10 Ways to Prevent Summer Slide www.littlescholarsllc.wordpress.com

Did you know that children can lose up to three months of academic progress over the summer? Over 100 years of research continually shows this trend.

Here are ten things you can do to help your child avoid the summer slide.

1.Read EVERY day! Read non-fiction, fiction, ebooks, poetry, newspapers and read out loud! For most children, twenty minutes is an appropriate amount of time to read for a child who is an independent reader. Most libraries have a wonderful summer reading program with incentives and rewards for books read over the summer.

2.Cook with your children. This is one of the best ways to integrate math, reading and following directions. Let your child design the menu too! Help your child put together their favorite recipes in a cookbook.

3.Plant a garden. Your child will gain responsibility and pride as they watch their plants grow and thrive.

4.Take a field trip to a museum, zoo or local park with walking trails. Keep a journal about your travels.

5.Learn a new word each week! Hang it on the fridge and see who can use it the most times throughout the week.

6.Enroll in a quality summer program that will provide your child with opportunities to build their critical thinking skills.

7.Play quick games with flashcards like Math War or Concentration to keep math skills sharp.

8.Listen to Audio Books during your road trip.

9.Take pictures and make a summer scrapbook.

10.Did I mention READ?! If your child does nothing else this summer make sure he/she is reading!

Just like with playing a sport, Reading and Math are skills that must be practiced. When a child spends hours a day hitting a baseball, swimming, shooting a basketball, they will progress. But say he then stops hitting balls for three months or takes a few months off from swimming. Will he hit a ball on the first swing? Will he swim as efficiently as before? No, but if he practices a few times a week, will he be able to regain the previously learned skills relatively quickly? Yes! It is important to keep your child’s mind engaged over the summer so they will not fall victim to the summer slide.

Playing outdoors is a form of exercise that promotes well-being and wholesome physical development. Children are naturally drawn to active play outdoors: it allows them to explore their environment, develop muscle strength and coordination, and gain self-confidence. Playing actively outdoors also increases flexibility, fine and gross motor skills and is related to the development of a wide variety of physical skills, including those involved in sports.

Children have a great need for physical exercise and activity and a chance to use their muscles to run, swing, jump, skate and ride a bike, and to be out in the fresh air and sunshine (appropriately protected from the sun’s rays, of course). They like to use their whole body when they play outdoors, and find such physical activities interesting and challenging.

When children are pushed in a swing, or when they propel a swing themselves, they engage all of their muscles to hold on, balance and coordinate their body to the rhythm of moving back and forth. Swinging provides children with first-hand knowledge and experience of cause and effect and of understanding spatial learning,

such as up and down and back and forth. Also, while swinging, children get a chance to see the world from a new perspective. To provide comfort and security, use a swing with a back support and a child

restraint. For the littlest ones, start out slowly and push from the front,

so your face is in full view. Play a peek-a-boo game for even more fun!

Toys that require balance and coordination, such as skates, scooters and bikes, teach children new skills, encourage the development of self-confidence and satisfy their interest in exploration. Choose sports equipment that has a grow-with-me feature, going from beginner to advanced, so children have the opportunity to master skills at their own pace. The beginner mode will give children that extra boost of confidence they need when learning a new skill. As children progress to the advanced mode, they can practice their newly acquired skills and try new and exciting challenges when they’re ready. - See more at: http://www.fisher-price.com/en_US/playtime/parenting/articlesandadvice/articledetail.html?article=tcm:169-20482#sthash.6zlgMnK0.dpuf

10 Reasons Why You Should Read to Your KidsWhat’s the most important trait you’d like to develop in your child? If you’re like most parents, intelligence is probably at the top of your list.

We all want bright, smart children, which is why we spend so much time choosing the right schools and making sure teachers are exceeding expectations. But remember: as a parent, you have the power to boost your children’s learning potential simply by making books an integral

part of their lives.

We all know reading to our kids is a good thing – but are you familiar with the specific advantages you toddler or preschool-age child can receive by being exposed to the merits of reading? Below are some benefits that highlight the importance of reading to your child between the

ages of two and five.

1. A stronger relationship with you. As your child grows older, he’ll be on the move – playing, running, and constantly exploring his environment. Snuggleing up with a book lets the two of you slow down and recaptures that sweet, cuddly time you enjoyed when he was a baby. Instead of being seen as a chore or a task, reading will become a nurturing activity that will bring the two of you closer together.

2. Academic excellence. One of the primary benefits of reading to toddlers and preschoolers is a higher aptitude for learning in general. Numerous studies have shown that students who are exposed to reading before preschool are more likely to do will in all facets of formal education. After all, if a student struggles to put together words and sentences, how can he be expected to grasp the math, science and social concepts he’ll be presented with when he begins elementary school?

3. Basic speech skills. Throughout toddlerhood and preschool, your child is learning critical language and enunciation skills. By listening to you read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, your child is reinforcing the basic sounds that form language. “Pretend reading” – when a toddler pages through a book with squeals and jabbers of delight – is a very important pre-literacy activity. As a preschooler, your child will likely begin sounding out words on his own.

4. The basics of how to read a book. Children aren’t born with an innate knowledge that test is read from left to right, or that the words on a page are separate from the images, Essential pre-reading skills like these are among the major benefits of early reading.

5. Better communication skills. When you spend time reading to toddlers, they’ll be much more likely to express themselves and relate to others in a healthy way. By witnessing the interactions between the characters in the books you read, as well as the contact with you during story time, your child is gaining valuable communication skills.

6. Mastery of language. Early reading for toddlers has been linked to a better grasp of the fundamentals of language as they approach school age.

7. More logical thinking skills. Another illustration of the importance of reading to children in their ability to grasp abstract concepts, apply logic in various scenarios, recognize cause and effect, and utilize good judgment. As your toddler or preschooler begins to relate the scenarios in books to what’s happening in his own world, he’ll become more excited about the stories you share.

8. Acclimation to new experiences. As your child approaches a major developmental milestone or a potentially stressful experience, sharing a relevant story is a great way to help ease the transition. For instance, if your little one is nervous about starting preschool, reading a story dealing with this topic shows her that her anxiety is normal.

9. Enhanced concentration and discipline. Toddlers may initially squirm and become distracted during story time, but eventually they’ll learn to stay put for the duration of the book. Along with reading comprehension comes a stronger self-discipline, longer attention span, and better memory retention, all of which will serve your child well when she enters school.

10. The Knowledge that reading is fun! Early reading for toddlers helps them view books as an indulgence, not a chore. Kids who are exposed to reading are much more likely to choose books over video games, television, and other forms of entertainment as they grow older.

Books have the power to benefit toddlers and preschoolers in a myriad of ways. As a parent, reading to your child is one of the most important things you can do to prepare him with a foundation for academic excellence.
