I love the customs of Easter – chocolate bunnies, colored eggs, children decked out in new clothes for the sake of their parents. But there is much more at stake here than candy and frilly dresses.

Easter was a surprise. It was not what they expected. The women who approached the tomb early in the morning did so with sadness and grief. The tomb was the confirma-tion that the world finally will beat mercy and goodness to death. But somewhere along the path to the tomb, they left one world and entered another. As one commentator puts it, “they left the old world, where hope is in constant danger, and might makes right and peace has little chance, and the weak always suffer under some Pontius Pilate, and people hatch murderous plots, and dead people stay dead…they enter the startling and breath taking world of resurrection and live.” The fact that the tomb was empty turned the world upside down.

Flannery O’Connor’s short story “The Misfit,” is set in Georgia. A family of four, the grandmother plans a vacation to Florida. On the way they have a wreck. Everyone is okay, but as their car sits in the ditch, a hearse pulls up and three men get out. Escape convicts. One of them is called the Misfit.

Knowing his brutal reputation, the grandmother tries to engage him in conversation. She knows he will kill them all. She tries to sweet talk him, bribe him, but nothing works. Then she turns the conversation to a religious bent, calling him one of her ba-bies. She starts crying out “Jesus, Jesus.”

Before shooting her, The Misfit says, “Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead,” the Misfit continued, “and He shouldn’t have done it. He shown everything off balance. If He did what He said, then it’s nothing for you to do but throw away everything and follow Him, and if He didn’t, then it’s nothing for you to do but enjoy the few minutes you got left the best way you can by killing somebody or burning down his house or doing some other meanness to him. No pleasure but meanness,” he said and his voice had become almost a snarl.

Easter throws everything off balance. It turns the world upside down. Hate is answered with love. Death is overcome by life. Evil is turned to good.

Christ is Risen. He is Risen indeed!
