A VERY
SPECIA L PLA CE
We have been attending the Dame Vera Lynn Trust School for Parents forjust under a year. My daughter Holly is two and a half years old and has
global developmental delay, she doesnt walk or talk. The school givesHolly and I an opportunity to spend precious time together in a supportiveinteractive learning environment.
It has taught m e w ays in w hich to integrate physio and speech therapy into our
daily lives. The school has brilliant equipm ent w hich has helped H olly get uponto her feet. W hen w e started at the school H olly w as craw ling and she has
now just started taking her first few steps. Since attending the school I have
also m et other fam ilies in sim ilar situations to us, and have been able to share
difficulties and get advice and support.
Since attending the school H ollys confidence has grow n. She used to be very
quiet and reserved (and som etim es still is), but the school has helped her
im prove her social skills and she has becom e m ore confident w ith both adults
and other children. H olly has started to use m akaton signing since attending
the school and is starting to have a lim ited understanding of som e basic signs.
The school teachers are all confident w ith signing and w e learn new signs each
w eek w hich helps both m yself and H olly. The environm ent at the school is fun
and m akes w hat m ight have been a tedious physio session into w hat seem s
m ore like play; using toys and singing w hich H olly loves. H ollys m obility iscom ing on so w ell. At the school w e sing songs for encouragem ent w hich w hen
repeated at hom e get her shrieking w ith excitem ent.
The staff at the school have been am azing, they provide us support and
advice and really care, they help m e stay focused on w hat is im portant and
how to achieve H ollys goals.
W ithout the school Im sure H olly w ouldnt have m ade the progress
she has.
Becky
We have had some special moments at the school and only recently for thefirst time Holly was able to get off the stool on her own, which is somethingwe have been practicing since last year a giant milestone for us!!!!!
Holly has also learnt to point at things she wants, this was also achievedwith the help of the schools activites; such as making marks during verymessy play. Holly can also now take a couple of steps. These are all
things we didnt know if she would ever do.
