Friends of Lookout Tower to Host Salute to the Music and Memories of WWII

CAPE MAY – The Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower present an educa-tional program entitled, “First Annual Veteran’s Day Salute: Music and Memories of World War II.” Members of the public are invited to the program on Sat., Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. at Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Ave.

Hear the upbeat sounds of Glenn Miller, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, Kay Kaiser, Vaughn Monroe and the Andrews Sisters, who gave voice to American exuberance and hope despite seemingly insurmountable odds in the battle for world peace. Two men, Vince Panzano and Jim Rodan, who served in World War II campaigns in Europe, the Mediterranean

and the Pacif-ic will discuss their eyewit-ness accounts to some of the most impor-tant events of the 20th cen-tury, including D-Day, Sicily, Leyte Gulf , Okinawa and the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. They will re-late encounters with some of the most historic fi gures of the time, including Presi-dent Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Admission is free for Friends and $5 for mem-bers of the public. Join the Friends of the World War II

Tower and help plan and attend future ex-citing pro-grams.

A d u l t s attending are asked to bring a young per-son with them so the group c a n a d -vance one

of its main goals, which is developing in the younger generation an understand-ing and appreciation of not only Cape May’s important role in World War II, but of the traits of patriotism, loyalty, and self-sacrifice so characteristic of the people of these war years. Upcoming Friends of the World War II Lookout Tow-er events will be previewed and light refreshments will be served at the program.

The World War II Look-out Tower, located on Sun-set Boulevard, was used for spotting enemy ships dur-ing World War II and aim-

ing guns to fi re on them. MAC restored the tower in 2008-09 and opened it to the public in April, 2009. Family members can honor loved ones through memorial plaques mounted permanently at the site. The World War II Tower is open to the public Satur-days through Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) is a multifaceted not-for-profi t organization committed to promoting the preservation, interpre-tation, and cultural enrich-ment of the Cape May region for its residents and visitors. MAC member-ship is open to all. For information about MAC’s year-round schedule of tours, festivals, and special events call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278, or visit MAC’s Web site at www.capemaymac.org. dogs, cats, turtles, rabbits and even jumping contests for frogs but nothing for white mice, hamsters or Guinea Pigs. The Quiet Festival should remedy this as part of its public service, outreach program.

White Mice and Ham-sters are nocturnal and usu-ally sleep during the day…which makes them perfect for the Quiet Festival. The

pets will be judged for their lack of energy, unusual sleeping positions and gen-eral disinterest in their surroundings. An exercise wheel will be available for any hamster or mouse that feels the need to abandon its instincts and work out. Guinea Pigs are not noc-turnal so will be judged for their determination on the wheel, appearance, personality and interest in their surroundings. There will be an optional category for costumes.

There will be prizes and certifi cates for all entrants and a free photo of their entrant will be given to all pet owners. Ribbons will be awarded to winners and a special citation will be given to Best of Show.

Quiet Festival organizers will recruit hamsters, white mice, Guinea Pigs and their owners with an effective whispering campaign that will bypass more vociferous outlets like Facebook, My Space, Linkedin, Twitter, and other social network outlets.

“We’re going to contact the schools, pet shops and individuals through per-sonal, good old fashioned one on one meetings and also use our local newspa-pers, radio and TV,” said Soifer.

“We believe this event will add a dimension of quiet excitement and hu-mor to the festival. We urge hamsters, white mice Guinea Pigs and their care takers to sign up immedi-ately.”

Once again, the Chal-lenge will be held at the Aquatic and fi tness Center, 17th and Simpson Ave., in Ocean City on Sat. Nov.12 at 10:30 a.m. Those inter-ested (and who wouldn’t be?) may register quietly by calling 609-525-9300. After hours and on week-ends, call 609-364-4010 or email [email protected]. Enthusiasts may also sign up at City Hall Annex, 901 Asbury Ave., in Ocean City. A complete schedule of Quiet Festival events may be obtained by con-tacting any of the above.

Old Time Country and Bluegrass Concert at WheatonArts

MILLVILLE – As a host of the “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music” exhibition in the Museum of Ameri-can Glass, Nov. 8 through Dec. 31, WheatonArts will present a wide spectrum of public programs including two concerts and a series of workshops exploring the instrument making process. The fi rst concert, Old Time Country and Bluegrass, is Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Event Center.

Iveta Pirgova, Folklife C e n t e r D i r e c t o r a t WheatonArts, explains, “The origins of modern country music can be traced to folk songs and ballads brought to North America by settlers from the British Isles. In America, musi-cians all over played coun-try music and added their own creativity and regional playing styles to develop new sounds and rhythms. Jimmie Rodgers, a guitar player and singer from Mississippi, added the in-fl uences of blues musicians to his music and became country music’s fi rst major star. In the West, musicians combined Mexican music with American country music to create country western or western swing music. In the East, musi-cians in the Appalachians used faster rhythms and vocal harmonies to create a style known as bluegrass.”

The Concert Schedule:Steve Byrne – Byrne has

been playing fi nger picked acoustic ragtime blues on many period guitars over a 40 year career. Although he plays several styles, his love is the Piedmont style from the Southeastern coastal

region of the U.S. Pied-mont style is an imitation of the piano; the thumb plays the left hand of the piano (base) and the fi ngers play the right (melody). He’s played many ven-ues over the years. Some of his favorites are the New Jersey Folk Festival, Bridgeton Folk Festival and several “Guitar Wizards” concerts at Cumberland County College. During his performance Byrne will talk about the people who wrote and played these wonderful songs and the songs themselves.

Bel Aire Boys – “This bluegrass band originated around three years ago to play for our own entertain-ment, and the entertain-ment of anybody wanting to hear good, traditional bluegrass music,” says band member Jim LaFer-riere. It is composed of fi ve “all-star” caliber musicians who have been playing bluegrass for over 25 years. They are: Rich Favretto on banjo; John Brown Jr. on guitar and lead vocals; Ron Hall on vocals and mando-lin; Paul Unkert on upright bass and vocals; LaFerriere on vocals and guitar. They

have put together a set, which will include both tra-ditional (Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and Carter Fam-ily music) and a few more modern, yet still traditional sounding songs such as Bob Dylan’s instrumental “Nashville Skyline Rag,” showcasing the talents of the entire band.

The Towheads – The Towheads is a band of sib-

lings who play traditional Irish music. Haley, nine years-old, is a three-time Mid-Atlantic Regional Un-der 12 Irish Fiddle Cham-pion, and has successfully represented the U.S. in the All Ireland competition for the past three years. She’s also won various other

Jazz Festival Aiming for Spring 2012 ReturnCAPE MAY — One of the

most popular, professional, and well-attended events held in this city was the bi-annual Cape May Jazz Festival, which recently ceased after running for 17 years. But there is a strong push to have the music resurrected, and perhaps as early as next spring.

“New people are reor-ganizing the festival,” said Bob Steenrod, the festival’s program director. “There’s a new board in place, and efforts are underway to get the funding that will return the festival.”

That fundraising begins in earnest Nov. 11 and 12 as Cabanas and Martini Beach presents the 2011 Cape May Jazz Fest Fund-raiser for the “Friends of Cape May Jazz.”

The two day program features local jazz enter-tainers. On Friday, Geno White appears at Martini Beach at 6 p.m., and The Tom Larsen Blues Band performs at Cabanas at 9:30 p.m.

Saturday it’s Frank Bey at Cabana’s at 1 p.m. and Blue Bone at 9:30 p.m. Eddie Morgan performs at Martini Beach at 6 p.m.

“Our goal is to raise mon-ey to get the festival back on its feet,” said Steenrod. “We plan to have a festival

next April and again next fall. And we intend to keep the prices reasonable.”

It took more than a fal-tering economy to kill the festival, according to Steen-rod, and one key factor was the demise of Cape May’s convention hall.

“When the hall closed,” he explained, “we had to look for other venues, and that took money. It took a couple of years to get in this kind of fi nancial trouble, and of course, the bad economy didn’t help.

“I’d say there is an 80-20 (percent) chance that there will be a festival in April,” he added. “The board is working hard to make this happen. They’re getting the bills paid, and our creditors are being cooperative.”

The best way for jazz pa-trons to help out is to also help themselves by attend-ing one (or all) of the shows

“This fundraiser is a sig-nal that the festival is com-ing back,” said Steenrod. “Cape May needs this; the Jazz Festival is a real asset for the city.”
