On a mission to reach Eastern Kentucky and our world for Jesus Christ
NEW BEGINNINGS
It is with mixed emotions that I have submitted my resignation as the District Superintendent of
the Eastern Kentucky District in order to assume the role of pastor at the Church of the
Nazarene in Galesburg, Illinois. My resignation will be effective December 7, 2014.
Our emotions are mixed because we have served in Eastern Kentucky for 16+ years, including
five as a pastor. It’s like home and all of you are like family. We deeply love our district, our
churches, and our people. Always have, and always will! What an honor and privilege to have
served with all of you. No regrets at all, and we’d do it all over again. It’s been a labor of love!
I was, however, also becoming increasingly aware that the Lord was releasing me from the
work here, and that perhaps the time was right for a new district leader with a fresh voice, fresh
vision, and fresh energy. The flipside, though, is that the Lord has also opened a door for me to
pursue one of my other passions again – pastoring. Though our emotions remain mixed, we’re
convinced that the time is right for both the district and Karen & me to make this change.
Our presiding General Superintendent, Dr. J.K. Warrick, met with our district advisory council
on October 22, 2014, to begin working on a superintendent succession plan. Between the Lord
and Dr. Warrick, you’ll be in good hands!
No words are adequate to express how much we have appreciated working with all of you.
Karen and I will always rejoice along with the district in every future victory, and we’ll weep
along with the district when she faces difficult challenges. You’ll always be near to our hearts!
Please also pray for Karen and me in our transition. We need to sell our home and Karen will
need to find employment. Thank you, and may God bless the Eastern Kentucky District beyond
measure!
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE PERSECUTED
CHURCH November 9
This day provides opportunity for Christians worldwide to focus on those suffering for their Christian faith. The Body of Christ can pray and take appropriate action to effect change.
An average of 159,960 Christians worldwide are martyred for their faith each year
200 million Christians live in societies where they daily face the threat of being imprisoned, tortured, and killed because of their identity as Christians
Every church on EKD pray for the Persecuted Church. WWW.IDOP.ORG

What beautiful colors God is using all around EKD this time of year! Did you remember to thank him? He has blessed us with more years to love and serve Him. As we do this, let me encourage you to be the best you can be…
Learn and Grow– Never, never, never stop learning! Take up a new hobby, teach a weekly Bible Study...the opportunities are endless. Remember and Reflect—Enjoy a trip down memory lane and put the information on paper or on a recording. Your family will enjoy it for years to come. Encourage and Compliment—There are countless opportunities to give a sincere compliment to make someone’s day brighter. Let’s counter Satan’s voice! Relish Humor and Enjoy a Laugh—It is healthy to laugh! It is the spice of life. God’s Word says it is good medicine. (and no negative side affects!) Be a Prayer Warrior—Pray your way through a list of people God has given you to love and those you meet each day in your world. Find Ways to Contribute to Society—Volunteer, work the polls, reach to a kindergarten class, take a bud vase to a shut-in…. Discipline Yourself to be Active and Involved—Remove words like ‘can’t’, ‘bored’, ‘too old’. ‘never did it that way before’ from your vocabulary! Get out there and visit the sick, walk, meet with friends, play games, visit family, make brownies and divide with your neighbors….
And remember to GIVE GOD THE GLORY!
Special Services
The fall and upcoming winter is a great time for outreaches to promote growth for your church. Be sure and get the word out in the paper, on the radio, facebook, and other social media outlets about special events at your church. Consider asking teenagers with lots of social media contacts to help you spread the word about your revival, homecoming, special Christmas programs, and other special events! One thing I have noticed is when we focus on the kids the church is filled. Do you have children’s programs planned? Pray about having special services for the kids where kids will get to be up front, or maybe even have a Kids Festival. You can have a Kids Fest recognizing all of the kids, share the gospel with a special service, have lunch and lots of simple fun for the kids like egg toss, three legged races, apple bobbing, dunking booth, etc….I would be happy to help you plan any of these outreaches, just give me a call or drop me an email!
Prayer Concerns for MVNU – Dr. Henry Spaulding, President, has invited the East Central Region to join hearts with those at the University who will be gathering for prayer at 8:00 AM, on the 15th of each month to pray for MNVU.
MVNU Among Best Colleges - Once again U.S. News & World Report named MVNU among "America's Best Colleges & Universities" for 2015. Six Nazarene universities placed in the Regional category. MVNU placed 67th in the Midwest (up from 77th last year). MVNU Receives Grant – MVNU was awarded a Title III Strengthening Institutions Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant, titled Improving Baccalaureate Success and Completion, will assist MVNU in designing and implementing its student success initiative, linking academic quality, vocational calling, and servant leadership. MVNU's Center for Student Success will integrate divergent student learning services, incorporating them into one central administrative structure and the location in the Thorne Library/Learning Resource Center will make for easy access. Pastor Interview
by Bette Edwards Introducing Pastor David Young who serves at our Corbin Church:
Tell us a little bit about your family: I have been married to Delilah for 39 yrs. She is a professional artist having sold several hundred original paintings that hang around the United States, from Hollywood directors’ homes to physicians’ offices. She is the consummate pastor’s wife. We have 3 sons, all of whom are actively serving the Lord, one on the mission field. We have 4 grandchildren.
Where is your favorite vacation spot? Hilton Head and the Savannah, GA area.
Tell us a grade school memory: I stuffed Billy Turner into a large garbage can. I do not remember what he did to me, but I am sure he must have deserved it!
Describe yourself in 7 words: Passionate in daily service to my Lord.
If you could be 16 again, what advice would you give yourself? Do not climb into the garage attic to retrieve a cat!
Your favorite meal always includes: Steamed snow crab legs and broiled lobster tail.
What book are you currently reading? Vic Reasoner, “The Importance of Inerrancy”
In your opinion, what is the dumbest thing you ever did? Wrecking and totaling 2 cars in a 6 month period after going 41 years with no accidents.
How did God give you the call to preach? I began seeing myself in a classroom of students while I was running my drill press at Ford Motor Co. I did not know what those visions meant until God began to speak to me through the Scripture on a daily basis. This began 30 days after I was sanctified. The Lord would wake me up in the night to pray and preaching always seemed to be a topic of those times of prayer. It still is!
Give one idea of how to reach more people across the EKD for Christ: Every congregation and pastor stay in prayer for the power of the Holy Spirit to fall without measure on our Sunday School and worship services. It shows when we do and it shows when we don’t.. People will respond and come to church when the power of the Holy Spirit abides in it and in the lives of the people.
News from Churches Flemingsburg – The church has called Rev. Lyle Hamilton to
be their pastor effective Nov. 2, 2014, and he will be installed
that same day. We also welcome Pastor’s wife, Dona, and
their daughter, Malena. The Hamiltons come to us from
Prescott Valley, AZ, but Pastor Lyle was a former youth
pastor at the Maysville Church. We welcome the Hamiltons
back to EKD!
Lloyd – The church has been approved to build a new multi-
purpose building, and they will be breaking ground on Oct.
25, 2014. We’re excited for Pastor Ken Martin, the church
family, and for how God is blessing the church!
Newport First – The church called Rev. Keith Raney to be
their pastor effective Sep. 28, 2014, and he was installed that
same day. Pastor Keith is from our district, and we welcome
him and his wife, Marie, to Newport First!
Waco – The church has called Rev. Daniel Miller to be their
pastor effective Nov. 2, 2014, and he will be installed on Nov.
9. We also welcome Pastor’s wife, Sonya, and their children,
Natalie & Daniel. The Millers come to us from Knoxville,
TN. We welcome them to EKD!
