in Chandlers Ford centre, so again, we could provide a very useful gap filler to enable them to collect at Asda. A total of 8 volunteers will be needed in shifts of 2 hours from 9 to 5 O’clock. Again, easiest to sign up on the Marie Curie website, link https://collect.mariecurie.org.uk/register/collections

They also hope to get a date to collect at Tesco Winnall, and we have been involved with this collection in past years, so we may also be asked this year if Tesco provide them with a date.

If you do sign up to help them, please let me know, as we record all community / service provided by the club in stats to District, Multiple District and LCI and just like the pennies, every hour counts!

Social and similar activities for those with time to spare!

Welcome. After working our way through Chinese and Haggis (Ed: Not at the same time) we turn our attentions to (a nearly) Valentines night at East Avenue for a romantic evening with the students (food wise of course!). Not strictly Social, but fund raising as well. We have the quiz at The Railway Institute on Friday 28th February (leap into that). On Sunday March 29th there will be a music night in Romsey. Phil H. has put in a lot of effort to make these two events work. We have been invited to two Charters, Fareham Lions V.E. Dance on Saturday 8th February and Ringwood Lions 50th Charter on the 28th March, (I wonder where that came from…?) It would be good if we could get up a table to support other clubs. It looks as if all we do is eat! So we have planned a walk in North Hampshire for April. Chow for now
