Strengthen the Church Offering
Each day, visions and dreams are created
in the hearts of many in the United Church
of Christ. Through the Strengthen the
Church offering, they can become a reality.
As God calls our congregations to be
church in new ways, your gift will plant new
churches, awaken new ideas in existing
churches, and develop spiritual life in our
youth and young adults. Because of this of-
fering, many more will hear the good news
that “God is still speaking.” Offering enve-
lopes are also available in the pews. We
will dedicate this offering June 4, 2017

you for your goodness and care.

What Do YOU See? According to a story I recently heard, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson
were on a camping trip. They had retired early but had both awakened
around 2 a.m. With a clear, star-studded night sky above them, Holmes
asked, “Watson, what do you see?”
“Well,” said the doctor, “I see thousands of stars!”
“And what does that mean to you?” pressed the detective. “I suppose it
means that we are most fortunate to inhabit God’s great universe as intelli-
gent observers. Although we are small in His eyes, we are blessed with pow-
ers of reasoning that permit us to make our way in this world of blind greed
and criminal enterprises.
And surely a night so clear and beautiful as this is a portent of another
beautiful day for us to enjoy tomorrow, dear friend. What does it mean to
you, Holmes?”
To me, Watson, it means that –while we were sleeping – someone has stolen
our tent!”
Similarly, while we fortunate people of 2017 reflect on our educational, sci-
entific, and technological achievements, we may be overlooking the fact
that something has been taken from us. Things like innocence, propriety,
and decency.
Front page headlines remind us of government mistakes, morals declining,
leaders resigning over adultery, substance addictions or theft. Yet polls tell
us the majority of Americans couldn’t care less about our leader’s morality –
so long as the economy remains healthy. I do remember Jesus asking the
question, “What will a man give in exchange for his soul?” The idea that a
bull-market economy makes basic questions of morality unimportant reduces
ethics to a business proposition. Have we really come to that point in Ameri-
can culture? The nation built upon the Ten Commandments as our moral code
and laws of the land?
~6~ Trinity United Church of Christ, Mt. Vernon, IN June 2017
The tent of objective moral norms by which to frame and judge human con-
duct has been stolen from this generation. Not only the tent but the pegs
of objective truth necessary to hold it in place have been ripped from the
ground. Indeed, press our thought leaders (i.e., spin doctors) and you will
hear them explain in condescending tones that there is no “real” ground of
history and meaning beneath our feet. There is only the ongoing process of
interpretation, no definite or fixed meaning to anything.
The sins in the Bible are still sins, drunkenness, adultery, co-habitation,
cursing, taking Gods name in vein, lying, gossiping are all still sins in God’s
law and to Bible living, believing Christians.
In a commencement speech at Stanford University on June 14, 1998, Ted
Koppel counseled graduates: “Aspire to decency. Practice civility toward one
another. Admire and emulate ethical behavior wherever you find it. Apply a
rigid standard of morality to your lives; and if, periodically, you fail – as you
surely will – adjust your lives, not the standards.” That’s good advice for
people of all ages and backgrounds.
Before we speculate on the ethereal meaning of the stars, Dr. Watson, we
must pay attention to finding the tent that has disappeared. We need to
put it back in place.
Think about it,
