Easter in Romania is closely related to the faith. We do not eat eggs, meat or anything that comes from an animal for several couple weeks before the holiday to prepare ourselves for forgiveness of sins.

A few days before Easter we make cakes called “cozonaci” , a kind of bread with cheese and eggs called "pasca " and the last thing we have to do is to paint the eggs.

Knocking eggs Knocking eggs is a primordial sacrifice decorated by red painting, symbol of the sacrifice of Jesus. Knocking eggs is allowed to believers after the Resurrection of the Saviour on Easter night.

As a general rule, the first knock is made by the elderly man at the

table. The older person knock the head egg partner kept saying the famous words "Christ is risen!", while he will respond with the

words "He is truly risen!."

Egg decoration is an ancient custom in Romanian tradition. Painted eggs are a testament to the customs, beliefs and customs of Easter, representing a specific spiritual element Romanian culture.

Painted egg gives us joy, wonder, humility, reconciliation, because the ornamentation of fact, it operates with symbols (sun, moon, cross, etc..)

With patterns from nature (plants, animals, household items) .

To paint eggs isn’t simple. The white egg is covered with a wax model

with a thin brass tube which is having inside a hair of pig.

The wax protects the egg from the yellow paint that will be applied and then the wax model will continue then we sink the egg in red paint and the last bath of paint is black.

A traditional way to paint the eggs is with natural paint from onion sheets. You can paint the eggs with more natural patterns using a leaf covering it while the egg is painted and after that it remains the leaf form as it removed from the egg.

Here are some tips if you want to you to do this at home!

How to make the paint: a tablespoon of salt and 2 tablespoons of vinegar to 2.5 liters of water, but also onion sheets.

Then remove the eggs and after they dry erase them with a sponge and a little oil to make them shiny. If you want to make them with leaf form you have to introduce the egg in a sock tights with a leaf. Good Luck!

Place eggs in paint and leave for 10-15 minutes after water begins to boil. Then let the eggs in water for 5 minutes after turning off the fire.
