The East Portland Community Center educational preschool program is based on the philosophy that children develop & grow at their own rate. In order to grow & develop their senses a child must “play” by exploring & manipulating their environment. To enhance this experience, the classroom is set up in learning centers that enable children to explore different areas of development such as fine motor, socialization, pre-math, pre-reading & listening skills. Preschool for your child is the foundation for academic learning. The East Portland Community Center Preschool Program follows the traditional school schedule with children enrolled September through May.

Teacher Nancy Jameson offers this exciting NEW opportunity for supervised play time for your preschool aged

kiddos, giving YOU a little time off.

Sports Classes for Parent/Child Although we register only the child, parent or caregiver participation is essential in these classes. The Parent/Child sequence of classes have been developed with your child’s best interest in mind.

Balls, Balls, Bonanza helps introduce your child to the world of physical development in a low-structure, colorful, varied program, utilizing all types of balls, games & sports. This class gathers together to stretch& take roll call. Participants are then

encouraged to participate in stations designed to strengthen, develop & encourage positive attitude & outlook on exercise, movement & play. Some children repeat this class several times.

Games, Games, Games offers activities that are more structured than the “Balls” class, but with easier directions & rules than team sports. The child’s listening & communication skills take on more importance in this class.

Super Sports Time is an excellent “next class” for those young children who have taken the Ball! Balls! Bonanza class & are ready to apply those ball handling skills to specific sports. Listening & communication skills contribute to a successful experience.

Soccer First Timers, Baseball Lil’ Batters & Basketball for Little Hoopers offer a more structured focus for the young athlete, with emphasis placed on proper sports fundamentals, conditioning, teamwork & sportsmanship.

Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide.

How it worksFirst choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.

A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible.

If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.

Aikido Yoshokai Aikido, a form of Japanese Budo, is a path to self improvement based on martial art techniques. The goal of our study is not to defeat or control others, but to defeat and control our own egos. Students work as partners to study dynamic throws and powerful pins. It may look like they are fighting, but they are actually learning how to fit together and create harmony instead of conflict. We study harmony in Aikido so that we may learn to live in harmony with nature and the world.

Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes. No jewelry. Uniforms required only for testing.

Testing & Promotions: Testing fees start at $5, testing & promotion is not a requirement of the program. At time of first test, students join the National Association (Adults $35/year, Youth $20/year). There are no tournaments or competitions.
