Dear ResidentsWelcome to the august Edition of the East Grinstead Living.

Hopefully you’re all enjoying the holiday month and managing to find time to relax.

To get you in the August holiday spirit flip back the page and try our “spot the difference” competition in association with local author Garen Ewing. Then flip to our trivia/sudoku page and try your hand at our quick quiz... then read the rest... We’re very pleased to feature another local author, nick Weston as he explains what led him to write his book, Tree House Diaries: How to live wild in the woods and his love of ashdown Forest.

on our charity page safepoint, an international charity based nearby East Grinstead, explain the background to their lifesaving work across the world and why 5 mums are climbing mount Kilimanjaro.

Finally, thank you for supporting our local businesses and we welcome feedback to both the publication and services received through using any businesses we profile..

Have a wonderful holiday month and enjoy the, hopefully, lovely sunshine.

all the best,

the East Grinstead Living team

exercise, sports performance,

rehabilitation, spinal health

maintenance and prevention.

the body is designed to heal itself. at Family Chiropractic Sussex, a qualified and experienced chiropractor will perform a thorough physical exam to find the cause behind your problem. if necessary, on-site x-rays will be taken to further identify the problem so that a workable solution is worked out and the body corrected so that healing can take place.

Located in East Grinstead, Family Chiropractic sussex has been successfully treating patients of all ages from as far afield as Italy and France to Brighton and Birmingham. Locals are welcome, too!

If you have health problems, don’t suffer in silence. Seek the help of a professional. Call Dr Teresa White or Dr Matthew George at Family Chiropractic Sussex on (01342) 315298 today!

twenty years later and that tree still holds the same magic it did all those years ago. i was incredibly lucky to grow up on the forest, i had a playground the other side of the garden fence that in it’s own way has shaped the person i am today: from damming streams and building camps to stalking rabbits and climbing

trees, all of these activities subtly

encouraged by my parents, gave me

more pleasure than a tV ever could.

the Bible for a young lad growing

up on the forest was the sas survival

handbook, i still have mine: dog-

eared and stained with dirt, a tome

of absolute self-sufficiency, but how

often do we find ourselves in such

extreme situations? perhaps that

is what prompted my six-month

experiment living amongst the

leaves? A return to the forest after five

unfulfilling years of chasing the pound

in the urban sprawl of London was

more than just a new lease of life.

to create an existence with your

bare hands is a wonderful thing

indeed and that was exactly what i

set out to achieve. We have become

so far removed from our connection

with the land, the subtle changes of

the seasons and rarely appreciate the

incredible landscape around us. By

….to the treesThere is a tree, not too far from goat’s cross roads, a grand old Scots pine with it’s lowest branch just within the grasp of a 8 year old. I used to climb to the top of the pine and simply gaze out upon the rolling hills of Sussex until they climaxed with the rise of the South Downs. To a small boy it seemed like the end of the earth, but I knew then, just as I do now that out there was adventure, adventure so close, I could touch it, smell it and see it everyday.

building a tree house

from recycled and

natural materials,

planting a vegetable

patch and adapting

to the simple life of a

hunter-gatherer, i was

able see how many

things we can do

without, but above

all, just how much we

take for granted. so

the next time, you step

out onto the ashdown

forest, remember

how lucky you are to

have such a place

on your doorstep,

the adventure that

it can offer and of

course…all those trees

to climb!

so what drives

someone to give up

conventional adult

life and go back to

basics? i suppose

it was, in a sense,

a wish to return to

those carefree days

of my youth in which

anything seemed

possible and the tree

house was the

manifestation of

such dreams. at

a time when the

recession was

in full swing, the

only pressing

question i had to ask

myself was…why not?

What began as an

experiment to see if it

was a lifestyle i could

adhere to in the future

soon became one in

which i was thriving

and thoroughly

enjoying.

i feel truly honored

to have had a book

published about my

experience and the

chance to share it

with anyone who is

looking for something

they feel they may

have lost. The Tree House Diaries: How to live wild in the woods (Publisher: Collins & Brown) is more than

just a manual on the

trials and tribulations

of stumbling self-

sufficiency, it is a story

of what can happen

AtlasPROfilax

NEW AMAZING, SELF-EMPOWERING REALIGNMENTDid you know that the atlas bone is misaligned in most people? What if you could GET RID OF BACK PAIN, NECK PAIN, ETC…?

Situated at the base of the skull, a misaligned Atlas bone can disrupt the normal flow of information between the brain and the body causing numerous painful and medical conditions.

Such conditions as: recurring back pain, whiplash, migraines and headaches, joint pain in the hips and/or knees, rotation of the hips, repetitive strain injury, jammed spinal nerves, stiff neck, trapped nerves & difference in leg length.

USING A PROvEN TREATMENT FROM SWITZERLAND A strategic and non-chiropractic massage is applied to the short musculature of the neck. In only one application, safely and permanently,

the Atlas bone returns to its correct position.

For more details and booking, contact: Marie-Agnès Casalini, Certified AtlasPROfilax practitioner

Tel: (01342) 303279 Mob: 07828 954 304Email: [email protected] Website: www.marieatlas.co.uk

CLINIC IN EAST GRINSTEAD

Marie-Agnès Casalini

How does a misaligned Atlas affect the body?the atlas carries not only the skull, but

also facilitates sUspEnsion, BaLanCE, and ControL of the human spine and skeletal system.

Extensive research demonstrates the importance of the upper neck concerning our health and emotional balance. the atlas is, in many cases, out of place, rotated forward and left, thus causing a variety of problems.

the spine can be compared to a chain. When the first link is twisted each link down to the last turns thereby disrupting the rest of the chain.

the whole back bone tries to compensate for such imbalance causing significant adverse changes to the posture. the results are symptoms such as recurring headaches/migraines, neck pain, stiff

neck, back pain, lumbago, herniated disc(s), scoliosis, jammed spinal nerves, scoliotic pelvis, hip joint pain, maladies of the knee, difference in leg length, meniscus, and a variety of other symptoms.

also when the atlas is misaligned and the spinal column unbalanced, the central nervous system is not able to function at its best.

Why does a self-healing and regeneration process start after the relocation of the atlas?

When the atlas is in its correct position, the brain can function undisturbed. this promotes a feeling of harmony, setting self-healing and regenerative processes on course through-out the body.

Marc Koska OBE has worked tirelessly over the last 25 years on Global Healthcare with a particular focus on Injection Safety. After spending years researching the syringe industry Marc invented an AD (Auto Disable) syringe – the K1, that physically prevents re-use.

To-date Marc and the K1 have been credited with saving well over 9 Million lives, but product alone will never stop this silent epidemic, which is why Marc set up The SafePoint Trust in 2006.

Marc and SafePoint have two approaches: first they work hard to ensure that the public are educated at grass root level, through short public information films and secondly they lobby extensively for legislation change at ministerial level.

SHocking FacTS & FiguRES:

Each and every year due to unsafe injections there are:

23,000 HIV Infections

1,000,000 Hepatitis C Infections

21,000,000 Hepatitis B Infections

RESULTING IN 1,300,000 DEATHS EACH YEAR

(WHO, World Health Organisation,

figures)

Malaria kills 1,000,000, so this silent epidemic kills more people each year (according to the WHO)

Gardening Tips for AUGUSTarticle by michael dongray, imberhorne Lane nursery proprietor

annuals, Bulbs and Herbaceous Remove fading and dead flowers on your annuals and herbaceous perennial plants. Removing the finished flowers will promote a longer flowering season. Perennial and biennial plants can be started from seed sown directly into the garden. Continue to plant container grown perennials. always take time to properly prepare the soil by mixing generous quantities of soil improver compost or well composted manure with your existing soil. Spring flowering perennials can be divided and transplanted. Be sure to do this during the coolest part of the day and water the plants thoroughly after transplanting.

ShrubsSummer flowering shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. Remove any dead or diseased branches.

Vegetables and Fruitnow is the time to start your autumn and winter vegetables. sow seeds of onions, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and winter cauliflower directly into the garden early in the month.

LawnsGrasses go dormant in times of drought, but will quickly return to life with the autumn rains so a brown lawn is not necessarily a dead lawn !! if a lush green lawn is important to you, and you don’t mind mowing, water it regularly, and deeply. if a water shortage is expected, or you hate tending to grass, you may choose to just let your lawn go dormant, and water it as seldom as once a month. raise the cutting height of the mower. taller grass cools the roots and helps to keep the moisture in the soil longer. Keep an eye out for slug and snail damage and treat accordingly.

RosesBush roses can be pruned in late august to promote the most autumn blooms. remove about a third of the vigorous growth. any stems that cross each other should be removed, as well as those that are in the centre of the plant. Weak, spindly growth and any damaged by black spot or rust should also be removed. Continue feeding roses with a general rose fertilizer. spray against pest and disease preferably with an organic product.

the June meeting of the East

Grinstead natural History

society was an exiting one.

Keepers from the British

Wildlife Centre visited our

evening meeting bringing

along lots of their charges.

From tiny little Harvest mice to

a chunky young Badger we

had close views of them all.

there was a cute Hedgehog

that ran round the floor and

a young tawny owl who did

other things on the floor as

did the magnificent big Eagle

owl. possibly the favourite

was the young red squirrel

that ran all over his keeper.

We always have live

creatures at our June

meeting, a treat for members

before the summer break.

the society was founded in

2 by dedicated naturalists

including the famous

horticulturalist Will ingwerson

who had new species alpines

named after him. since then

we’ve been a very busy

locally, from serious activities

such as playing a major part

in saving badger setts from

being built on, to joining

the carnival procession for

the Queen’s Jubilee with

members wearing animal

masks. these days the society

is made up of ordinary

people who share a common

interest in nature and enjoy

getting together on the third

monday of the month to

watch a slide show on wildlife.

We also have bird watches at

Weirwood reservoir, walks to

look for flowers in the summer

and, for the really keen, a

dawn chorus meeting on the

first Sunday in May. We are a

friendly group and welcome

new members of all ages.

Julie lost almost 6 stone in 7 months.

The programme was very easy to do. I didn’t feel hungry or have cravings. I am far healthier, a lot happier and my confidence has increased. I went from a size 18-20 to size 8-10. I can now buy any clothes that I like!
