Student Perspective

ALL SCHOOL TALENT SHOW By: Alida Blendonohy

December the 21st was a day

marked with excitement, which was a result of anticipation for Christ-

mas, as it was the last day before

winter break.

It was also the day of the first

East Lake Academy all school talent show.

Grades K through eighth were represented, each perform-ing a song, skit or dance.

An example of one of the acts is the second grade. The students in Miss Munda’s class recited scripture fitting

for the season.

The eighth grade students acted out a mock geography class accompanied by several teacher impersonations.

The sixth graders danced with teacher Ms. Kinzler, and although all had fun, the first place title was awarded

to the first grade, which performed a dance.

I am certain the students appreciated the talent show,

which proved to be a success, and thought it a fun way to kick off Christmas Break.

TESTING IN By: Mary Claire Simutis

On Saturday, January 12th, most of

the 8th grade students took the

High School Placement Test at vari-ous Catholic high schools in the ar-

ea.

These high schools included:

Loyola Academy, Carmel Catholic High School and Regina Dominican High School.

All of the high schools administer the same test on the

same day. The test itself contained four sections and a writing prompt.

Eighth graders were tested on vocabulary, quantitative reasoning, math, reading comprehension and language skills.

The writing prompt asked the question "What is your fa-vorite class?" We had to not only answer the question but also support our responses. It was important to struc-

ture our short essays properly. According to those of us who took the test, overall it was successful and ran

smoothly.

We will be receiving our test results some time next

month. In the meantime, we will be anxiously awaiting the news!

OUR LAST CHRISMTAS PAGEANT By: Karina Kavanagh

On December 20, East Lake hosted its annual Christmas show! Directed by Miss Sponseller, Mrs. Fuller, and Senora Finlayson, the pageant was an amazing success.

The eighth graders had fun singing and dancing to Feliz Navidad at the end... those are the sorts of memories we will take with us next year when we leave.

The crowd loved a new Spanish addition to the pageant, Las Posadas, directed by Senora Finlayson, which the selected

students enjoyed very much.

However, that night was bittersweet for the eighth grade. Knowing that after that night we would never be on the ELA

pageant stage again was a little upsetting.

The evening certainly made plenty of memories!

Christmas Pageant

Miss Sponseller

The Christmas Pageant was a fun and enter-taining night, thanks to all the hard work of

our teachers and students. This year we were

fortunate enough to once again use a Catholic Podcast called The Festival of Lessons and Carols to present the Christmas story in a dif-ferent way. This service allowed the students

to recount the Fall, the promise of the Messiah, the Incarnation, and end with the Great Commission to preach the Good News. It was incredible to see even the littlest of our students help tell this story to

our parents and guests!

Each student had the opportunity to contribute to their class’s Lesson,

whether it was in memorizing his/

her lines or allowing their actions to help portray their message. Each

class did a wonderful job reminding us just how important Christmas is.

This year we were excited to also include our Spanish Program in the

Pageant, with their first-ever recrea-tion of Las Posadas, the Latin American tradition that combines song and dialogue

between Mary, Joseph, and the Innkeepers. A group of Middle School students, led by Señora Finlayson, did a beautiful job honoring this wonderful tradition.

Thank you again to our wonderful volunteers, specifically

I hope you all had a blessed and relaxing Christmas break!

MRS. PAGANO who helped coach each class in their singing

DR. RASGADO and his beautiful piano playing

MRS. FEDYSZYN and her help in designing costumes

MRS. FULLER AND SEÑORA FINLAYSON who were my dedicated committee members,

and

ALL OTHER VOLUNTEERS whose time and donations helped make the

evening a wonderful success.

East Lake Academy’s Eleventh Annual Benefit & Gala

“Growing in grace and harmony”

Planning for the Eleventh Annual Benefit and Gala are un-derway. On March 16, 2013, East Lake Academy cel-

ebrates growing in grace and harmony. This annual fund-raising event offers East Lake Academy families and their

esteemed guests an exclusive opportunity to visit "Place de la Musique" in Barrington Hills.

Don’t miss your chance to tour The Sanfillipo Estate, known worldwide for its magnificent collections of beautiful-

ly restored antique music machines, phonographs, arcade and gambling machines, chandeliers, art glass, theatre pipe

organ, and more.

Your guests will be honored that you invited them to such a prestigious event.

Please visit

http://www.placedelamusique.org/

to learn more about this exciting location!

The student campaign is underway with a tighter timeframe this year. Because our event is earlier than previous years,

our deadline for advertising is sooner to allow time for design, proofing and printing of our auction catalog. Please help

us stay on schedule with prompt submissions of friendship ads, underwriting and auction donations.

Don’t miss the underwriting opportunity for you or your company to help offset many auction expenses including decorations,

valet and shuttle service, audio visual equipment,

class projects, teacher time,

faculty auction attendance and more!

Please look for weekly email updates on the gala and our student campaign. The committee is planning a memorable

event for parents, grandparents, friends and colleagues to attend.

Thank you to those who participated in our survey and provided valuable feedback; we are keeping your opinions in mind as we work through details.

If you have questions, please email the committee at [email protected].

4TH GRADERS EMBRACE NEW TECHNOLOGY The Fourth Graders have really embraced the new technology in their class-

room. Mrs. Biasco uses the Active Board in class, accompanied by Active Expressions (hand held devices that can be used to answer questions from the Active Board, giving instantaneous results) as a tool to reinforce

various subject matters.

The students are able to answer

multiple choice questions using

their devices.

BOYS’ STRIVE CLUB HAVING AN IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY David Young

On December 14th, the Boys’ STRIVE Club hosted an evening of food, fun and spir-itual discussion with 15 under-privileged boys from inner-city Chicago.

Each year, we host boys from the Chicago Youth Programs (CYP) charity and offer

a Christmas celebration to brighten their holidays and share our faith. This year’s events included the viewing of a short inspirational film, lots of pizza and cookies,

and of course some gigantic games of dodgeball.

The evening concluded with a gift exchange where our boys generously provided toys and games for our guests. The CYP bus left East Lake Academy with many smiling faces and it was a great way for the STRIVE Boys to prepare for the

Christmas season.

One important aspect of the Boys’ STRIVE Program is our focus on feeding the boys’ need for competitive activities and

the desire to overcome obstacles and challenges. Each year, we conduct a Tower Building competition where the boys

separate into teams and utilize a minimal amount of materials to build the tallest tower possible.

Our STRIVE club focuses on a different virtue with every 4-segment campaign. We are now focusing on Kindness and

will be learning about St. John Bosco later this month and also conducting an off-site apostolic activity with the Feed My Starving Children organization in February.

If your boys are not already participating in the STRIVE program and you would like to learn more,

please contact ELA Dad Dave Young at [email protected]

ELA Dad Chris Ling looks over his team’s masterpiece

at the Boys’ STRIVE annual tower building competition.

ELA Dad Dan Christoffel and his team hoist up a

monstrous tower of cardboard and aluminum foil –

Unfortunately the tower was unable to stand for one

minute and didn’t qualify to win the competition.

STRIVE Boys present gifts to our guests from Chicago

Youth Programs during our Christmas celebration.

On Friday, January 11th, we broke the group into 6 teams and

provided them with just a single corrugate box, some aluminum foil and some packing tape for their towers. The teams had 60 minutes to construct their towers and every team took a differ-ent strategy to build the tallest tower possible to win. Many teams aspired for heights over 10 feet! Unfortunately, the tow-er had to stand alone for at least one minute and several tow-ers crumbled before the minute expired.

Congratulations to our Mission Corp Worker assistant Kenny, and his team of Colin McDermott, Joaquin Christoffel, Anthony DiCara and Justin Young for winning the competition this year. Honorable mention goes to STRIVE Dad Dan Christoffel and his team of Matthew Kowalski, Danny VanCamp, Tommy VanCamp, Michael Piper and Zach Young for building a tre-mendous 16 foot tower that probably would have stood had the team had a few more minutes of time to secure the base.

January is a busy month for East Lake Academy. School is back in full swing, the students have

returned to the academic rigor of their routines and the teachers are closing out their grade books for second quarter.

The Admissions office has tours lined up for nearly every day of January and the Development

office is busy finishing the Annual Fund.

All of us are excited for the upcoming events of Catholic Schools Week, January 27th through February 1st. Mass with Bishop Rassas, Teacher Swap, Spelling Bee and various guest speakers are just some of the events on the itinerary for the last week of January.

Celebrating Catholic education is an important time because our Catholic schools are such a gift to

each of us. If we strive to keep Christ at the very center of our lives, Christ must be at the center of all we do. Catholic

Education does just that, keeping Christ at the center of the education and formation of our children.

At East Lake Academy, Jesus Christ IS at the heart of who we are and what we do.

We are blessed with the opportunity to lead Christ’s youngest apostles, our students, only closer to Him as we guide

them through their educative process. May God continue to bless your work as the primary formators of your children and may He bless us as we continue that mission here at East Lake Academy.

Principal Update

Mrs. Patel

Principal

Miss McCarthy

The students and staff of ELA are looking forward to celebrating Catholic Schools Week! This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools Raise the Standards”.

At East Lake Academy, we promote high academic standards along with our

Catholic identity. This week reminds us of what a blessing it is to be part of a Catholic school. We learn how to follow Christ, promoting values that stu-

dents can take beyond the classroom and uphold their whole life.

The festivities of Catholic Schools Week will begin January 26th and conclude on February 2nd.

To begin our week, the East Lake community is invited to attend Mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Lake Forest during the

weekend of January 26th-27th. As stated in the catechism, the Eucharist is our source and summit so there could be no better way to begin this week of celebration! During the school week, a fun activity has been planned for each day:

Monday There will be a student favorite, the teacher swap.

Tuesday Spanish Heritage Night will be celebrated.

Wednesday Bishop Rassas will be here to celebrate our all school Mass and we will have guest seminarians as well as consecrated women visiting the classrooms.

Thursday Students will gather in the gym for a game of Faith Trivia.

Friday We will conclude our festivities with a pep rally!

During this assembly, we will announce the winning categories for the class door decorating contest, reveal the results

of our staff display, play a student-teacher basketball game of Knockout and enjoy a special treat together!

Guest speakers Pete Mockaitis and Jeremy Pitt-Payne will also be joining us for this special week.

Pete Mockaitis is a national speaker and author who writes on teamwork goals and accountability. He will be discuss-ing this topic with the middle school students, relating it to our goal of becoming saints who truly live out our Catholic

faith.

Jeremy Pitt-Payne, the magician from Britian, entertains audiences while sharing his Catholic Faith. He particularly enjoys introducing students to saints like John Bosco, the patron saint of magicians!

As you can see, it will be a busy week of celebrating!

Happy New Year to the families and friends of East Lake Academy!

January brings so many graces and certainly the Admissions office has been blessed with many inquiries, visitors, applications and evaluations.

In honor of Catholic Schools Week, East Lake Families “Kick-Off” with an all school family visit to St. Patrick’s, Lake Forest on January 25th and 26th. It is edifying to see so many East

Lake students in uniform during mass at St. Pat’s. What a wonderful way to celebrate together and show our support for the value of Catholic Education.

Prospective parents will hear presentations from Mr. Calk our Founder and President, the Staff and Faculty, and Admissions.

Parents will also be able to visit the classrooms.

Encourage your friends not to miss this informative event.

As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.” John 17:18

According to a HUGGIES study, one in three American mothers cut back on basic essentials such as food, utilities or child care to afford enough diapers for their children.

The students of East Lake Academy will help mothers avoid this difficult decision, as we partner with the Simutis

family, in memoriam of their son, Ted, and collect diapers for Catholic Charities Lake County Diaper Depot, this month!

Currently, we are welcoming:

wipes

diapers

training pants in all sizes

The Diaper Depot is in dire need of size 2 and size 6 diapers

We are accepting new packages, in addition to opened packages of unused diapers. Please seal the unused, open pack-ages of diapers in a Ziploc bag and label the bag with the diaper size. Each of our school buildings have collection re-

ceptacles located within, and are ready to receive your donations now, through Friday, February 8th!

Looking ahead, Lent will be fast approaching and we will be inviting our students to sacrifice food items from their

snack and/or lunch, throughout Lent, which will be donated to The Beacon Place. Barb Kracic, Director of The Beacon Place and Commissioner of The Hunger Project, will be coming to speak to our K-8 students on February 14th about

hunger in Lake County. Her presentation will kick-off this Lenten Apostolic Project.

In addition to sacrificing food from their snack and/or lunch, students will be “Lenten Secret Sacrificers”, offering pray-

ers and sacrifices for a randomly assigned classmate. Be on the lookout for more details on our exciting Lenten pro-jects, in the near future!

The Apostolic Committee is grateful for all of your support!

PRE-K CORNER Mrs. Campanella

The pre k staff understands as a parent it can be difficult to set limits for your children. Yet, limits are important to chil-dren for a variety of reasons. Limits help:

to keep children safe,

children learn to be self-regulating,

children know we care about them.

Teachers throughout East Lake Academy have clear expectations of our students.

Although rules may vary from classroom to classroom,

there are school rules which are consistently reinforced by

all teachers.

Whether it is remembering to walk in the hallways, or speaking respectfully to classmates, teachers work toward

helping each student grow as an image of Christ.

Daily routines help students know what to expect.

Sometime rules are broken. In that case, we allow for immediate feedback, and firm yet fair consequences.

When enforcing rules, we are sure to let the child know that it is the behavior we do not like, while affirming our

love for the child.

It is beneficial to your child’s development to set clear

boundaries at home. At some point, children are sure to test the boundaries.

In that case, it is important to maintain your composure,

and remember

they are always looking toward us as examples of Christ’s love.

SCIENCE PHUN DAY Miss Campanella

Stars were shining bright for Science Phun Day this month!

Since Christmas was around the corner, we discussed the spiritual theme of “light”. For example, Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Light, we are to be salt and light to the world, and the Star of Bethle-hem showed the Wise Men the way to the newborn king.

Then we applied the same theme of “light” to science. We talked about how Christmas lights are wired, including the difference between elec-

trical conductors versus insulators and the idea of a “complete circuit.” We used wire, a button battery, and an LED (light emitting diode) to create our own complete circuit and used pipe cleaners to

transform it into our very own Star of Bethlehem ornament!

AFTER CARE Miss Campanella

In After Care, we always have a lot

of fun making creations.

Whether it is building with Legos, constructing with waffle blocks, or

using scrap paper to cut and paste a masterpiece, the creativity of the students never ceases to amaze me!

In December, we bid farewell to our friend, Miss O’Truk.

During her last week helping at East Lake, she led a poinsettia craft activity that turned out beautiful! This was a fun opportunity for both the students

and for her, since she is studying to be an art teacher. This semester, she will

be student teaching as an Art teacher at Lake Forest High School.

She will be missed!

In our first week back from winter

break, we had a very exciting experiment to help us answer the question:

‘Does air weigh anything?’

Before starting, most students made the hypothesis that no, air does not weigh anything because you cannot really feel it. To test our hypothesis, we

suspended a giant balance, with an empty plastic cup on one side and two

empty balloons on the other side. The balance started off level, but when we blew up the balloons, the balance tilted in that direction proving that air weighs something! Students then took turns putting a bean into the plastic cup at the other end until the balance was level again.

It was simple science and great fun!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Julie Handrich

We continually stress that God loves a gracious winner and good sportsmanship. Likewise, we talk to the students that

friendship, perseverance and fun are more important than the outcome of a PE game. We have adopted the motto – “if you had fun, you won” to instill good sportsmanship and kindness toward others in our

gym class. PRE-K

The PreK-3 and PreK-4 students continue to enjoy their class time with Miss Campanella. A few of their favorite games

have been “Rocketship” and “Snowflake, Snowflake”. The “Rocketship” game combines a musical story with a variety of movement. During the activity, the students take

an imaginary trip to the moon. Once they arrive,

they explore the surface using a variety of loco-motor skills, such as jumping, running, spinning

and hopping. In “Snowflake, Snowflake” the stu-dents play follow the leader, while pretending to

be snowflakes moving through the gym.

KINDERGARTEN, GRADE 1 & 2

Christmas and winter themed games were played throughout the month of December. Our favorite activities proved to be “reindeer training” and “snowball throw”. In “reindeer training”, stu-

dents were challenged to deliver “toys” by navigating through a challeng-ing obstacle course. The rounds were timed, to see if we could improve

our score and beat the clock! The “snowball throw” game was a fun way

to improve our throwing and aiming skills. Students took aim at snow-men targets and were challenged at different distances in the gym.

GRADE 3 & 4

The 3rd and 4th grade students also enjoyed Christmas themed games along with an introduction to basketball. The stu-

dents practiced ball handling, dribbling, shooting and passing through a variety of stations. They also played one of their favorite games,

“speedway dribble”. In this game, players followed the basic rules of basketball (traveling, double dribble, etc.). If they violated a rule, they

got a ticket and did an exercise (push-ups, jumping jacks, sit-ups, etc.)

handed out by the basketball police. A new game, “The Grinch Stole Christmas” also became a fast favorite. In this fun tagging game the stu-

dents had to out-run the Grinch so they could save Christmas!

GRADE 5 – 8

One of East Lake’s favorite PE units, basketball, took center “court” for the month of December. The students started

the unit by reviewing basketball fundamentals and rules. We worked on passing and shoot-

ing drills, setting a screen and dribbling re-lays. The students also participated in a vari-

ety of activities such as free throw contests and 3 on 3 scrimmages. During the last two

weeks, the students enjoyed full court, 5 on 5

games.

Our next unit, floor hockey, should be just as fun and fast paced. The fifth grade and middle school students will review the rules of the game and proper hockey stick handling. Safety is our number one concern - no high sticking allowed!

This unit will culminate with a round robin style tournament. (Just in time for the NHL season opener!)

“If you had fun, you won”. Make it your motto!

God’s words always give us a broader perspective on life,

including winning, losing, competition and good sportsmanship.

Philippians 2:13 says, “Do nothing out of self ambition, but in humility which considers others.”

Our Mission The specific mission of East Lake Academy is summa-

rized in the motto, Integer Homo (Latin for "the whole

man"); that is, providing its students with an integral

formation. Our educational program consists of three

essential elements: teaching, educating, forming. To teach means to provide the student with the intellec-

tual capabilities, content and skills needed to respond

to the demands of today's society.

To educate means to train the student in the habit of

intellectual rigor, structured reasoning, and in the appre-

ciation of beauty; it means to cultivate sensitivity,

memory, imagination; and finally, to develop the art of

communication and the ability to express oneself clear-

ly and elegantly.

To form is to lead the student to become a person for

others, with an upright ethical code, sensitivity toward

the needs of others- especially the most disadvantaged

- and an openness to human and spiritual values. . In this way students are prepared not just for profes-

sional success, but also for their self-realization as per-

sons and authentic Christians in the various facets of

their personal and professional lives. .

Farewell

In the month of February, we bid farewell to two wonderful Pre-K fami-

lies. The Glaze and Phelps families are relocating. We were so

blessed to serve Elijah, Elyssa and Jaden. We wish them well, keep them in our prayers and hope they visit us if in the area so we can see

how they have grown.
